The Orange County Register is looking for one or more senior-level copy editors with commitment to excellent, lively, high-quality journalism.
Responsibilities include shaping stories for publication to Register standards by:
â¢ reading the story and correcting any mistakes including spelling, grammar, style and common facts
â¢ writing headlines, captions and refers
â¢ checking graphics
â¢ trimming the story to fit
â¢ raising any issues of inaccuracy, omission, bias or libel
â¢ contacting the reporter or editor for clarification
â¢ adhering to deadlines
Must be knowledgeable in Associated Press style. Experience with CCI, layout or wire editing is a plus. Night and weekend work is required.
Ideal candidates will have the ability and judgment to slot stories, publish late-breaking wire news and send pages with no one backing them up. A typical night might include juggling a photo editor subbing out a photo, a designer adding a fact box, a reporter calling back with the answer to a question â" all while the clock ticks down. The job requires the judgment to determine the importance of breaking wire news and the poise to typeset pages to meet deadline.
This is a collaborative department so a senior copy editor needs to be able to work well with other members of the copy desk as well as designers, photo editors, line editors and other members of the newsroom to meet shared goals. The job requires comfort with editing stories in various technological platforms and the ability to work on various sections of the newspaper â" from Cars one day to News the next. Topics may include news, business, features and online breaking news. Youâll be an expert on the difference between Corona del Mar and Avenida Del Mar, FasTrak and Fastpass, and the Orange Crush and the Orange Circle.
Candidates should have a bachelorâs degree and at least five years of copy editing experience. Knowledge of Orange County is a plus.
