The Evansville Courier Co., publishers of the Evansville Courier & Press and The (Henderson) Gleaner, is seeking an experienced News Editor to join its multimedia news production team. We are looking for a newsroom leader who believes the best days of local media are ahead. That's the spirit we bring to work with us each day and that we share with our community through two daily newspapers, the region's leading web site, two magazines and programming on local television and radio.
Our ideal candidate brings previous management experience, a background in copy editing and design and a passion for getting it right. Five years of daily newspaper/online experience is preferred as well as experience with the Adobe Creative Suite of design applications. Saxotech experience is a plus. The News Editor supervises a team of copy editors and designers who produce daily newspaper pages and handle non-breaking news web posting in a deadline-driven environment. The News Editor, in consultation with the Editor, is in charge of the night side news operation and works closely with a team of editors who lead local news, features and sports. The production of news pages includes design, presentation, picture selection, copy editing, and the writing of captions and headlines. Web posting includes presentation, picture selection, copy editing and the writing of captions and headlines.
The News Editor reports to the Editor.
Job-specific responsibilities include:
â¢ Ensuring all product deadlines and quality standards are met.
â¢ Presenting the news clearly and producing pages with an eye to limiting errors and inaccuracies, good headline writing, play of stories, photo/graphic presentation, and consistent deadline performance.
â¢ Responding to concerns or suggestions from the Editor and department heads about story play, presentation, headlines, etc.
â¢ Developing a personal knowledge of the communities served by the copy/design desk and encouraging shared knowledge among staff.
â¢ Ensuring adherence to established copy and design stylebooks and guidelines.
â¢ Retrieving copy from news wires and other sources and preparing it for publication.
â¢ Posting stories online.
â¢ Working with daily budgets to communicate plans to the Editor and department heads.
â¢ Working with editors on special projects and advance sections.
â¢ Scheduling staff work shifts and vacations; approving time cards.
â¢ Evaluating staff performance and providing timely, specific feedback.
â¢ Other duties as assigned.

â¢ Promoting inter-newspaper teamwork, communication and participation in daily and special projects.
â¢ Must have the ability to improve and develop own skills through feedback, personal development and shared best practices.
â¢ Must demonstrate organizational efficiency and effectiveness necessary to contribute to a fast-paced production environment serving multiple customers
â¢ Must possess solid news judgment.
â¢ Must possess a clear sense of mission, a design/presentation philosophy and outstanding editing and writing skills to ensure the integrity of all news products that come through the desk.
â¢ Must demonstrate a thorough understanding and operational fluency of line editing; copy editing, headline writing, picture editing, and publication design (from font management to color theory).
â¢ Must demonstrate a thorough understanding and operational fluency of contemporary newspaper technology (Saxotech experience preferred) and front-end system interaction with wire services, syndicated feeds, online CMS system, etc.
â¢ Must show understanding of libel laws as well as state and federal laws regarding open meetings, open records and access to information.
â¢ Must possess an entrepreneurial spirit and be an innovative thinker.
â¢ Must possess strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills necessary to navigate multiple customers and supervisors at multiple locations, both within and outside the newsrooms.
â¢ Must exhibit high standards of accuracy and fairness.
â¢ Requires a BS/BA in news/media/journalism discipline or equivalent experience.
â¢ A minimum of five years daily newspaper editorial experience preferred.
â¢ A moderate level of mobility is required in expediting work flow processes and procedures.
â¢ Must be physically able to sit at a work station and maintain productivity for upwards of eight (8) hours on occasion.
â¢ A relatively high degree of mental acuity and social skills are necessary to successfully interact with coworkers, newsroom supervisors and the general public, often under time-sensitive conditions.
