Right before I got to 3/68 AR in June 83 I had heard of someone stealing a tank and heading toward downtown Mannheim. Also heard the tank fell off one of the bridges and the guy died. I ran across a pic on the internet of the tank getting pulled out of the water.

I was in 4/69 Armor from 82 -85 at Lee Barracks. Story was just before I got there a fellow "fell" out one of the 3rd story windows and broke his neck but survived. Another was that some yahoo hung a Nazi flag out his window that almost caused a riot in Gonsenheim. The thing I remember most was when the Beruit Marines were sent to Weisbaden. Lee went on high alert with tanks in the street so you had to zig-zag onto the base. We inspected all the cars with mirrors underneath. I was in the front gate guard shack when we got a call thay someone was going to mortar the base. Then there was rumor that a semi of explosives was found nearby. The guess was the driver decided living was better than meeting up with his 40 virgins. On the upside was the greek pizza place outside the base run by two brothers. Good stuff. Subject: Re: [8thdivmodern] Re: Lee BarracksI think the Buffalo soldier story was a compilation of stories from all over the Army during the 70's, like I said earlier things were going downhill when I left 3/68th in 71. There were the heads and juicers, but having said that most guys were just doing there time and trying to stay out of trouble. They would smoke a little hash and drink some wine/beer/etc. In the field or when handling weapons I don't remember anybody getting high or drunk, maybe after a day on the range.Good to hear from you Matt.Looks like activity is picking back up on the Yahoo site, I actually like it better than FB, just seems easier to navigate.Jim Turner 3/68 Armor 69-71From: Matthew Ginn <matthewginn@...>

I never believed that Buffalo Soldier novel, but as time goes by and I hear more stories from you fellows, I'm beginning to think I might've been wrong. Not in the late 80s, but maybe the late 70s.On Tue, Mar 5, 2013 at 8:12 AM, David E. Rudd <ai4ji@...> wrote:I was in the 2/87, E co. in 1983. Prior to that, I was in the 1/13th in Baumholder. It's been so long ago. I don't remember whether the stolen tank was from 5/68 or 3/68.
Guess it was a great idea to keep the firing pins in the Arms Room, eh? Can you imagine that idiot running through Mannheim with a combat load of ammo AND the firing pin in place? That could have gotten REAL ugly.
