I went to Zoe from 1957-1967 and it warms my heart
to see that people are still so very interested in Zoe.  If
anyone was there during my time let me know.  I recently
found out that a lost friend and former counselor of mine
from Wardell, Mo. - Zitella Sue Peterson Solomon passed
away November 1999.  We had one time talked about
buying Zoe and turning it back into a riding camp.  She ended
up moving to FLA and I have lived numerous places around
the USA, currently in Ohio.  Her daughter and husband have
opened a riding camp in Vermont --- and set up a legacy for
donations for the camp in her Mom;s name because she loved Zoe and
horses so much.

I worked at Camp Zoe the summers of 1967, 1968 and 1969. The McMahons owned the camp in the summer of 1967. They sold the Camp to John and Maudeline Baltz of West Plains and Harold and Laura Smith of Mountain View sometime before the summer of 1968. The McMahons ran the Camp jointly with the Baltz/Smith group the summer of 1968, and the Baltz/Smith group ran it themselves in the summer of 1969. I believe it was between the summers of 1969 and 1970 that the Baltz’s bought out the Smiths.

At the time, David Baltz was a high school counselor in the Willow Springs school district, and his wife was a kindergarten teacher. Harold Smith was principal of Mountain View High School, and Laura was an English teacher.

I noticed this in the Howell County News, concerning the passing of
David Baltz, who co-owned Camp Zoe in the late 60's.

Just David Baltz

Just David Baltz was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Ink, Mo., the son of Dr.
Thomas Albert and Sarah Paralee (Deatherage) Baltz. He departed this
life on May 2, 2009, at his home in Pomona, Mo., at the age of 87 years.
J.D. was united in marriage to Mamie Maudeline Pummill on Dec. 21, 1943,
in University City, Mo., and to this union, two children were born. He
received a bachelor of science degree from Southwest Missouri State
University and then continued his education at University of Missouri,
earning his master of science degree. He served his country in the U.S.
Army during World War II in the Southern Philippines, earning the rank
of sergeant. J.D. was employed by many area schools as teacher,
principal and counselor. He was ranked as #3 child psychiatrist in the
state of Missouri. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 607 in Eminence,
Mo., and held his pilot license. He was baptized at Delaware Baptist
Church, Delaware, Mo., and was a member of Abundant Life Bible Church in
West Plains. He was a former owner of Camp Zoe Youth Summer Camp in
Round Spring, Mo. He enjoyed model trains and raising exotic fish. He
was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maudeline; brothers Merle,
Thoris, Varus, Burton, Merton and Eugene; and sisters Geraldine Decker,

Hey Zoetians!  Looks like Mary Otto has come through with planning a Zoe float!!  See below!!

Unfortunately I will be floating the Big Piney that weekend with another group that has been going for 25 years the weekend after Father's Day.  I skipped it last year to do the Zoe float, so I promised I would be there 2009.  If it conflicts next year I will be at Zoe 2010!  I will miss seeing you all and know that you will have a great time!!

Contact Mary for more details - info below!!
Peace,

Kimmie,
You have the power to forward to the Zoeite group.  Please make it so.

Hello all you happy campers.   This is Mary Otto.  Trying to scronge up interest in a float trip on our beloved Current River.  June 26, 27, 28; Fri, Sat, Sun.
I am curious about the interest in a canoe overnight or camping at Round Springs.  The campground at Round Spring is currently available for camping in several connected sights on the evening of 26 and 27.  $17 per night per site - rustic.  We could get canoes from Pulltite to Round Spring.
Or we could float from Akers to Round Spring and over night along river bank.
Please RSVP to me at mary-otto@... or call 314-842-2442.
Please let me know if you are interested and in which plan you favor.
Thanks,
Mary

I went to Zoe for 10 years, my Mom was a camp nurse there and I never
realized what year Zoe started.  Hopefully Mac, Marg and Sam realized
what a blessing their Camp was to so many people.

Does anyone remember this song?

In the shade I lie and ponder
as the sun's rays beat out yonder
my one wish is that I
may wander the world 'til I die.

I shall seek valleys enchanted
I shall find lakes that are haunted
heat, cold, wind, drought or rain
a wanderer I shall remain.

I have found my place enchanted
it is what I've always wanted
and though my paths may stray
I'll er return to Zoe one day.

When life is hectic and crazy and
moving too quickly as it seems to
be doing lately I find myself singing
this song while sitting in traffic...

######################################
Time it was, and what a time it was, it was

A time of innocence, a time of confidences

Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph

Preserve your memories; they're all that's left you
(Simon & Garfunkle)

I just found Camp Zoe on Facebook and the now (defunct?) website. Can
anyone give me the date of the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper
article? I don't live in Missouri anymore so I missed it.

I went to Camp Zoe from 1956-1966 as did my sister. Our maiden name
was Olson. My mom was the camp nurse there. Am looking forward to
telling them I found the alumni on Facebook and Yahoo.

I was just kidding, no offense at all. You are right; the camp is still there, even if it has been taken over by a commune of hippies. And of course, it will always be there in our hearts.

Thanks, Fowler. It was a great site, but I know all good things must come to an end. Much like Camp Zoe itself...

I'm shutting down the Camp Zoe Memories website
(http://www.campzoem emories.org) after 10 years online. Free social

Facebook really is painless and you can use it however you want.  You don’t even have to post a photo.  We are using it to find and inform people about our class reunion…….I won’t say which class reunion.
