For "publish-on-demand", where they print only when someone orders
your book, you could check our www.lulu.com or www.cafepress.com

If you have the cash upfront and know roughly how many copies you will
need, you could check your local phone book and find local printers
that will print paperbacks.

BTW, I remember you had to move your bookstore awile back. How's that
new location working out for you?

Hi everybody - I've only gotten 2 or 3 contributions, so I thought I'd
post this again. Please send your longer pieces or quotes about "wjat
is beauty" by Nov. 1 to honey_b_temple@..., or p.o. box 5383,
Richmond, CA 94805

Here's my original posting:
Hi zinesters - About 4 or 5 years ago, I put out a zine called "Beauty
is a Battlefield", which combined quotes about what beauty means to
people, as well as my stories of struggling mightily with body image
and beauty stereotypes.

The zine was incredibly popular, and continues to sell. I've had
people at zinefests come up to me and thank me for publishing it. I
just ran out of my third or fourth print run, and I think it's time to
revise it.

I'm putting out a call to all writers for either:

A) Quotes answering the question "What is Beauty?" Quotes should be
less than 3 sentences.

or

B) short pieces (less than 1000 words) about your own struggles with
finding yourself beautiful.

I'd like these pieces to be realistic and compelling, but also to end
on a positive note. I want the zine to be inspiring and hopeful, so
although I think there's definitely room in the world for rants about
fascist beauty standards, those belong in another zine. Please send
pieces about your own body image, and how you came to, at least some
of the time, find yourself beautiful.

Your piece could be about a particular part of yourself you think is
lovely, it could be about you overcoming or working on overcoming your
negative body image, it could be about why you don't want to look like
a supermodel, or anything that comes to mind, as long as it might help
someone with her own struggle with body image.

Depending on how many pieces I get, I may have to pick and choose
which ones I include. My goal is to include them all.

Contributors will each get 3 copies of the finished zine.

Please include the following with your contribution:

Your name or penname (whichever you want to be published with your
piece)
Your mailing address for the zines
If you're sending a longer piece (not a quote), please title the piece

Please don't send poetry. I'm looking for prose for this particular
zine.

Please send work to me via e-mail at honey_b_temple@... and put
"Beauty is a Battlefield" in the subject line.

The deadline is Nov. 1, 2005.

Thank you - I can't wait to see your contributions!

SNAP! kicked ass! It was the best comic convention I ever did. I made
over $35 selling my comics -- an unprecedented success! Also, the con
further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since
there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet
substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my
comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really
seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the
comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful
for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press
comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention
whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass,
and there's still a population of 6 billion!

If I had my way, I would talk and talk and talk and talk and never shut

decided to slap together a personal blog of my own:

"Hey! Can't you still get in trouble with your blog?" Yup, I still
could get in trouble with my blog. But at least there, folks won't be
able to tell me to shut up to my face. Or at least that's the theory.

I have a ton of zines I'd like to pass on. If you want a bunch (5-10), please
send me some loose stamps (at least $1) and your address and I'll send back
as many zines as will be covered by the postage. I have a lot of used
envelopes I can use, or you can send me a large SASE with loose or fixed
stamps. Either way, please take these zines off my hands!

E-mail me before you send your stamps/SASE, to make sure I anticipate still
having some zines available.

If you tell me what sort of zines you're interested in, I'll do my best to send
you
ones I think you'll like.

Subject: Happy 6th Anniversary, SPA!
aipman1

Hello out there in comicdom! It's been a long while since I went out
and about to other groups and forums to let people know what's going
on in the SPA. It's been a rough year for us, but we're pulling
through. I had an operation on my foot which had it up in the air
for months, and we've been doing a ton of website redesign work in
this downtime period as well. But the SPA is back on the Upswing,
with so much new stuff, I'm not even going to try to list it all.
Doesn't matter, not why I'm here.
	 It's now the SPA's 6th anniversary – and we'd like to renew
the call out we made 6 years ago. If you are a writer, artist,
publisher, musician, filmmaker or animator, or a fan of the indy
scene, then we're looking for help in building MORE new tools for
use in making the indy scene everything it can be. In our 6 years of
going at it, we have built a printing service, an online
distribution system (complete with print catalog for retailers), an
annual contest (Small Press Idol), and more. But there are numerous
things that the SPA would like to be working on that we simply need
more hands actively pursuing with us. Things like our How To
section, sorely in need of articles, Things like our Hall Of Fame
idea, which, well, we don't even know WHAT we need to get THAT where
we'd like to see it, but hey, we think big. Things like our Teaching
Materials program, sorely in need of people in charge of it to bring
a concerted effort.
There are, out there, a thousand different efforts being
made to make a better comicdom in this internet age. Why is the SPA
different? Simple dedication. No amount of nay saying or negativity
can convince an SPA member that we can't change the world, if we
work collectively, and WITH other websites, to make things better.
So we hope that this post will at least spark some talk wherever you
may have found it posted. I will be doing my best to follow up on it.
If you're interested in just a sample of what we're talking
about in the SPA right now, check this out:

Okay kids, I've been on a serious writing/art/collage kick and I
have FIVE new zines for your perusal.

     Diamond in the Rough #1:
A Perzine by me (Caroline Tigeress) that begins in Mexico a day
before I'm about to undergo my Gastric Bypass surgery. My observations
reguarding medicine and the hospitality of the country, as well as lots
of humourous tidbits about my hospital stay. Text-heavy and graphics
light, this zine might be triggering to those with compulsive eating
disorders. Digest Sized, $2.00

     Diamond in the Rough #2:
The continuation of my perzine, I'm still in Mexico in this
stage, and have changed format to an all hand-written, illustraited
format. I tell my struggle and obsession with food and how I got to be
the size that I was from a single perspective. I get to visit a Mexican
Mall and am introduced to the, well, frailties of Mexican plumbing
(complete with flies and water you shouldn't drink). A must read!
Digest Sized, $2.00

Tails of the Altered Earth (3rd Edition) #1:
An all new lit/furzine, Tails of the Altered Earth is an
Illustraited story complete in one issue. In the future,
anthropormorphic animals rule the earth, and many different factions
exist. Join Jason, a young Bear Cub and his Mentor, Royal as they
travel from Jason's home, away from his family for him to join the The
Guardians, a monastic group of furs dedicated to serving the Earth
Mother. A great zine for any furry/lit fan. Digest sized, $2.00

     Mutant Life #0:Preview:
A Sci-Fi litzine, this issue is the introduction to the major
characters and their perspectives. In the year 2054, Mutants are used
by the military for the, 'public good' and are trained to become
heroes. Join young Charlie McComber as he is 'drafted' at the tender
age of fourteen. In exchange for his father's life, he will be taught
to be a hero that the public will come to adore. Digest sized, $2.00

     Soixante Neuf #1:
Erotic Litzine, Soixante Neuf has a little something for
everyone, from straight vanilla sex to steamy lesbain bondage and
branding. I've included a handful of my favourite stories as well as
original cover artwork. Hot, hot hot - for adults only! Digest sized,
$2.00

As always, I'm looking for a few good distros to carry my work - if
you're a distro and any of the titles above sound intersting to you,
just drop me a line to caroline@... and I'll be happy
to send you out some samples.

All zines are $2.00 each, and may be ordered individually from:

     Caroline Tigeress
     POB 2267
     Longview, Washington 98632

I do *some* trades, so if you want to email me we can discuss it :)
Thanks!

Basically you join their chat-room on their site it gives you a link to those
people online in the chat-room, their location, their picture, etc and at one

Certain people like to tell me that it's impossible for me to have
total creative freedom and make profit at the same time. Well, certain
recent events have convinced me that they are wrong (or at least
mostly inaccurate). I just slapped together a web comic that will
provide me with a much bigger audience than ever, and potentially lead
me to profitable cartooning ventures. Here's the web comic in question:
http://www.nailbytes1.com/rw02010.htm

I also can't help but to ask why are there so many creative people who
oppose creativity? But since that question is off topic here, so I
won't go into it any further. But I will say that at least my
population of 6 billion theory is accurate. (And please don't give me
that "There are billions of people in poverty and the last thing on
their minds is looking at web comics. Plus, most of the world's
population doesn't have Internet access." stuff. I've known that for
years, and I probably knew it before you did!)

Anyway, doing web comics for popular web sites kicks ass!

It was a turbulent time of great social upheaval.

In this autobiographical short story collection, Evan Ginzburg looks back at
growing up in the racially changing East Flatbush, Brooklyn of the 1960s and
1970s. From the beautiful friendships he made to the dangers and humiliations he
faced, these gritty street tales will keep readers enthralled. With stories
ranging from nostalgic to heart-rendering, he pulls no punches as he looks back
at a Brooklyn that is now lost forever.
“We read several tales on the air and they’re funny, poignant and most
certainly memorable,” stated New York DJ Fred Geobold, of 50,000 watt WBAI-FM’s
Light Show in New York City.
Cultural icons such as Bruce Lee, Pam Grier, James Brown, Fred Williamson,
Marvin Gaye, pro wrestling champion Bruno Sammartino and many other heroes of
the era add magical memories that will transport readers back to this bygone

VALENTINE'S DAY WOMEN & SEXUALITY EVENT
Coming Up Short: Women & Sexuality
Sunday, February 12, 2006 6:30 PM
Pioneer Theater (155 East 3rd Street New York, NY 10009)

Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography (Becky Goldberg)
Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography takes a rare and empowering look into the
pornography industry and feminist community to see how they intertwine within
the politics and poetics of female sexuality. It shows women who are committed
to making and supporting pornography that includes their feminist values and
will go up against an entire industry, stereotypes, and sexism to get what they
want. Who better to claim the adult industry for themselves than the women it
depends on?

In Her Image: Producing Womanhood in America (Julia Barry)
We are constantly bombarded with images and messages representing and
shaping the lives of women. What are their roots and meanings? How do they
effect society's view of women? How do they influence women's lives? In Her
Image poses these questions to American audiences through a multi-media format
consisting of images accompanied by original songs. These images span a typical
woman's lifespan and reveal the ways in which various marketplaces are
interwoven to create a set of expectations and social requirements that tell
women who to be and how to act, think, and feel.

Filmmakers will be available for Q&A after the films.

Tickets are $9 ($6.50 students/seniors) and can be purchased at
http://www.altarmagazine.com. Goody bags filled with items from our sponsors
will be distributed to all who attend.

BOOK SUBMISSIONS
Doing it in Strange Places... And Making Change:
Young Women Fighting for Social Justice

A commonly asked question at social justice events is, "What can I do to
get more involved?" This question is usually answered, according to third wave
feminist writers Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, in one of three ways:
send money, call politicians, and volunteer. Unfortunately, none of these foster
a sense of investment in an issue or offer solutions for how to solve the
injustices in the world. It also doesn't account for the lack of time, money and
resources that these three answers require. What if we could just incorporate
our politics into our every day lives? In fact, that is just what most activists
do.
In this anthology, we want to hear from young women from all walks of
life who have found creative ways to use their passion (from writing to banking
to being a homemaker) as an outlet for social justice activism. We seek to make
activism accessible and inspire others to use the resources that they have to
contribute to
social justice. Changing the world won't happen over night, so let's share our
daily successes and strategies for making all of our visions of a better world
possible. Tell us what worked and what didn't because all experiences are
valuable. We want to be sure multiple voices and perspectives are represented in
the anthology. Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to submit work.
All work must be original and should not be published elsewhere.

Editor:
Mandy Van Deven is the editor and publisher of Altar Magazine
(www.AltarMagazine.com), a social justice publication focusing on art, music,
culture, politics, and activism. She also works as the Director of Community
Organizing at Girls for Gender Equity (www.gges.info), a grassroots organization
in Brooklyn, NY working to create opportunities for girls and women to live
self-determined lives. Mandy believes that all opinions are valuable and because
her voice is loud, she works to help others raise their own voices.

Submission Guidelines
* We prefer to have submissions sent via email in a Word or Rich Text
Format document to mandy_vandeven(AT)yahoo.com with "Doing it in Strange Places"

I've gotten some great feedback on my latest zine,
Honeypot #5: Force of Nature. Here's some of it:

"Beautiful and beautifully written, as always." - Joe
Pachinko, writer, publisher (Superstition Street
Press)

"I think you are one of the best of the personal
zinesters, as your honesty is so pure and unsettling."
- Christopher Robin, poet, editor of Zen Baby Zine

"Your writing, no doubt, will go on to nourish many
souls, who, just like me, hunger for the comfort of a
story that speaks a common language." - Wendy-O Matik,
poet, author of "Redefining our Relationships",
speaker, publisher (Defiant Times Press).

Honeypot #5 includes personal essays on the arrival of
my new baby niece, my issues with anger, my favorite
temper tantrums, struggling to communicate and
connect, going through yet another major life shift,
why things like bellies, depression, jealousy, and
rage can actually be good, the frustrations of trying
to live a good life, musings on my new hometown of
Richmond, CA, the most violent city in the SF bay
area, and "What's your Crazy?", about how there's no
such thing as sanity and what that means in
relationships. Scattered throughout are collages and
other various snippets.

The zine is 1/4 sized, around 65 pages, with a full
color cover.

Price is $2 plus two first class stamps or equal $$
for each zine ordered.

Please send orders to Honey B Temple, P.O. Box 5383,
Richmond, CA 94805

Thanks!

I know some friends already who have met a few nice honeys off of this kind of
stuff (here is the place they use: http://www.simpledatingplace.info/zvbv , but
what do you think? I think it is mad cool from what I saw at my friend’s house,
and am thinking of signing up later today. Basically it's a regular
personalssite, but with an instant message and Webcams system built in.
Basically you join their chat-room on their site it gives you a link to those
people online in the chat-room, their location, their picture, etc and at one
click you can start chatting to them over Webcam (even if you don't have one).
Pretty nifty stuff I think!

Just thought I should pass on my knowledge to all you guys (and gals) on here. I
know just like heaps of other men I am pretty shy when it comes to going up to
someone. I've tried a few different places (clubs, bars, etc) but never seem to
have too much luck. Anyway, a few weeks ago I joined up to
http://www.theonlinechatroomz.info/atru and I have to say I am already getting
excited. I was beginning to think I'd end up being alone for ever, but already
been talking to a few interested ladies on there. Anyway, if you're like me it
comes highly recommended!

Subject: pango.biz - independent artist auction website

Hello,

I would like to reach out to independent artists such as filmmakers,
musicians, and authors who are interested in self-distributing their creative
content straight to the consumer bypassing traditional distributors. I have
created PANGO (www.pango.biz) the first independent artist auction website to
the marketplace and it is free to both independent artists and consumers.

Below is a recent newspaper story:

   Regards,
   Bryan Duran

   Cutting out the middle man
Glendale resident Bryan Duran hoping his new website pango.biz takes off with
creative types.
By Vince Lovato
(Published: January 15, 2006)

The creator of pango.biz hopes it will become the eBay for independent
filmmakers, authors and musicians.

Glendale resident Bryan Duran launched pango.biz -- a site where independent
artists sell their books, films or CDs without going through a distributor,
publisher or studio -- on Jan. 1.

"There's something missing," said Duran, a USC graduate who has worked for
major Hollywood studios such as 20th Century Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros.
"Independent artists have to go through a gatekeeper so there's something
between the artist and the consumer in the American film market."

Studios, publishers and music labels spend millions to produce, distribute and
market their products so they can't take chances with unknown artists or taboo
subjects, Duran said.

"[At Pango] there is no one trying to impose their taste on the public," Duran
said. "The buyer gets to say what they want to hear, watch, see or read."

Without that open marketplace, independent artists have been left with trying
to win contests or film festivals to earn some recognition while often
languishing financially, Duran said.

"Through this [site] the filmmaker gets the biggest rewards possible," he
said. "If they sell a CD, DVD or book through a major distributor they will get
hit with distribution fees, marketing fees and interest. Here, if you sell a DVD
for $20 you are going to get the 20 bucks."

"Right now the website is free to all users. But as the number of users grow
... I will look in to a fee-based or advertising supported [site] kind of like
eBay."

Brothers John and Kieron Estrada want to fill a niche for nontraditional
Latino-based films with productions like their own "Space Banda," a "Spaceballs"
takeoff with Latino characters.

"It is absolutely frustrating," said John Estrada. "The people we are talking
to all agree that the Latino marketplace is untapped and the potential is huge
and here we are with a different take on the types of movies that have never
been done before but they won't take the chance."
The website, coupled with the interest in other artists to drive traffic to
the site, will help everyone, Estrada said.

"There is no outlet for short independent movies ... except for selling it out
of your trunk," Estrada said. "But we can drive hits to the Pango website,
network with other artists and make our own publicity and devise ways to get the
word out that this movie is available with creative people who are in the same
boat we are."

www.PANGO.biz - the world's first online platform that allows Independent
Talent (filmmakers, musicians, and authors) to reach out to the ultimate
Consumer bypassing Distributors in an auction format.
