A few notes on the just announced InterMountain Canadian Grain hoppers.

This car was the first HO scale model released by InterMountain in 1993.
It has remained their best seller with some paint schemes (Red Canada)
now numbering over 100 road numbers released.

Hallmark is also offering the Berkshire steam that is featured in Polar
Express. I've seen it and it looks like it might be fairly close to Z scale
Not too bad a looking loco if you don't get up too awfully close. The
three foot rule would certainly work in this case.

I picked up one of the M-10000 sets last night, but haven't had a chance to
measure it yet.Ā  It seems about the right size, but since the prototype train
itself was a little on the small side, I can't tell for sure until I dig out my
drawings and compare the measurements.

The gauge is about 7.5mm which is big for Z, but gauge doesn't mean much for
Hallmark ornaments.Ā  It scales out to about 78' long and 12-14' wide for the
power unit, which sounds about right for a passenger car, but as I said, this
was a small train.

I saw the polar express train as well.Ā  No tender (not really a problem), and
it is plastic and not as detailed as some other Hallmark ornaments, but it does
seem to be the right size.Ā  I haven't bought one yet (forgot and left my coupon
at home).

In October, they will release the miniature train set with a steam engine
(2-4-2), tender, and gondola.Ā  Might or moght not be too small.

The UP set does appear to be close to Z scale. The miniature sets tend to be too
small for Z scale. The Polar Express steamer may be useable as a park engine.
Needs a tender.

I measured the whole three car set last night (The only prototype dimension I
could find online was the length of the entire three car train set) and it
scales out about 3% larger than Z or about 1/210th scale.  Width measures out to
11.5' wide (in 1/220).

Interesting thing about this set is that the cars are joined together by magnets
in the articulated part/vestibule section instead of by couplers.  The power car
is cast metal and the cars are plastic.  I noticed that the brown paint color on
the power car is slightly different than on the cars, probably due to one being
metal and the other being plastic.

The M-10000 was a three car set as this ornament set is, but the box says it is
a model of (the Lionel toy train of) the M-10001 which was run as a longer train
set with a sleeper.  The car numbers used don't quite seem to match up though.
Still have to check that (as well as dig out my drawings that are currently
buried in the basement).

This is one I've personally been hoping for for a long time.

There is a difference between the UP M-1000x trains and Lionel's versions. It's
true that the UP (prototype) City of Portland entered service as a 6-car train.
But AFAIK, Lionel's version of the CoP was only three cars total with perhaps an
available extra car (I don't have any Lionel prewar catalogs to confirm, but
their more recent commemorative issue of the M-10000 had an optional extra car).
The 752W, 753, and 754 numbers on the ornaments (Lionel numbers) are consistent
with prewar models I've seen (although there was also a 752E engine, both in UP
colors -- I'm not sure the difference between the two issues, perhaps the E was
City of Salina M-10000).

I have an original copy of the Ranks/Kratville UP Streamliners book, which
contains a museum full of photos (including construction and component photos)
and drawings of these extraordinary trains. The M-1000x series is by far my
favorite in all of traindom.

ACI (Automatic Car Identification) labels were an early attempt at car
tracking. Each car was to have a label on each side at a standard
height. Label readers along side of the track would automatically read
them as the cars went by. Sadly although the idea was good there were
several issues, the main one being dirt that obscured the labels. As
well technology wasn't ready yet. The idea lingered on to eventually
become the AEI RFId tag. Although the ACI system died after a few years
the labels on the cars lasted for decades.

You can find some ACI info at: http://www.nakina.net/other/aci/aci.html

One neat detail is that many of AZL's new released include ACI labels. This
little multicolored detail is really a nice touch. You can see them on
AZL's PS2-cd release. So far, these labels have appeared on the Sante Fe, GTW,
Milwaukee Road, and Illinois Central releases. You can see photos of the cars
at:

Expect to see such labels on AZL's upcoming GP30 release.

Thanks for the explanation of ACI labels. I would think that graffiti
might have been a problem, as well as dirt. Or do the graffiti people
generally avoid interfering with vital labels (I've noticed that they've
generally avoided obscuring road numbers).

Graffiti "artists" (okay, some are quite good) could care less about painting
over essential information. They're vandals, pure and simple.

What you may be seeing is the owner railroad is repainting road numbers (at the
very least) when the car comes home for repairs/inspection. They leave the rest
of the "art" to save labor and it's an extra layer of paint to protect the body.
Look closely at a car that has a remarkably clean road number but the rest
of/most of the body is littered with graffiti - you'll find the area with the
road number/reporting marks is generally fresher than, say, the paint higher on
the body...out of the "artists" reach.

It's an opportunity to model a modern car by cutting out the graffiti around the
reporting marks/road numbers.

You might also note that tank cars tend to have less graffiti than box cars. I'm
guessing tank cars are often kept behind fences for loading/unloading, making
them less available for "art".

Have fun,
Joe Krepps, Secretary for Keystone Chapter - European Train Enthusiasts <-sadly
seeing more graffiti on European cars these days

I like beer. On occasion I will even drink beer to celebrate a major event such
as the fall of communism or the fact that the refrigerator is still working!!!!!

Sorry - that should have gone direct to Rob, not the list.

My apologies!

Tom and all,

Sorry for the confusion and craziness on the last issue. Our distributor
sorted our mailing list incorrectly. This caused all issues to go out with the
wrong name on the envelope. Most issues are arriving in a timely fashion,
but we are getting some returned which we are turning around and mailing back
out the next time.

All should be corrected in time for the next issue.

Rob,

My mailing label had three choices on it, it read as follows..........

1 Tooth fairy
2 Idiot
3 Hey you

I think I will go with door #1

I finally sat down this morning with the latest copy and enjoyed reading it
while eating breakfast.

The Dan Klionsky interview with Will Wright was great and I want to
reiterate to those in the Z world that are NOT involved with manufacturing..
.. that most folks have no idea of the tremendous amount of time, energy,
and money spent in making any sort of Z scale product. Will's home cottage
industry, (literally) which consumes his whole house apparently is a perfect
example of the 'messes' we manufacturers have to endure. It is amazing how
little projects seem to somehow gobble up every bit of counter space,
cupboards, shelves, boxes, desks, and more in order to produce the products.

Rob, you have told me how much you would like to make a living from Z, so I
ask.......is your house big enough? :o) I think Z scale is not only a fun
disease to be afflicted with, but to watch how it seems to take over any
empty space. And here we say that Z is so space saving and yet it gobbles
up all we allow it to. Maybe Z room empires are soon to appear.

Hat's off to Will for sticking with it and becoming a main stay of our hobby
Will and I have talked in the past also and he would agree with me that Z
manufacturing is a full time job.....in addition to the regular mundane
things we normally do to make a living.

Kudos to you too Rob for the Trackside Perspective article regarding the
convention. For those who wanted to come but couldn't, the adventure was
almost pure bliss. Almost I say because anyone who was there would have to
vote for 'poor lighting' as the most frustrating' aspect of the venue and
the low public attendance on Saturday's open house was also disappointing.
MTL did all they could to advertise well in advance using every medium
available, but the fact that there were two other shows going on in Medford
that weekend didn't help the situation any. Other than those two items, fun
was had by all in attendance.

One scene that I saw repeated several times really made me chuckle. AZL
made announcement at Saturday's public open house of their upcoming new
products. I believe it was every 20 minutes for a couple of hours that Rob
would walk around handing out upcoming new product flyers. Every time he
came up to me with flyers in his hand he had this 'little kid with a new
baseball glove' look on his face.

At first I wasn't tuned in to the scope of his announcements, but after
several surprise flyers were thrust into my hand it quickly became apparent
that Rob was in his element and having a ball. Rob knows how to get
excited!!!!!

Last but certainly not least I want to put in a plug for Z Track Magazine.
It IS the best magazine for Z scalers and while some might find fault with
certain aspects of the magazine, such as not enough coverage on.....you fill
in the blanks, Z Track exposes the masses to all the important goings on in
the Z world as well as showcases many new products and has fine editorial
and picture content.

I'm sure Z Track would gladly share any worthwhile articles and pictures
that folks would like to contribute. Why not get a subscription and 'tune
in' even better to the pulse of Z scale.

Z scalers are a unique blend of many personalities and talents.

Now go out and model !!
Loren

10 Vrms but the defaults from the NCE Power Cab or Digitrax Zephyr will run
