I hate to do this Roy but , to help all the other guys talking about
this problem , Micro Mark sells a DC Volt meter for $19.95 which reads 0
to 20 with the 0 in the center for reading forward and reverse. I have
4 of them in circuit with my Dual Tech 2 and Dual Tech 4 for a lot less
than a century note . I personally get along quite nicely with only one
5-0-5 ammmeter which may be switched into any one of the 4 circuits I
may feel a need to monitor

       Happy "Z"ing Nel

Hello Bob,

How's it going? Chris gave me a call a couple a days
ago to let me know about the church and I am looking
forward to it. I plan to use it in my new layout once it
is released. A New England church will be charming
to a tee!

If you do open a White Box Controller, just swap the red & brown terminal
sleeves before you close it up again (note how the arrangement of the
terminals on the back is different from earlier units, which rather suggests
that there has been an error on the production line, possibly brought about
by incorrect drawings/assembly instructions)

But do check carefully before you do anything, as M. (or whoever makes the
units for them - one of my older Mini-Club Controllers is clearly labelled
"Siemens") could by now have spotted the problem and corrected it in later
output batches

As long as we are on the subject of wiring what is the best size wire to use?
And what does this correspond to in millimeters?

Many thanks!

I broke down and bought a Tech 4 pack with built
in voltage and amperage meters. It cost nearly a hundred bucks, but I kick

myself for not buying one sooner, it's an invaluable tool to measure loco
performance and catch binding mechanisms before they become smoke
generators.

Do you find the meters granular enough? It seems like the throw for
Voltage, and especially for Amperage, is way to short...what I mean is: You
can't tell the difference between 2 and 3 volts....and certainly not the
difference between .03 and .09 amps...Right?

Or have you not found that to be a problem? I know I even complained
about the Amperage meters on my HO MRC pak....NOt a Tech 4, but the Top of
the line one with Meters at the time...Like a 9500 or something....

Anyway, can you REALLY see a difference in Amperage between locomotives?

Howdy all!

I'm back in Dallas for two weeks vacation after working the better
part of two months in the Los Angeles area (sans a week working in
Miami), and am finally getting to play trains again.

The Texas & Beyond MRHS will be displaying the expaning Texas &
Beyond RR Z Top (Z scale modules on tabletops) layout this weekend at
the Great American Train Show in Mesquite, Texas. There's a link on
our website with show info.

If you're in the area, come by and see us!

Hi Gang,

Adam and the gang will be joined by David George at the Mesquite
(Dallas) Great American Train Show.

Of the 4 layouts listed, two are "Z"!

Golden-Blackhawk & Central City RR 25' x 16' - Z Scale
Tex-N Modular Railroad Club 36' x 31' - N Scale
Ark-La-Tex Modular Club 50' x 24' - HO Scale
Texas & Beyond Model RR 28' x 18 — Z Scale

Have a great show, guys.

Cheers,
Jeffrey

I would say thicker and more strands is better (but you need to be practical
about it) as it increases the electrical surface area and reduces voltage drop.

Jeffrey,

I will be presenting the clinics this weekend. In addition to the
Intro to Z scale I'm doing one on the Bullet Trains of Japan (for
which Stephen Moore built a wonderful display board [thanks again
Dave Fossett!!! http://www.h2.dion.ne.jp/~dajf/byunbyun/index.htm])
and a brief introduction to the Tokyo Rail System, on which our next
layout (The J Project) is based.

The Z clinic will be a simple introduction to Z scale and the modular
systems that have been developed. Plus basically "building up" the
fact that so much more work goes into Z, being the product lines
available for Z are rather limited compared to HO or N scale...

This is partially an effort to build appreciation for the work we do
(there's a lot of scratchbuilding on the T&B), and also to garner
votes in the contest :-) .

Hey, you don't ask... You don't get.

I got to meet David George this evening. Nice fella. His layout is
very impressive. For as nice as it is, though, I have to give MAJOR
(not Captain, this is a step above) kudos to Tom Browning for his new
module of Alpine, Texas (inside corner). It is fantastic!

We'll have a couple of digital cameras down there this weekend, so
look for pictures to be up on the website in the next couple of days!

Tom, Stephen and I took about 2 hours assembling the layout this
evening. Our floor placement was a little awkward but once we got
the tables in the right position we were on our way and running by 7
or so. It was the first time we've had Tom's modules in with ours,
and it makes somewhat of a hook-shaped layout, running dogbone
style. The other 4 layouts were still in varying stages of setup
when we were leaving.

So, we look forward to a fun weekend of running in Mesquite!

Jaa, mata ne!
Adam

Hi Gang,

***** NTS2003 in TORONTO HAS BEEN CANCELLED! *****

This announcement comes as a disappointment. Sadly,
it seemed unavoidable with the recent new outbreak of
SARS in Toronto. My original enquiry to NTS and the
official statement from Debbie Draper, Train Show
Registrar, follow below.

Stating the obvious, the Z supper will not take place
nor, I suppose, will the clinics I had been scheduled
to give. There was some discussion of reschuling the
train show in the US. However no decision has been
nade public at this time.

More information will be posted here as it becomes
available.

Keep the trainZ rollin'

Dear Jeffrey and Friends,

I was afraid that this might happen. I spoke to Rob Kluz
yesterday and when he mentioned that Marklin and
Kalmbach had cancelled, I knew it was pretty much over.

But I would agree, it is best to err on the side of safety
and public health.

Let's hold that "Best New Product" award until the NTS
in Seattle 2004. I'll be glad to share the spotlight with
whoever wins this years' product award.

Best regards,
Reynard

Ok, when you're talking hundreths of amps, the answer is NO. My response
is, I don't need to. The meters are analog, which I prefer to digital to
visually see dynamic fluctuations, which are a good indication of certain
problems, and the difference in hundreths of amps between locos is
irrelevant as far as I'm concerned, but when an 8800 mechanism starts
pulling nearly an amp unloaded, it's time to start looking for problems.
I agree with one response that if you have a layout with DC block control,
it's much better to build meters into the panel, but my layout is DCC and I
use the power pack on any of the three workbenches or with one of the two
display layouts.

If you don't want to save the decal, use a "setting" solution to soften the
decal, let it set for a few minutes, then rub off (gently) with a SOFT cloth or
tissue paper. IUf you want to save and re-use the decal, I don't know.

Dear Adam,

I am very interested, to get some more info on the Z-modular systems
you will explain to the audience at the clinics.

By the way, I lived for three years in Dallas, Texas. So, Mesquite sounds
familiar. 'Six Flags over Texas', isn't it in your area?

Greetings

Dieter

Hello Z-scale.
Now I can finally model the stuff I want to without restraint. I
have room for a 2' x 4' layout. Double track mainline, here I come!
All I need are some 8530s to go with my 195mm curves.
Let's see. The Pacific in my 81535 sure looks great. And the Mikado
in my 81466 is nice. Wish the wheels were blackened like the
Pacific's.
You know, I bet the Mikado is going to look a lot better on 220mm
curves. If it does, then the 8520 195mm curves are gonna look kinda
bad. Well, I can always use the 8530s for the inner main, and use
flex track to make the outer main. Now the curves are going to take
up more space, so I'll just extend the layout a little. I can do a 2'
x 5' layout.
Oh boy! Some one is dumping IC passenger cars (8724-8728)on ebay.
Bet I can find someplace to repaint it in green and orange to match
my MT Great Northern F7A and B. Not really American passenger cars,
but the paint job should make it look good, and the Vista Dome could
pass for American if I squint.
But those cars are long. They might not look too good on 220mm
curves. I'll just bump up to 12" radius on the outside main (304mm).
Now I'm really railroading!
Hm-m-m-m. Now that my outside main is 2 feet, gonna have to bump up
the layout to 2 1/2 feet wide. No sweat. But those curves are gonna
take up even more length. Plus my passenger train needs some room on
the straight for a station. I'll just bump up to 2 1/2' by 6'.

You know, I seem to remember having this conversation with myself
before. It was right about the time I decided to leave N scale :)

Your question prompted me to consider a different aspect
of the matter -- not so much reducing the space dimension
by 220, but rather the relation of space AND time between
Z and the prototype.

The genesis of my pondering comes from my own
question: why does it take me so long to put together a
building kit? Am I just slow, or what?

After thinking about the matter, I have come to the following
conclusion: If it takes me about 15 hours to paint and
assemble a Z scale kit, this is – in my mind – equivalent to
3300 Z-hours. At 8 Z-hours in a Z-workday, this about
412.5 Z-workdays, or about 82 Z-workweeks.

But since it is unlikely that a train station, or brick factory
would be built by one person alone, I have hired – [again]
in my mind – an additional 9 people to help me. So I
realize that it really takes only about 8+ Z-workweeks for
my work crew to paint and assemble such a structure.

Hey! I realize that is pretty good! I'm not so slow after all!
I feel better already.

[I am just back and catching up on a few weeks
of emails, so please forgive the `step backwards".]

I too had been suffering from a very similar experience
(especially the rope part!). My two locos are Märklin
8895 (five pole 2-6-0) and Märklin 8899 (three pole 4-6-0)
steamers.

I had the good fortune, a couple of weeks ago, of taking my
locos to Terry Sutfin's house and running them on the
Poorville and Debt City. They ran fine -- smooth, no
hesitation and well at slow speeds. He graciously lent me
a few of his (4 axle and 6 axle Märklin Diesel and
Electrics) to try on my layout. Because of the much longer
wheel base I was able to `see' problems in the track
which were not apparent otherwise.

Terry also questioned me about my tack nails. I was sure
they had not been put in too deeply (which I could verify
with an optivisor!), but he wondered if the tight fit in the
molded-in hole might still create enough friction to cause
just enough binding [leteral movement of the rail heads]
to be a problem. (This guess was prompted by the fact that
the locos run very well on the two sections on Faller bridges
where NO nails had been used.)

I proceeded to remove ALL the nails (track was already held
in place by ballast and glue), and some of the problems
cleared up right away.

Just a bit of experience which might be of help to you, or
someone.

Hello ELF

I found out a long time ago that Z track is real sensitive to
the slightest incursions, misalignments, off cambers,
"S" curves and white glue. Marklin track works excellent right out
of the box because basically we haven't interfered with
it much when we first play with it. Take a new track set,
connect it together and everything will work fine but
once you start pinning it down, adding ballast and
warping it to fit your track plan things can get pretty bad.

Keeping the track somewhat loose and coplanar helps
tremendously and I now pin my track down on the outside
of the ties.

Hello Keith,

I am just as disappointed as you are. It is a real hardship
for all of us. US citizens would come to your aid if your nation
were attacked and I am sure that many US experts are at
this very moment contributing to a solution to the SARS
tragedy in concert with Canadian health experts.

When hard times hit let us try to find a little joy in our hobbies
and fellowship in those interests.

As for Bigfoot, I think the FBI caught him last year and he
turned to be just a guy in a gorilla suit with nothing better
to do.

Take care,
