Hello group,

I have just uploaded 3 pics to the z_scale file area at
www.onelist.com

They are: ny_jig1.jpg (17 kb), track_1.jpg (24 kb) and track3a.jpg (14
kb)

The pics illustrate my activities in the past week.
I have made considerable progress in my "track factory" (at least I
think so) but there is still a long way to go before I can run trains
on my handlaid track.

About the pics:

ny_jig1.jpg:

My new jig, The knife blade arrangement is the same as it was in my
old jig. A couple of extra blades have been added only for the reason
of stability, so that the metal plates (former computer blinds) exert
a ballanced pressure on the edge-to-edge blades.
A print-out (track template) is taped to the base to indicate where
the pcb ties are to be soldered to the rail.

In the foreground is a slat from a venetian blind taped to the base.
It is nescessary to press the rail/tie assembly against a ruler of
some kind to get a straight track. (curved tracks I imagine that can
be built in situ pinned to a template) The slat was the only thing I
could find stiff enough to serve as a ruler and at the same time being
thin enough to let the rail gauges "ride" the head of the rail. The
rail/tie assembly is secured in position with BluTak.

track3a.jpg:

The jig seen as I see it when I do the soldering. The rail is pushed
thru the slit between the blades - rail foot down.
For every inch there is a marked tie on the template. A pcb tie-strip
is put between rail and template and the tie is soldered to the rail.
Then the rail is pushed forward until the just-soldered tie covers the
next marked tie on the template. A new tie strip is inserted between
rail and template at the first position - soldered to the rail -
pushed forward etc etc.
The tie strip nearest to the blades hasn't been soldered yet.

And then: Da, da-da-da <drum. vaw) track_1.jpg:

My Carlsberg beer car on my first 12 cm. of track. (skaal!)

The ends of the wooden ties should of course have been "painted" to
hide the non-weathered cut surfaces. They could have been cut with
greater accuracy also, but I'll have to think about how to proceed
from here. I must find a way to do the actual track-laying in situ
wooden ties and all.

The wooden ties must be cut *before* laying - I guess - and I must
find a way to glue the combination of rail/pcb-ties and wooden ties
onto the layout.

It is late now - I'll drink a 1:1 size Carlsberg and go to bed.

My most sincere thanks to those of you who have helped me with your
valuable advise on soldering etc. Without it I wouldn't have managed!

regards Ole Rosted, Denmark

Hi folks!

You probably know by now that I due to to much work and to little time are
downsizing my Z-scale layout plans to fit into the amount of time and energy
I have nowadays (it's buzy days in the Broadband networks world, but it's
rather fun so I'll stay around even if the pay don't match the hours spent).

In line with that am thinning down my collection of Z-scale items and got
some things for sale. Sofar 60% of all my items are sold but there are still
some exclusive ones left and also a lot of standard stuff in very good,
almost new condition.

Interrested? Have a look at: http://www.lattermann.com/amaZing/

Best regards from Stockholm/Sweden!

Aha, so thats why. I haven't got a single letter for days.
I thought the reason to be, that you all were at the train show in
Texas.

But then there is the two letters I sent? - they don't appear to have
reached the group. Let's see about this one.

For my part it will be: building tracks :-)

Hi all,

I am still trying to locate Steam Locomotive 8886 or 8889. It is a German
fully streamlined model. It is in grey with red under carriage and may have
red highlights on the body.

I have a picture if anyone does not know what I am on about.

I was after one when they came out but only had New Zealand dollars to play
with :-( Now I'm working in London and the tables have turned :-) Pun
possibly intended.

If anyone has one they no longer want or know of one sitting in a nearby
shop collecting dust please email me.

Thanks in advance,

Well I thought I would post my thoughts and some pictures and movies
of the Z_Track Z scale Train Show in Richardson Texas. I would like
to thank the efforts of Rob Kluz and all of the associates that
helped put this show on. The effort everyone put forth was great and
very much appreciated. It was a Z modelers Dream. A full Train show
dedicated to Z. The show was great and I believe the majority (I
think everyone?) won a door prize. I won a MT Illinois Central box
car, it was quite a nice gift. There was also a raffle for some other
nice prizes. It was also a good show to find additional Z modelers to
talk to and match names to faces. Jeffery from Atlanta, receives the
Award for furthest traveled for the Z show, and for buying the most
Penzee Hoppers 60+ at one show. Cyrus Lum brought his scratch built
steam liners. A New York Central, and a Blue B&O design. There were
some Z scale dealers, 3 large layouts, and a few smaller ones. There
was a class on how to make hand laid track, and switches.
Just wanted to say thanks for the effort everyone put into the show.
I€  '²d certainly like to attend next year, if it€  '²s in the plans.
  I€  '²ve
uploaded some photos and movie files. They are in Photos directory in
the Z_TrackShow folder.
Thanks Again,

Glenn,

Lokshop in Germany currently shows the Marklin 8889 locomotive in stock for
about USD 120.00 inclusive of VAT at the current exchange rate. If you don't
have to pay the VAT the price should be even lower, around USD 100.00.

A hot link to their English homepage is below. If that doesn't work through
the list the page's address is also below.

Well, I finally feel well enough to sit down and share my thoughts of what an
incredible weekend of Z scale we has last weekend. I was struck with a
terrible virus the night before the show and was not doing too well Saturday,
but only 5 days later, I feel well enough to get on a computer.

Friday was the start for me. I finally met Billy Roden, who was the driving
force behind the Richardson Show. Amazingly, by chance, we met up with Bill Kr
onenberger, and Chad Bryan from Houston, three cars apart, in traffic on a
busy highway! Talk about timing! Bill's van was filled with modules from the
Z-Bend Track groups impressive collection. I could not wait to see them set
up.

Friday was a day filled with trains and visiting such amazing shops like
Discount Trains and Collectible Trains and Toys. Our host, Cherri at
Collectible's was wonderful. I nice sign welcoming me was sitting on the Z
case! Collectible's was Märklin’s dealer of the year last year, and their
collection of Z was impressive. A Z scale Railex Adler set was sitting on the
shelf, WOW! We also me up with Jeffery White, an enthusiastic Z scaler from
Atlanta. We all walked away with bags in hand and wallets a little lighter.

After Collectibles, we drove over to the Dallas Garland and Mesquite's
Railway Club building to get a look at the Z modules. What a great Club! An
impressive HO and N scale layout greeted us as did the Z modules. It was
wonderful to finally see them in person. Here we met up with other members of
the club and had a great round table discussion.

The evening wrapped up with dinner, and a trip to the Civic Center to see the
room and meet Bruce Bernbaum, a local Märklin Z collector. In the next
e-mail, we will discuss the show!

Subject: Texas show, day 2!
ztrack@...
Send Email Send Email

Well Saturday morning came early! My spirits were pretty low do to being up
all night quite ill. Set up began at 6am. It soon became apparent that today
was going to be a good day. Bob's Model Railroad Supplies was on hand and
started unloading his huge Z display. The DG&M group had the modules up and
running in no time as did the Houston Z-Bend Track guys! Stan Jones of Z
Model Train Products brought an absolutely beautiful Z scale layout he
created specifically for the event. Reynard Wellman set up his booth with a
diorama to promote his line, Micron-Art.

At the front table, we had a huge array of door prizes and raffle items
donated by Märklin, Micro-Trains, Manchester Hobby Products, Micron-Art,
Micro-Structures, Bob's Model Railroad Supplies and Ztrack Magazine. Also at
the table as a selection of items from FR for sell. The Box Cab was a winner,
impressing everyone who saw it! PENNZEE had a selection of items for sell and
HomaBed sent a box of roadbed to pass out. Numerous flyers, and forms where
to be had!

The crowd was great. We had over 100 people come through the door. Almost all
were Z scalers! A number of states were represented including Bob Hawes who
flew in from Connecticut! It took no time to realize what a success the show
was. Some of the highlights of the show was a pull of 49 PENNZEE hoppers on
the Z-Bend Track layout. WOW! Billy Roden gave a detail seminar on hand
laying track. My health forced me to skip my seminar and head back to the
hotel for a few hours, but the show went on!

The show accomplished what I wanted it to. That was to bring Z scalers
together. The show was free, with Ztrack picking up the expenses. To look
around the room and see the excitement on everyone's face or the surprise to
see so much Z scale in one room, that is what was impressive. Is was also
wonderful to put faces with names of subscribers, Randy Davis, Joseph Jodl,
Cyrus Lum, Mark Mackin, Dave Huffhines, there were so many. YES, it was a
great day.

The show though would not have been possible without the help of some really
special people. Bruce Bernbaum was incredible helping us to set up and run
the show, especially when I could not fulfill my duties. Jeffery White was
every where helping and having a blast! Bill and Chad from Houston where
great and tremendous boost to the show. And Billy Roden, I cannot saw enough
about Billy. Without him, this show never would have happened (and the door
prizes probably never would have been drawn). Thank you all for your support.

NMRA show in St. Louis in 2001 anyone?

Thank you for pointing me in the correct direction!

I was in the files | pictures folder, but didn't notice the
Z-Track Show folder. My fault - sorry!

I downloaded the Houston_Layout_1.mpg
Great clip. I'll go for the rest of the files, when telephone-prices
are halved later this evening. (Prices go down between 19.30 and 08.00
here)

Using a 56k modem you have to take cheap hours into consideration.

Any way of giving a short description of some of the persons on the
pics/.mpgs ? I mean - some way of connecting clothes with names?

It would be interesting to get to know the people, I'm "talking" to
almost every day, a little better.

Rob:

On behalf of the 100+ people at the Richardson show last
Saturday, let me thank you for sponsoring the event and
giving those of us who attended a chance to meet, talk, and
exchange ideas and gossip. It was a great day!

Similar thanks to the Dallas/Richardson/Garland guys who
made the event such a success.

I know all of us can't wait for next year!

New to this list, sorry if auction postings are taboo. Suggestions
of
other places to let folks know about my layout appreciated.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=311528905

This layout is varied and complex. My goal was to fit as much as
possible on a tabletop layout without cramming it too close together.
This layout cost over $4300 and took hundreds of hours when I built
it
in 1990. I've been told that Marklin rolling stock has increased in
value.

Major Features:
* 28.75" by 58.5", red oak, removable plexiglass cover, bottom is
     plexiglass.
* 3 independent track lines linked by double-slip switches, can be
     operated as 1 large line.
* Over 2 scale miles of ballasted track.
* 5 locomotives and 27 cars, including the Orient Express Set.
* 35 buildings & structures, many with hand-painted details.
* 16 trucks, 1 bus, 16 cars, 40 people, 100 trees.

Please visit the eBay page for more info and for a link to my web
pages
with detailed info & many pictures:

Rob:

You are absolutely correct. It was a wonderful day for all that could
attend. After seeing all those layouts, I have decided that:

Z SCALE ISN'T JUST FOR COFFEE TABLE LAYOUTS ANYMORE.

It has arrived as a real scale to model in.

And Ole, you should have been there for the 14:00 demonstration on handlaying
track. Your name was mentioned a dozen times during the lecture. We were
thinking of you, and wishing you could see Bill Roden take the mystery out of
the assembly of code 40 turnouts.

The Dallas DG&M group is clearly superior to us in Houston when it comes to
scenery. We now have a clear goal - to catch up with them. Their superior
ability to air brush brass buildings and put together realistic towns and
scenery was really something to see.

Stan Jones had a layout with the finest trackplan I've seen in a long time.
He had a view block down the middle, and trains would disappear into a tunnel
on one side, and reappear on the other side. A master in "hidden view"
design. Made two trains look like four trains. Very nice buildings made of
paper then painted and assembled. Well done.

Micron-Art had a diorama which would be a perfect switching puzzle, for those
of you into operations. Of course, it was packed with all those nice
buildings they make.

Penzee wasn't there, but the supply of things he sent made a significant
impact on my financial status. Outstanding products. I bought a fistfull of
his trailing trucks for my mikado's and pacific's. Watch out MicroTrains and
Marklin, there is a new kid on the block, and he's overtaking you fast.

For those that have limited time, Bob's trains had four, yes four, excellent
pre-built layouts for sale. All hand made to a very high standard of
construction and scenery.

The part of the Z-Bend Track layout we brought along was home to visiting
trains, including Cyrus' latest scratch built steamer. Wow! If I could only
make my hands do what his hands can do. And you've seen the 49 car coal
train by now on the movies that Mack put on the eGroups page. Richard (from
Atlanta) clearly likes long drags just as much as we do. We tried, but we
just couldn't make all 60 of his cars run on the layout, even with pusher
locomotives. But 49 ran great with a train length around 16 feet / 5 meters
and triple head end power.

I spent my normal $$ amount, but less than $$ was reported to my wife (cash
sales are not traceable on the credit card back to my habit, I mean hobby).
But my fellow modeler Chad (who is a bachelor) spent nearly $1,000usd over
the two day period. Rob was also correct in that temptations were everywhere.

What's next. Well, we have to catch up with Dallas on scenery. Build more
modules. Build a "T" module so we can mate up with their layout and run both
layouts together as one. And figure out how we can get all that stuff packed
in cars for to the next opportunity to see all those great folks again and
run trains.

Thanks Rob, for getting us all together for one heck of a day.

Thanks to Billy and all who worked so hard to set up this show. My
wife was excited to finally see Z trains running and layouts in a
completed state :). Special thanks to Bill K. for showing me the
high-tech track connector tool--I've already built one and it works
great! A highlight of the show for me was winning a door prize about
2 minutes after I registered. And of course the wallet was
significantly lighter after I visited the Micron Art and Bob's
booths.

Hope this happens again next year!

Dave

I'm not in the market for a new layout but I did look at
your web page. That is a very nice layout. It looks
like you spent alot of time on the details.
Nice job
John

Hi Bill,

Wanted to let you know I appreciated the picture show. For those of us
unable to attend the Dallas show at leas we got some insight on what the
modules looked like ans some of the people who were able to attend. I was
particuarly impressed by the Houston coal train.
