History of "World Youth Day "
World Youth Day is an event that brings Catholic youth together from more than 150 countries around the world. These young people gather to grow deeper in their faith through various events. The young people gather with The Holy Father and by uniting the young with the old, true happiness and spirituality is shared.
World Youth Day 2002 is not the first event of its kind - it is in fact the seventeenth WYD. The first one took place in Rome in 1984, and other host cities (countries) have been: Rome (Italy) 1984; Buenos Aires (Argentina) 1987; Santiago de Compostela (Spain) 1989; Czestochowa (Poland), 1991; Denver (U.S.A.) 1993; Manila (Philippines), 1995; Paris (France) 1997; Rome (Italy) 2000; and Toronto (Canada) 2002.
World Youth Day is designed for Catholics ranging in age from 16-35, but those of all ages and faith groups can participate as well. Organizers rarely anticipate major problems even though there are upwards of 500,000 young people who attend WYD. Pilgrims show consideration for each other as well as towards everyone they encounter throughout their journey.
The culmination of the WYD events is in the closing Papal Mass. In fact, in 1995 at the WYD in Manila, Phillipines, a world record was set as the largest crowd in human history gathered for the final Papal Mass.
