How about those election results? Did you see that among the top ten vote getters were the porn actress and Gary Coleman? I liked the comment by one of the standup comedians. It concerned Ariana Huffington who sanctimoniously crusaded against richies who paid no taxes. Then it was revealed that she herself last year paid only $720 in taxes although she’s worth a fortune. The comedian’s line was that California should elect as governor Ariana Huffington’s accountant. Is this a great state or what?

Comcast has two distinct cable systems in the area.
One is the Walnut Creek system, and the other is the Contra Costa
County system. They differ in the lineup of channels offered. We're on
the Contra Costa County system (judging by the channel listing). The
biggest difference is (for me at least) is that WC gets Bravo and we
don't. I'd like to try to get us switched to the WC system.
Is this an issue that others care about, pro or con?
I have a name and number at Comcast but I wanted to see if others agree
first.
I called the Rossmoor switchboard to ask to talk to the GRF person in
charge of the Comcast relationship and the swithchboard operator said
"no one." She thought the mutuals handle it. Somehow I doubt this
though. I'd like to work this issue through the main Rossmoor contact.
It would be nice also to get a discounted rate on cable internet....
I installed sliding wire baskets that fit into a modular rack without hiring
anybody. I think I got them at Home Depot. Very cheap, a good fit to my space
beside the refrigerator, and the system works OK.

1. The Container Store, near Andronico’s and the new CSAA office, has sliding shelves (if fading memory serves). They likely can suggest an installer as well. The place is an interesting store to visit even if you don’t buy their shelves. (I have no investment in this endeavor.)
2. The president of Rossmoor’s woodshop is a retired podiatrist named Jules Rosen (952-4939). A close friend of mine has used him for this very purpose – installing slide-out shelving. He makes custom shelves if you have a non-standard size space, which is my friend’s situation. She tells me that he is reasonable, more than competent and pleasant to deal with. She speaks highly of the Mr. Rosen.
3. With regard to the ads in the Rossmoor News, you have to be careful who you call. Under the handyman ads, I can tell you from personal experience that more than one is incompetent and/or overpriced. Moreover, one of the advertisers is a genuine weirdo.
Whoever you call, get references and verify they are satisfied customers. This may sound like hackneyed advice, but it’s the best thing you can do with a stranger. And try not to settle for one or two references – they could be his in-laws primed to play along. Stranger things have happened. Hope I don’t sound paternalistic or paranoid, but I’m all thumbs and have learned this stuff the hard way myself.
4. My friend, who has done a lot of fixing-upping, recommends Willie’s Fixit. He advertises in the Rossmoor News. She says he’s a retired engineer. His phone is 935-5025. You can read his ad copy under “Handymen” in the classifieds.
Hope this helps. Slide out drawers are a godsend to anyone with a bad back, that’s a fact. Good luck.

The Mayhew Office Center at the corner of Mayhew and Vincent, just over the border of Pleasant Hill, has approx. 180 sq ft with window for $400 per mo., 1-yr lease required, includes utilities but no janitorial. It’s on the second floor. Contact is Bob Grimes, 938-6016, 3317 Vincent, PH 94523. A guy named Dean Dunivan is one of the owners, the one that my club has dealt with the most, same office.

Dear Brenda,
I would do fine with a 12-by-12. Second floor would be no problem. I would, however, need to have a window.
Thanks for your interest.

Dear fellow Rossmoorians,
I've had the good fortune to enjoy some low-rent office space in
Berkeley since retiring two years ago. But, now that I live in
Rossmoor, that's beginning to seem like a relatively long trip. I
would love to find some small bit of space in or near Rossmoor.
Not for doing any real business, mind you -- just a place to go,
hang out, read the paper, ruminate, write letters, maybe do
something creative now and then.
Anybody know of space that's available?

The Rossmoor library has that videotape, along with loads of other good ones. Their video rental program is one of Rossmoor’s best kept secrets. Any resident is entitled to a library card. I believe they are free, although most people throw five dollars or thereabouts in the kitty.
That library card, good forever, as far as I know, entitles you to three videotapes. You can keep them for a week. There’s no charge at all. Except if you keep them longer than a week, the fine is a dollar a day. That’s a lot less than Blockbuster charges. There’s even a night drop slot.
Their inventory includes semi-oldies but goodies like O Brother Where Art Thou, Pollock, Quiz Show, State & Main, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Traffic, Gangs of New York, Chicago, In the Bedroom, Fight Club, The Front, and The Grifters. There’s also a section of children’s films which includes the Hobbit movies, aka Fellowship of the Ring.
The library is in the Gateway complex. It’s open weekdays from noon until 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is staffed totally by volunteers. Unlike the rest of the new Gateway Clubhouse structure, a certain part of the library interior was financed by the library treasury itself, which came from resident donations accumulated for that purpose over the years.
Oh, and by the way, they have books too.

Wednesday night at the Peacock Theater, Ellen and I saw an extraordinary film by the German director Wim Wenders called "Wings of Desire." Its cast is all European, with one notable exception: Peter Falk of "Columbo" fame.
We liked it enough to look on the Internet and see if there was anything interesting to read about the film -- and, indeed, there is. Turns out there is an elaborate Web site that discusses it in great detail. It has some remarkable essays.

The following is the text of a letter I wrote to the Rossmoor News, which may
be printed in the near future. It concerns the bad service at Safeway, in
terms of the closing, during much of the day, of their Customer Service counter,
and the need for anyone requiring customer service to wait on a line of 6 or
7 people to get help from the cashier.
"ROSSMOOR SAFEWAY NEEDS TO IMPROVE SERVICE
"I believe that the local Safeway store has Rossmoor residents as its captive
audience, and does a disservice by not providing full-time customer service.
The customer service counter has limited hours, and frequently there is no
one in the office. In fact, since I drafted this letter, the hours of service
have been cut in half. I’ve never seen any other supermarket without full-time
service.
I recently called and was told that the day’s photo developing and printing
had been delivered. When I went to the store, there was no one at the desk
(according to the sign, it is closed afternoons) and no one in the office. Not
seeing the pictures in the box, I asked one of the baggers to find them. The
answer was "soon." I got the same response from an assistant manager working at
a register. There were perhaps six registers operating, with six or seven
people lined up behind each. The store was very crowded. I begged the
assistant
manager, who finally came to the counter and found the photos in a bag
concealed below the counter.
"When I protested the lack of full-time customer service and the consequent
customer disservice, I was told that Safeway believes that the store is
unprofitable and overstaffed, and pressure is constantly being brought to reduce
the overhead. She told me to call and register a complaint. I believe that we
at Rossmoor are being taken advantage of, and suggest that any residents who
agree with me call as well, and perhaps we can bring enough pressure to bear on
Safeway to improve its service."
"Philip Wesler
Canyonwood Court"
Although I put a number to call (the company headquarters at 1-877-SAFEWAY
(723-3929), which is toll free), in order to register a complaint, the paper's
policy is not to print phone numbers, so it doesn't appear in the letter.
However, I suggest that anyone who feels the same way I do call that number, and
tell them how we at Rossmoor, basically a captive audience, are being treated
like second class citizens. Also, please tell your friends in Rossmoor, who
might not receive this e-mail, and might also hold those same feelings, to call
that number. Perhaps we can do some good in that regard. It is hard to
believe that the store is overstaffed, and that they are losing money.

Hi
When doing alterations to your manor, Mutual Operations Division (MOD) is the place to go for an alterations permit. Their number is in the Rossmoor phone book. I believe Rosalee is the contact person there.
Trouble is, Rossmoor being Rossmoor, the phones are on the blink right now, and they don’t expect them to be fixed until Sept 20 or so – according to the notice playing now on our Channel 11. But try your luck.
I was up there Friday. They told me that if they manage to pick up an incoming call before the third ring, you make a connection. Otherwise you get a busy signal.
If you can’t get through (which I couldn’t for days) then you’ll have to visit them. See the map in the Rossmoor phone book. They’re up by the animal petting zoo on Rockview Drive.
MOD should be your most complete source of info. Another source would be your realtor. Still another would be other residents in your immediate area who also have ceiling radiant heat. It’s likely they have done the same type of remodeling or know someone who has.
A common practice is to post a note in garbage sheds near where you live, but this may not be practical in your situation – that would encompass quite a few garbage sheds.
If you take walks, try asking folks you see as you stroll along. My experience is that most Rossmoorians are eager to help out in this type of situation. And you’ll be surprised at the grapevine in this place. It’s more likely than you think that you’ll find someone who’s done the same thing.
Once this chat board grows, it will serve the same purpose, but more efficiently.
Good luck.

We are six weeks into our residency at Rossmoor and delighted with the choice we
made.
Now we're looking at a dining room chandelier and thinking that we'd like to replace
it. We're in a Piedmont floorplan with radiant heating in the ceilings. Where do I get
info about adding or removing hanging items from the ceilings without damaging the
radiant heating elements? And what are the asbestos issues in these buildings? I
don't know if I'm going to do this installation myself or seek a handyman or
electrician to do it but either way, I'd like to understand these issues before I buy a
fixture to replace the current one. Your knowledgable input is solicited.

Another building that (at least used to have) office space like that was the two-story office building on N. Main next to the WPLJ oldies bar out across from Cole European Autos. The office space I’m speaking of is (or at least was when I looked into it a few years ago) on the second floor. On the first floor was a car wash. You can hardly miss the place. The second floor is a walk up, and the building is clean but nothing fancy. My info is dated, but it might be worth a look.

I would do fine with a 12-by-12. Second floor would be no problem. I would, however, need to have a window.

Davis signs bill on new rights for residents of HOAs

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Millions of Californians who live in
neighborhoods governed by the private rules of homeowners
associations will have new rights to inspect their association's
financial records, according to a bill Gov. Gray Davis signed into
law Thursday.
Davis' action gives approximately 8 million Californians in

called it a consumer victory for California homeowners who pay more

"They have every right to know how their millions of dollars of

the Congress of California Seniors. The group sponsored the bill
because millions of retirees live in neighborhoods that share and
collectively finance swimming pools, lawn, street and roof
maintenance.
The bill by Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, is part
of a movement nationally to relax restrictions that come in
neighborhoods with private governments. Two more bills awaiting
Davis' signature would overturn association bans on flags, signs and
banners in front yards and give homeowners more rights to challenge
decisions made by their boards.
All are opposed by organizations representing homeowners
associations and many companies that contract with them to run and
maintain their facilities.
The new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, bill requires
homeowners associations to let their residents inspect and copy
minutes of board meetings and financial records that indicate their
costs for employees, vendors and contractors. But it allows
associations to withhold salary information for specific employees.
It also gives residents the right to file lawsuits to force
release of the information and provides for a $500 fine if
associations balk unnecessarily. But the bill also allows
associations to sue residents who misuse the information to damage
the association.
Paul Whisler, a resident of Roseville's Sun City homeowners
association, welcomed the new law. But he said it still gives
associations the edge by requiring residents to file lawsuits to see
certain records.
"As an individual homeowner I am not going to sue them. Yes,

A friend of mine is voting for Arnold. He rationalizes it this way. It may be the wrong choice but it’s like eating red meat - bad for you, but hard to resist - and fun.
You have to love California. It's so bloomin’ crazy - and getting more loopy by the year. Think of it - - if at the last minute he decides not to vote for Arnold, he can vote for Gary Coleman, the diminutive black actor, or Gallagher, the watermelon-smashing comedian, or that platinum blonde babe from L.A. with one name and the big phony boobs, or Larry Flynt..... and the list goes on.
If the courts cancel the election, I'm keeping my absentee ballot as a collector's item. One guy actually lists himself as a Used Car Dealer, another as a Custom Denture Manufacturer (I didn't know there was any other kind), another is a Businessman/Prizefighter/Father.
There's an Adult Film Actress, a Railroad Switchman/Brakeman, a Law School President (Channel 2 news featured him on their spotlight segment the other night. He's also a cowboy-boot wearing bounty hunter.), a Fathers' Issues Author, a Tribal Chairman, a Cigarette Retailer, and a Middleweight Sumo Wrestler.
Some of the names are worth a vote in themselves: Abner Zurd, Trek Thunder Kelly, Butch Dole, and Laughing Horse Robinson.
If this is democracy, it's a little frightening.

Thanks for your very complete response. I already had it on my list to go to MOD and you reinforced that. And frankly, I was posting as much for showing what could be done with a bulletin board as to get the information.

OK CORG, you said you would abide by the decision of the court. The
judgement went against you. Is this the end or does Golden Rain have
to keep paying those big bucks for their lawyers while you appeal and
appeal and appeal. Can we just get on with life? Let's save our
money for the fight against the enclosed pool. Rossmoor had to
upgrade Gateway and Dollar Pool. They had become tatty, smelly and
disgraceful. Money well spent. But an enclosed pool? Maybe Lincoln
Hills has a pool but what are their monthly dues?
The problem we are facing in Rossmoor is that the monthly HOA dues
are becoming too high. For co-ops (at least 1/2 of us) not only does
a prospective buyer have to come up with the cash for the equity, but
must meet income requirements (after basic living expenses, i.e.food,
medical, car etc) of 2.5 to 3X the montly dues which, for my Piedmont
Townhouse, are approaching $1000/month. Who wants to come up with
$300K cash to buy a place and still have monthly payments in excess
of $1k. Keeping the montly HOA dues down is essential to keeping
market prices of our units up. An enclosed pool is not necessary.
Many other exercises are available to keep our joints moving freely.
If a pool is necessary for this, use Dollar. It is in the shade
until 9 am every morning. An extra $2-3/month on my payment for this
ammenity which few will use is too much. Co-op property values have
decreased recently. The monthly payment is too high. No on the
enclosed pool
My guy is Graham Smithwick, 945-1641. He did those exasperating final little
jobs to
get my mom's house ready to sell and has done a couple small jobs for me, too.
He's
not a licensed contractor, but shows up when promised and seems to know what
he's
doing--errs on the side of caution, if at all.Charges $25 per hour, or did when
he
worked for me.
As a new resident of Rossmoor I want to commend President Sheldon Solloway, and
the rest of the CORG Board and volunteers for a superbly well organized first
public
meeting of the organization. Each speaker was succinct and on message; all in
all a
wonderful first effort. I was moved to lend some volunteer time to the group
and I
hope others will do the same.

Is Your Rossmoor the best place for non-political chit-chat on the web, or is
there
another bulletin board for those innocent questions that a newcomer to the
community might have? For instance, if I wanted to hear from oldtimers about
finding a reliable installer of Heat Pumps, is this the best place to ask that
question?
Or will Your Rossmoor be skewed to internal politics?
And who is a reliable handyman anyway?
--Jerry Neuman
Walnut Creek police Friday recovered more than $100,000 worth of jewelry at three San Francisco pawn shops that had been stolen from Rossmoor residents in financial elder abuse incidents.
Leonardo Torres was arrested last week on suspicion of three counts of elder abuse, burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property after Walnut Creek police linked him to burglaries in the homes of five elderly Rossmoor residents. Torres was an in-home caretaker, police said.
Maria Atienza, another in-home caretaker, was arrested Wednesday in San Ramon on suspicion of conspiracy and possession of stolen property.
Police said Torres sneaked into occupied residences and stole jewelry and other family heirlooms. Atienza pawned some of the jewelry to get money for Torres, police said.
Most of the stolen items were recovered after police obtained a search warrant in San Francisco on Friday.
Now that Rossmoor is showing movies in the new Peacock Hall, perhaps they can track down a classic old Laurel and Hardy film with this plot (the preposterous nature of which is guaranteed to engender a smile):
L&H are attempting to move a piano along a thin, rickety footbridge that connects two Alpine mountaintops. Swaying precariously in the wind, the bridge is so high up that the view downward is sickening. Approaching L&H on the other side of the dilapidated little footbridge is a gorilla.
