The YBJ listserve is a very valuable tool and here are some tips on how to use the ‘serve responsibly. 1. If you are posting a non-journalism item (my book is coming out, my play is going on, my artist is performing, etc…basically a shameless self promotion) do it only ONCE. Please include full contact information in your original post. If people are interested, they will contact you based on the information you left in your e-mail. 2. "Posting rumors, hoaxes and urban legend e-mails (the forwarded and unsourced e-mails like the recent Kanye West and black heritage stamps types) will not be tolerated. You will be removed from the listserve on the first offense. Please familiarize yourself with http://urbanlegends.about.com/ and http://www.snopes.com. The two sites are the best debunkers of rumors, hoaxes and urban legends. 3. Our family is large and let’s make a strong effort to sign all listserve messages when speaking. Please state your name and affiliation for the record when sending messages to the listserve. 4. If you are a proud user of any of the social networking sites (blogger, myspace, facebook, etc.) then you can copy the exact link to (insert any of the aforementioned websites/journals/blogs) and add it to your signature on your posts to the listserve. People are naturally curious and will click on the links in your listserve postings. 5. Let's not let professionalism escape us on the listserve. This is not a chat room.
