GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: The National Policy Director is a full-time position
(4-5 days per week) that supports the activities of the Partnership for 21st
Century Skills (P21), a leading national non-profit education advocacy
organization, and serves two main roles: 1) To assess, develop, and recommend to
the Executive Board and Strategic Council policy positions that incorporate a
focus on 21st Century skills into existing laws and emerging policy,
legislative, and regulatory initiatives at the national level (primarily
federal, secondarily state), and 2) To develop an increasingly improving
relationship with the new federal administration. This position reports to the
President and is responsible for various high level project management and
policy functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Identify key national issues and trends impacting U.S. K-12 education, assess
the extent to which they incorporate a focus on 21st Century skills, and
prioritize which are most important and relevant to P21;
• Develop a robust dialogue with the White House staff on 21st century skills;
• Develop a robust dialogue with the Secretary of Education and the staff at the
Department of Education on 21st century skills;
• Support the P21 National Policy Task Force;
• Meet with federal policymakers and education stakeholders to educate them
about P21;
• Draft specific policy recommendations as appropriate and develop one-pagers,
position briefs, white papers, talking points, reports, etc., to help advance
these recommendations;
• Assist with P21 outreach strategies to increase the understanding of and
support for 21st century skills among policy-makers, policy-related
organizations, and influential thought leaders;
• Assist the P21 Executive Board and staff in responding to inquiries and
requests from national policymakers;
• Educate policymakers on the role of 21st Century Skills in ESEA
Reauthorization;
• Meet with federal policymakers to support State Partner efforts to apply for
"Race to the Top" funds;
• Monitor, and when appropriate, participate in critical national dialogues such
as the national voluntary standards discussions;
• Engage in broader outreach to national groups who can include 21st century
skills in their national policy agendas;
• Support grassroots efforts in P21 Partner States in collaboration with the
Director of State Initiatives;
• Provide leadership and direction in moving the mission of the organization
forward;
• With direction from the Strategic Dimension Leads, ensure the on-time
completion of deliverables as outlined in the strategic plan;
• Communicate and coordinate with the PR team;
• Support the President as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree
• Extensive experience working with federal and state policymakers
• Deep knowledge of legislative processes and the Congress
• Strong knowledge of K-12 education
• Expertise on Department of Education
• Knowledge of national education groups operating in Washington D.C.
• Excellent communications skills
