have managed to dig up all the source files and wonder if its worth me doing an
update for the 21st century? Or would i be wasting my time because of the
overall decline in packet activity? I have been out of the Ham radio world for a
long time now and have basically lost the plot he he. However i am still
licensed and still have a huge passion for radio as i work for Motorola Service
Centre in the UK.

Hi Ian
I am one of the later people to join the group. I have loaded Xparm onto
Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and it appears to function OK. I haven't really
tried it out as packet is a bit sparse in SW Scotland. I was hoping it
had a serial terminal built in like Winpack so that I could "talk" to my
TNCs but I cannot find one. I tried to load Linpac but that was a failure!
If you were going to do anything to Xparm it would be to include some of
the options Winpack provides. I realise this is a big task and the
interest for many has gone elsewhere. I am a retired
electrical/electronic engineer and have programmed in Fortran and Basic
in the past but I think for me it would be a big uphill task to offer to
program, I am still getting to grips with Linux. The trouble is I get
involved in too many tasks like running the courses for the local radio
club in Stranraer, just finished writing a book for the RSGB and now
need to put eqpt together for an APRS and packet node.
I am just trying to get an interest in Packet going here in SW Scotland
and have just got my NoVs for a packet and APRS Node (GB7UQ and MB7UQ)
on Cambret Hill. We do have a node at GB7WD some 2000ft asl! I have just
programmed some ancient Motorola Micros and M110s to use at my node site
which is 360m asl.
One question I maybe shouldn't ask but will. What is the basic data in
the EEPROMs in the Motorola micro (ie before channel frequencies). Is it
a set serial number or what? I bought some new 24C01s to use because of
invalid checksum errors etc but can't even start the process. Don't feel
you have to answer this as it may be commercially sensitive.
I wish you well coming back into the hobby and hope you bring back some
of the expertise we are sadly lacking these days. I would be interested
to see if you have any other responses from possible Xparm users.
