.20 Gauge Colonial Fowler with Hunting Pouch, Horn, & Accessories
For Sale - $2000.00
This Colonial American Fowler is a Lancaster county Pennsylvania Style fowling
piece from the 1760-1780 period and was created by master gunsmith Brad Emig of
Cabin Creek Muzzleloading. It is based largely on a surviving example believed
to have been made by John Newcomer in, Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County. One of
the most unique and pleasing features of the American Fowler is the resulting
overall architecture that occurs from the blending of the Germanic and English
traditions of gun making. This cultural blending products a hybrid fowling piece
that is slender and graceful yet also exhibits the strong and sturdy
construction of the Germanic gun making tradition.
This is a completely hand made gun that features a presentation curly maple
stock, skelp-welded, hand-forged, wrought iron barrel and a hand forged lock.
All of the mountings were made by hand in the gunsmith shop. Every bolt, screw,
etc. is hand made utilizing traditional gunsmithing techniques. The gun took
almost a year to construct. I have had the gun for three years and it shoots
great. A new identical gun from Brad today would cost $2500.00 without any
accessories. All of the accessories would cost to replace more than $600.00.
Photographs are available of both the fowler and accessories upon request.

Dear Friends and Fellow Historians,
Please pardon the cross-posting.
I am writing this after thinking about a discussion on one of the other groups
to which I subscribe [Revlist] bemoaning the fact that Civil War battlefields
enjoy a preservation effort, led by the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT), and
a federally-funded grant program administered by the National Park Service's
(NPS) American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), the likes of which are
unknown for battlefields of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812; or for that
matter, the French and Indian War as well.
After thinking about my response to that thread, I realized that I should expand
and share this information with others whose interest includes the study of
these historic conflicts as well. I, for one, am tired of listening to the
complaints along these lines.
Before proceeding, I would like to mention that most of my charitable
contributions every year, outside of those to the religious-based charities I
support, go to historic preservation efforts - to let you know that I put my
money where my mouth is.
At present, there is NO program for Revolutionary War battlefield preservation
on a par like the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT). The CWPT has been around
a good while, started small (actually two small organizations that merged and
grew into the 800 pound gorilla of the historic preservation community), and did
much ground work, and raised a lot of money, to lobby Congress and push for this
legislation - and they continue to do so. They now have pretty deep pockets.
And yes, I was a member of both the Association for the Preservation of Civil
War Sites (APCWS) and Civil War Trust (CWT) before they merged, and keep my CWPT
membership current; although my personal research interest/ focus is the
Colonial-Revolutionary-Early Republic eras, with emphasis on the American War
for Indeppendence, however.
It should also be noted that the grants mentioned in the news release cited are
for land acquisition projects only. State, certified local and tribal
governments, and private non-profit organizations in conjunction with land-trust
organizations, which receive the grants must match them dollar for dollar. The
CWPT, in many cases, assists these groups by raising the necessary matching
funds. We are talking real estate, so you know that is not cheap.
There was legislation initiated to do the same for battlefields of the
Revolutionary War and War of 1812, sponsored by Representative Holt, but I am
not sure of its status at present. Bear in mind, however, if passed, it will
also be an acquisition grant program that requires dollar for dollar matching
funds, and there is no Revolutionary War or War of 1812 counterpart to the CWPT
that can currently raise adequate funds nationally. If passed, until
a CWPT-like organization is up and running on the same scale, and has built a
sizable bank account, those receiving the acquisition grants will be required
to raise the money themselves, or convince their state, local, or tribal
governments to appropriate it from tax revenue or by other legislative means -
like borrowing - which I say is unlikely for the foreseeable future.
When I was with the ABPP, I often heard Mr Jim Lightheizer of the CWPT say he
would offer advice to helping a similar Revolutionary War organization get
started.
Marv Ninneman started a nascent CWPT-like organizations for Revolutionary War
and War of 1812 battlefields called the Preservation Society for the American
Revolution (PSAR), about two years ago. He began with "seed money" from a
battlefield preservation grant from the ABPP. It is still in its formative
stages.

Hello,
I am presently researching the role of Regimental Surgeon, in order to begin an
impression of the 2nd Massachusetts surgeon, Dr. John Hart, for the 2010 season.
Is anyone out there currently active doing an impression in this area that I
could work with, or has informaiton I could use/follow.
I have been researching this for about 4 weeks now, and I have a pretty good
handle on the particulars of the role (medicines, diseases, surgical practices,
hospital/camp stuff, etc...). However, as we all know in this hobby, we are
always learning and discovering new things. As such, I was hoping to both share
my findings and perhaps discuss this aspect of reenacting with others in this
area.
Thanks.
I remain, your most humble servant,
Brian Cortez
(aka. Dr. John Hart, Regimental Surgeon, 2nd Massachusetts Regiment of the
Continental Line)

> Norwich - Hannah Arnold has a secret admirer, and the Norwich Historical
Society has a mystery.
>
> A few days ago, observed by a jogger, a man wearing historical clothing and a
mask approached the grave of Benedict Arnold's mother in the Norwichtown
Cemetery. He placed two bouquets of flowers and a single red rose at the base of
the stone. He anchored a hand-written note by a candle.
>
> Nearby, at the base of a modern plaque erected by the Norwich Historical
Society identifying Hannah Arnold's grave, the man placed a hand trowel and a
single red carnation.
>
> "A mother's heart is first in joy. A mother's heart is first to break. Rest in
peace good lady. You are remembered again," the neatly written note said.
>
> The note was written on an approximately 3-by-4-inch piece of paper. On the
back was a portion of a typed letter addressed to Bill Stanley, founding and
former president of the Norwich Historical Society and well known advocate of
Benedict Arnold's role in the American Revolution. Much of the letter is cut
off, but it starts with the writer thanking Stanley for his hard work to keep
Norwich history in the forefront. The last section visible partially reads:
>
> "To mark these occasions … I will lea … grave of an important but overlook …"
>
> Stanley said Monday he does not recall receiving any such letter, but has
heard that an unidentified man visits Hannah Arnold's grave a few times a year
and leaves flowers. On July 4, someone leaves a small 13-starred flag at the
grave.
>
> Stanley said he receives phone calls and letters from people from all over the
country who are curious about Arnold or who want to recognize his heroic deeds
in the American Revolution prior to his infamous treason.
>
> Even after her son's treason, Hannah Arnold remained a highly respected
Norwich citizen, according to historical accounts and her own epitaph. The
inscription on the 1758 stone has long since faded. The Historical Society
plaque, however, has repeated the words.
>
> "She was a Pattern of Piety, Patience and Virtue," the bottom of the stone
reads. "Who died Aug. 15, 1758."
>
> So the flowers do not mark the anniversary of her death. Her birthday is not
listed. Benedict Arnold was born Jan. 3, 1741.
>
> Current Norwich Historical Society President William Champagne visited the
grave Monday afternoon to view the tribute. He too was puzzled about its origin.
>
> The trowel apparently represents Benedict Arnold's membership in the
Freemasons in New Haven, where he had opened a druggist shop before the
Revolutionary War, so perhaps the man is a Mason.
>
> "These people who leave flowers," Stanley said. "They are always respectful."

Dear Members,
There is a gentleman that invited me to join grouply yesterday (Glenn
?) from a F & I War disscusion forum group. Please beware and whatever you do,
don't join! I fell for it because their was a good friend (not this Glenn
person) that I have known for a long time on grouply who is also a fellow long
time re-enactor. I got home after
being away for only a few hours and my yahoo e-mail was littered with e-mail
messages. Invitations to join were sent out that I DID NOT AUTHORIZE.
Apparently, Grouply can access all of your yahoo & google information. They can
also change your e-mail addy listed in your yahoo groups. If anyone else has
gotten this information, please do what I did. You can get out of grouply in
four easy steps. I am also e-mailing my other yahoo groups to let them know that
I have taken the necessary pre-cautions. All yahoo groups have been disconnected
from grouply and the grouply account deleted. I hope no one else has been
affected. It was also affecting my e-mails that I was trying to send to other
people (alot of mailer-demon failure notices)
Sincerely,
Christine Albin

At The Grave Of Benedict Arnold's Mother, A Mystery Blooms
Secret admirer leaves flowers for Norwich woman who remained respected despite
her son's historic treason
Norwich - Hannah Arnold has a secret admirer, and the Norwich Historical Society
has a mystery.
Nearby, at the base of a modern plaque erected by the Norwich Historical Society
identifying Hannah Arnold's grave, the man placed a hand trowel and a single red
carnation.
"A mother's heart is first in joy. A mother's heart is first to break. Rest in
peace good lady. You are remembered again," the neatly written note said.
The note was written on an approximately 3-by-4-inch piece of paper. On the back
was a portion of a typed letter addressed to Bill Stanley, founding and former
president of the Norwich Historical Society and well known advocate of Benedict
Arnold's role in the American Revolution. Much of the letter is cut off, but it
starts with the writer thanking Stanley for his hard work to keep Norwich
history in the forefront. The last section visible partially reads:
"To mark these occasions … I will lea … grave of an important but overlook …"
Stanley said Monday he does not recall receiving any such letter, but has heard
that an unidentified man visits Hannah Arnold's grave a few times a year and
leaves flowers. On July 4, someone leaves a small 13-starred flag at the grave.
Stanley said he receives phone calls and letters from people from all over the
country who are curious about Arnold or who want to recognize his heroic deeds
in the American Revolution prior to his infamous treason.
Even after her son's treason, Hannah Arnold remained a highly respected Norwich
citizen, according to historical accounts and her own epitaph. The inscription
on the 1758 stone has long since faded. The Historical Society plaque, however,
has repeated the words.
"She was a Pattern of Piety, Patience and Virtue," the bottom of the stone
reads. "Who died Aug. 15, 1758."
So the flowers do not mark the anniversary of her death. Her birthday is not
listed. Benedict Arnold was born Jan. 3, 1741.
Current Norwich Historical Society President William Champagne visited the grave
Monday afternoon to view the tribute. He too was puzzled about its origin.
The trowel apparently represents Benedict Arnold's membership in the Freemasons
in New Haven, where he had opened a druggist shop before the Revolutionary War,
so perhaps the man is a Mason.
"These people who leave flowers," Stanley said. "They are always respectful."
Hello again everyone. Still doing my research on my book. At first I
was going to do historical, but then I just decided to do Historical
Fiction. I figured that would be easier to do for me. Anyways to the
point. In my book I will be starting off with the siege of Fort Laurens
and then going into Crawford's Expedition later in the book. Right now
I am doing research on some of the units involved with Fort Laurens, so
far I have for Continental units, the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment under
Colonel John Gibson, 13th Virginia Regiment under Colonel William
Russell and the North Carolina Light Dragoons. My research states they,
the NC Light Dragoons weren't exactly at Fort Laurens during the
necessary Siege, but apart of the reliefe force under General Lahclan
McIntosh which arrived at Fort Laurens on March 23rd 1778. What I need
to know who was in command and how many companies were apart of the
Fort Pitt garrison. So far the only information is that a Captain
Benjamin Mills commanded a company of NC Light Dragoons under General
McIntosh. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You can email
me at chaddvail@...

Hey all...be warned do NOT confuse "Royalist Arms" with the Loyalist Arms
company from Canada. Notice these guys are not even using a commercial website
but are using an ad driven "freehosting. net" site, and that doesn't even work
