Dear Friends and Fellow Historians,

Please pardon the cross-posting.

I am writing this after thinking about a discussion on one of the other groups
to which I subscribe [Revlist] bemoaning the fact that Civil War battlefields
enjoy a preservation effort, led by the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT), and
a federally-funded grant program administered by the National Park Service's
(NPS) American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), the likes of which are
unknown for battlefields of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812; or for that
matter, the French and Indian War as well.

After thinking about my response to that thread, I realized that I should expand
and share this information with others whose interest includes the study of
these historic conflicts as well.  I, for one, am tired of listening to the
complaints along these lines.

Before proceeding, I would like to mention that most of my charitable
contributions every year, outside of those to the religious-based charities I
support, go to historic preservation efforts - to let you know that I put my
money where my mouth is.

At present, there is NO program for Revolutionary War battlefield preservation
on a par like the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT).  The CWPT has been around
a good while, started small (actually two small organizations that merged and
grew into the 800 pound gorilla of the historic preservation community), and did
much ground work, and raised a lot of money, to lobby Congress and push for this
legislation - and they continue to do so.  They now have pretty deep pockets.
And yes, I was a member of both the Association for the Preservation of Civil
War Sites (APCWS) and Civil War Trust (CWT) before they merged, and keep my CWPT
membership current; although my personal research interest/ focus is the
Colonial-Revolutionary-Early Republic eras, with emphasis on the American War
for Indeppendence, however.

It should also be noted that the grants mentioned in the news release cited are
for land acquisition projects only.  State, certified local and tribal
governments, and private non-profit organizations in conjunction with land-trust
organizations, which receive the grants must match them dollar for dollar.  The
CWPT, in many cases, assists these groups by raising the necessary matching
funds.  We are talking real estate, so you know that is not cheap.

There was legislation initiated to do the same for battlefields of the
Revolutionary War and War of 1812, sponsored by Representative Holt, but I am
not sure of its status at present.  Bear in mind, however, if passed, it will
also be an acquisition grant program that requires dollar for dollar matching
funds, and there is no Revolutionary War or War of 1812 counterpart to the CWPT
that can currently raise adequate funds nationally.  If passed, until
a CWPT-like organization is up and running on the same scale, and has built a
sizable bank account, those  receiving the acquisition grants will be required
to raise the money themselves, or convince their state, local, or tribal
governments to appropriate it from tax revenue or by other legislative means -
like borrowing - which I say is unlikely for the foreseeable future.

When I was with the ABPP, I often heard Mr Jim Lightheizer of the CWPT say he
would offer advice to helping a similar Revolutionary War organization  get
started.

Marv Ninneman started a nascent CWPT-like organizations for Revolutionary War
and War of 1812 battlefields called the Preservation Society for the American
Revolution (PSAR), about two years ago.  He began with "seed money" from a
battlefield preservation grant from the ABPP.  It is still in its formative
stages.

HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING BESIDE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LACK OF
PRESERVATION EFFORTS FOR REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND WAR OF 1812 BATTLEFIELDS!

Do what you can to start help making PSAR as powerful as CWPT!  If the Civil War
guys can do it, why can't we?  Pass this information on to like-minded groups,
like your reenactment/ living history organizations, any friends or relatives
you may have in the Sons and/ or Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of
the Revolution, Society for the War of 1812, Society of Colonial Wars, local
historical societies, Revolutioary War Round Tables, etc.

Best Regards,

Glenn

David, together with his wife Ginger, specializes in researching, recording, and
performing early American music. Since 1980 the two have presented concerts and
educational programs throughout the country for museums, historical societies,
public schools, and universities. Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution, the
National Archives, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Styriarte Festival (in Graz,
Austria) are among their past sponsors. David holds a Ph.D. from The Catholic
University of America, and he earned his Master's at George Washington
University and Bachelor's at Dickinson College. He consults and lectures widely
in addition to finishing a book on music in Maryland for the Johns Hopkins
University Press. Each spring David teaches a graduate course on the early
history of American music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

The Hildebrands provided soundtrack materials and served as period music
consultants for several PBS broadcasts, including the six-part series Liberty!
– the American Revolution, and the one-hour specials Jefferson: A View from
the Mountain and Rediscovering George Washington.

David and Ginger have issued six full-length recordings, most notably George
Washington: Music for the First President (1998) and Music in the Life of
Benjamin Franklin (2006), copies of which will be available for purchase the
evening of November 4th. In 1999, together with dance historians Kate van Winkle
and Robert Keller, the Hildebrands founded The Colonial Music Institute.

The speaker invites prospective attendees to explore the "RESOURCES" section of
the The Colonial Music Instituter's website at www.colonialmusic. org in advance
of this presentation, wherein one can read essays and FAQs on such topics as
Capt. George Bush's musical activities and the probable myth of the World Turned
Upside Down.

Does anyone have some suggested sources regarding the TOE of Hessian
units during the American Revolutionary War? Also, does anyone have
similar information regarding the ranks and insignia of officers and
enlisted men of these Hessian troops?

Thank you,

Wow. I don't really know how this argument began, but I don't need to read that
kind of language in my email. It IS wrong to pirate photos, if that is one of
the issues at hand here, and it is just as wrong to violate the guidelines of
Yahoogroups when posting. One of which prohibits such profanity. Is there a
moderator for this group? He or she needs to be more diligent in the future, I
would say.

Hello
I am newer to the list. I usually just read and learn from everyone.
So moderator and list please forgive if this is against list rules

However after reading older postings concerning Jason Coffin from the
Royalist Arms & Repair Company. I am wondering if anyone has
actually done business with him or the company. I have been emailing
him concerning a musket, and have been given a resonable price. I
have yet to send the check but do have an address. Since like alot
of people money now is real tight, I can't afford to make a bad
choice or pass up a good deal either. So please email me with all
good and bad dealings.

On the same lines I am looking for a new or used musket for a gift
for my husband. He reenacts 1778 militia. If anyone has a resonable
priced reproduction to sell please let me know.

Thanks for all thoughts and again sorry if it is against list rules.
Amy

Amy,

Don't buy from this charlatan, he is posting pics from Loyalist Arms &
Middlesex Village Traders sites. Both of those companies are reputable
dealers in reproductions of Flintlock guns. This Jason's prices are
way too low, I doubt you could even import these from India at those
prices.
It's a rip off, run don't walk away.

Instead, check out

Dear Friends and Fellow Historians,

Please pardon the cross-posting.

The library of the Society of the Cincinnati is an excellent, if not well-known,
resource for researching the military and naval history of the
Colonial-Revolutionary-Early Republic eras of our nation’s history.  An
impressive collection of contemporary manuals and treatises on the art of war
and military science provide the centerpiece of their impressive holdings.

The Society of the Cincinnati is accepting applications for the Tyree-Lamb
Research Fellowship.  Named in honor of two members of the Society of the
Cincinnati in the State of Virginia, Lewis Tyree, Jr., and John K. Lamont Lamb,
it provides $1,000 to support the cost of travel, housing, and per diem for a
scholar wishing to use the Society’s library for a period of at least five
days.  The fellowship is open to graduate students and other scholars who are
conducting research that may benefit from the library’s holdings.

The Society of the Cincinnati library collection includes contemporary books,
manuscripts, maps, and works of art which support the in-depth study of
18th-century naval and military history and the art of war during that period.
The library also houses books and archives related to the formation and history
of the Society of the Cincinnati, as well as materials related to the lives of
Lars and Isabel Anderson, whose Gilded Age home now serves as a museum, and the
headquarters of the Society.

The recipient is required to complete his or her fellowship research within a
period of one year from the date of award.  Further, the recipient will be
required to submit a three-to-five-page written report and summary of research
findings, which may be published in the Society’s journal, Cincinnati
Fourteen.  In addition, the library requests a single copy of any subsequent
publication (article, thesis, dissertation, or book) that may result.

Applicants should submit the following:
1-    A curriculum vitae, including educational background, publications and
professional experience.
2-    A brief outline of the research proposed (not to exceed two pages).
3-    (For current graduate students only) Two confidential, sealed letters
of recommendation from faculty or colleagues familiar with the applicant and his
or her research project.  Note: If letters are to be mailed independently,
please include the names of the recommenders when submitting the application.

Applications must be received by November 16, 2009.  Applicants will be
notified by January 15, 2010.

Dear Friends and Fellow Historians,

(Pardon the cross-posting).

Join us as we begin our 2009-2010 season of the American Revolution Round Table
of the District of Columbia on Wednesday, 2 September.

The 2 September 2009 program will be presented by Dr. Nancy Loane, historian and
author of the recently published book Following the Drum: Women at the Valley
Forge Encampment (April 2009). Her presentation will reflect upon her
observations derived from her research.

More than 400 women — and some exceptional ladies — were encamped at Valley
Forge during the winter of 1777-78. Much has been written about the Valley Forge
winter and of Washington's fortitude there, of the remarkable remodeling of the
Continental Army during the winter of 1777-78, and of the suffering of the
soldiers. But little has been said about the women of, and with, the Army. Who
were they? What did they do at Valley Forge?

Dr. Loane describes her presentation as "a cordial invitation to come and hear
about the women — and ladies — of the Valley Forge encampment. Meet the
officers' wives who traveled hundreds of miles from their comfortable homes to
be with their husbands. Meet the wives and mothers of the enlisted soldiers and
volunteers and the women who traveled with Washington's military family. As
difficult as it is to believe, some of these women followed the army because
they had nowhere else to go. The stories of the women in the areas surrounding
the camp will surprise you, too. Through this presentation, you may learn about
a Valley Forge that you probably did not know even existed." The speaker will
have available for sale, and to autograph, copies of her book — at the cost
of $25.00 — $5.00 off list price!.

In the past few years, Dr. Loane presented over 100 lectures in four states
about the women at the Valley Forge encampment, the letters of the men from
camp, and Martha Washington. She was a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Speaker for the
2006-2007, has appeared on two documentaries about the Valley Forge encampment,
and has published four articles about the women at camp. She focuses on primary
research, and has studied more than five hundred diaries, journals, letters,
returns, orderly books, records, books and periodicals of the Revolutionary War
period. She is a Founding member of the American Revolution Round Table of
Philadelphia, a former seasonal Park Ranger at Valley Forge National Historical
Park, and a former Associate Professor, Miami-Dade College (Florida).

Time schedule is as follows:

From 6:00 to 6:45 PM, there will be a social hour as members and guests gather
in the Campaign Room.  Cash-bar is available until dinner starts.

A sit-down dinner follows at 7:00 PM.  Cost of the dinner is $30.00 per
person.

Although welcome to do so, non-member guests are not required to participate in
the dinner, and may delay their arrival until the start of the evening's
program.

Dinner is followed by brief announcements and/ or membership business.

The speaking presentation begins at 8:00, and ends at approximately 9:00 PM.

Hi
I guide at two old houses. One has rev war roots. I am researching the military
history of one of the family. Family story has him at Moore's Creek, Kings
Moutain, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse. I have him at Moore's Creek and
Camden, have on duty escorting prisoners after Kings Moutain and Cowpens, Do not
belive he was on the battle fields of Kings Moutain, Cowpens, or Guilford
Courthose. But belive he was on milita duty at these times. So I hope to use yor
knowledge to lock down who, what, where.

We in Kalamazoo, Michigan are looking to have a tea party on the forth of July.
We're hoping to have a family event with founding values at the center of the
event. I've been thinking that it would be a great educational experience to
have some reenactors who can portray our founding Fathers.
If you can give advice on how to go about this or direct us to people who can
help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You For Keeping Our Founding Alive.
