I am presently taking an on-line course to obtain my Library specialist
qualification. One of our assignments is to find a listserve to monitor and
take part in for the duration of the course. Much of my position as a
teacher-librarian in a secondary school is related to computers and the
Internet. WWWEDU appears to be a service that I feel will be valuable
resource for me.

WWWEDU FAQ:
Frequently Asked Questions
Last Update: October 11, 2001
The WWWEDU FAQ is posted at least once a month to WWWEDU. If you
have never read the WWWEDU FAQ before or are planning to post a message
for the first time, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! And because the FAQ contains
information regarding list policies, I would strongly urge you to save a copy
for
future reference.
The most recent version is available on the Web at
http://www.edwebproject.org/wwwedu.faq.html.
The purpose of this FAQ is to answer some of the most common questions
asked on this group, and to refer people left with unanswered questions to
available sources of additional help.
Submissions, comments, etcetera are welcomed, and should be sent to Andy
Carvin at acarvin@.... Comments posted to the WWWEDU list
should have a subject header containing "WWWEDU FAQ" so that Andy
notices them as quickly as possible :-). Received materials will be considered
in
the public domain and subject to editing unless specific text to the contrary
accompanies the message (which may render the submission unusable).

Section 1: General Questions
1.1 What is WWWEDU?
WWWEDU (The World Wide Web in Education List) is moderated list
coordinated by Andy Carvin at the Benton Foundation. The purpose of
WWWEDU is to offer educators, students, webmasters, policy makers,
parents, and Internet users in general a continuous discussion on the
role of World Wide Web use in education. The Web is an ideal
environment for teaching students of all ages. A well-conceived Web
site can inspire creativity and interactivity, yet it is still too new of
an
environment for us to completely grasp its potential. What are teachers
and students doing with the Web today? How can the structure of the
Web positively affect learning and assessment? What else can be done
to expand the Web's role in education? And how can we encourage
non-Web using schools and educators to take advantage of this new
tool? WWWEDU will hopefully provide a forum for these questions
and others as they come up.
WWWEDU is targeted for use by educators, students, parents and
webmasters, but anyone with a keen interest in the use of the Web in
education is welcome to join. Discussion is moderated, but anyone may
jump in at any time to begin a new topic. Standard netiquette and
courtesy apply at all times, and flaming will not be tolerated.
WWWEDU's home page can be found at
http://www.edwebproject.org/wwwedu.html.
1.2 What are the guidelines for posting WWWEDU?
Because WWWEDU is a moderated group, all posts that are submitted
to the list must be approved by Andy Carvin before they can be
distributed to the entire subscribership. All posts must be in plain text
(sometimes called ascii text), in order for all members of the list to be
able to read them. _Never_ post an attachment or anything coded in
HTML, for these messages will seriously mess up digests of the list. If
you're going to post to the list, be sure to check that your email
software is set up to send messages as plain text or ascii rather than
HTML or MIME-encoded. If necessary, make the change in your
software's preferences before you post a message.
In general, the following subjects (and any related issues) are
considered fair game:
The use of the web in education
Expanding web access and publishing into the classroom
Announcements of free educational web resources
Promotion of easy access to the web for all levels of education
Educational web site reviews
Educational interactivity in web environments (MOO's, chat
rooms, etc.)
Politics and policies that may affect web use in education
Web-related grants, projects, contests, and other opportunities
ancillary web issues such as Acceptable Use Policies,
student-teacher publishing rights, etc.
In contrast, the following subjects are considered inappropriate and
may be rejected for publication:
General questions on education
General questions on non-Internet media technologies (cd-roms,
video, etc)
Private posts to members of the group
For-profit advertisements of any type whatsoever
Requests for Greetings (such as "please send a message to my
class and tell them where you are!")
Administrative questions (post these directly to
acarvin@...)
Computer virus warnings (see below)
Most of the above examples are straightforward, but I'd like to explain
the virus warning ban. Every now and then you may receive an email
from someone warning you about some new computer virus,
encouraging you to spread the word. In 99.9% of all cases, these
messages are _hoaxes_. The virus itself doesn't exist; rather, the
hundreds of thousands of emails generated by people spreading the
word about it is the actual virus, taking up precious Internet bandwidth.
If you are determined to post a warning, though, please check the Virus
Warning website at http://www.kumite.com/myths to confirm or debunk
the virus' existence.
Sometimes, the occasional off-topic message will be allowed if the
subject is clearly of interest to the WWWEDU community. But in
general, the reason for disallowing these subjects is simply that there
are often more appropriate forums for them elsewhere on the Net, and
because the vast majority of WWWEDU subscribers subscribe to more
than one discussion list, they would be bombarded with redundancies.
For example, if you have a general question related to technology
policy, I would highly recommend you post it to the EDTECH list at
edtech@.... For a comprehensive list of other
educational/technology lists, please visit
http://www.edwebproject.org/lists.html.
As for the rule for not allowing "requests for greetings," invariably they
clog up the discussion because people will cc-post their responses to
the group, and not directly to the original person. As noted before,
flaming, rudeness and commercial advertisements will not be tolerated.
If you are unable to follow these rules, you will be removed from the
list.
When posting a message to the list, be sure to consider the following:
Write clear and meaningful titles. If you're going to post an email to
the list, the title of your message should be clear enough to convey the
purpose of that message. For example, if I have a question regarding
elementary school students accessing the Web, I shouldn't title the
message as "Question" or "Help." A much clearer title would be
something like "Web Access in K-6?" or "Using the Web in
Elementary." Or, if you're going to post your first message to the list,
you might want to say "Introduction: Bill Gates," assuming your name
was Bill Gates, of course. Clear message titles are important because
many WWWEDU subscribers received hundreds of emails a day, so if
you want to be sure your message gets a close look, your title should
be clear and should stand out.
Don't post huge messages. You should always say what you want to
say, but don't post messages that drag on for pages unless you've got
a really good reason for it. Long messages are slower to process and
can cause bottlenecks in the listserver. So if you want to announce that
you've got a call for registration for a conference, post a summary and
let us know how to get a copy of it, instead of posting the entire
conference program.
Responding to another message: private vs. public posting. Ideally,
when a person posts a message to the list, we all like to see responses
posted as well, assuming the original poster hasn't requested that the
responses be private. When you respond to a message, the mailing list
system is set up in such a way that your response will go automatically
back to WWWEDU and not the original author - please be aware of
that when you compose your message. And whenever possible, trim
the size of the original message - there's no reason to repost the entire
original, since we've all seen it before. Instead, include the highlights
and key points to which you're responding. And NEVER respond with
an entire daily digest of messages tacked to the bottom of the message
- emails that large will never be posted due to size constraints. There's
also no need to respond with a post that says "Yes, I agree," or "me
too" and nothing else. If you're going to post a message, make sure that
message is adding to the conversation. :-)
Sign your messages! All posts to WWWEDU must be signed with
your name and email address, and preferably your location and what
you do. Be sure to say exactly where you are - for example, if I signed
my messages Andy Carvin, Cook Middle School, no one will be able to
tell if I'm in Arkansas, Australia or anywhere else. Anonymous postings
to lists in general is considered rather impolite and won't be posted.
Besides, it can make it very difficult for people to respond to you
privately.
Posting regular project updates. If you're like me and you like to post
updates about your particular website or project on a regular basis,
don't bombard us with an overabundance of messages. If your site is
dynamic enough to merit a posted update ever week or two, than feel
free to do it. But if you want to post a message every week just to
reannounce your site, even if there aren't substantial changes to the
site, please hold off and wait til there's something new to announce.
Never post attachments of any kind!Attachments are the scourge of
listservs everywhere because they can't be processed by every email
reader. While it may seem nice to attach a picture, a business card or a
Word file to your messages sometimes, this means that hundreds of
subscribers will get your attachment as pages of garbage data. Under
no circumstances can attachments be posted to the list.
1.3 What does WWWEDU have to do with The EdWeb Project?
The relationship between EdWeb and WWWEDU is a bit nebulous.
Both are maintained by Andy Carvin, and the WWWEDU home page is
hosted on EdWeb. Beyond that, they tend to follow different paths.
EdWeb focuses strictly on K-12 education, reform, and
telecommunications policy, and all of the content is written and/or
edited by Andy. WWWEDU, on the other hand, does not focus
specifically on K-12 (though it is certainly an important component of
it). Discussion spans all aspects of education, from kindergarten to
adult learning, and is tied together by their involvement on the World
Wide Web.
1.4 Who the heck is Andy Carvin anyway?
Andy Carvin (acarvin@..., 202-454-5627), moderator of
WWWEDU, is Senior Associate for the Benton Foundation in
Washington DC. Andy is the editor of the Digital Divide Network
(http://www.DigitalDivideNetwork.org), a national coalition of high tech
corporations and nonprofit foundations working to find solutions to
the digital divide. Andy and his writings have appeared in numerous
publications, including the New York Times, Harvard Educational
Review, Education Week, the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, the
Village Voice, Esther Dyson's Release 1.0, Web Review, and the second
edition of The Internet Unleashed, published by Sams/MacMillan.
Andy was named in 1999 by eSchoolNews magazine as a member of the
Impact 30, an annual list highlighting 30 of the most influencial people
in education technology today. He is a member of the Board of
Directors for the Asia/Pacific Center for Justice and Peace, a consortium
of NGOs that promotes democracy, free speech and freedom of religion
across Asia. He also serves on the Board of the Consortium for School
Networking (CoSN), which advocates policies regarding the role of
information technology in schools. He previously served as New Media
Program Officer for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, where he
developed Internet-related grant programs for the public broadcasting
community.
Andy holds a bachelor of science in rhetoric and religion and a master
of arts in telecommunications from Northwestern University, where he
received the prestigious Annenberg/Washington Graduate Fellowship.
While living in Illinois, he was co-founder and editor-in-chief of the
Chicago area arts weekly, Art+Performance magazine. In his free time,
Andy has traveled extensively around the world and has written about
his adventures in popular online travelogues. In January 1999, Andy
premiered From Sideshow to Genocide: Stories of the Cambodian
Holocaust (http://www.edwebproject.org/sideshow), a historical
collection of accounts from survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime. Most
recently Andy published Anatolian Fortnight
(http://www.edwebproject.org/anatolia), detailing his September 1999
trip from Istanbul to Mount Ararat.
1.5 How do I subscribe to WWWEDU?
To join WWWEDU, send a message to
wwwedu-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You will then be added to the
WWWEDU list.
When you first join WWWEDU, please post an introduction of
yourself to the group, and feel free to suggest any discussion topics.
You may post at any time by sending a message to
wwwedu@yahoogroups.com.
1.6 Is a daily digest available?
Because WWWEDU can be a high-volume list at times, you can elect
to receive the its postings in one large chunk each day. This is the best
way to avoid information overload for many people, but it can also slow
down one's involvement in the discussion. To receive the digest, visit
the WWWEDU list management site at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu and click on the "edit my
membership" button on the right-hand side. Here you'll be able to
switch your membership setting to digest format. If you ever need to
switch it back, return to this same page and you'll be able to re-adjust
your settings.
1.7 How do I unsubscribe from WWWEDU?
To unsubscribe, send a message to
wwwedu-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com. You'll then be removed from
the list.
If you experience any problems with the list, please contact Andy
Carvin directly at acarvin@..., and no matter what, DO NOT
post unsubscribe requests to the entire list.
1.8 Where is the WWWEDU archive, and is it searchable?
You can access a hypermail archive of all posts from June of 1995 to the
present at http://majordomo.wested.org/hyper-discussions/wwwedu.
Messages are archived in year-by-year folders.
If you want to perform a search of the entire archive, visit
http://majordomo.wested.org/hyper-discussions/wwwedu.html. Both
the archive and the search engine can also be accessed through the
WWWEDU homepage at
http://www.edwebproject.org/wwwedu.archive.html.
Hi folks,
I want to share this insightful message from David Thornburg. May his
thoughts resonate widely, and deeply.
Ferdi
From: "DThornburg@..." <DThornburg@...>
An open letter to enemies of democracy:
In the wake of 911 you saw a nation united in grief. Now that we
have launched into responses to the actions of that day, you will
have the chance to see how true patriots behave. You will see
dissent. You will see some who feel our present course of action is
correct, some who feel it is not strong enough, and still others who
feel it is misguided. All of these points of view reflect an
exercise of our rights -- the rights of people living in a
self-governed system -- rights guaranteeing our freedom of speech --
rights which, through their exercise, confirm our patriotic
allegiance to our country.
Dissent must never be interpreted as weakness, but as an exercise in
strength. Those who move to stifle dissent are the true enemies of
democracy. To understand why, consider this: Unlike citizens of many
other countries, Americans do not pledge allegiance to a human
leader. Our allegiance is to our flag as a symbol of the idea of
democracy and freedom. By dedicating ourselves to the idea and ideal
of freedom, we are free to debate the decisions made by our elected
leaders -- supporting or disagreeing with them as we wish. We can
take our dissent to the streets as we did in the 1960's and be as
vocal as we want. None of these actions must ever be interpreted as
an attack on democracy or on our government. Dissenters have the
same patriotic allegiance to this country as those who support the
President's position. We can all be proud to be Americans while
differing in our opinions on how we should conduct various aspects of
our business around the world.
So, if you see some of us in the streets, if you see our dissenting
perspectives in print, do not for an instant think that democracy is
being attacked. The only way democracy can be attacked is if some
decide to attempt to stifle the rights of free speech and assembly
that form the cornerstones of our country. If that happens, then
those people will be the true enemies of democracy.
The American journalist Walter Lippman once wrote that "if we all
think alike, then none of us thinks very much."
In support of good thinking,
David Thornburg

Hi everyone... I just wanted to let you know that I've just published my
latest article. It takes a look at online steganography, the technique of
hiding secret data files in public documents. There have been a lot of
allegations as of late regarding terrorists supposedly using steganography
to hide terrorist instructions in images on adult web sites. There's no
proof to this claim, but the allegation has stirred up a lot of discussion
regarding the Internet and balancing national security with personal civil
liberties.
Because the piece is a bit off-topic for the list, I decided not to publish
it in full here. But if you'd like to read it, it's available online here:
http://www.benton.org/DigitalBeat/db103101.html
I've also put together a demonstration of steganography, after I downloaded
stego software off the Net and successfully hid a picture of my cat inside a
public domain photo of the space shuttle:
http://www.benton.org/DigitalBeat/stegdemo.html
Hope some of you find it interesting...
thanks,

Greetings!
Here's an exciting way to bring local, US & World geography to life
for your students with a very unique Web project.
The Degree Conflence Project
http://www.confluence.org
"The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and
longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take
pictures at each location. The pictures and stories will then be
posted here."
With a camera and a GPS receiver, you can join the fun. Or, you can
use this site as a model for a simpler student activity limited to
exploring the school property: find a location, take a photograph
with a digital camera, write a story about it, and post the results
to a webpage. With a little cross-curricular planning, you can
integrate technology with the language arts, science, and social
studies curriculum, and meet plenty of learning standards, too.
Speaking of Yahoo Groups, take a look at the nygps group, a new list
for teachers who are exploring the use of GPS in school in New York
State. Don't worry - we like teachers from other states, too!

If you have slides , it might be good to purchase a good slide scanner. The half
decent ones are $200 to thousands. Nikon, Poloroid, Minolta make good ones for
around $500 to more. You can even bid on them on ebay.
Depends on what you want to use the slides for . To put on web the resolution
does not have to be that great (you can make due with the cheaper ones or even
microtek scanner comes with scanner attachment.
But for printing possible pics from slides you need a better scanner like above.
Hope that gets you started.

I'm looking into the possibility of digitizing a fairly extensive slide
collection (several thousand slides) for our art history class.
Trevor,
I have been digitizing my own slides from the 10 years I spent in
Latin America. I researched scanners at the local Best Buy, and found a
cheap one that has an attachment specifically for this purpose.
Alternatively, I have thought about using a cut-out piece of
cardboard to space the slides on the scanner platten and then using some
kind of light above the scanner. I think about these things because my cheap
scanner only does 1 slide at a time, and that becomes somewhat tedious after
about 5 slides. I have seen good scanners that have an overhead
illumination attachment to scan slides and transparencies (Ulead makes one).
You have to use a graphic editor to then manipulate each slide, but
you probably have kids that will do that.
I looked into several photo companies doing this for me, and quickly
came to the conclusion that doing it myself would illiminate having to take
out a second morgage.

Has anyone done anything similar? Who are some reputable companies
we could contact? What kind of price are we looking at?
Or does anyone know of equipment to purchase that is reasonably priced?

The Knowledge Loom (http://knowledgeloom.org) has just launched a
spotlight on Good Models of Teaching with Technology (GMOTT). The
content in this new spotlight is provided by the Northeast and
Islands Regional Technology in Education Consortium (NEIRTEC). Now, a
national audience can have access to best practices, success stories,
policy links, and interactive tools to get the conversation going in
their own schools and districts. It is a good tool for ongoing,
job-embedded professional development and for planning school
improvement initiatives. Stories about schools who have put these
practices into action are featured. If you have a story to tell
related to one of the listed best practices that can be tied back to
observable results, we'd like to hear it. Contact loom@...

Investigate this valuable resource at
http://knowledgeloom.org/gmott. Join in an online panel discussion
Oct. 15 - Nov. 15 with practicing educators and staff developers who
have successfully integrated technology into their work.
The Knowledge Loom is an award-winning on-line professional
development resource from the Education Alliance and the Northeast &
Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University, which
was developed with seed money for the U.S. Department of Education.
It provides visitors with opportunities to discuss educational
practice locally and with experts as they read about successful
schools and evidence-based best practices and as they explore
supporting Web links. In addition to GMOTT, other spotlights include
Technology Leadership provided by the Appalachia Educational
Laboratory (AEL), Middle School Math from Eisenhower national
Clearing House (ENC), Cultural Relevance in Teaching from the New
England Equity Assistance Center (EAC), Early Literacy from the LAB
and National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), Professional Development,
Home-School-Community Partnerships, and more. In late November, The
Knowledge Loom will offer a companion professional development
guidebook that provides collaborative inquiry activities and
worksheets to guide cohorts of educators through using self-selected
Knowledge Loom content for decision-making and bench-marking at their
sites. The guidebook will be available online at

Hi everyone... I know through several private emails that some folks had
expressed concern regarding using video cameras as editing decks when making
digital movies for the Web. For those of you who use Sony miniDV cameras,
one of the common complaints against them is that they start to crinkle
tapes after 50 or 100 hours of recording use. There are several potential
causes to this, the most common being the accumulation of gunk on the
capstan of the recording unit.
Below is a URL that might be of use. It talks about some of the causes and
remedies for tape crinkles.
http://www.bealecorner.com/trv900/trouble/index.html
(the page is specifically for the Sony trv900, but much of it applies to
other sony miniDV cameras)
My girlfriend and I have been using a Sony VX-2000 for the last year or so
to edit her documentary on Thai boxing. (I'm serving as editor in the
project.) One of the cameras we used experienced crinkling, while another
one's been fine. The one that had the problems required repair work. The
repair guy theorized it was because we were being too impatient when it came
to closing the doors after putting in a miniDV tape. It's important to push
the inner door first, let it close electronically, then close the outer
door.
Apart from that one issue, I've probably logged several hundred hours of
digitizing and editing with our VX-2000 and it's performed very well.
For those of you wondering what kind of setup we have at home, I've got a
Mac G4 with a 433Mhz processor, 384 megs of RAM, 30 gig internal hard disk +
120 gigs of external firewire hard disks (broadcast-quality miniDV video
takes up a whopping 12 gigs per hour, and we've already run out of disk
space), and a firewire hub for connecting an extra four firewire devices.
We're using Final Cut Pro 1.25, which I love immensely. Normally iMovie
would suit most people's needs, but since we're editing this for eventual TV
broadcast, we need to take advantage of some of FCP's more advanced
features.

The dazzle comes with it's own software as well .
There is a program from sonic foundry for $99 that looks pretty good fyi for
another choice.
I like the way Imovie works and once I got the hang of it, making videos
just took time and some creativity.
Anyone seriously doing movies videos should use digital or dig 8. So much
better then hi 8mm and will last longer, color is better and copies
perfectly from tape to tape without loss.
Anyone else who has hi 8mm or vhs (does not work with imovie unless you
convert first to digital) -a good hardware package somewhat like Dazzle but
has usb connections and no firewire is Global village fx. Is you want the
review (is it for mac) I can send it to you. (send me email privately).

This week's edition of the Social Studies forum looks at the arts in
teaching social studies.
The forum is set for 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific time), Wednesday,
October 31, in TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org).
As always TAPPED IN help desk personnel will be onhand to assist new
users. It's recommended that new users log in approximately 10 minutes
early to become acquainted with the easy-to-use interface.
In addition, some users may want to remember that this week marks the
end of daylight savings time (almost everyone had their clocks "fall
back" an hour on October 28), and that may affect them.
Also, after the October 31 session, the forum will be scheduled biweekly
in order to more completely promote sessions. Our next session will be
on November 14, and will feature guests who will discuss how to use CNN
Newsroom in the social studies classroom.
Sincerely,
Michael Hutchison

You have several choices for Windows "iMovie-like" software packages. Below
is a list of the software I've tried. Each package is under $100 and easy to
use. (I assume you're looking for something below the high-end solutions
such as Adobe Premier.)
Microsoft Windows ME Movie Maker:

MGI VideoWave:

Another solution is to buy iBooks loaded with Virtual PC software. This will
emulate the Windows OS and allow you to use both platforms with one machine.
The other great part of this solutions is that you will get to enjoy the
internal wireless cards that fit under the keyboard of an iBook and the
longer battery life. We have both Windows laptops and iBooks. We purchased
both so that we could enjoy both platforms. In the future we will seriously
consider buying iBooks with Virtual PC instead because it is easier to
support one platform/one machine from a tech side, the iBook batteries last
hours longer, and the internal wireless cards are much easier to maintain
than the PCI cards that can be easily slipped out of the slots of our Windows
machines and be broken, lost, or stolen.

Hi everyone... As promised, wwwedu has made the transition to its new server
at yahoogroups.com. A few quick admin items:
If you used to receive wwwedu in digest format and are now getting
individual messages, you can change your settings by going to the wwwedu
admin page at yahoogroups:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu
If you click on the "edit my membership" button on the right side of the
page, you'll be able to switch your membership to digest format. If it
doesn't work, please email me privately and I'll take care of it.
If you haven't received wwwedu in a long time and are suddenly getting
messages, it's because you never actually left the list - you only postponed
your messages from coming it. If this is the case, you can also go to the
admin website URL listed above, click the edit membership button, and leave
the list. Alternatively, you can send an email to
wwwedu-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com and that should remove you from the list.
WWWEDU's official homepage and archive will continue to remain at my edweb
site (http://edwebproject.org/wwwedu.html) but we'll also have access to the
yahoo groups admin page (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu), which
includes several features I hope list members find useful:
Chat
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/chat
Allows group members to conduct text chats as well as voice chats
Files
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/files/
A repository where members can place files for sharing with the list.
(For example, I'm keeping a copy of the wwwedu FAQ here.)
Photos
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/lst
An online photo album where members can archive images of interest to the
list.
Bookmarks
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/links
A hotlist of URLs shared by list members. I'd encourage people to use this
to list their favorite sites and tools, which we can use for future
reference.
Database
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/database
A basic databasing feature.
Polls
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu/polls
We can use this to conduct quick surveys of list members.
Anyway, I hope you get a chance to explore these features....
Today, I'll also repost the latest version of the wwwedu faq just so
everyone can have a copy of current list procedures. I'll also post a list
announcement that you can share with your colleagues - as you may have
noticed, list membership has dwindled somewhat over the last couple of years
(from around 1700 to around 1400), and I'd like to get the word out to folks
who might be interested.
Thanks for your patience during this transition. I really appreciate it.
take care,
ac
