Does anybody think it would be helpful if there were some mine
history listed for Fireco and other areas?

As some of you already know, there is a Winding Gulf WV Group

groups.msn.com/windinggulf

Some residents of those areas would be very helpful.

Hey Charlie and thanks for the reply!

I double checked my Edkins Catalog and there was squat (big surprise)
about the naming. However, thats the best explanation I have yet
heard.

I also went to the MSHA database for the mines in the area and you
guessed it, no owner information was available. I will try another
idea and see what you think:

There is a West Virginia Coal Miner Rootsweb board and mailing list.
Maybe someone knows there and I have some family friends in Jonben to
ask as well.

This would be great info to have and thanks very much!

I wanted to ask folks here what was the hardest part of scrip
collecting for them?

My first part was trying to find out what all the denominations were
ofa specific make. For Example, Jonben scrip did not have known
denominations after the dollar piece, but Whitby scrip goes up to a 5
dollar piece.

Would it help others in their research to start a listing of towns
and what all available denominations were?

If so, I can do some look ups using my Edkins cat.

Welcome Folks!

If any of you have questions about a specific make of scrip or
company that issued it in WV, ask away! There are bound to be alot of
folks here who would be willing to help.

The best help for me so far has been:

1)Researching the towns that I wanted scrip from

2)Edkins Coal Scrip Cat Vol2 for WV only

3)Other collectors and of course

4)Miners

I was lucky enough to get a piece of scrip from the Douglas Coal Co
at Fireco WV. Scrip from Fireco is getting to be increasingly rare to
come by.

Does anyone else have pics of scrip they wish to post?

I hae just posted a pic of some scrip from Jonben WV. I would require
a penny and Nickel for a complete set. However, I noticed something
that I cant find data for:

Some, not all of the scrip has the reverse stamped TEELS. What did
this mean?

Thanks

I finally bought a copy of Vol 2 of Edkins Coal scrip Catalogue as it
is THE SOURCE for scip info.

I found out that scrip that is Counter stamped with a 0 like the
Beckley piece I have posted is done for no known reason.

If anyone can provide some feedback on this I would be grateful.
Spreading the word is definitely hoe I learn.

I have posted a picture of an Osborne Scrip machine and have a few
questions.

1)When a piece of scrip is "counter marked" what does this mean? I
have an example of a counter marked piece here whoich is the Beckley
Scrip piece. NOTE the 0 on front of the scrip.

2)ORCO machines were they bought or leased from ORCO?

Thanks again

I have posted sopme scrip pics for Fire Creek Fuel at
Jonben WV.

Any comments would be welcomed as the scrip maker at
Jonben was not ORCO. Why would ORCO make the scrip for
Whitby and NOT Jonben less than 1 mile away?

Thanks

I am very new to the world of Scrip collecting. After doing some
research on scrip, it was very obvious that there is not alot of
places besides Edkins Catalog to find out more about scrip. I hope
this group can become a forum for sharing info and really learning
alot about coal scrip in general.
