This is not the first time I've heard good things about Chad,
although I haven't had the pleasure of doing business with him yet.
I agree with with supporting those who support us, so Chad will get
my business in the future.

Speaking of doing business Chad, if your reading this? What have you
got available in F and G? If you have some I'll place an order with
you.

I have actually done business with a couple of other vendors here,
like DG&A and Art Applewhite (I ordered one of his saucers to build
whith my stepson) and they have been great.

Thank you for the very kind words. Lots of growing
pains along the way with more around the corner. It
has been a pleasure serving the Texas rocketry
community. We have all watched the various Texas
vendors grow and have success. We have the best
rocketeers in the nation.

On top of being a great guy with excellent service. He also has the
following plusses going for him....

1> He is a local texas guy just trying to supliment his income by
selling stuff to the rocketry community (his is a pretty avid
rocketeer as well). If you can keep your money at home.

2> His prices are always around internet prices (sometimes a little
more, sometimes a little less). So there is no reason to not buy
from him.

3> No need to pay shipping/hazmat fees when you can get them from
him. If he has to ship them to you then that is another matter of
course.

4> Without Chad supporting our hobby we would all be in a bad place.
If it's not worth his time/effort to keep up the business then he
will drop it and we will all be in trouble then.

The above actually applies to ALL our texas vendors:
CLE Enterprises (Chad 'motorman' Ellis) - Aerotech/AMW/Ellis Mnt/CTI
dealer.

Ellis Mountain (Robert Ellis) - Texas manufacturer of rocket motors
(single use and reloadable). He did alot of Aerotechs production
while they where out of production. Obviously his business is much
smaller than aerotech so he couldn't produce even a small fraction
of demand but he did what he could. (www.ellismountain.com)

Quickburst - Ignitors, perfectflite altimeters, Top Flight recovery
products. His ignitors cannot be beat for the G and Up range. Plus
if you have a special project (large cluster, airstarts, etc) he
will manufacture something working with you to make sure it works.

DG&A - Excellent rocket kit manufacturer. (www.dgarockets.com)

Down to Earth Rocketry - Binder Designs and BSD rocket kits as well
as parts etc. (www.downtoearthrocketry.com)

Art Applewhite - Non traditional rocket kits. (www.artapplewhite.com)

Sapp'N Your Time - Don't know much details as I haven't met him yet
(will at NSL). He deals with hybrid motor hardware and support
equipement.

Squirrel Works Rockets - Some of the best looking model rockets
available. (www.squirrel-works.com).

All of these guys are Texas Rocket Family and they all treat us just
like family. Never heard a bad thing about any of them, and as far
as I can tell you never will.

I will e-mail Chad in a few days and ask him about F's and G's.
I ordered some G80's from rocketmotion a month ago and haven't seem
them yet, and no communication to let me know if they have shipped or
been back ordered or what. I call and have to leave a messege but
never get a call back. I won't ever order anything else from them.

Thanks again for the info Jeff!

Alex was unable to attend BOB this year. Alex is one of the few "gas
passers" in texas (hybrid motors). However he is a great flyer who
has been around for awhile - flying BlackPowder, APCP, and hybrid
motors. If you haven't witnessed a hybrid flight you are in for a
treat. The sound/almost non-existant smoke/and raw speed are
amazing. By far the best for me is the sound on some of the motors.
I can't describe it in words but lets say the sound is where
the "gas passers" get thier name.

Thanks - however I will not take credit where it is not due. When I
joined the group it was already a great group. When I became
president this year, I was convinced that the group is in Excellent
shape and so all I could do would be to screw it up. So far that
thankfully hasn't happened - but not just because of me. There is a
core group of folks that make AARG work day in and day out. Without
them the club would not be what it is today. I'm just privaledged to
be a part of the group and to be able to serve the community that
has been great to me.

I was happy to see so many AARG'ers at BOB. We all had a good time
and the NHRA guys put on a good launch. I personally flew the most
flights ever in one day for me - 5. I flew everything from a 24mm
F21 to a 38mm I285. The best part was having some of the "Big dogs"
in texas rocketry (probably the nation) tell me when I had a good
flight. Nothing like having people you respect say you're doing a
good job!

This early I don't know. The vendor attendance at our Summer Launch
site (Granger lake) is alot lower. The main reasons are:
1> The flyer attendance is alot lower since the field is only "J"
capable.
2> These launches tend to end about 1-2pm, just due to everyone
being done. Plus it's just DANG HOT most of the time which tends to
take the energy out of you fast.

You are welcome to come to any launch you like. I just wanted to be
sure you knew the above so you didn't make the trip and be
disappointed. Our September - March field in Hutto is amazing and
the turnout there has grown alot this year - mostly because we could
allow "M" motors. I expect next year it will grow even more. So
these are the best launches to attend - but again you are welcome
any time.

As far as motors go you can buy "G" motors and below without any
permits or storage requirements (Anything with 62.5grams or less of
propellant). All you need to do is find them. Chad gets some so he
is a source and he can mail them to you. A few other good sources
are:

http://www.giantleaprocketry.com/
Excellent Vendor. He shows his stock on the web site but I don't
know how often it gets updated. Just give him a call.

http://www.greatlakeshobbies.com/ (they don't have stock on thier
web site but you can call them and order what you need over the
phone).

http://www.magnumrockets.com/ (again you will need to phone for
availablity).

I have purchased stuff from all the above and can say that they all
treated me great. Giant Leap is my favorite though and I order from
them everything I can't get via Texas Vendors.

NOTE: When you mail order rocket motors/reloads they must ship via
ground. This means USPS ground or FedEx ground. FedEx is pretty good
at getting stuff to you quickly. However USPS is all over the place.
I have had orders arrive in under a week and other take almost 2
weeks. I think the USPS guys just put the ground stuff on a shelf
somewhere and forget about it.

If you order anything above the 62.5 gram limit you will have to pay
a hazmat fee of usually around $20 on top of the ground shipping.
Plus you get a box on your front door that says "EXPLOSIVES" on a
big orange sticker. I'm sure my neighbors wonder what the heck I'm
up to. <evil grin>

Carried away? How. All good rocketeers get carried away talking
about thier "baby's". Just like the car folks! Unfortuneately we
loose more than the car guys do..... :-(

Thanks for the compliment. I want to help anywhere I can from
helping new people enter the hobby (and try to teach them along the
way) to helping our local vendors out by advertising what a great
group they are, to helping fight the ATF over thier non-
scientific/arbitrary rules they are trying to impose on us. I just
wish I had more experience to help on the teaching side. There is so
much to learn. We are blessed in Texas by having a fairly large
group of VERY experienced fliers. Guys who have done everything
already and can tell you what works and doesn't so you don't have to
beat your head against the wall.

I will say that I'm very happy that you decided to fly some F/G
stuff, to do some more of the learning we where talking about. It
may slow down your progress from L0 -> L1 -> L2 -> L3 but I can
guarantee that you will be a much better rocketeer for taking the
time to learn everything you can at each step along the way. Plus
you will then have more knowledge/experience to share with
other "newbies" you meet along the way.

I've just been at this for a little over a year now and needless to
say I've gone pretty crazy with it. I'm just waiting to see when my
wife gives up and tells me to get all the rockets out of the house.
So far I've convinced her that the moisture outside would be just
horrible for them!

Don't shut up about your hobby. Enthusiasm is contagious and thats
what we need to keep the hobby alive!

Time: 9:00 AM till Interest wains (or 5:00 PM). Last year we were usually done in the 1-2pm timeframe. So this time really depends on how many fliers show up.

Place: The Granger Lake Field near Taylor. Please see www.aarg.org for directions. Road signs will be out but I'm not sure of the locations at this time.

Sanctioning body: Tripoli Rocketry Association, fully insured

Waiver: 6000 feet.

Power levels: This field is limited to anything that can launch from 100 feet. Single J motor or complex H.

These launches, due to the smaller field, are much less formal. The BP stuff and HPR stuff will co-exist in the same area. We will have one RSO and LCO for this launch. All launches must be under the control of the LCO.

Vendors that will be at the launch:
Art Applewhite Rockets (lots of non-traditional rockets)
Down to Earth Rocketry (Kits from BSD & Binder Designs, as well as parts etc.)
Quarks (Great food/snacks/drinks for sale)

Parking:
Parking is somewhat open. Don't drive into any planted area (stay in the grassy section directly behind the house. Normally people park in somewhat of a line behind the LCO table.

Launch Cards:
All flights will need to have a launch card filled out. If you would like to fill one out early feel free to download them from :
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rocketry-austin/files/AARG%20Launch or http://tinyurl.com/ywfmq
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AARGlaunch/files/AARG%20Launch%20Info or http://tinyurl.com/3a487

Launch fees:
AARG members: $5 for F motor and above, Free for E motor and below.
Non-members: $10 for F motor and above, $5 for E motor and below.
All children fly free but must be under adult supervision.

Current Weather outlook:
Temperature 77/58. 30% chance of Scattered Showers. Winds from the East at 9 mph.

This is our first launch of the new Summer season back at Granger Lake. Some of the setup/parking/.... will need to be worked out as we go to ensure a safe and enjoyable launch. If you have comments or suggestions feel free to send them to me or any other officer. Hope we have a great Summer season!

Good point Dave, I didn't even think about giving notice when I put
something in one of the other sections, Thanks!

I read some of the posts in Austin Rocketry group about BOB 6, sounds
like it was a lot of fun. Wish I could have been there!

Hi Mike,

Are you in this area? (Odessa/Midland) This weekend is going to be
full for me, I work a 24 hr shift at the fire station starting 7am
Sat. to 7am Sun. and then a 12 hr shift at Hospital ER starting at 11
am on Sun. Whew! I just realized it's gonna be a long weekend!
I have been trying to find people in this area that I was informed
had been involved with rocketry in the past, (2 to 3 years ago) but
as yet I have had no luck. Me, my son, and my stepson are the only
people that I know for sure that are active in this area. I am
designing some fliers to put up in some key places to try and
generate some interest.
Next weekend I will be out of town. Saturday the 10th of April will
be my next Sat. at home. Maybe by then I will have sparked some
interest and I could get more people involved. How does that date
look for you?
Thanks for your interest and your help Mike! Feel free to contact me
by e-mail if you like, or you can contact me by phone.
My cell # is 432-889-8718

Thanks again
Jim

Hey, Jim, you look great in that picture...
your rocket shop is sure bigger than mine!
I've looked at the photos you have posted
in the photo's section...you've done very
well on your Mail Order. One suggestion
if I may, when you've posted something
in the Photos and Files tab, post a notice
on the message board so we'll be aware
of it.

I'm not sure if Alex was at BOB - 6 last
Saturday, if he was, I may have missed
him. I was busy bringing another model
to launch about every 20 - 40 minutes...
so much so that Linda and the other
range crew just skipped over the preflight
checklist from me and told me to put
my model on a pad! Alex, if you're reading this, maybe at NSL 2004
we'll
make sure to meet. And, yes, Jeff is
a fantastic guy...went above and beyond
the call of duty to help me get the
engines I needed for BOB - 6. From
what I can gather in reading the
rocketry Austin message board, he
appears to be the main force behind
their organization...I think the Austin
group had the most people at BOB - 6.

May I propose an informal meeting sometime this weekend for those in
the Odessa/Midland area who would want to help getting this club
going. I can be there anytime this weekend except saturday morning,
but I can't speak for your schedules so I'll let you suggest time and
place.

Peace,
Mike

P.S. I added a link to The Rocketry Forum in the links area. It's a

I spoke to my wife at lunch and mentioned to the launch in granger on
5/1, she said,"lets don't talk about it, lets do it". I looked at my
schedule and I happen to be off that Fri and Sat, so it looks like a
go. Just wondering if Chad will be there as a motor vendor. I don't
think I will try to cert, just fly my DG&A mini sonik-blast, my
Binder aspire, and the Air Mail on a G80. I think I'll save the cert
attempt for NSL.

Yes Dave, that's my big ugly mug, and my little rocket shop in the
corner. I had just finished the rocket I'm holding. I named it Air
Mail because I built it totaly from scratch using a mailing tube I
bought at Office Depot. The nose cone was turned on a lathe by a
friend of mine out of basswood and then hollowed out to reduce weight.

Oops got carried away again.

I just don't think Jeff can help it, he's just a nice guy! He has
spent several hours I'm sure, doing his best to get me started in
this great sport, and going in the right direction. I have to mention
Alex Mericas too because he has done the same. Great sport, Great
guys!

Ok, I'll shut up now <grin>

I spoke to Danny on the phone briefly, he was very helpful, and very
personable. I will buy from him again.

Thanks for the invite, I will be out of town on 4/3, but 5/1 might be
doable if I can get off work. I'll work on that.

Thanks for the info on Texas launches and the Potrocs site.

Itchin to go!

Danny (DG&A) makes a very quality product. I don't think you would
be unhappy with anything he makes. I am currently building my L2
rocket and it is from him (modified slightly for electronics) - the
manatee. He just an all around great guy but I can say that for all
our vendors here in texas (I think I've met them all).

You are welcome to attend the AARG launches on 4/3 and 5/1 if you
like. We are near Granger for these and the rest of the summer.
There is a map at www.aarg.org. Course it's a pretty long drive and
our summer launches are usually smaller shorter affairs. They also
hold launches around Amarillo which is closer to you I believe. You
can find information about most launches around Texas at
www.artapplewhite.com/launches.html

The group in Amarillo is called POTROC and thier web site is:
www.potrocs.org

As far as NSL goes - I recieved your registration stuff so you are
all ready to go!

See you soon!

You betcha Dave, really looking forward to meeting a bunch of great
guys and making a lot of new friends, and burning some rocket fuel
too! I'll be there all 3 days, and plan on soaking up as much rocket
science as I can.
Looking forward to meeting you too!

Hi Jeff,

Great to hear from you! Yes sir, I'm doing my best to get something
going here. Just designed a flyer to to be placed in a few key places
in town (places that sell model rockets)and did a little detective
work to find a couple of names that have been involved in HPR in the
past, but as yet haven't been able to locate them.

I'm all ready for the L1 attempt. I have an H128 lined up, which
should provide for a low and slow cert to about 1200' at my final
weight. I haven't been able to get out of town for a launch because
of work, so it looks like NSL is going to be my first chance.

I took your advice and ordered a mini sonic-blast from DG&A. It's in
the painting stage right now, and went together very easily. I'm
planning on flying it on F's and G's, and maybe as a back up for my
cert rocket.

Thanks for the interest, and thanks for posting Jeff!

Hi Jeff!

Good to hear from you! Yes sir, doing my best to spark some interest
here! I just designed some fliers to post in a few key positions in
town. (places that sell model rockets, ie Hobby Lobby ect...)

I'm all set for the level 1 attempt, motor issue taken care of, but
I'm still waiting for the 29-180 hardware to arrive from
Rocketmotion. Communication with them has been spotty at best.

I haven't been able to attend any launches because of my work
schedule, but I sure have wanted too! It looks like NSL will be my
first opportunity and really looking forward meeting you guys.

I took your advice and ordered a mini sonic-blast from DG&A. It's in
the paint prep stage at present. Went together very easily and looks
really sharp. Thanks for the advice on that! Will fly it on F's and
G's, and will make a good back-up for the cert flight, just in case.

Thanks for your interest, and your post Jeff!

We don't have a club, or a field with waivers as yet. I set up this
group so we could maybe get some interest going. I have done a little
detective work and have got a couple of names of people in the area
that have been involved in HPR in the past. I'm in the process of
looking them up now.

Hi!

Glad to see you are trying to up the interest in rocketry in your
area. That's great!

Did you ever get your L1 stuff sorted out? I don't think I saw you
at any of the recent launches (course there haven't been many
either).

The next AARG launch is 4/3/04. There is a possible launch in ASA
put on by the HOTROC group on 3/27 and 3/28 but I have seen no
confirmation that this is going to happen yet.

Take Care!
