Presenting the 5th Annual "Break Hank's Bank"

Now through Jan. 31, 2010, WTP board president Hank Kimmel will match
ALL donations made to Working Title Playwrights up to $10,000! That's
ALL donations, from ALL resources (so that's YOU and maybe your matching
gift from your employer?), from $1 to $1,000 (or more-who are we to
limit you?)!! With an overall Break Hank's Bank goal of $20,000 no
   amount is too small, so...

Let's make Hank go for broke!

Your contribution is tax deductible, you will receive formal and
personal recognition, and a glowing warm-fuzzy in your heart for having
done a really swell thing for this growing 501(c)3 non-profit
organization, which is the leading playwright development organization
   in the Southeast.

Checks or money orders (payable to "Working Title Playwrights")

   will be gratefully accepted at:

   Working Title Playwrights c/o BHB

   P.O. Box 585 Decatur, GA 30030-0585

Alternately, you may conveniently make your contribution online by

If you use this vehicle for contributing, be sure to send an email to

   can thank you by letter.

Look at all the good you'll be doing!

You can confidently give, knowing that your money is measurably being
put to work, supporting theatre and new play development in our
community. Thanks to your past generosity, we've been able to forge
   ahead with the following:

   * Expand our educational programming, which includes the acclaimed
Kick-Ass Workshop; Playwrights Playground Series; Based on True Stories:
Creating Plays From What's Real; and our first Master Class, led this
   year by Chicago playwright, Carlos Murillo;

   * Extend the scope of our competitive series, The Ethel Woolson Lab,
which is now adjudicated by the leading literary and artistic managers
   in the Atlanta theatre community;

   * Increase the number of playwrights served (we now have 60+) and
   audience reached;

   * Enrich our relationships with the top theatres in town including
Academy Theatre, Actor's Express, Essential Theatre, Horizon Theatre and
   Synchronicity Theatre;

   * Provide more opportunities for play readings through our First Draft
   on Demand series with professional actors and facilitated talkbacks;

   * Create for the community a growing inventory of structurally-sound
   plays that entertain, and give voice and vision to the everyday;

   * Become a source of outreach for the Dramatists Guild, the national
   organization for playwrights.

In addition, Working Title Playwrights recently relaunched the wildly
successful 24-Hour Play Festival, inaugurated a new Dramaturgical
Service, and introduced our rollicking Playwright Slams at area
restaurants. Our members enjoyed successes both locally and nationally,
including Johnny Drago's Billy Budd: A Portrait in Seamen at the
Mondohomo Festival, Welcome to the Neighborhood by Hank Kimmel at JCC
CenterStage, and Vynnie Meli's Plagued, A Love Story at the New York
   Musical Theatre Festival and more!

All this is just the start.... but we need YOUR financial support to
   stay on our upward trajectory.

The journey to $20,000 starts with a single swing and a step-yours!

So please, give some dollars, grab a hammer, and let's put a
   hurtin' on Hank's Bank!

Working Title Playwrights presents Topher Payne's EVELYN IN PURGATORY, a WTP On
Demand Reading, Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., Actor's Express, King Plow
Arts Center, Atlanta, Ga. $5 at door (WTP members free).

EVELYN IN PURGATORY
a new play in two acts
by Topher Payne

SYNOPSIS:
When a complaint is filed against one of the 70,000 teachers in New York's
public schools, they're sent to a "Reassignment Center," one of a series of
empty offices in the Department of Education Building. There, they sit and wait
for their case to be reviewed. Usually for months. Sometimes for years.

A claim of improper behavior by a failing student lands Evelyn Reid in "the
rubber room," where she encounters a group of teachers, some guilty, some not,
who have long since lost any hope of returning to a classroom.

Over the course of the school year, these colleagues form an unlikely
alliance, reminding each other of forgotten passions, emerging to face life
outside in unexpected new directions. They also learn French and workshop a
screenplay.

Dear Friends,

Last night's fund raising event for Allen Hagler was a smashing success!
While we're still counting and have several outstanding bids from the
silent auction to be settled, we're expecting a tally of around $8,000 -
100% of which will go to Allen himself. PRETTY DARNED GREAT for an
event thrown together on the sheer will of love. As one friend has
said, "It felt way more like a birthday party!"

If you weren't able to make it, then you missed the opportunity to enjoy
a wealth of food, drink and generosity, as friends and family of Allen
Hagler gathered together to hear new plays by Curt Shannon and David
Fisher in concert readings directed by Betty Hart. In addition, the
dynamic duo of Johnny Drago and Emma Crandall wowed the crowd with
back-handed compliments that some of us are still wincing from today
(but in a happy, codependent way).

Food was provided by Feast, Saba, Savage and The James Joyce Pub;
Colleen Hilker, Jo Howarth and Perry Patrick.

Hooch was provided by Paris, Decatur and Bob Smith and Daphne Mintz, who
swears she is no longer unhappy with her husband (today).

Space was provided by Academy Theatre.

Invaluable volunteer help was provided by Kim Brundidge, George Devours,
Connie Melton, Robert Drake, Jim Walsh, Lainey Welsch and Jared Foust.

A cornucopia of donated gedunk made this silent auction and raffle a
delightful mix of original art(s) and first edition and autographed
copies, hand crafted jewelry, sweaters, knitted caps (Allen will soon be
wearing a raspberry cap made by Josie Burgin-Lawson, thanks!), tickets
from just about every theater in town, switch plates, thigh masters and
more! If you came without a sense of humor, surely you left with one
intact.

We haven't stopped working for Allen's cost of living. There were a
number of items left out of the auction that will become available to
purchase / bid on via an online auction. Stay tuned from either Jo
Howarth or myself for more details.

We'll keep collecting contributions via Paypal to
friendsofallenhagler@....

To read the background on Allen's story, visit Working Title
Playwrights' blog at http://www.workingtitleblog.com/?p=183.

If I've missed anyone in my acknowledgments, I humbly apologize. Feel
free to give yourselves a shout out in response to this missive. I just
wanted to get something out to everyone, letting you know I HEART HEART
HEART YOU ALL. Your love for Allen and your generous spirits are making
his life that much simpler. Overwhelming, maybe, as he had no idea, but
simpler.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

An Evening of Fun and Fundraising for Allen Hagler

For those who don't yet know, longtime Atlanta actor and all around
wonderful guy Allen Hagler was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer
that has metastasized into his liver, making it Stage IV. Like many in
our country, Allen had an hourly wage job and employers who truly love
him but could not provide health care benefits. With the help of his
good friends Jill Patrick and Olivia Brantley, he's finding his way
through the Grady Hospital system but between treatments and pain
management, at this time, Allen is physically unable to work.

To read the whole story go to: http://www.workingtitleblog.com/?p=183
<http://www.workingtitleblog.com/?p=183>

Because we love Allen (and despite the fact that he REALLY hates asking
for help), Working Title Playwrights and the Academy Theatre present:

A Silent Auction, Raffle. and Reading for Allen Hagler

DATE: Tuesday, November 17

TIME: 6PM – Doors open revealing free food while it
lasts, $2 hooch, soft drinks, or dessert, and $1 compliments, a chance
to win REALLY good stuff, and more. PLUS a smorgasbord of fun geedunk to
bid on in a silent auction.

7:30PM – Readings begin of 2 short works by WTP playwrights Curt

   Shannon and David Fisher

WHERE: Academy Theatre - 119 Center Street, Avondale
Estates, GA 30002

COST: Admission is $10 at the door*. Tickets for drinks,
dessert, raffle, etc are $1 each. NOTE: Every cent goes to Allen!

*If – for any reason - you just can't afford the $10 PLEASE don't
let that stop you from coming! Bring two cans of food for the Atlanta
Food Bank or just come and have a good time celebrating Allen and new
plays for the American stage.

Or… if you want to help Allen but can't attend the fundraiser,
please consider making a donation of goods &/o services to the
auction/raffle by contacting Jo Howarth OFFLINE
(johowarth@... <mailto:johowarth@...> ) with
questions and/or donations no later than November 15 (which is REALLY
soon!). The more the merrier!

ATTENTION PLAYWRIGHTS AND OTHER WRITERS!

Are you willing to examine your work more critically?

Are you looking for constructive ways to re-invigorate and market
your play?
The Playwrights Playground is a ground-breaking series of
independent workshops that are designed to explore the element of
"play" and craft in playwriting. This particular
workshop will focus on individual students' own work, using a
series of hands-on exercises to get playwrights to think more
critically about the main component of their work -- the story.
Playwrights must bring in either a completed copy of one of their
works, a work-in-progress, or the germ of a new idea.
Be prepared to write and share.

Dear Bob,

I'm working on my second musical now. The name and address for the contest you
are referring to didn't come through too well. If you can send a website, I'd
love to check it out.

Personally, my feeling is that you should take your $100 and offer pizza to your
favorite local theater to do a private, table reading. With $400, you can offer
to finance an actual "open to the public" concert reading (reader's theater
style). If the play is ready for it, then getting reactions from the general
public is always a good thing. Doing a musical concert reading will real easy if
you can play the piano accompaniment yourself.

Anyone familiar with this contest? They charge fees ranging from $100 for a
dramaturg to read and send a 3-5 page eval or $400 for a 15-20 pg eval to a
'table read' for $240 per hour for three member staff evaluation; six hour
minimum.
I am also going to add their submission guideline pdf to the files section...
I know at least one of us other than me writes musicals, right?
Thanks

Sunday night, Working Title Playwright Topher Payne and WTP board member
Jo Howarth were honored with Metropolitan Atlanta Theater (MAT) Awards.
Jo received Best Leading Actress in a Play for "Don't Look at the Fat
Lady" by Topher Payne, while "Above the Fold" by Topher Payne was
recognized as the Best New Play and Best Overall Production. "Above the
Fold" was produced by Process Theatre, directed by DeWayne Morgan and
featured Jo Howarth, Amanda Cucher and Greg Morris.

It is safe to say these plays are a little "different," and that fact
was never more apparent than during the ceremony. Fifteen theater
companies were in contention for awards and Process Theatre was one of
the two semi-professional groups with nominations - Essential Theatre
was the other. Both had done new plays or a play with a socio-political
message. Among the dozen community theaters considered, the nominations
were all for productions of standards like "The Fantastiks," "Man of La
Mancha," "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," and "Driving Miss Daisy."

On behalf of all of Working Title Playwrights, I congratulate Jo and
Topher and all of our friends for their successes and the MAT Awards for
recognizing the importance of producing new plays that sometimes
challenge audiences to go beyond their norms.

Cheers!
Topher Payne's one-woman play "Don't Look at the Fat Lady" was presented
as the first act of two 1-act plays by Topher Payne. The second act,
"Above the Fold," consists of four 10-minute plays in which three actors
create a total of 11 different characters.

Above the Fold: When one moment in your life captures the nation's
attention, what happens when the reporters are long-gone and the cameras
have moved on to the next story? Above the Fold tells the tales of
people who were on the periphery of these events. Featuring Amanda
Cucher, Greg Morris, and Jo Howarth.

Don't Look at the Fat Lady: It's been six years since she left the sofa.
Inspired by the true story of a 600-pound Florida woman who "became her
couch," Gloria attempts to answer the most common question about her
life, How did this happen? In doing so, she shares her thoughts on
God, love, family, Katie Couric, the Sex and the City finale, and a
nation that loves food, but is terrified of fat. Featuring Jo Howarth.

In case anyone was still seriously considering entering the New Works of Merit
contest...

This is from The Loop online-- i.e.: Gary Garrison

Evan

A message to all members of The Loop Online

We've often heard of issues surrounding this contest. This is extracted from
someone who was an intern at the theatre. We thought we should pass it forward.

---------------------------------

...Now the internship is bad, but what I learned about their contest is worse.
The scripts she [producer] is so determined to have interns read are submission
scripts for their big money making New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest.  They
charge $25 for the submission, and then offer the option of having your
evaluation sent to you: one evaluation for $40 more or two evaluations for $80
more -- a price which she claims to have raised this year to "make it more worth
her time".  The fact is however that these evaluations are the exact same
evaluations which the interns are doing for her.  I am personally a graduate
student at the _____ @ ___ University as a playwright,; however many of the
other interns are 18 year old actors fresh to New York having never attended
college, some are undergraduate NYU students confused about how to read a
script, and still others are simply people interested in becoming a "theater
person" and looking to this
internship to help them make an educated decision about whether or not to do it
. . . .

As far as I know she's the only "professional" who ever reads these submissions,
and even with that she said on one occasion that if a script gets enough bad
reviews she doesn't even bother reading it.  After having spent three weeks with
this group, I would strongly recommended that no serious playwright ever
remotely consider this contest. And while I am sympathetic that this would mean
losing another venue in a constantly depleting collection of outlets, I believe
the practices which her group employ require this action.

Hopefully this will help other people out there looking for a place to submit.
Thanks for your time.

Hello Everyone,

You folks know Atlanta a LOT better than I do. Are there any theaters that like,
seek out, or encourage new musicals? I'm trying to figure out where to pitch my
new musical comedy and the right theater would be one with an audience that
might enjoy "The Full Monty," "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Spring
Awakening," or "La Cage aux Folles." In other words, a fun show with a bit of
sex appeal.

Thanks for your help.

August marked my third year as Managing Artistic Director of Working
Title Playwrights and while it's been a lot of hard work, it's been a
lot of fun, too, especially when I get to introduce a remarkable new
play by a dynamic playwright.

WTP's Ethel Woolson Lab presents John Drago's THE BIRDWATCHERS at
Academy Theatre, Sept. 26, 2009, 2 p.m.

A parable about the inevitable confrontation between the beauty and the
horror of life, THE BIRDWATCHERS tells the story of a mother's
struggle to accept the death of her beloved though estranged son, driven
from the family home in small-town Georgia some time ago by an
unyielding daughter desperate for her own salvation from addiction. When
a stranger from Atlanta arrives bearing the shattering news of the
boy's death, and describing a classical form of divination wherein
the behavior of the birds is used to understand the will of the gods, a
chain of events is set in motion which forces the family to face the
evil, awful things both in the world and at home. A doppelganger of the
lost boy, an unexpected gift from the past, and a sudden accumulation of
birds in the front yard lead mother and daughter to a devastating
explosion of irrevocable lies and the ultimate destruction of the
boy's sainted memory.

This workshop reading is directed by Melissa Foulger, dramaturgy by
Addae Moon and performed by Daniel Burnley, Clifton Guterman, Megan
Hayes and Jo Howarth. A talkback moderated by Betty Hart will

Heaven on Earth by Robert Schenkkan
Directed by Jason Caldwell

Bobby lives with his maternal grandmother, Martha, in Waylon, Texas, where not
much goes on and work is hard to come by. Martha has worked for thirty years in
the local beauty shop, and has raised Bobby since her daughter and son-in-law's
death in a car accident, which Bobby, as a young boy, survived. Even after he'd
grown and moved away, Bobby returns to Martha after financial failures in a
drunken stupor. It is always a tough living arrangement since Martha maintains
an
incredible optimism and total belief in God, and Bobby rejects God and religion,
is always pessimistic and remains angry over his parents' death. They must come
to an understanding that believing in themselves and each other will make their
lives full again.

Working Title Playwrights presents a First Draft On Demand reading of
Sylvia Davenport-Veith's SURVIVING OURSELVES.

It's August, 1968 in Castile Beach, Florida and a hurricane is coming
everyone's way. Aurora Mars, a bitter southern beauty now stricken
with terminal cancer, is determined to preserve her battered beach club
bar, The Aurora. Her daughter, Cassandra, is equally committed to
saving the club. But, tensions ensue when Aurora's sister, Selene,
arrives from Georgia with her son, Manny. As always, the presence of
Chase Atwater (Selene's recently deceased husband and Aurora's former
lover) infects the sisters like a running sore. Did Selene drive Chase
to suicide as Aurora believes? Or was he murdered by his own son,
Manny? And why does Cyrus, Aurora's husband, hate the club so much and
drown himself in drink? Cassandra's journey toward the truth about her
family is set against a gathering storm. She has to face it all alone
unless she is willing to take Ben Winfield back into her life.

This FDOD reading will attempt to help the author turn her screenplay
SURVIVING OURSELVES into a stage play. With Shayne Kohout, Jo Howarth,
Allen Hagler, Peter Hardy, Ellen McQueen, David Quay, and more. A
talkback will immediately follow the reading. Audience participation is
greatly appreciated by the playwright.
