Subject: Question to the Group on WSJTx
w8lig
Send Email Send Email

Has anyone experienced issues keying their radio on modes other than JT9-1? I'm
using a Kenwood TS-480HX here in FL and mode 1 workes just fine. Mode 2 keys the
transmitter immediately and won't release. Higher modes will not key the
transmitter at all.

This is using the same settings (other than the mode) that works just fine with
Mode 1.

Any feedback?

Hi Larry,

I have been trying to draw attention to this problem for at least a month now.
So in a way I am glad you experience this as well.

The fact that many are using audio driven ( VOX ) T/R switching makes that not
many WSJTx And WSPRx ( sane problem ) users are aware
of this problem.

I have contacted K1JT twice about it, but the answer is that at K1JT is seems to
be working.

I have been contacting others of which I know they are not using audio driven
T/R switching and gotten the same reports as you give.

At my station I have tried it on 3 different computers and 2 laptops and in all
cases the same behavior. All WINXP SP3 machines

It might help if you report the problem to K1JT, I do not seem to have the
credibility in reporting the problem.

Bottom line is JT9-1 and 2 work fine, JT9-5 and longer does not switch the com
port , audio generation ( tiones ) is fine

WSPRx-2 working WSPRx-15 same problem with com port switching and audio working
as it should.

I agree. Look forward to a JT9-1 QSO with you soon, Mack; yesterday I decoded
your CQ.

As a former JT65-HF user may I make a couple of suggestions?

1. Double-clicking anywhere on a decode line should put the DX callsign into DX
Call. At present you have to click on the call, clicking anywhere else puts
whatever you clicked on into that box, even if it isn't a call. I've got my own
call in there and have ended up replying to myself! I've seen others make the
same mistake too.

2. Double-clicking on a decode line should set the TX frequency to match the
frequency of that transmission. If you increase TOL to a larger value, say 200,
you can have multiple decodes in a period. You then have to enter that call into
the box and also click on the Wide Graph window to set the TX frequency, and you
can easily click on the wrong trace in your hurry to do it before the clock
reaches 0.

This behaviour is what JT65-HF did and I believe that it would make WSJTX easier
to use.

qso using JT65HF. Power levels can be reduced and signals are easily  decoded at
-25 db levels.

wsjt 9.3.r2792 update is available for debian & ubuntu linux:

debian download (near the bottom of the page):
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/hamradio/wsjt

ubuntu versions 12.04, 12.10, 13.04:
https://launchpad.net/~jnogatch/+archive/wsjt9

The older package wsjt 5.9.7.r383 had several problems, e.g. it would show a
window briefly and then crash:
     Audio.gcom2.hiscall=(ToRadio.get()+'            ')[:12]
ValueError: could not convert string to float: W8WN

Getting the packaging correct is not easy. Kamal KA6MAL provided much expert
help. We hope this helps other linux users to run wsjt.

As a JT65HF user, I second your suggestions Julian. I did the same thing, clicked and sent a transmission to myself. These are worthy of consideration in my opinion.

Mack (W4ENN), while your comments on WSJTx have merit, until you can get multiple decodes like JT65HF has, IMHO it does not do everything that JT65HF does. My experience has been that I'm lucky if I see more than one station on the waterfall in most cases. I think two or three at most during any session I've been on. So things like Julian suggested would be enhancments that might generate more interest in using the program.

I know Laurie has been approached to consider writing JT-Alerts for WSJTx and he has stated that when usage increases, he would be open to doing it. These enhancements would be a step in that direction.

Thank you very much John (and Kamal), have been waiting for this for a
long time indeed - (and having had to resort to running the Win versions
under Wine for the past year or so) - now if we could only get WSJTX and
especially WSPR also?

Just bought the IC-9100.

Need opinion as to what digital interfaces are working well with this radio.

I've been using Microham Microkeyers with my PROIII and IC-910H.

I see that the Microham stuff is now 499.00...great stuff but ouch for an interface.

Opinions?

It seems the ARRL is digging in its heels and refusing to recognize JT-9 as a
acceptable mode. I have made several JT-9 contacts and would like LotW to at
least admit I had the QSO.

I have created a script to alter the mode from JT-9 to "data" before submitting
them to LotW but I have had many of them kicked back as "No Match".

So, what are we supposed to submit a JT-9 contact as?

Fred,

I use HRD Log and use the Modes Edit menu to upload as an ADIF of type DATA and have never had a JT9 contact bounced back. I believe that you can also edit the .TQ8 (I believe that is the LOTW file on your local PC) to translate JT9 to DATA. If you are using another logging program, it might have similar capabilities. I spoke with the head LOTW guru at ARRL HQ a few months ago and I would not hold your breath on getting LOTW to recognize JT9. I have received a number of matches using DATA for my approximately 120 JT9 contacts.

Same with QSPK contacts, even though it is a different mode (QPSK31 through QPSK125) they recognize it as DATA. You can map them within your LoTW account but they won’t be counted as JT9 L.

Hi Mack,

I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

I have found a few other users of JT9-5 and above as well as WSPR-x - 15 having
the same problem.

As a matter of fact I have the problem here as well.

Amateurs, able to use it, are all using some form of audio activated T/R
switching. ( Rig blasters, etc ) and
no straight RS-232 activation. As far as I have found at least.

It is only the com port, the generation audio is working fine. Hope this helps.

Hello All,

I am just wondering whether this problem is the or a reason why JT9 is slow in
being used by the WSJT community?
It is really hard to find users outside a small group so far, while the mode is
excellent, in mu=y opinion at least.

Hi All,

Do not know what is going on with JT9-1 activity today, some publication or
conditions?

I had the receiver running with a 500 Hz Tol window this morning
and logged the following stations:
Ki1J
IK3SCB
G6WZA
GM3NZX
W4SR
UA1NAN
RA3TAT
W6NT
F8RZ
WB4KDI
OK2EA
EA3AQS
DJ9GS
LY2CV
K7SWW
UU9JQ
RA9XQ
KC2RDC
N2LQ
G4ILO
WB2HTO
WU9Q
M0TXS
KF7JQF

About 15:00 to 17:00 UTC recorded calls ( perhaps some typo's )

Looks a lot like 14076 with WSJT65A-RF!

Quite nice. I have seen and worked a number of these stations
but so far never seen the density!

Hello Ed,

At 14078 kHz ( 20 m ) Most JT9-1 bands are 2 kHz above the WSJT frequencies. (
xx.076 kHz )
1839.5 for 160 m
Activity is from 160 m up to 10 m.

Rein,

Maybe the recent QST article coupled with people finding out the efficiency of JT9 has activity up.
Very encouraging to see more using this narrow bandwidth mode.

Steinar,

Now that I am at it, there is another problem.

Going back to WSJT becoming popular, there was the JT-logger:

   http://www.chris.org/cgi-bin/jt65talk (1)

This site played a big roll ( all in my opinion ) in scheduling, experimenting,
assisting, etc with HF WSJT.

I learned about WSJT on HF because I often visited the EME site:

   http://www.chris.org/cgi-bin/jt65emeA (2)

asking myself waht are they talking about?

Due to the lack of HF users , (1) has become like an overflow site for ( 2 )
95% EME related converations.

There is also K3UK's site of course but it is not that well known:

   http://www.obriensweb.com/sked/index.php?board=digitalradio

Through the day there is a fair amount of JT9 related traffic going on there.

Also testing, reporting and helping.

Hope this will help

73 Rein W6SZ

Anyone is trying new wsjt-x program in Linux?

I have compiled it on my Ubuntu 12.04 but I have some trouble with sound
devices. No devices in setup window and, forcing a device number in wsjt.ini, I
get core dump due to Input overflow
