Subject: Unable to decode JT65A well

When JT65A first became available several years ago I used it with great
success. Then I went on to other modes and stopped using it. I came back to it
about a year ago but for the life of me I haven't been able to get it to
function so I guess it is time to ask for help.

I cannot get the program to decode any more than about 5% of transmissions
making qsos impossible. I set gain to 0db, use an xp computer with 2.0 gig
processor, and an FT-897D transceiver. I have tried strong signals, weak signals
and in between. The program just does not want to copy JT65A signals though it
does decode a very few which makes this very peculier. I have tried different
settings and went through the bozo guide several times with no success.

Any suggestions or assistance as to why this is happening is much appreciated.

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

#1 Make sure your clock is correct, to the second. I use Dimension 4 to do that.

#2 Make sure you don't have any audio processing taking place, in the radio or computer. The audio
should be flat, no bass or treble boost.

Good luck, John - kc2rxs

If you're only using JT65A, W6CQZ's JT65-HF software is much easier to
use than WSJT and provides a multi-decoder. You must, of course, pay the
same careful attention the clock, sound card timing, and setting audio
levels between the radio and the computer. The only thing that JT65-HF
lacks is the "deep search" function that compares the received signal to
a database of callsigns and expected exchanges to copy signals about 2dB
deeper into the noise.

It has also been my experience that digital modes benefit GREATLY from a
decent (but not expensive) USB sound card. The Tascam US122 is a
particularly good buy.

Ollie,

I had the same problem when going to a new old computer. Old puter correction
was .9788, which in fact did not work. I followed Jim K9YCs advice and put a
Tascam US 122 mkII usb soundcard on it and voila! One caveat--use the latest
driver AND firmware from the Tascam site. Mine would not work without them. A
plus on this card are nice big knobs for adjusting gain. I think my correction
now is. 9998, which is pretty damn good for a $70 card.

Is WSPR decoding too intensive for low power processors? Does it require
floating point? Has anyone written a decoder for a micro, DSP or FPGA? I am
just wonder how difficult it would be to make a low-power receiver/decoder. I
guess an embedded Linux solution is possible.

Thanks.

Yes, that is possible.
I have WSPR running on a pandaboard and on a raspberry pi.

it does require a FPU; so non-FPU ARM systems are out of the question.

This may have ben posted here already but I could noit find it when I searched.
New install was crashing because I misconfigured the sound options.
When I ran wsjt from the command line I could see the error.
But I had difficulty knowing where the application stored it's user data at.
Re-installing the application did not help.
I finally found it and manually modifed the text file.
On win7 it is located in:
C:\Users\sdl\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\WSJT9

Note that "sdl" is the user name.

Hi Steve and all,

A better course of action is to follow the advice in the WSJT 9.0
Supplement to User's Guide:
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/WSJT_9.0_Supplement.pdf .

Install WSJT in a directory such as C:\HamRadio\WSJT9. Then everything
related to WSJT will be in a single, easy-to-find location.

Kristoff answered a rather different question from the one that was asked.

Can the existing source code for WSPR (e.g., taken from the SVN
repository) be compiled for a system without floating-point support?

    NO.

Could a decoder for the WSPR protocol be written for a processor that
has only only fixed-point arithmetic?

YES (but it would be a major programming job).

I was thinking about how to detect WSPR stations with > 2 sec clock error (DT)?
Here are two possible ways.

Record 4 minutes of audio, then

1. Widen sync signal search
Search for a best fit DT and DF across the entire recording. The current sync162
imposes a narrow search. Perhaps that is not essential. (Is there any reason
candidate MEPT_JT sync signals cannot be extracted from a long record?) After
collecting the candidates, decode based on each candidate and look for valid
records.

2. Sliding window
Use a 2-minute sliding window in 2-second steps. Apply the standard code to each
window, then look for valid records. Doing this quickly would require a
multicore implementation. There would be 120 2-second steps. If each decode
takes about 5 seconds, the complete search would take 10 minutes on a single
processor. With an 8 core CPU, 2 processes per core, decode would take about 38
seconds. (Real-time would require porting to something like a Nvidia Tesla GPU.)

Method #2 could be tested using the existing code. A recorded audio could be
chopped up and then fed to the wspr command line. (I would use Matlab, although
there may be more audio-specific programs that could do this as well.) It will
be interesting to see how many stations are transmitting out of time spec. Using
the calculations from above, 4 hours of recordings can be processed in about 10
hours on a regular PC. You could also use the same dataset to track stations
that start out within +/- 1 sec UTC, but drift with time.

Hi Group,

On Sept. 17th I will be presenting a seminar on getting started with WSJT MS to
the BITTERROOT AMATEUR RADIO CLUB in Hamilton, Mt (DN26wf). There are usually
20+ amateurs present. Some of these Hams live in rare grids like DN25 and DN35.
It would be great to have regular VHF stations operating there!

After the presentation, I will have a station setup for live demonstration
period. I am asking for many of you to saturate the calling frequency all at the
same time. Use an offset and we'll come work you. The time for live should be
about 8PM MTN (0200GMT). We will be listening on 50.260 for callers. Please use
2nd sequence as I will start calling 1st seq. I will also post on PJ as soon as
we start to CQ.

I hope you see the need for adding to our ranks. Here is your opportunity to
help if you are within about 800 miles or QRO at up to 1200 miles.

Just in case Es are occurring, I will transmit the message "QRP" if someone is
over saturating us.

Thanks to all in advance and please contact me with questions or to confirm that
you will be transmitting.

Dear Gang:

I am trying to get a new old computer running as my shack computer.  It is a Sony Vaio with Centrino Duo 1.6 GHz I think.  The sound card is awful.  WSJT shows it running at .9795

This computer runs WSPR without a problem, but when I run either WSJT, or especially JT65-HF, no one can decode me even with the sampling rate correction entered in--although I can decode some but not all stations I see on the WSPR screen.  When I use a Tascam 122 MkII external USB soundcard, WSJT and JT65-HF both work fine, but then no one can decode me in WSPR.  I have checked everything I can think of.  I ran WSPR for a number of hours on multiple bands with the Tascam soundcard and no one ever decoded me.  I switched to the native soundcard and in 10 minutes I saw uploaded spots.  The WSJT and JT65 situation is exactly the reverse.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric WD6DBM

I am getting runtime errors on 9.0 Getting this on FSK441 and JT65. I am
running the program from a separate folder, not from Program Files.

My PC is a Pentium 2.4 ghz, 480M ram and XP-SP3

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Tnx, Lloyd K8DIO

I have been monitoring 28.140 for several hours, beam pointed towards
Europe. Have heard many odd signals, including MS pings of some sort but
nothing identifiable as ISCAT. Will keep looking for a while yet.

Thanks for the FSK QSOs during last weekend's ARRL VHF contest.

I had operated during the CQ contest and taken advantage of Ping Jockey as
allowed by the CQ rules. Despite not being able to use PJ for the ARRL contest
I made more QSOs.

These QSOs have been uploaded to LOTW from K6EU/R so you will need to specify
K6EU/R to get a match. LOTW will not match if you upload with K6EU as the call.

Tom K6EU aka K6EU/R
