A coworker and I did some wandering in the Forest today cehcking on the holiday weekend visitors. In the process...
We saw a willet at Overland Reservoir in Delta County, elevation just under 10,000 feet. It was flying around and lit on the dam at one point. Never seen one up that high.
We saw a Swainson's hawk just east of there, in one of the open parks.
We saw a baby snowshoe bunny sitting at the side of the road. Everyone say: "awwwwww"
When checking on some campers, one of them asked if we were interested in seeing a hummingbird nest. The nest was in a low branch of a spruce hanging over a creek. About ankle high from the campsite, maybe two feet over the creek. Photo hopefully at www.photobucket.com/paoniabirds and on the BCAS blog sometime in the next hour.
Also, we saw numerous small groups of purple martins along the 265 road and the 701 road in the NE part of Delta County.
Yesterday, while doing roughly the same thing, I saw a three-toed woodpecker on a roadside tree about 1/2 mile west of the top of Kebler Pass on Gunnison County Road 12. Beware of holiday traffic.
Happy birding.
