Robinson Flats, Michigan Bluff, Foresthill, Highway49, No Hands Bridge and Robie
Point are easy access and most popular. Duncan Canyon, Dusty Corners, Bath Road
and Green Gate are additional aide stations where crew are allowed but are more
difficult to get to and some require up to 2 miles of hiking in.

If no one is available to drive our rental car from Squaw to Auburn or
Foresthill, would someone be willing to cart our bags (one each plus backpack)
to Auburn/Foresthill from Squaw so we can forego the rental car completely?
Thanks. jtholl@... 901-229-0256. Any help is appreciated.

Ever wonder about the cost of a helicopter ride out of the high country during
the race? One of the ways to address those concerns is membership in CALSTAR -
California Shock Trauma Air Rescue.

http://www.calstar.org/

CALSTAR III is based in Auburn and is one of the helicopters missioned to
respond to emergencies in the region.

Even if you don't need their services, I've always felt they are a good
organization to support due to their mission. Membership is good for a year -
$40 individual / $45 for the entire family.

All the videos in YouTube show runners in singlet and shorts both at the start,

Just because there is snow on the ground doesn't mean it is cold. Last
year, we ran the first 10-miles in the snow and the air temperature was
around 80-deg F. Even though the race starts at 5am, the sun rises almost
immediately. A good rule of thumb is that whenever the sun it up, plan on
it being HOT. In my experience, the only time you need to worry about being
warm is during the night, especially if you are doing a lot of walking.
Last year it was warm enough all night that shorts were just fine. However,
it can get cold at night, so I always have long pants and a jacket in my
drop bag at Foresthill to use just in case. The only other thing I would
say is that you can get cold if it is raining. I have a bunch of those
small (and cheap) emergency ponchos that I stick in every drop bag just in
case a storm comes up.

The biggest issue from the snow last year (for me, at least) was wet feet.
Even once we got out of the snow, all of the streams were high and we were
constantly crossing water where it was nearly impossible to keep your feet
dry. There is only so much you can do, but if it looks like a big snow year
(and it does, at this point), bring as many shoes as you can. As a minimum,
have a change of shoes (and socks!) at Robinson Flat and another at
Foresthill.

My maximum pace for 30 miles (48 km) is ~8 min / mile (5 min/km) (~ 3,000 feet

Best thing is to show up at Foresthill about 3:30 - 4PM and sign up as a
volunteer pacer. Volunteers will pace runners coming through on a first
come first serve basis. Any runner coming through who needs a pacer makes
the request and the volunteers are tapped to pace in the order they sign up.
I did that one year - was second in line to pace, and helped a guy from Ohio
get in under 24 hours.

If you decide to pace a particular person they may or may not have the kind
of day you are hoping for or they may even drop. By volunteering you are
guaranteed a person to pace.

Just my opinion.

Cheers,

Joe

They just posted due to snow above the course for first day will be a repeat out
n back over areas usually covered on sunday so you won't see snow and it looks
like partly cloudy and in the 70s for w/e and the Cal loop can get a bit humid.
Nothing like the heat you'll get by race day! Shorts and drifit short sleeve
will do fine.

Highs of 70-75 in Foresthill and Auburn area, lows of 50 or so overnight.

So I'm flying in from Alabama for the camp, just heard that we are NOT going to
be able to run the canyons? Alternate is back thru Foresthill to Michigan Bluff
and return. Anyone interested in tacking on a little extra and heading down to
El Dorado Ck and back? I mean, prime reason I roll to the camp is to work the
big climbs (not quite something you can replicate here in N. Alabama).

Does anyone know where the run will be on Saturday. The email update says "The
alternate course will run from the top of Driver's Flat Road to Foresthill (Cal
Street in reverse), then on to Michigan Bluff. The runners will turn around at
Michigan Bluff and return to Foresthill for the finish. Total distance 30.6

On the WS 100 guidebook cutoff chart, there is only 6 miles between Michigan
Bluff and Foresthill. Do it twice, that's 12 miles. Where is the other 18
miles on "Driver's Flat Road".

I am from the East Coast, so I am not familiar with the area.

From Driver's Flat to Rucky Chucky Near it is ~ 2 miles.
From Rucky Chucky Near to MB it is 22.3 miles.
From MB to Foresthill it is 6.3 miles.

That comes out to around 30.6 miles.

Josh,
I'm a local and run the WSER every weekend (I know, lucky dog). To avoid the
crowds and if you want some quad busting canyons, well we're running MB thru
Devil's Thumb to Last Chance and back (26 miles) - a little training we like to
call "4xHell" 'cause we get to go up and down the two toughest canyons twice.
I'll be driving thru FH on my way to park at MB if you need a ride. We're
planning a 7am start if you'd like to join us. best to email me at
imbc@.... Bob C.

to be able to run the canyons? Alternate is back thru Foresthill to Michigan
Bluff and return. Anyone interested in tacking on a little extra and heading
down to El Dorado Ck and back? I mean, prime reason I roll to the camp is to
work the big climbs (not quite something you can replicate here in N. Alabama).

might experience? I know about the snow, but I don't know about what type of
temperature differentials we might go through and I don't want to be
underprepared.
