Maybe somebody who knows WS will buy it and donate it
back to the race - that seems to be the only fitting
end to this saga (seems to be part of an estate sale).

It is an old buckle. Old design, back when they were round, and had a
runner, not a cougar on it. I'm sure there is a story behind it, and how it
ended up coming out of an estate in NY..

I have a question I am sure someone on this list can answer for me.
I'm the endurance rider who finished Tevis with my horse in 2005. I
have little knowledge of what it takes to run long distance, but try
to understand products etc. that y'all use, and apply to a long day
on the trail with my horse as needed. Anyway, a discussion of a rider
craving coke during an endurance ride came up on a riding list, and
many said how bad coke was for them on a long hot day when working
their bodies hard. I commented that I see coke at all the aid
stations on a 50 mile run I volunteer at here in TX, (The Grasslands
Run) and how many runners come in from the trail, WANTING the soda,
and not juice etc.

So, can someone share with my why coke, when a sugar crash can
happen, it is a diuretic and can dehydrate etc. etc. ?? Feel free to
reply direct, as I'm sure this is not of much interest to the folks
on the list. ;-)

And good luck to those training for this years WS100. I would love to
go to Tevis every year. I LOVE that trail!!!

Jonni,

To address the Coke issue, it is important to understand how our
bodies are fueled during endurance events. Energy is stored in three
forms: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The most efficient energy
comes from carbohydrates (i.e., glycogen/sugar). However, after
about 4-6 hours of running, the body depletes itself of carbohydrates
and begins to use fat as the primary fuel source. The problem here
is that the body cannot metabolize fat as efficiently, thus requiring
the runner to slow down significantly (i.e., hitting the wall).

To avoid this "wall", the endurance runner must focus on taking in as
much carbohydrates as possible once the run begins. Since you want
the carbs to get where they are needed quickly, what we typically
recognize as "bad" carbs in an everyday diet (candy, sugar, cookies,
soda) become "good" carbs during an endurance run. This is because
the body can very quickly metabolize these more refined products.

Keeping up on carbs is helpful, but it is difficult to make it
through a 100-mile race without becomeing somewhat depleted. Thus,
it is also desirable to speed up the fat metabolization process.
Most studies show that the best substance to accomplish this is
caffeine. Following this logic, Coke provides a double punch of
sugar and caffeine that can help the body metabolize what it needs
for endurance running.

As for the sugar crash, when you are running a 100-miles, a crash can
happen at any minute if you don't keep up with the carbs. Slow-
metabolizing carbs (brown rice, fruit) actually promote a crash more
than the fast metabolizing carbs (candy, sugar, Coke) because the
body is running on overload. The Coke reaches your system much
faster and can thus keep off the crash as long as you keep up the
fast carbs.

The issue of caffeine being a diuretic is probably the toughest for
people to deal with. The key thing here is to note that the
dehydrating effect of running 100-miles is an order of magnitude
greater than the dehydrating effect of caffeine. No one in their
right mind would ONLY drink Coke during an endurance event. The
average person will sweat 4-gallons of fluid during a 100-mile run
and must attempt to replace most of that during the event or suffer
serious dehydration. The diuretic effects of caffeine are almost
negligible when dealing with exertion at this level.

As a side note, most participants in a 100-mile run end up staying
awake for one or two days without sleep, so there are certainly other
reasons why we crave caffeine ...

Hope this helps!

- Patrick McCartney

Thanks everyone for the great info on why coke is something I've seen the ultra
runners drink out there on the trail. Y'all have a great spring time training,
and hope some of you get to do the WS100. I'd love to make it out for Tevis, but
will have to see how the planning and $$$ goes. I do love that trail, and think
about it probably way too much!

Hey y'all. Just back from volunteering at Tevis, and have a question
maybe one of you might be able to help. This year we put a wristband on
each rider, and wrote their entry number on it. In case they were hurt,
at least we would know "who" they were. Do any runs use wristbands for
ID, that have more info, such as emergency. phone numbers, allergies,
full name etc. ?? I know they have machines that can print out a
computerized wristband for hospital use, but not sure of something more
portable, to be able to use at an event. Love any ideas y'all might
have, as we feel that we need to have better ID systems in place on
rides like Tevis.
Thanks so much.

The WS 100 has used wrist band from the beginning. They record
vital information, including starting weights (losing % of weight is
a criteria for getting pulled). Only the aid station captain
can "cut" the band which means the runner is officially
stopped/pulled. Failure to do so means the runner is DQ in the
future.

2008 Tevis Cup Ride has been CANCELLED
Based upon our face to face meeting with the US Forest Service today,
the Tevis Cup Ride has been cancelled due to increased fire risks
along the North Fork of the Divide. Foresthill Road will remain closed
based upon the threat for at least two weeks. While the USFS was
willing to work with us to allow access to the trail via Mosquito
Ridge, it was decided, due to the logistical problems and safety
issues using this route, this was not a feasible option. A full
statement will will be issued later.

Greetings WS100'ers from northwest PA! I wanted to let everyone know
about a new trail race I'm organizing in northwest PA called the Oil
Creek 100 Trail Runs <http://oilcreek100.org/> . We will be holding the
inaugural trail races on the same weekend - Oct 10th & 11th 2009 - so
that runners, hikers and walkers alike can participate at some distance
due to the generous cut-off times:

     * 10Kish (distance TBD) for solo & 4 person team races, fun run, and
hike - no time limit

     * 50K - 12 hour time limit = 23:11 / mile pace

     * 50 mile - 32 hour time limit = 38:24 / mile

     * 100 mile - 32 hour time limit = 19:12 / mile

There will be a pre-race pasta dinner and meeting - with lots of door
prizes and race bag goodies provided by our national sponsors
<http://www.oilcreek100.org/Home/sponsors> Montrail, Hammer Nutrition,
Nathan HPL, CW-X Conditioning Wear, Teva, La Sportiva, Trail Runner
magazine, ZombieRunner.com, Kahtoola MICROspikes, McDonalds, Culligan
water, and Road ID - for the ultra runners on Friday Oct 9th.

Please see our race website at OilCreek100.org <http://oilcreek100.org/>
or OC100.org <http://oc100.org/> . This is one trail race you won't want
to miss if you are looking to add PA to your list of ultra challenges.
Most of the race will be on the rugged single-track Gerard Hiking Trail
of historic Oil Creek State Park
<http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/oilcreek/oilcreek_history.\
aspx> , located between Titusville
<http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Titusville&state=PA> and Oil City,
PA, about 40 southeast of Erie PA and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from
Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo. You will be running with the ghosts
of the 1860's oil wildcatters as the world's first oil boom started here
when Colonel Edwin Drake drilled the first commercial oil well in 1859.

Race HQ will be at the new and modern Titusville Middle School (pending
final insurance approval) and showers will be available all weekend long
for runners, pacers and crew for a nominal fee of $5 to cover the
school's custodial staff that will be onhand all weekend.

The finisher's award belt buckle - a large, heavy and high-quality
buckle from Creative Castings Inc in Denison TX - should be finalized
this week so visit our race website during the next week to see the
artists rendition. Same buckle will be awarded but with different
finishes for each ultra distance: gold / two-tone for the 100 miler,
silver finish for the 50 milers, and bronze (antique brass) for the 50K
finishers.

In just 19 days since its launch the race website has had visits from
1,100 different / unique runners from 15 countries.

I hope to see you in October - bring your friends or spouse as there
will be a distance for everyone to enjoy. Your 10K / 50K friends can
finish their race and then crew or pace another friend on the 50 or 100
mile race.

I know there will be a bus at 3pm to return people to the start to pick up the
cars - it is $40

I was wondering if most or many people WAIT until 3pm and make use of this.

Or if it will be relatively easy to get a ride back ( which i do not see how).

I "assume" that the racers that have a support crew will not be interested to
give a 1-1.5hrs (each way) ride in the opposite direction of Sacramento

I just want to make sure there is no other way to get to the start to pick up
the cars .... something earlier in the day

Robinson Flats, Michigan Bluff, Foresthill, Highway49, No Hands Bridge and Robie
Point are easy access and most popular. Duncan Canyon, Dusty Corners, Bath Road
and Green Gate are additional aide stations where crew are allowed but are more
difficult to get to and some require up to 2 miles of hiking in.

Ever wonder about the cost of a helicopter ride out of the high country during
the race? One of the ways to address those concerns is membership in CALSTAR -
California Shock Trauma Air Rescue.

http://www.calstar.org/

CALSTAR III is based in Auburn and is one of the helicopters missioned to
respond to emergencies in the region.

Even if you don't need their services, I've always felt they are a good
organization to support due to their mission. Membership is good for a year -
$40 individual / $45 for the entire family.

How is the training going for 2010? At this point, 3 months out, how many mile
are you putting in? What kind of miles? How active is this group? Is there
any other group or forum on the web for the WS100 that is more active?

I'm looking for someone to help crew and/or pace a friend of mine this year.
Sarah Lowell has finished WS before (and Badwater and Susitna), so I'm sure
she'll finish. She has lots of experience and would be a great person to spend
time with. Contact me off-line if you have questions or can help. Thx! - Stan
