I need a pacer, male or female for the Western. I am hoping to finish in 27
hours. I could use someone from ForestHill or from Green Gate. I need
someone who can talk and tell me stories and keep me moving. If you can
sing that is a real plus also. Actually I will appreciate anyone willing
and able.

Dale,

If you did not get a pacer as a result of this message, you might try

Ill be crewing at Dusty Corners then swapping pace duty at Green Gate.
Is it easy to coordinate rides on race day or is it too hectic? Id
like to leave my truck in Auburn and hitch to Green Gate/Cool. Will
this be dificult since access is limited to Green Gate and it will
likely be late at night?

Need driver to drive my car from Squaw Valley to Robinson. I am the
safety patrol/sweep coordinator for this first section and have a
pass to park the car at Robinson Flat thus bypassing the shuttle
service. Will give you a safety patrol shirt as well.

Now that the run is over, can anyone report on the trail conditions
this year? Especially the high country? My horse and I are entered in
the ride, and just curious as to how "bad" the bogs etc. will be?
Thanks so much,

Jonni, I know Tevis starts near Truckee but I don't know where
you enter our course- maybe near Lyon's Ridge??? Anyway, for
WS, once over the peak at Squaw, the area to Lyon's Ridge is
pretty spotty with snow. You can go a few hundred yards with
snow and then another few hundred yards with no snow- with the
snow being in the shadier areas. Where there is snow it is
quite thick but very icy due to the constant heating and
cooling. It's quite dangerous. Most of this should melt by
Tevis. There's also a lot of water from the snow melt. From
Lyon's to Red Star, the snow is very patchy. There is snow
along side of the trail by Elephant's trunk and Cougar Rock.
The brief patches are icy and are usually located where
there is not much sun (slope areas with tree that only get
partial sun). There are also several tree down blocking the
trail but one of our safety patrol volunteers gave this
information on the location to one of the Tevis people at the
race (Bill Johnson) and he is notifying the forest service.
The sectioin from Red Star to Robinson also has snow (and
trees). There is little snow in the first 3 miles to Robinson
but the snow get more pronounced and thicker the closer you
get to Robinson. Not real icy though. Being on Soda Spring
Rd, I think most of this will be gone by Tevis as well but if
not, horses should have no problem going through whatever
snow is remaining. Hope this helps.

Jonnie,

I ran the race.
You should not have any problem. Most of the snow
should be gone by Tevis. It will be muddy though. Hope
your horse don't mind that...

I don't know who did it, but I want to thank the kind soul who went over
the snow section of WS this year and put in footholds along the climbs and
poured dirt along certain sections for improved traction. It was much
appreciated by all of us I am sure.

Wow, thanks so much for the great details Glenn! The Tevis trail
crosses at 89 and the Truckee river, and then along a hiking trail
along the South slope of Squaw Valley. The trail re-connects with the
historic route about a mile short of Watson's Monument. We ride up
the service road under the ski lifts to the top. I thought that the
trail was pretty much the same for the run and ride, but somewhere
the runners do more miles between Squaw and Auburn, that the riders
don't, as we have about 8 miles of trail before we get to 89 and the
Truckee River.

This has been such a weird weather year, and hopefully it will stay
warm enough to melt off most of the snow before the ride. But then we
will have the nasty bogs and mud through Granite Chief. This will be
my 3rd attempt, and hopefully it will be "3rd times the charm".
Getting a horse ready in the "flats" of Texas has been tough, so I
took the horse out to CA for his last conditioning. (and MY
conditioning)

Congrads to all those who did the run, and thanks to all volunteers
who go out and help at these events so WE can participate.

Jonni, good luck to you. I was the sweeper for the run so I
had plenty of time to check out the conditions. Hopefully
most of the snow will be gone but there's going to be areas
where, because of the runoff, that it's going to be wet.

Just a quick note, before I sign off the list.

First, thanks again to all the runners who gave me trail reports after
the WS100. The high country was not bad at all (in my mind) for the
ride. We had a great time, and Hank and I finished with about half an
hour to spare!!! Now I am back in Texas, already longing to be in the

For those who come out to the Grasslands run in Decatur TX, I ride
sweep each year after the last runner on the 50 miler. Come say howdy!

Hello all,

I am in the race this year (as long as the doc clears me for my

near the start. My wife and I like to (tent) camp, so I thought this
area would be great for that; my question is how is camping in that
area (availability, cost, safety of the area, etc.)? Any information
will be greatly appreciated (I notice the only other posts are

LOTS of poison oak hanging into the trails in the canyons and for sure
beyond. last 20 especially. my legs are still trashed (from poison
oak) from memorial day weekend... but it was worth it... awesome
trails! even got snowed and sleeted and rained on in the canyons...
now who would ever predict hypothermia in the canyons! :) ha ha! at
that time, couldn't get too far up past dusty corners due to snow, but
i'm sure it's much better now. cheers and happy riding!

Hi Everyone,

I am running Safety Patrol at Western States this year
from Squaw Valley to Robinson Flat. This entails
starting with the runners from SV and means leaving my
car behind there as well. I am hoping to find someone
to drive it to Foresthill (or at least Auburn) so I
don't have to go 2 days without my car and my stuff.
If anyone out there could kindly drive it (97 Honda
Accord 5sp), please email me. I would greatly
appreciate it. I will also be at SV Thursday and
Friday.

Thanks in advance,

It is an old buckle. Old design, back when they were round, and had a
runner, not a cougar on it. I'm sure there is a story behind it, and how it
ended up coming out of an estate in NY..

I have a question I am sure someone on this list can answer for me.
I'm the endurance rider who finished Tevis with my horse in 2005. I
have little knowledge of what it takes to run long distance, but try
to understand products etc. that y'all use, and apply to a long day
on the trail with my horse as needed. Anyway, a discussion of a rider
craving coke during an endurance ride came up on a riding list, and
many said how bad coke was for them on a long hot day when working
their bodies hard. I commented that I see coke at all the aid
stations on a 50 mile run I volunteer at here in TX, (The Grasslands
Run) and how many runners come in from the trail, WANTING the soda,
and not juice etc.

So, can someone share with my why coke, when a sugar crash can
happen, it is a diuretic and can dehydrate etc. etc. ?? Feel free to
reply direct, as I'm sure this is not of much interest to the folks
on the list. ;-)

And good luck to those training for this years WS100. I would love to
go to Tevis every year. I LOVE that trail!!!

Jonni,

To address the Coke issue, it is important to understand how our
bodies are fueled during endurance events. Energy is stored in three
forms: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The most efficient energy
comes from carbohydrates (i.e., glycogen/sugar). However, after
about 4-6 hours of running, the body depletes itself of carbohydrates
and begins to use fat as the primary fuel source. The problem here
is that the body cannot metabolize fat as efficiently, thus requiring
the runner to slow down significantly (i.e., hitting the wall).

To avoid this "wall", the endurance runner must focus on taking in as
much carbohydrates as possible once the run begins. Since you want
the carbs to get where they are needed quickly, what we typically
recognize as "bad" carbs in an everyday diet (candy, sugar, cookies,
soda) become "good" carbs during an endurance run. This is because
the body can very quickly metabolize these more refined products.

Keeping up on carbs is helpful, but it is difficult to make it
through a 100-mile race without becomeing somewhat depleted. Thus,
it is also desirable to speed up the fat metabolization process.
Most studies show that the best substance to accomplish this is
caffeine. Following this logic, Coke provides a double punch of
sugar and caffeine that can help the body metabolize what it needs
for endurance running.

As for the sugar crash, when you are running a 100-miles, a crash can
happen at any minute if you don't keep up with the carbs. Slow-
metabolizing carbs (brown rice, fruit) actually promote a crash more
than the fast metabolizing carbs (candy, sugar, Coke) because the
body is running on overload. The Coke reaches your system much
faster and can thus keep off the crash as long as you keep up the
fast carbs.

The issue of caffeine being a diuretic is probably the toughest for
people to deal with. The key thing here is to note that the
dehydrating effect of running 100-miles is an order of magnitude
greater than the dehydrating effect of caffeine. No one in their
right mind would ONLY drink Coke during an endurance event. The
average person will sweat 4-gallons of fluid during a 100-mile run
and must attempt to replace most of that during the event or suffer
serious dehydration. The diuretic effects of caffeine are almost
negligible when dealing with exertion at this level.

As a side note, most participants in a 100-mile run end up staying
awake for one or two days without sleep, so there are certainly other
reasons why we crave caffeine ...

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for the great info on why coke is something I've seen the ultra
runners drink out there on the trail. Y'all have a great spring time training,
and hope some of you get to do the WS100. I'd love to make it out for Tevis, but
will have to see how the planning and $$$ goes. I do love that trail, and think
about it probably way too much!
