Hey Jeff,
Thanks a lot for all the work putting the spreadsheet together. I'm still
bummed that I didn't get into the run this year, but it was fun looking at the
splits anyway. Maybe I can plan for 2004.
By-the-way, I was wondering if you ever did the California 14'ers last summer?

their split times between aid stations since 1986. Because of snow
years - hilited in blue, course changes, ... I only took the major
stations and whatever times were available between stations (eg last
year there was no split time between recorded at Robinson so the
Robinson to Last Chance split is not shown.) Someone else probably
has done this before but I haven't seen it.

All of the data came from files on the WST site - put together this
last rainy, winidy weekend in SF Bay Area. The spreadsheet can be
sorted by time and you can view the fastest splits and looking at the
last column see if it was a DNF. You can also graph after sorting,
average the times, etc... Only one "strange" time - 1987 Hi 49 to

See how your splits compare to others - or plan for 2003! Good
luck!

At some point somebody is going to ask the following questions so here is
the info now

Sunrise/Sunset and Moon Data for race day is shown below
(Note it is a new moon, so this year it will be very black at night)

-Note sun/moon data for any location or date can be found
at http://mach.usno.navy.mil/

Snow - for those of you who want to know what the snow looks like at the
high point on the course
you can check out the live cam at

http://winter.squaw.com/html/squawcambig.html

The race course crosses the alpine meadow in the background of the picture.
Be sure to visit this site during daylight hours. Since it is a live cam,
it can be pretty black at night

From that page there is also a link to the Squaw SnoReport which shows
current snow depths

That's too bad that you didn't get a chance to attempt the CA 14'ers thing. I'd
be interested in doing that sometime, but I think I'm going to concentrate on
Hardrock for next summer now that I didn't get into WS.
I'm planning on doing Las Trampas as long as Eric has the run, but I haven't
talked to him for a couple of months.
Since I've been sending this to the WS list, I've got a bunch of pictures from
last years run. Would anyone be interested if I posted them on my website?

Sorry to here about WST - but there's plenty to keep you busy.
Regarding the CA 14'ers - I was all packed on July 10th and received a call from
work about big problems. Had to call my partner at 5am and tell him to unpack
because I couldn't go. As it turned out - fires in the area kept everyone out
for several days. I didn't want to do it after 7/15 because - legally you
aren't suppose to be in one of the areas. I saw later on a guy from CA did it
in August. A few people of who know the laws mentioned the permit issue but ...
Thinking about next July but may run Vermont.
Haven't heard from Eric about his Las Trampas yet - are you thinking about doing
it?
Good luck in your runs.

Hi all,

Anyone in Los Angeles looking for running partners to train for WS100 next year?

I live and train in the Santa Monica Mtns, and work in the Valley. I'm
especially looking for partner(s) who might want to make a twice weekly commute
via running/biking to work. Really, its not as heinous as it sounds--just try
it! We gotta train right?...And wouldn't you rather spend those 2 hours in the
mtns rather than in traffic?! I've done it several times solo, but hoping
partners could turn this into a regular thing.

I usually road or mtn bike to work, leave my bike and run back early in the
week, then do the opposite later in the week. Mileage is anywhere from 9 to 25+
one-way depending on where home/work is and what trails we take. And there are
so many possible routes over the hills, that we rarely need to repeat a trail!
If interested, email me at info@...

Hi WS runners,

I'm planning to run the whole Backbone Trail in Los Angeles on
the weekend of May 31st/June 1st-65 miles in one day-as my last long,
hard training run for Western States. I wondered if anyone from the LA
area might be interested in joining me for all or part of it? I would
like to start at sunrise on Saturday and finish sometime on Saturday
night.

I'm running it in the direction from Will Rogers Park to the
other end in North Malibu. For those who don't already know, the
Backbone Trail is a very difficult, rocky single track trail with a few
navigational challenges, lots of elevation gain and loss, and
unbelievable beauty. I plan to fast hike the uphills and run everything
else. Challenging, but the rewards are amazing.

This is not an organized event, just a training run-no cost
except bringing your own supplies. So if people want to do the whole
thing, please have sufficient training b/c we will all be responsible
for ourselves. I will be going at a little under my race pace and be
trying to stick to that schedule-I'm midpack pace, but I have some fast
runners who might come out too. Since there is little water on the
trail I will need to arrange for aid along the way...so thought there
might be runners who would be interested in meeting me to run sections
of the trail and serve as an aid station for me at the chosen parking
lot/meeting place. They can either do an out and back section to their
cars, or if they want to do a longer section, we can possibly arrange a
caravan with a later car/partial runner. I'll arrange all the
logistics. I'm going to run this no matter what, but thought I'd open
it up for others b/c that will make the logistics a little easier and be
more safe and fun. I've been on 90% of the Backbone Trail, so I know
the route pretty well and can provide directions and descriptions for
people.

If anyone is interested, you can email me at info@...

	 Thanks!

Hi all,

My crew and pacers for Western States are also mtn bikers who would like
to fill their off hours before & during the race by getting some bike
training in. I wondered if there were locations off the course that
they could get to, do some riding and still make all my crew stops? We
are all from Southern California and don't know the area near the course
very well, and want to make sure they are riding well off of it so that
there is no DQ issues with this.

I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on possible
locations/parks/trailheads that they could get to along the way? Or
even trail books, guides or good bike stores to ask, and where we might
find those books/stores on our drive north.

I'll be a mid to back of the pack runner, so they will have some time to
kill! They are all very good mtn bikers, so they can handle
intermediate and advanced rides. They are also accustomed to riding
trails at night.

Thanks,
Kathryn Tubbs

Jonni, I know Tevis starts near Truckee but I don't know where
you enter our course- maybe near Lyon's Ridge??? Anyway, for
WS, once over the peak at Squaw, the area to Lyon's Ridge is
pretty spotty with snow. You can go a few hundred yards with
snow and then another few hundred yards with no snow- with the
snow being in the shadier areas. Where there is snow it is
quite thick but very icy due to the constant heating and
cooling. It's quite dangerous. Most of this should melt by
Tevis. There's also a lot of water from the snow melt. From
Lyon's to Red Star, the snow is very patchy. There is snow
along side of the trail by Elephant's trunk and Cougar Rock.
The brief patches are icy and are usually located where
there is not much sun (slope areas with tree that only get
partial sun). There are also several tree down blocking the
trail but one of our safety patrol volunteers gave this
information on the location to one of the Tevis people at the
race (Bill Johnson) and he is notifying the forest service.
The sectioin from Red Star to Robinson also has snow (and
trees). There is little snow in the first 3 miles to Robinson
but the snow get more pronounced and thicker the closer you
get to Robinson. Not real icy though. Being on Soda Spring
Rd, I think most of this will be gone by Tevis as well but if
not, horses should have no problem going through whatever
snow is remaining. Hope this helps.

Jonnie,

I ran the race.
You should not have any problem. Most of the snow
should be gone by Tevis. It will be muddy though. Hope
your horse don't mind that...

Wow, thanks so much for the great details Glenn! The Tevis trail
crosses at 89 and the Truckee river, and then along a hiking trail
along the South slope of Squaw Valley. The trail re-connects with the
historic route about a mile short of Watson's Monument. We ride up
the service road under the ski lifts to the top. I thought that the
trail was pretty much the same for the run and ride, but somewhere
the runners do more miles between Squaw and Auburn, that the riders
don't, as we have about 8 miles of trail before we get to 89 and the
Truckee River.

This has been such a weird weather year, and hopefully it will stay
warm enough to melt off most of the snow before the ride. But then we
will have the nasty bogs and mud through Granite Chief. This will be
my 3rd attempt, and hopefully it will be "3rd times the charm".
Getting a horse ready in the "flats" of Texas has been tough, so I
took the horse out to CA for his last conditioning. (and MY
conditioning)

Congrads to all those who did the run, and thanks to all volunteers
who go out and help at these events so WE can participate.

Jonni, good luck to you. I was the sweeper for the run so I
had plenty of time to check out the conditions. Hopefully
most of the snow will be gone but there's going to be areas
where, because of the runoff, that it's going to be wet.

Just a quick note, before I sign off the list.

First, thanks again to all the runners who gave me trail reports after
the WS100. The high country was not bad at all (in my mind) for the
ride. We had a great time, and Hank and I finished with about half an
hour to spare!!! Now I am back in Texas, already longing to be in the
Sierra's again....

For those who come out to the Grasslands run in Decatur TX, I ride
sweep each year after the last runner on the 50 miler. Come say howdy!

Hello all,

I am in the race this year (as long as the doc clears me for my
achilles) and I was hoping to stay a couple of days before the race
near the start. My wife and I like to (tent) camp, so I thought this
area would be great for that; my question is how is camping in that
area (availability, cost, safety of the area, etc.)? Any information
will be greatly appreciated (I notice the only other posts are
concerned with RV parking and they were 5 years ago.)

Hope to see you all June 24-25!

Cheers,
Robert
