JOE MALATJI

DINDELA CD LAUNCH
Best known as the leader of Thula Sana, playing Marabi, the street music of Soweto, South African musician and visual artist Joe Malatji will be releasing his new CD, Dindela, on July 16.  Joining him on the night will be Thula Sana, David Marama, Peter Sleeper, Misha Garbo and friends.


Sometimes gentle, sometimes energetic, always rhythmic.  Joe’s music has entertained Melbourne audiences since 1987, when he arrived here after a long journey of escape from South Africa’s vicious Apartheid System.  

Joe has taught numerous local musicians, has played at festivals and events across Australia, including concerts at Hamer Hall.  He has also taught several choirs African songs and lullabies.

Joe has produced a number of CDs for Thula Sana and has appeared on numerous compilation albums.  Joe is also a fine visual artist whose combined exhibition “Silent Voices” with Ethiopian artist Sutueal Bekele Authe was held in Melbourne earlier this year.

David Chimwemwe Marama Guitarist, Composer, Vocalist, Traditional instrumentalist & Percussionist.  

From Malawi, exiled to Tanzania, David came to Australia with family in 1991.  Researcher of African music, composer, performer and manager of notable bands, including Tatunane which won the 1991 Radio France award in a field of 500 African and Caribbean groups.   David has played in an extensive list of bands both overseas and in Australia.

He has recorded with Musiki Manjaro, Thula Sana, Royal Swazi Spas, Orso, Ray Pereira and Boite projects.  Whilst in Australia, David has participated in countless festivals.

He is a passionate supporter of projects that encourage youth development through art and music.  

Peter Sleeper long time Thula Sana member, trombone player and arranger will join the group again as special guest.
