Description

The Women's Prison Book Project (WPBP) provides women in prison with free reading materials and resources covering a wide range of topics from legal and educational materials to politics, fiction, history, and women's health. Founded in 1994, WPBP is an entirely volunteer-run organization.

Although there are other prison book projects across the nation, WPBP seeks to meet the specific needs of women in prison by providing materials on families, kids, women's health/self help, queer issues, and legal aid resources for women serving time for killing their abusers.

Currently there are more than two million people in U.S. jails and prisons. That's the highest incarceration rate in the world. There are also over one hundred political prisoners and prisoners of war in the United States. These numbers will continue to increase as the war on drugs rages on, the construction and management of prisons becomes a lucrative business, and repression of progressive movements intensifies. Racism and the criminalization of poverty are the main forces behind the skyrocketing numbers of people under the control of the prison system.

WPBP seeks to build connections with provide support for women in prison, and to educate people on the outside about the realities of women's lives in prison. Ultimately. we are working to create a critical discussion about the role of prisons in our society, as part of a growing movement working for systematic change of the justice system.
