1. From Jennifer: Liberating Dependence

I spent the weekend in Athens, Georgia with my precious friend, Katharyn.
I love to visit because she and her family are all treasured friends and we
have a blast when we are together!

It had been a few years since my last visit and boy, had things changed!
Katharyn had been busy redecorating her home and rearranging furniture.
For me, it was almost like visiting her home for the first time-nothing was
like I remembered it.  The piano was in a different room, couches were
against new walls and in some places there was new furniture that I was
not yet acquainted with.  Now, all of this only really matters because I
can’t see!  I simply had a map in my mind from the last time I visited
and now it was obsolete!  The last few times I visited I was independent
since I was so familiar with my surroundings.  But, this time, I realized
pretty fast that I would have to pull out my cane to navigate all the new
additions and changes.

I must admit, I don’t really like to use my cane, if I don’t have to.  But,
it was completely necessary for this weekend.  I may not really like
using my cane, but Katharyn’s kids sure like it!  Her daughter, Anya,
was especially curious and it was all she could do to keep her little
hands off of it!

So, on Sunday morning, I sat down at the piano, resting my cane on the
bench next to me.  Anya made her way to my side and gently moved the
cane so she could sit down.  She held the cane in her hands, twirling it,
pointing it and thoroughly examining it.   I could tell she was contemplating
something as she studied my cane.  Finally, she asked “Are you ever
embarrassed to carry your cane?”  I stopped playing to answer her sincere
question.  “I used to be,” I shrugged. “Now, I sometimes feel self conscious,
but, I'm not embarrassed.”  I continued to explain.  “To me, you see, my
cane is my ticket to freedom!” I cheerfully announced.  “If I didn’t depend
on my cane, I wouldn’t get to navigate or enjoy my world!”

Anya was satisfied with my simple answer and as I further considered our
conversation, I became increasingly satisfied with what it represented.

If I refused dependency, I would reject liberty.

Don’t speed past that point.
You see, because I choose to be dependent on my cane, I experience a
kind of liberating independence!  I think that is radical!  Here’s why.  When
we choose to be totally dependent on God’s Word, it ushers in a freedom
that we would never experience otherwise.  When we rely on his wisdom
and hold on to his precepts, we walk in freedom, not fear.  When we fully
lean on the promises in His Word, we find that we are freed from the
wishing and worrying that imprisons us.

Let’s face it, life changes.  Things are not always as we remember them.
Loss happens, people we love leave, our inner worlds can become
rearranged because of emotional changes.  We all need a way to
navigate, and even enjoy our world, and the only way is dependence.
Pure, utter dependence on God’s Word truly liberates us.

Don’t settle for a vigilante faith that depends on you and your ability to
navigate.  It will never lead to true freedom.  Hold onto God’s Word like I
hold onto my cane, with full dependence -- and you will find the liberty you
long for.

Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.
Psalm 119:35 NASB

2. wmReaching Out: Hurricane Katrina

Please continue to keep the people affected by Hurricane
Katrina in prayer. We know that there are many churches
and organizations that were affected, and many that are
reaching out to help.

We have sisters in women's ministries who have lost
homes and more tragically, loved ones. Lift them to the
Lord, for we know that He alone can meet their needs
and give them peace.

Please take a moment to pray, and give to the relief agencies
serving those devastated by Katrina.

3. wmMinistry Tip: Your Top Tips for New WM Leaders

We asked you for your number one piece of advice
for a new WM leader and you filled our mailbox with
great responses! We will feature some of your
answers through the month of September. Enjoy!

Prayer is one of the most important elements of
building a ministry and many women said this would
be their number one tip:

Get on your knees.  Take lots and lots of time to get
on your knees.  Lead your women in getting on their
knees.  James 4:10 out of The Message says "Get
down on your knees before the Master; it's the only
way you'll get on your feet." ... Elaine Norton

My number one ministry tip would be to pray about
everything you undertake and don't be bothered
about numbers at your events.  Remember, keep
your focus on God and leave the results to Him.
God Bless! ... Carmalyn Miller

My first thought on this subject is to start with a
humble and prayerful heart.  Ask Jesus to guide you
every step of the way.  Start every session in
prayer.  Putting aside our own egos is mandatory.
Be ready to listen to all suggestions.  Learn to
prioritize the needs of your church.  You may need to
start out with a single idea and as the ministry
expands, subdivide and grow.  Encourage the
leadership to "think outside of the box" and don't put
the same people in the same old jobs.  Set up short
term and long term goals.  Have fun and remember all
things can be done through Christ.

The first ministry team you need to form is a prayer team
to pray daily for your Women’s Ministry. ... Debbie Asbury

Pray, Pray and wait for guidance from God in everything.
The team members, schedule and most importantly
programs offered to your women. ... Betty Barker

Thanks for sharing ladies. Look for more tips next week!

4. wmEvent Idea: Sweet September Night

Based On: The sweetness of God our Father and
His Word, Psalm 119:103

Description: A mini-evening 2 1/2 hour sweet getaway
for our women with sweet fellowship, sweet laughter,
sweet worship and a sweet message/testimony from
one of the women in our church.

Since this is at the beginning of our fall season it gives
us an opportunity for women to connect and sign up for
Bible Studies and upcoming events.  Decorations are
done surrounding our assortment of sweet decadent
desserts that are served to our gals.  An offering is
taken to help a community charity.  This year our
offering will go to the Hurricane Katrina victims.
