1. From Jennifer: Building on The Foundation

Summer is home improvement time at the Rothschild homestead!!  When Phil
and I began to assess all the projects that needed to be done around our home,
it prompted us to go look at new houses!  We figured that after we did all the
updating of new floors, walls, and fixtures, we might as well buy a new house.

So, we joined the many curious onlookers who marched through Springfield’s
Parade of Homes last Sunday. We saw every thing, from modest to magnificent.
We observed the differences between builders.  We could visibly recognize
where each builder invested his capital - we could see what was important to
him.  You know how we could tell, don’t you?  It was clear by the kind of building
materials he used.  Some laid granite counter tops in the kitchen, some laid
Formica.  In some homes, we tread upon the most lovely parquet wood floors, in
others, it was linoleum!!  I am quite sure though, that the part of each home that
we could not see, the foundation, was much the same.  As a novice
house hunter the quality of the building materials I could see was a reflection of
the quality of the foundation I could not see.   And that, my friend, is the same
with our lives. The quality of the building materials we use in our lives reflects the
foundation we build our lives upon.

Here's what I mean, Paul put it best in his letter to the Corinthians.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus
Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood
hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to
light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 1 Corinthians 3:11-14 NIV

It seems that all the building supplies mentioned by Paul have something in
common.  They each have an assigned value.  Gold, silver, precious stones cost
a lot.  They require sacrifice in order to obtain them, they cost the purchaser, and
they don’t seem to lose their value.  Wood, hay, and straw on the other hand, are
easy to obtain.  They have little or no value.  Each is easily accessible, requiring
little or no effort or sacrifice.

So when I survey the building materials in these verses, it makes me survey the
building materials in my life.  I wonder…What do I build with?  Does it cost me
anything?  Is it enduring?  Am I a cheap builder?  Do I gather wood shavings and
leftover scrap metal?  Do I offer to God that which costs me nothing?  Do you?

I don’t want to be a stick gatherer!  I really don’t want to invest my life into collecting
cheap pieces of straw and stubble to build upon the foundation of Christ’s finished
work in my life.  And I know you don't want to either.

The foundation of our lives is the bedrock of Christ.  And the Foundation of our lives
deserve a better and more worthy edifice.  I must build upon the foundation of my
life with the costly stones of sacrifice, the purest gold of godliness, and the sterling
silver quality of servanthood.

Paul tells us that it is the fire of judgment that will eventually reveal the quality of
the building materials we chose.  But it seems to me that the refining fire of trials
that we experience here and now can reveal a lot about our buildings also.  The
works of wood, the habits of hay, and the service of straw never endure when
the fire is hot.  They are the transient and feeble building materials of graceless
giving, merciless ministering, and selfish serving.   When the heat is on, they won't
stand.  You and I must be builders of quality construction because only what is
built of precious and costly materials will last.  And, the quality of the materials
we use are a reflection of the foundation of our lives.

The Heavenly reward of which Paul writes can be experienced this side of Heaven.
I believe it’s found in the ability to enjoy the lasting nature of that which we sacrificed -
realizing that the cost is worth it, and The Foundation deserves it!

So my friend, build well.

When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more,
But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.  Prov. 10:25 NASB

2. wmEvent Idea: Bible "Blues Clues" Treasure Hunt

Objectives: To get the participants working together as a team.
To delve a bit into the Bible. To have fun!

Materials: Bibles, prizes at the end.

Procedure: For our Ladies Retreat, I came up with a Blues Clues Bible treasure hunt.
I printed up clues with a little blue pawprint and a bible verse. I also printed the key
word from that verse on the back for those who got stuck. For example, I stuck a clue
to a door, so I found a verse with a reference to a door. I found verses about a bed, food,
trees, etc. Use whatever will be at your area. We separated the ladies into teams, then
I verbally gave them the first clue, (the rest were in envelopes at each clue location).
The trail ended with a stuffed 'Blue' dog guarding the prizes. Every lady received one.
They all had fun, and were racing to finish first! :-)

3. wmIcebreaker: Questions

Objectives: To help ladies meet new people by talking to EVERYONE at an
event, not just the people they already know.

Materials: Questions, paper, pens, basket

Procedure: Prior to your event, write down many different questions on small
sheets of paper. The questions should be thought-provoking and/or fun. We
used questions such as "When you were a child, what did you want to be
when you grew up?" "If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would
you go?" "What part of your daily routine do you enjoy most?” etc. Be creative,
and try to have as many different questions as possible. It's okay to double up
on a few if necessary.

Fold up the questions and put them in a basket. As the ladies arrive, ask the
ladies to draw a question from the basket. Explain that the object is for them to
ask that question to as many people as possible. Instruct them to introduce
themselves and write down the names and a brief version of the answer for
everyone they talk to. We had about 30 ladies at our event and devoted about
a half-hour for the ladies to mingle and ask their questions.

When you are ready to wrap up, have everyone take a seat. Go around the
room and ask each lady to state their name, their question, and share either a
common theme to the answers or a particularly unique answer.

The ladies really had a blast with this game! It got everyone talking, and we all
had a few laughs as well. It immediately eliminated the feelings of awkwardness
that we all have when arriving at an event by giving them something to say to each
other right away. No one ended up spending the evening with only the people they
knew prior to our gathering.

We also gave away a door prize at the end of the game to the lady who spoke
with the most people.
