1. From Jennifer: Indefatigable Discipline

Clayton groaned after dinner last night as his Dad pulled a familiar
book off the kitchen shelf.  “NOT AGAIN”, he moaned.  Why do we
need to read this every night?  Phil simply replied “YOU NEVER
KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW THESE”.

The book which drew such protest from our high school freshman is
100 WORDS EVERY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE SHOULD KNOW.
And even though Clayton has a few more years before graduation,
we pull out the book each night following dinner and try to guess
definitions!  His Dad and I think it is fun and stimulating, Clayton,
on the other hand, thinks it’s the very essence of cruel and unusual
punishment!  Last night, for instance, we learned what it meant to be
FECKLESS.  Ah, you might know someone who meets the qualifications
to be described as feckless…it means lacking purpose or vitality,
feeble or ineffective, careless and irresponsible.  What a great adjective!
Or, last week we unearthed a buried treasure in the word BELLICOSE.
I love that word because it sounds so beautiful but it actually means
war-like or hostile.

And there are some memorable words from several weeks ago like
ENERVATED and INDEFATIGABLE!  Now there’s a mouthful.  One means to
be drained of energy and the other means to be tireless.  Aren’t words
magnificent, grand, divine, glorious, rich, scrumptious, spectacular and
sublime?

I understand Clayton’s disinterest in learning new words, though.  It
takes discipline to grow a vocabulary and discipline is rarely fun and
it’s more often draining than stimulating.  I understand because I have
felt that way about THE WORD before.  It takes discipline to be in
THE WORD each day.  It takes discipline to grow a spiritual vocabulary
filled with memorized truth.

But, discipline will always lead to delight and delight will always lead
to desire.   Did you get that?  If you and I dedicate ourselves to THE
WORD, discipline ourselves to read and memorize it, then we can
expect for that act of discipline to become a delight.  And don’t we
desire those things in which we delight?  The prophet Jeremiah
experienced the delight and desire of God’s word. He wrote “Your words
were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the
delight of my heart”.

Sometimes we moan when it comes to discipline, sometimes we are
feckless and enervated!  But, be indefatigable and pick up THE BOOK
each day and night and learn something from His Word.  One day
you will realize that what began as discipline has now become pure,
perfect, genuine, absolute, unadulterated delight!!

“The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment
of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also
than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.  Moreover, by them is your
servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Psalm 19:8-11 ESV

Blessings and joy,

2. wmEvent Idea: Cafe Night

Description: We held a Cafe Night for women who have been attending
church but had not connected yet.  It was wonderful!  We had different
types of coffee available, poetry being read, soft music being played and
the tables were decorated with coffee mugs to be taken home with
scripture cards in them.  We introduced our new women Bible study
at this event.  We have 90 new women involved in smaller groups now,
not just Sunday church.

3. wmIcebreaker: Communication Blocks

Objectives: To get people working together as a group,
and to find creative ways of communicating

Materials: two identical sets of colored child's building blocks for each set
of teams participating

Procedure: Divide your group into teams. Sit your participants back to back,
with a table on each side so that each team has a space to work. Give each
team a set of blocks. Taking turns, one side places blocks in any formation
they like, one at a time, on the table. The person who places the block tells
the team behind them how to place their block identically. The second team
cannot ask questions, and they take turns placing the blocks. The second
team can help each other, but cannot talk at all. When all the members of the
group have each placed a block, the teams compare. It really emphasizes how
often you only THINK you are communicating! Now, switch sides and let the
other group do the placing and telling.

Variations: eliminate words from the directions like color words, shape words,
direction words. You'll be surprised how creative women can get with directions!

4. wmTheme Idea: Pass the salt...

Based on: Matthew 5:13, 14

Description: We held a women's conference/luncheon in the early afternoon
and after everyone had been served, the hostess read a devotional about
how we are the salt of the world. At the end of the event, a small basket
was passed around the table with little packages for each woman to take
home. These packages were small bags of salt wrapped in tulle material and
tied with a red ribbon, as a reminder to be salt of the earth.

wmNote: Consider expanding the theme to include being salt and light.
Simply include a small votive candle with the salt and create a small
card with the theme verse on it to attach to the package.
