There's a website out there that is like youtube but only allows you to upload
12 seconds of video at a time. It's like looking at a photo album but with a bit
of action tossed in and I am hooked!

I have so much great footage from trips I've taken with women over 40, and have
felt overwhelmed when it came to putting it together into something folks would
enjoy watching. This 12 seconds thing solves that problem, you can watch
anything for 12 seconds!

I've loaded snippets from our Colorado River trip in October and other trips
throughout the years. Have a look, have fun and who knows you might even see a
few seconds of yourself!

Check back often for updates.

I'm getting ready to organize a trip to Belize for the winter of 2009.
There has been interest in this adventure in the past and I'd like to
know if you'd like to join us. We'll be snorkeling, visiting
archaeological sites, having a chat with black howler monkeys,
canoeing, meeting local folks and an array of other intriguing
activities.

As is typical on our adventures we'll stay in fun and funky places,
have great food and fantastic company.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

As a kid I remember sitting at the dinner table, my plate as empty as
required for me to be 'done' and outside on a summer evening the
shouts of my neighborhood friends could be heard. "Can I out go out
and play?" was asked as often as my mother suggested, "Why don't you
go out and play?"

Why don't YOU go out and play? Are you too busy or just out of the
habit? Do you want to try something new but are just not sure how to
make the pieces fall in place? Maybe you're nervous and unsure of
whether it's a good idea or not.

Our outdoor and cultural adventures for women over 40 are designed to
provide active vacations for women who are still interested in
including some play in their lives. We make it easy and our decades of
experience mean that you can trust that our itineraries are among the
best designed and our leaders the most skilled, you'll find. Our
groups are small and our travel philosophy means that we leave wiggle
room for adventure and exploration. No packaged tours and 'be back on
the bus in 10 minutes' for us!

Not sure you're ready for a 15 day adventure down the Colorado River?
We offer short getaways that are perfect for dipping your toes into
the water to see if it suits you. These adventures provide all the
great components of our longer trips, good food, comfortable lodging,
outdoor adventures and the company of other women who enjoy sharing
some laughter.

So hurry up, finish up what you need to do and then do what you want
to do! For more information about all the adventures offered by

Hi Folks! I hope that wherever you are you've had a glimpse of spring.
Here in Vermont we had some wonderful unseasonably warm weather
(enough to convince some of us that we could plant our
gardens.....wrong) and now are back to cooler days. I knew that when I
took out the firewood that I was likely to have to bring it back in
sooner or later, and I was right.

Time is running out for our summer trips. We have our Hike & Raft
adventure in July and a great Hike & Kayak trip in August. Both trips
are here in New England and are fabulous short breaks, but....I won't
be able to hold rooms much longer. If you've thought about treating
yourself, think you need a break, wonder what all this travel and
recreation can do for you, join us and I know you'll have a blast!
Trust me, I know these things, I've been leading trips for years! ;-)

Let me know if you'd like more info.

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
It's hard to believe we are already eight years into the new
millennium! I made my New Year's resolutions early when I signed up
for drumming lessons in the fall and a yoga class earlier this winter.
I'd never done either activity before and hadn't thought much about
them until the opportunity arose. Both classes just seemed like
something that would be fun to try. I'm enjoying both and several
weeks ago performed in a drum recital along with the rest of the
group. I had to laugh when we got together an hour before the
performance to practice, we were all far too nervous than our 7
minutes on stage should require. Most of all I'm enjoying meeting the
other people who join me for these classes.

I'm hoping that you will consider joining us on one of our adventures
in 2008. Perhaps an itinerary or destination will make you think....
"hmmmm...that sounds like it might be fun...." and you'll get in touch
with your questions. I've always `bent over backwards' to create
unique, supportive adventures for women and now that I've been taking
yoga it's even easier for me! I'll be looking forward to seeing you
somewhere in the world soon.

FUN & FUNKY CARIBBEAN
*************************
Space is available on our March adventure to Puerto Rico. I have been
visiting Puerto Rico for over a decade and have decided it was time to
introduce a few lucky women to the places I think are the most fun &
funky! The bioluminescent bay on Vieques is probably the best biobay
on the planet, you won't believe it until you swim in it! Contact me
for more information about the other unique places we'll be visiting.

MOTOR HOME SWAPS
*********************
Motorhome Swap brings together thousands of people worldwide to
exchange their motorhomes for holidays, wherever and whenever they
like. You can check them out at http://www.motorhomeholidayswap.com/

NARROWBOATING IN THE UK
****************************
This has got to be one of the most unique ways to explore the
countryside of England and Wales. We'll have our own boat to drive and
live aboard, stopping along the way for meals in local pubs and
restaurants. There is a distinct culture on the canals and it's fun to
see the looks on the faces of the men who typically drive their own
boats, when a group of `lady yanks' waves in passing. It is possible
to get off the boat and walk every day and we'll also visit historic
sites along the way. Check this trip out!

http://www.exploretravel.com/trips/canals2008.html

HEATHROW UPGRADING FACILITIES
**********************************
Terminal 3, home to Virgin Atlantic is being revamped and a new
terminal 5 is being constructed and will be the new home of British
Airways. Along with all kinds of new amenities like lounges and
railway stations, the goal is to improve the time travelers need to
check in. Terminal 5 is going to be huge, with 60 gates for planes and
shops like Harrods and Tiffany. Executives for the airlines are
boasting that it will take only 15 minutes for the majority of
passengers to check in and make it to the departure lounge. First
class fliers can expect to make it in even less time.

PREVENT PRESSURE POPS
*************************
You've probably had it happen at least once. You're unpacking only to
discover that everything in your bag is covered with hand cream or
shampoo. Next time before you fly take the lids off your toiletries,
squeeze the sides and then replace the lids tightly. This helps
prevent leaks during the flight.

CAR RENTAL SAVINGS
*********************
Check and see if your car rental company provides a free pick up
service. If it does, instead of hiring your car from the agency at the
airport, find an off airport location. You can save on the additional
fees that are applied for airport rentals.

EMERGENCY TRANSLATION CARDS
**********************************
I've always found that traveling to places where I don't speak the
language is fun and exciting. I enjoy the antics of attempting to
communicate via sign language but there are some instances when you
want to be able to get your point across with no margin for error. In
the case of allergies it may mean life or death. At
www.selectwisely.com you'll find a variety of cards in different
languages that explain that if you eat peanuts (or another allergen)
you'll need medical treatment. They're invaluable for anyone with an
allergy or food intolerance traveling abroad.

SOUTHWEST EXPLORER
***********************
Be sure to check out our Canyons, Ruins & River adventure coming up in
May 2008. This trip combines hiking to ancient ruins in the
spectacular landscapes of Utah with a raft trip on the San Juan River.
For me, a New Englander, traveling to the Southwest is like visiting
another country the contrast is so vivid. I just love it!

http://www.exploretravel.com/trips/utah2008.html

MAUI LODGING PRICES ON THE RISE
***********************************
If you're planning a visit to the Hawaiian island of Maui this winter
don't be surprised if the cost of lodging makes you stop and take a
deep breath. Maui officials decreed in July that that B&Bs and
vacations rentals without a permit cease operations or faces fines
starting at $1000. The number of properties with permits, at last
count, was a paltry 21, and 816 without. A long standing tacit
agreement between the country and property owners that rules wouldn't
be enforced unless complaints were lodged against a property, seems to
have come to an end. Other islands may follow suit.

PADDLING THE COLORADO RIVER

Spaces continue to become available on our Colorado River trip for
October 2008. Two spaces have just opened up! If you're looking for a
wilderness adventure, this is it!

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
We had our first significant snowfall and I've had a wonderful walks
in the woods with the dogs. I don't need to snowshoes just yet, but
did use my ski poles. They're great for getting upper body exercise. I
found myself grinning when cold, gusty winds came through, a harbinger
of weather to come, surprising myself at how much I looked forward to
winter.

I rarely see wildlife when out walking with my dogs. Most critters see
or hear us coming long before I can get a glimpse of them. For the
most part I'm glad about that. It's not much fun when the dogs meet up
with a porcupine or fisher and I don't need my border collies herding
another fawn out of the woods like they did last spring. I do however
look forward to seeing the tracks left in the snow by the animals out
the night before. The perfect imprints of squirrel, coyote, bob cat
and even mouse paws are exciting to find.

Despite my dietary reality check (high cholesterol) I'm looking
forward to the holiday gatherings this month. I will just have to
watch others enjoy my maple walnut pies. I hope that you have many
reasons to look forward for the months ahead. All the best to you and
yours this holiday season!

SLEIGH BELLS SOON TO RING

We've got invigorating winter escapes planned and need to know how
many rooms to reserve at the lodge. Winter weekends in Vermont can be
popular so don't miss out. If you'd rather find some sunshine and long

with their goal being: "to perform as much as possible, encouraging
all women to express themselves in the boldest ways [that] they can

OTHER PASSIONS
***********************
Anyone who has joined me on an adventure cannot have helped but
discover that I love dogs as much as I do traveling. Two years ago I
traveled to one of the hurricane rescue camps and met Sunny, a fearful
border collie. I hadn't intended on keeping him but his fear issues
were so dramatic that there was no way I could send him off to an
unsure future. Over the years I have learned a lot about working with
dogs in general, and specifically with fearful/timid/shy/nervous dogs.
I have created a website to provide information to other dog owners
who may be dealing with similar behavioral issues. You can find the
site at www.fearfuldogs.com . Please pass it along to anyone you know
that might benefit from learning more about how to rehab these
challenging dogs.

Day dreaming.....they say it's good for you. Here are some adventures
to let your mind drift off to-

Vermont Winter Escape
The ski areas are already open here in Vermont and the drab days of
November will soon be replaced by crisp, clear days perfect for
wandering in the woods. Our getaway includes a cozy inn with hot tub
and crackling fireplace. The chef prepares mouth watering, eye
rolling, good food. It's just the break you'll need after the holiday

Fun & Funky Caribbean
Who'd have thought that you can have an island adventure so close to
home? The gems of Puerto Rico are a well kept secret, I bet most of
you have never even heard of the bioluminescent bay on the island of
Vieques. This is one of the best bio bays on the planet. If you think
you've seen everything and never took a dip in bioluminescent waters,
you have a big surprise and delight waiting for you. How about a latin
dance class in the rain forest with local drummers and a chorus coqui
frogs in the background? Explore a rain forest without crowds. This
trip is for those who still like a few surprises along the way!

I've been taking groups to Puerto Rico for over 10 years and have
found places off the beaten track that reflect the environmental and
cultural diversity of the islands. In March I've scheduled a 6 day
getaway that will introduce you to not only the glorious beaches of
Puerto Rico, but a small rainforest reserve and one of the most
amazing experiences of your life, a swim in a bioluminescent bay. Join
me for snorkeling, sunning, dancing salsa by a camp fire (lesson
provided!), and falling asleep to the sound of coqui frogs.

Contact me for more information, but don't wait too long, hotels book
up fast!

Trip Dates: March 8-13
Cost: $1695

Hope to see you in San Juan!

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
Earlier this week I was at the home of one of our town officers to pay
local taxes. I was not surprised to be greeted by a white haired lady
in her bathrobe, this is Vermont after all. She sent me off with an
invitation to drive around her house to see her wood pile. It was
impressive and I complimented her on it, adding that, as much as I
loved having our wood all stacked and ready for winter, what really
made me happy was a nice big pile of kindling. Once winter sets in and
a fire is built in the woodstove, it's not hard to keep it going, but
it's getting a fire started, should it go out, that requires care and
attention. A good supply of dry kindling makes this task easy.

After a trip with a group of women it is not unusual for someone to
contact me and let me know that by traveling with us they were
inspired to try something else adventurous. For some it meant joining
a gym and staying in better shape for future trips, for others it
meant finding other groups and activities to try. The adventures we
offer for women over 40 are both kindling and fire wood for the fires
in all of us. I think of the women who travel with us regularly,
stoking their passion for travel and outdoor activity with one of our
adventures, and the new folks joining us, letting one of our
adventures kindle the fire they are hoping to build. And like being
seated next to a woodstove there's a cozy, comfortable feeling with
our groups that make it hard to have a trip end.

I hope you'll join us in 2008, whether you're feeding a fire or trying
to coax a spark into a new flame.

SLEIGH BELLS SOON TO RING
*****************************
Don't be lulled into thinking that winter is not heading our way!
We've got invigorating winter escapes planned and need to know how
many rooms to reserve at the lodge. Winter weekends in Vermont can be
popular so don't miss out. If you'd rather find some sunshine and long
sandy beaches join us on our Fun & Funky adventure to Puerto Rico. We
go to places the folks on cruise ships never hear about!

LOST LUGGAGE
***************
Luggage gets lost. We hope it doesn't, at least not until our return
home, in which case I'm often glad to have it delivered (though the
dirty laundry doesn't improve any as the days go by). If you are not
already making it a habit to carry on some basic essentials when you
fly, it's worth thinking about. Airline regulations haven't made this
easier. Printing up your airlines lost luggage policy before you
travel is helpful so that you understand what you are entitled to
should your bags be lost or delayed. Finding this information isn't
any easier than finding your lost bags, but if you go to the airline's
website and look for `baggage' information there should be information
regarding the airline's limits of liability.

Airlines anticipate that approximately 1% of checked bags will be
lost, delayed or damaged. The maximum that domestic airlines have to
pay for damaged or delayed bags is $3000, according to regulations by
the Department of Transportation. Rarely do passengers ever receive
near this amount because airlines are not required to reimburse you
for cash, cameras, video equipment, computers, jewelry and other
expensive items.

Want to purchase some of that lost luggage or confiscated swiss army
knives, golf clubs and corkscrews? Check out:

ADDITIONAL SERVICES/ADDITIONAL FEES
****************************************
Airlines are offering lower airfares but chances are that bag of
peanuts you were hoping for has a price tag on it. Nearly every major
carrier had done away with free meals in coach on domestic flights and
is charging for individual food and drink items. Delta has added a
dedicated HBO channel to its inflight entertainment system and is
charging domestic coach passengers $5 per feature film and $2 for
television programs. Want to be sure you get the most comfy seat in
the house? Northwest Airlines is now charging $15 to reserve some of
the better coach-class seats, like exit rows, on domestic flights.
Look out for add-ons, like travel insurance, that are automatically
added to the price of your ticket unless you choose to `opt-out',
which typically means clicking a small box with some small print
explaining its purpose. Spirit Airlines is one airline that
automatically includes the cost of insurance unless you specifically
decline it.

Continental is one of the few airlines still offering hot meals on
domestic flights and continues to have blankets and pillows available.
JetBlue offers complimentary coffee and Dunkin Donuts along with
satellite television on all its flights.

BIGGER SAVINGS OUT OF THE COUNTRY ONLINE
**********************************************
Renting a car, booking a flight or reserving a room overseas? Besides visiting
the dotcom
website designed for folks in the U.S., venture to the company's website based
overseas.
You might just find that the prices are lower than the ones listed on the U.S.
based site. Do
a search for the company (i.e., Hertz, Budget, etc.) and look for URLs that end
in another
country's domain name; .fr for France, .de for Germany, .au for Australia, etc.
Travelocity
and Expedia also have sites that are geared to overseas clients. You may find
that some
sites based in other countries won't let you make purchases if you don't live
there, or your
trip isn't originating there, but others will allow it and you'll have saved
some money.

PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS HAVE ARRIVED
****************************************
Beginning October 1, nearly anyone coming into the U.S. by plane, including
Americans
returning from popular destinations like Mexico and Jamaica, will need to
present a
passport at the airport. Pity the poor traveler that doesn't as they'll have
additional
screening to contend with. Need a new passport for upcoming travel? Get your
application

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
I heard recently from a childhood friend that I had been trying, unsuccessfully,
for years,
to reconnect with. She emailed, apologized and admitted that she had been
experiencing
some turmoil in her life, much of it roiling inside her. She wondered if it this
was
menopause or a mid-life crisis. I suggested that we plan a meeting and could hot
flash
and cry for no reason together.

When we find ourselves searching for the `next step' or attempting to figure out
how to
create meaningful and rich lives for ourselves, we often assume that we're on
our own in
the process. Time for looking inward, quietly reflecting on options and
experiences is
important but often moving in new directions means taking a risk. Trying
something new,
meeting people, looking at new scenery all help to stir up the pot in our minds.
Different
ideas are formed as the new experiences are blended with our established
conceptions of
life and who we are and what we're suppose to do.

Each itinerary that I design for Explorations in Travel provides the time and
space for those
quiet reflective moments that are important to all of us, even if we are content
and not
juggling life options in our heads. At the same time our adventures pull women
out of
themselves, there are challenges for those who choose them and living in the
moment has
the advantage of pushing aside our current batch of worries and concerns. You
can learn
to paddle a kayak, see where prehistoric people lived or find out which
combination of
socks is best for hiking,

A recent article in Travel Agent Magazine included an article on `Girlfriend
Getaways'. "The
women in the focus groups talked about how important these trips are for them,
saying
they feel more self-confident, adventurous and relaxed as a result of their
girlfriend
getaway. It is a time for women to share common experiences, and get validation
and
acceptance." I think they left out that there's laughter and fun when you travel
with a
group of women, even a group of women that you've only just met. I hope that you
can
join us and explore the world and all its options with us.

I had just finished rafting with a group of friends on one of our local rivers
this weekend.
The parking area where paddlers got changed out of their wet clothes and loaded

lovely autumn
day in New England. A tall fellow approached a group and one person asked him
how his
trip was. "I'm still getting used to being back," he replied. He had just
returned from 16
days on the Colorado River. "If you EVER get the chance to go down the
Colorado," I heard
him say, "do it."

Eighteen of us are will be doing just that in October of 2008. The trip is

What a summer! Our hike & kayak trip this month was fabulous. It was not without
some
excitement, like gusting winds that stirred up white caps on Lake Whitingham the
day we
were scheduled to kayak. No worries though, we just flip flopped days and hiked
instead.
One highlight was that our inn turned out to have an inventive chef (who
unfortunately
kept his recipe for fire roasted tomato and artichoke bisque close to his chest,
despite our
efforts to coax ingredients from him). I'm sure that soup will taste even better
this winter
when we stay there for our winter escape get away. But why wait 'til then?
There's still
space on our September Vermont Hiking & Kayaking Great Escape.

I am very excited about our trips for 2008. I'll be reviving and revamping some
classics
like narrowboating in the U.K. This is one of the most unique vacations offered
for a
group. We'll be living aboard AND piloting our own narrowboats on the canals in
England
and Wales. It's the perfect way to meet people and see the countryside. Also
coming up is
an adventure to the southwest, one of this country's most startling areas. We'll
be hiking
to Anasazi ruins and rafting on the San Juan River in Utah. It's the perfect
combination of
activities to discover and enjoy the region. On one trip we enjoyed our morning
coffee and
tea with a show of big horn sheep bashing their heads together as their morning
wake up
activity.

GETTING BUMPED
****************
With fewer flights scheduled airlines are more likely to overbook and your
chances of
getting bumped increase. Here are some ways to minimize the likelihood of
loosing your
seat.
-Get an advance seat assignment. Passengers with seat assignments are typically
only
bumped if they arrive late.
-Check in online. If you don't have a seat assignment, check in online and get
one.
-Don't be late. If you don't have a seat assignment get to the airport early.
Some airlines
reserve a portion of their seat assignment inventory for airport check in. If
you are denied
a seat, put your name on the `standby' seat assignment list.
-Know the lingo. Voluntary bumping occurs when a passenger with a confirmed seat
assignment agrees to give up her seat for a negotiated compensation. It is not
regulated
by the Dept. of Transportation. Involuntary bumping occurs when an airline
forcibly
bumps a paid passenger from the flight because it has been oversold. The DOT
regulates
compensation for involuntary bumping.
-Know what to ask. If you volunteer to give up your seat in exchange for a free
ticket, find
out about any restrictions such as expiration and black out dates.
-Know your rights. If you are involuntarily denied boarding and substitute
transportation
is scheduled to arrive between one and two hours after your original arrival
time (between
one and four on international flights), the airline must pay you an amount
amount equal to
your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $200 maximum. If the
substitute
transportation gets you there more than two hours later (four internationally),
or if the
airline does not make alternate arrangements for you the compensation doubles
(twice the
cost of your fare, $400 maximum).

GIRL'S NIGHT THE MUSICAL
************************
Friends from England recently told me about a production they were involved with
that has
migrated to the U.S. It got rave reviews in Scottsdale and Madison and will be
in New
London CT in September. Check it out

"Hilarious and touching, Girls Night: The Musical follows five friends as they
relive their
past, celebrate the present and look to the future during a wild and outrageous
girls night
out at a karaoke bar. You know you don't need an excuse for a good time ... so
grab your
sisters, your girlfriends and your work mates and prepare to laugh, cry and
dance in the
aisles!"

HIKE & KAYAK
************
September is many Vermonters' favorite time of year. Join us for a mellow hike
to Stratton
Pond and paddle around Lake Whitingham where you'll see autumn beginning to
creep in
with touches of reds and golds on the leaves around the lake. Our lodge provides
comfortable accommodations and the quaint town of Wilmington has shops,
galleries and
coffee bars, so very civilized!

REDWOODS TO THE SEA
********************
There is no question that the grandeur of the west coast will take your breath
away. From
giant sequoias to Coastal Highway 1, the view both up close and distant are
magnificent.
We'll be hiking in the redwoods, paddling at Pt. Reyes and exploring the seaside
towns of
Santa Cruz and Capitola and you'll even have the opportunity to walk across the
Golden
Gate Bridge. Space is still available, but won't be for long!

MORE FLIGHTS TO CHINA

departures by
2012.

American Airlines has applied to operate daily nonstop service between Chicago

and Beijing starting in 2009. Continental has applied for daily service from
Newark and
Cleveland to Shanghai in 2009. Delta seeks to operate daily flights between
Atlanta and
Shanghai. Maxjet has applied to provide service between Seattle and Shanghai in
2009.
United Airlines seeks to operate daily nonstop service from San Francisco to
Guangzhou in
2008 and Los Angeles and Shanghai in 2009. Northwest is seeking approval of

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
Summer brings with it the opportunity for me to participate in one of my
favorite activities,
swimming. There's a lovely small pond nearby that I head to in the afternoons,
often
joined by my orange life vested border collie Finn. Finn likes to swim to 2 of
the 3 beaches
on the pond where children might be splashing, and second to sheep, splashing
children
are on his 'favorite things to be around' list. I've given up on trying to
understand his
obsession with moving water, accepting that it's just a border collie thing.
When I'm done
with my swim I have to coax Finn away from his new found friends by becoming an
even
more attractive splasher myself.

Growing up I spent my summers on a small pond where my parents encouraged me to
play in the water. I was applauded when I dared to put my face under, blew
bubbles and
took my first strokes aptly named after dogs. My father built a wooden raft that
floated in
the middle of the lake and my friends and I challenged each other to more and
more
`daring' ways to enter the water. Spins, flips, cannonballs and ultimately
diving in face first
were all techniques that being the first to attempt was a coveted achievement.

I hope that you are finding ways to enjoy some of your favorite summertime
activities, or
are learning new ones. I just started taking drumming lessons and let's just say
that for
right now you can be glad you're not my neighbor. Enjoy the season!

PROTECTING YOUR IDENTITY
************************
After a recent trip to Puerto Rico I received a phone call from American
Express. They were
calling to confirm if I had made a recent purchase at a jewelry store in San
Juan. Not only
hadn't I made the purchase there were others. My credit card number had been
stolen and
was being used. Fortunately American Express (and most other credit card
companies)
make it easy to dispute charges like these, so besides having to wait a couple
of days for a
replacement card, I wasn't too inconvenienced. That is unless they got more than
my
credit card number.

For protection I put a fraud alert on my credit report with the big three,
Equifax, Experian
and TransUnion (reporting to one alerts all three). Here are other tips for
protecting your
identity when you travel.

1. Dump debit cards. By the time you know there's a problem your account can be
emptied.
2. Clean out your wallet. Carry as little as possible and never carry your
Social Security
card.
3. Make copies of all your cards and contact numbers. Carry a copy and leave a
copy with
someone you trust.
4. Get a passport. Even if you don't plan on any international travel, ID
thieves take out
passports using stolen info. They can't do this if you already have one.
5. Secure your data. Make sure your laptops or BlackBerries are password
protected and
encrypted.
6. Look out when you log in. Use wireless networks with caution and make sure
they're
secure.
7. Carry it on. Never check anything valuable and try to keep your carry on
baggage where
you can keep an eye on it.
8. Use caution at hotels. Don't leave personal papers where hotel workers can
find them.
9. Pay attention. It's easy to be distracted and lose track of an important bag
or piece of
luggage.
10. Don't hold the mail. Unfortunately dishonest employees at your local post
office can
be tipped off that you're away. Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail.

FALL FOLIAGE HIKING & PADDLING

With spring on the way it seems odd to be bringing up the autumn, but this year
our fall
foliage adventure falls over a busy weekend for our lovely b&b. Not wanting to
hold any
rooms that the b&b could book otherwise I will not be able to hold rooms past
June. This
means space will be limited.

This 4 day getaway is perfect for experiencing New England in its glory. We'll
kayak on
Squam Lake (of On Golden Pond fame) and hike on a section of the Appalachian
Trail and
visit one of the huts on the trail. This trip is always a favorite and we've
made it better by
spicing it up with some kayaking.

In August and September we are offering a Vermont Hiking & Kayaking Escape. The
August
trip is almost full but September still has space available. We'll be exploring
southern
Vermont including Lake Whitingham (aka Harriman Reservoir) and Stratton
Mountain. This
4 day getaway is perfect for busy schedules or if you just need a dose of fun
and
relaxation.

MESSAGE FROM DEBBIE
**********************************
It's been June for awhile now so pardon the tardiness of this newsletter.
Hopefully it's a
case of better late than never.

Our May adventure in Shenandoah National Park was lots of fun. I am pleased to
say that
some of us shut down the bar, where local performers played music that we gamely
sang
along to, two nights in a row. So what if lights out were at only 10:30pm, I was
pretty
proud of us.

I have recently returned from Puerto Rico where I traveled with a group of
junior high
students. One highlight was seeing baby sea turtles scurrying from their nest in
the middle
of the night on the island of Culebra. The bioluminescent bay on Vieques is a
world-class
wonder and a meeting with the island's resident historian was enlightening. In
May of
2005 the people of Vieques, through years of peaceful protest and resistance got
the U.S.
military to stop using the island for war maneuvers and bombing. Unfortunately
the rate of
cancer among children and adults on the island remains much higher than that of
the
general population of Puerto Rico. This is attributed to the heavy metals and
depleted
uranium in bombs used on the island. I managed to return from the island without
a sato
(street dog) despite a visit to the shelter.

I am looking forward to a lovely summer here in New England. We've got our ever
popular
Hike & Raft Adventure in western Massachusetts planned in July and a new Hiking
&
Kayaking Escape in Vermont planned for August and September. Both of these trips
are
among our short getaways to help you fit a refreshing and invigorating break
into your
busy lives! I hope you can join us.

SLEEP!
*****
One of the pitfalls of traveling across the planet is jet lag. I carry melatonin
with me to
help me fall asleep at an appropriate time, but studies have shown that simply
heating up
your feet may have a similar effect. Melatonin and other sleep inducing drugs
reduce core
body temperature, which may be why they work. They cause blood vessels in the
periphery
of the body to dilate, which redistributes heat, via blood flow, from the core
of the body to
the exterior.

On average, 41 minutes before we consciously decide to go to bed, our body
temperatures
reach their lowest point. The longer we wait to go to bed after our bodies reach
this
minimum temperature, the more difficulty we may have falling asleep. One idea is
that by
warming up your feet, either with a heating pad or a pair of socks, the blood
vessels in
your feet will dilate, encouraging a drop in your body temperature. This theory
may also
explain why it's harder to fall asleep on a plane. To adapt to the vertical
position of sitting
the vessels in our legs are constricted so blood does not pool in them, keeping
our core
body temperature higher than needed for sleep. The best thing about this is that
there's
not much harm in becoming addicted to wool socks!
