I ran the course in 1997 (and part of it in 1998) and loved the new
course last year. Assuming they don't change it for 2000, this is what
to expect:
The new start at Kaysville is similar to Fernwood: a crowded parking
spot for your crew and a lot of runners bunched up at the start.
However, the new start is on a rolling dirt road for about 1/2 mile
before it turns into a rolling trail that takes you past the original
start (at mile 3.6). By this time you're warmed up and spread out. I
think this is a big improvement.
At the other end, once you descend that steep hill into the Mill Canyon
aid station, you do NOT turn left and go down the road towards Cascade
Springs. Instead you head right and soon leave the road to run on
rolling single track trails until reaching the last aid station (Alpine
Loop). From there to the finish is a seemingly endless stretch, but it
is pretty and mostly downhill and a big improvement over the roads into
Midway.
I hope this helps you ... at least until another veteran chimes in :-)

In order to adapt to the altitude, I'm planning on camping out near
the course for about 15 days before the run. Probably near Brighton,
if possible.
Could someone offer some advice on a campground area that has
drinking water?

I cannot find information on the WF100 web site about lodging
recommendations, where the buses to the start leave from, or if there
is any transportation available from the finish back to Salt Lake
City.
Do the buses leave from the Lake Terrace Pavilion, Sugarhouse Park in
Salt Lake City? If so, is there lodging available within short
walking distance from the bus pickup?
If there is no transportation back to Lake Terrace Pavilion from
Sundance, is it OK to leave a car at Sundance while we are running
the race? I am planning on coming out with another runner and we will
rent two cars to leave one out at Sundance, if necessary.
Any information on these questions would be appreciated. Thanks.
I live (and run) along the mighty Wasatch and can give you some recommendations. There is a Motel 6 in Woods Cross, UT and many others. Stay tuned and perhaps I'll post some for the group. You should be able to park a car at Sundance or find a ride with many who will be there. Not sure about the buses.

Russ-
The buses to the start usually leave from an area near downtown SLC
at about 500 South. Several good reasonable lodgings are nearby:
Little America 800-453-9450
Quality Inn 800-521-9997
Motel Six 801-531-1252
Best Western 801-521-7373
The race committee usually sends out a listing during the summer.
The sugarhouse park meeting on Friday is roughly five miles from
downtown and you will need transportation from there to your hotel.
I don't know about overnight parking at Sundance, but rides back to
SLC are not hard to find.
I am local and very familiar with many aspects of wf100.
Will be happy to give more detail. E-mail me: wasatch49@...

Mornin' all . . .
Should we be hearing whether out initial applications were
conditionally accepted . . . or do we wait to hear whether we have
been accepted after we complete our trailwork ????
Sitting in western Mass under a few brand new feet of snow!!!
Thanks for any info.

My understanding is that February 11 is the decision day for applications.
Sitting here in California after a 60+ degree, crystal clear weekend at
Tahoe.
It is kind of rough out here.

Is this Mark??? What are you doing? Wasatch in September??? Me too!! Rick and I want to have you and your brother over to our house in Cool for dinner one evening - we'll have to plan something. Were you up skiing in Tahoe? How's the snow? take care.

Haven't rec'd the confirmation, though ... guess it takes a while for
it to get all the way over to the UK.
And I still have to figure out how to do trail work here!
But it looks on target for the plan, including 3 weeks in August in
Jackson Hole for final training and acclimitization.
See y'all there!

Trail report;
Ran a short section of the course from Bountiful B to Gold ridge and back. Ran
into a moose at Farmington flats and was happy to see the spring creek running
at Arthurs spur.

>From Irv Nielsen, Wasatch Course Marshall:
The Wasatch 100 mile committee decided to seek approval by Oak Haven Cabin
Owners Association and run down Lime Canyon. A short description follows:
The course will stay the same all the way to Rock Springs and go east up
the East Ridge Trail instead of down south to Mill Canyon Aid Station.
The East Ridge trail will bring runners 4 miles back north to the top of
Pot Hollow and then go downhill east 1.5 miles to the Deer Creek road. Do
a left turn there and plod up the "Grump" - a 1.3 mile climb to the Crest
road, Lower Old Goat Junction. Take a left turn there and do a 0.4 mile
climb north to the Lime Canyon exit - right turn off the Crest road. Go
down this trail / ATV road 2 miles to the Firebreak / Water Tank road - a
left turn (about 3 miles to the finish). Follow this road about a mile
through a white gate, up past the water tank and as the road drops east
down the ridge look for a trail heading north off the ridge where it is
about 1.5 miles to the finish (look for a blue ribbon) down the Snowshoe
Base trail. The trail descends into a meadow cuts right through the trees,
comes to a junction with the Ridge Trai!
!
l and drops down crossing straight across a horse trail. Then it drops
down the trail heading north and east and hits a short dirt road and you
turn left heading for the Snake Creek Road across from the Wasatch Mountain
State Park visitor center (there is a large blue dumpster there by the Blue
Boar Inn on the south side of the road. Run the 0.7 miles going east down
the road which turns south becoming Homestead Road to the white gate just
before the Homestead entrance. Go east through the white gate and cut south
again onto the grass and the finish.
Cheers,

I have the USGS quads and was trying to decipher the route. There is one
new quad required I think - Heber City. Anyway, the above description was
not enough for me to be able to precisely determine the exact route, but it
was helpful in identifying the general course direction. Hopefully, they
will be updating the website with more details soon.

Hi Y'all
I need to rent a car in SLC for my Wasatch trip and for my crew to use
. . . any suggestions on what sort of vehicle I should get . . . how
rugged are the roads out there for the crews . . .
Also, if my crew (of one) paces me out of one of the latter aid
stations - is there one that can accomodate a parked car better than
another and/or how easy will it be to retrieve that car?
Thanks for any help - can't wait to get out there . . .
miss
Hello Everyone,
Wasatch is getting close so I've been trying to figure out the
logistics for this race. I'm running without crews or pacers so I'm
particularly interested in things like the availability of
transportation from the finish back to the start. Or to SLC -- I
understand there is a bus from SLC to the start.
Also I will be driving and plan to camp somewhere. Anyone have any
recommendations as to where? Someplace with a shower would be nice.
And does Watach produce a runner's book. If so I've never receieved
one even though I did receive my confirmation. It sure would be nice
to have some maps to study. Plus I'm sure that would answer all
these questions.
Please forgive me if these topics have already been beat to death, I
just signed onto this list.
Thanks,
Carl Jess

Is anyone on this list planning to run the WF100 this year? I was
excited to see that there was a group, but then all the posts are
ancient. Feels lonely in here. :)

I don't know about anyone on this list, but all the Grand Slammers:

This will also be my first official ultra. So, although I am
confident, I have a few questions/concerns about training. I am also
sure I will come up with some WF100 specific questions for people who
have run it in the past. And finally, I am searching for fellow Utah
residents who I might see on the trail this summer.
Thank you all for responding. It is good to know I can find some
fellow crazies if I need to.
