Description

This club was founded on 10.31.00 as a response to the change of venue that resulted in the Westheimer Street Festival (a.k.a. the Mardi Gras of Houston, Texas) ousted from the Lower Westheimer/Montrose, which went into exile on February 17, 2000. Between 5.6.00 - 10.20.02, Allen Parkway was home to an exiled WestFest; however, it lasted for 3 years and 8 months. Dedicated to the 'purists' of the WSF, which includes die-hard fans, partygoers, merchants, and musicians that flock every spring and fall of every year. The WFPO is not affiliated with the Westheimer Street Festival Corporation or any Montrose-area business, activist group, or political organization, and is commonly known since 4.1.02 as the Friends in Defense of the Westheimer Street Festival. Since its creation, this fan club has evolved into a community outreach program that has lobbied politicians and activists - the end result was the liberation of WestFest back to its home - the Lower Westheimer/Montrose District in Summer 2003 during Pride 25.
