i think some members might be interested in the near-weedhopper plans from
midwest engineering for a 2 axis and 3 axis plane that can be built in
60-80 hours each. the 2 axis is a tail dragger and the 3 axis is a
tricycle. these are solid looking designs and the plans seem well
drawn. if money motivation, time and spouse approval ever all come
together, i hope to build one. there is a midwest hot link on my site
http://www.hci.net/~shamblin/ulair.htm. glenn bartel is the guy selling
the plans. good flying! bill shamblin

Hello every body :l
I have a weedhopper simulator but when I got it I thought it would way
better than it is .
On the game the weedhopper looks like a mini-max .
The controls are real jerkey and the game is really a pretty old game .
If you would like to try the game then contact me and I will see if I can
find it for you.

i studied sky pups for a while and they are fascinating little 2
axis planes. i think the design is less cross wind forgiving than the
weedhopper because of the taildragger setup and that main wheels forward
of the
cg cause instability while landing but main wheels behind tend to
straighten you up when you touch down. i talked to the designer and he has
made the plans available to his teenage son to sell for $50 i think. Also

hi darren! so many people are looking for used weedhoppers, it might be
worthwhile to have a virtual weedhopper lot as part of this list. i know
there are several free classifieds for different planes around the
internet. what do others think?? good flying! bill shamblin

Hi all,
I finally got into the air again!!! (First time since Sept. 21) We're having
wonderful weather for Minnesota this year. High temp was 50 today, with light
breeze out of the Southwest, clear skies, and great visibility. I took off
from the neighbor's bean field right next to my house, as it hasn't been
plowed yet. Even though the ground is dry, the field turned out to be softer
than it appeared by walking across the field to check it out before setting up
the Weedhopper. It took about 400 ft. to get off the ground, instead of the
normal 150 ft., so I'll probably continue trailering to the neighbor's 2000
ft. grass strip for further flights. I flew to a friend's strip about 8 miles
away and stopped for a visit. His strip had more activity than usual. (In the
45 minutes I was there, 3 other planes landed) I then returned home to a soft
landing in the bean field. (Landing roll was only about 50 ft.)
Just had to share my joy,
Mike Schweim ... Weedhopper pilot enjoying "winter" in MN.
PS Normal high temp for this time of year, is 30.

I like a 66" 2-blade best with the 447/2.58.
The Austrailian "Brolga" kevlar/composite sold
by Ultraprop in Grass Valley, Ca. is the ruggedess
prop, and fastest I've ever seen on the Weedhopper.
I use 11 degree pitch blocks - run 55 indicated
at 5100 Rpm.

Anyone out there have any experience with weedhoppers on floats? I fly an MX
from floats and unfortunately I have to trailer it. The set-up and take down
is very time consuming so I'm considering a plane with a more simplified
assembly like the Weedhopper for my float flying.

John,
I have always used pins with ss rings to secure the wing struts to the
wing tangs on the axle and wings. I have never used any kind of plugs
like your talking about although I would recommend that if bolts were
used. On the other tube ends however, I chucked a piece of round stock
(wood) in a lathe and sanded it down to fit snug in the tube, cut it
into pieces about 3" long, slid them into the end of the tube and
drilled the hole for the bolt. This has worked much better than the
original plastic plugs. Also, for the plastic washers, I took a 1" hole
saw and cut out several washers out of a sheet of acrovyn which is used
on hand rails and wall guards in hospitals. It's a type of vinyl. In 5
years, I have not had one split like the plastic ones did.
I can't help you with the prop right now because I just bought a 337 for
mine. I'll post which prop I use with it later.

Still using the original Chotia 460. I modified the ignition system from stock
though.
I replaced the flashlight battery box with a 6 volt motorcycle battery, and re
wired so each coil has it's own switch, for preflight operational check of
each coil.

I don't know what they do either. I've heard tractor installations have better
cooling free air with a scoop than with fan cooling, as the fan pushes the air
forward, against ram airflow in tractor installations.

I have a line on three frames and 5 sets of sails. I'll let you know if
it pans out. I fly with the Chotia square head. I have heard horror stories
but I put over 40 hours on it during the summer and never got a burp.
Also be patient the list will grow, To my knowledge there are currently
over 600 Weeds flying out there.
