Mocha Moms is a support group for mothers of color who’ve chosen not to work full-time outside of the home, to devote more time to their families. While many of our members have eliminated employment altogether, others work part-time, flex-time, night shifts, have home-based businesses, consult or freelance from home or have chosen alternative, less demanding career paths so that they are more available to their families.
Founded in August 2004, the West Contra Costa Mocha Moms group (WCCMM) supports a diverse group of families with like values. WCCMM supports the 7 pillars of the Mocha Moms platform: Non-Exclusivity, Community Activism, Support for Work-at-Home mothers, Non-partisanship, Strong Commitment to Marriage, Self-Care, & The Education of our Children. Our goal is to help moms better care for themselves, their families, & each other. We do this though our Babysitting Cooperative, "Moms Only" Outings, Support Groups, Play Groups & Family Events.
WCCMM is also open to mothers who have chosen to work outside the home & to all mothers who are raising children of color. We believe this expansion of the traditional Mocha Moms structure provides additional support for mothers who share our philosophy but who are also faced with the extra challenge of balancing a work life outside the home. We believe that mothers who are raising children of color are also part of the sisterhood we have formed. WCCMM focuses on providing support & resources to mothers who live close enough to one another to help out in a "jiffy". The geographic boundaries of WCCMM are the cities of Martinez (north), El Cerrito (south), Richmond (west), & El Sobrante (east). This area ensures all members live within a reasonable driving distance of about 15 minutes. Living close to one another also helps foster a greater sense of community, concentrates our community service efforts to a mutual geography & enables the sharing of information which is relevant to all the WCCMM mothers.
