I've always wanted to be a writer, and indeed that's what I'm "supposed"
to be right now. When I was young, and had first read Watership Down, I
did indeed often think about writing sequels or Downs related tales.
Sadly, the things I wrote back then all dissappeared one day. I used to
keep them in a blue briefcase, which just vanished. My parents weren't the
type to throw my stuff out, so it's always been a kind of mystery where
that thing went. In any case, I never in my later years ever re-attempted
anything like that. Maybe I should. In the past ten years, the closest I've
come to writing about rabbits is playing text-based internet roleplay
games. MUSH, MUD, MOO, that sort of thing. When working at the University
of Florida, I had a job at the Center for Excellence in Teaching, and we
used a web environment to teach freshman writing, communication, etc.

One of the tools we used was MOO. I got permission to set up a MUSH, as
well, which is my prefered database type for these kinds of things. On
that MUSH I rebuilt the Downs and my friends and I used to roleplay in the
Honeycomb, and on the Downs, and even all the way to the River Test, the
Enborne, Efrafa and beyond. We had a great deal of fun. Some played book
characters, and some made their own rabbits. A friend of mine played
'Leaf', who we designed to be one of Fiver's children. It was alot of fun.

This I can't really answer, but it brings to mind a question that has
interested me for many many years. In that same story, Frith restores the
things El-ahrairah lost to the Black Rabbit during his gambles. When he
comes to the ears, Frith says:

"You may find the ears slightly strange at first. I put a little
starlight in them, but it is really quite faint: not enough, I am sure, to
give away a clever thief like you."

Thus, it can be assumed that El-ahrairah's ears glowed after this incident
with a faint silver light. And, if you check the end of the book, when
Hazel is visited just before he dies, the rabbit there is only identified
when his ears were "shinning with a faint silver light". Now, when I first
read the book--I don't know, maybe I just wasn't thinking--but I assumed
the rabbit that came to take Hazel away was Inle-Rah, the Black Rabbit.
All the tales say, when he calls you, you have to go. It is his job, to
see that all meet their fate. For, what is is what must be. So, I
*assumed* it was the Black Rabbit. But then I discovered this single line,
refering to the silvery ears, that's when it first hit me that the rabbit
that came for Hazel was El-ahrairah. But it is not El-ahrairah's job to
come for the dying. So why did he? Or maybe, more importantly, I should
ask this: did Mr. Adams purposely obscure this identity in order to
mix the two rabbits together? We see in another part of the book where
adventures of Hazel's, and the other Down Rabbtis, have become muddled and
mixed into tales of El-ahrairah. Is this, then, another such allusion by
Mr. Adams? It would not surprise me if that were so, and I've spent far
too many hours, I think, contemplating the meanings that could be
extrapolated from El-ahrairah and Inle-Rah being the same entity. :)

Actually, given the tendancy for lapine names to come from botonical sources,
I'd say Rosemary is already a fine lapine name :) come to think of it, the more
I read and look into it, almost ALL of the lapine names come from either
botonical sources or else are simply connections of lapine words (such as
Thethuthinnang). The only possible exception I can come up with offhand is
perhaps Blackavar. Any others? Even Silverweed is an actual plant, although I
think it's more of a dark suggestion of the snares. Someday, I'll need to
update my Lapine Botony page :)

Hiyas Terry! I'm new too <G>

<stuff snipped>

One of my goals in life is to one day go to England and make the WD
pilgrimage. I think it's so cool that all the places in the book are real.
You don't see that very often. Dunno when I'll actually be able to do it
though.. probably not for awhile. Oh well.. I do enjoy the pictures you
have on your page Terry!

Hello, list. I'm Terry Ballard. I first read WD when it came out in the
1970's. Bought a copy of the first American edition when it hit the
bookstores, and was instantly hooked. The next year, we made our first
trip to England, and made it a point to visit the Down, which is only
about 90 minutes from London by train and bus. At the time, there were
just no provisions for people to make that type of pilgrimage, although
the top of the down is public park area and a very popular place to walk.
I took a lot of pictures, which got displayed at the time in the
library where I worked. Then they sat in a drawer for 20 years until the
web came along and I got to share all of this with all of you at
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/3632/literary.htm. Recently, I
heard from a gentleman in Basingstoke named Martin Wheatley. He can see
WD from his back yard, and he has given me a treasure-trove of new
pictures - some of which I have started to add.
I'm happy to report that there is still huge enthusiasm for the book
out there. I've gotten a lot of praise for my page that really should be
directed at one Richard Adams.
Now, I'm a computer services librarian at Quinnipiac College in
Connecticut. My other favorite writers include Mark Twain, John Steinbeck
and Samuel Beckett. Cheers.

Cool.. I'm gonna like it around here! <G> Okies, everbody gather 'round.
I'll start off by warning you that I'm no where near as good a story-teller
as Dandelion, but I try! :) Lessee.. it was the summer before ninth
grade.. <counts back how many years ago that was> 1993. We had a big
family vacation coming up. We were gonna drive across half the country and
back again in a week. As you can guess, this meant lots of car time. So,
the week before this vacation I went to the library in search of a book to
read to help pass all the time. However, I am a picky reader, so I never
found a book that suited me. A few days before we left my dad came home
from work with a book for me from his sister <my Aunt>. I looked at the
book and decided right away that I was NOT going to read this book during
our vacation. It had not plot description ANYWHERE and there was a RABBIT
on the cover!! Of course, this led be to believe it was a book about
rabbits, thus it did not interest me. And so we went on our vacation and I
brought that book along, just to bring it along. I decided to also bring
with a Star Trek: The Next Generation book that I had and had not read yet
<that book remains uncompleted to this day> And so we got back a week
later and of course I had not read the book that my Aunt had supplied.
However, I had this mentality where I HAD to read every book that I own
just for the sake of saying that I've read EVERY book that I own. And so,
a week or so before school started again, I decided I would read this book,
Watership Down.

WOW!!!

I got to the second page and declared that this book was gonna be something
special. I read almost constanly over the next however many days it took
to finish the story. I stayed up late at night.. I even got up early in
the morning! When I finally finished, and closed the book with tears in my
eyes, I knew that this was the best book I had ever read, and that remains
true to this day.

That's my story :)

Oh, I totally know what you're talking about! I am a HUGE fan of the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!! It wasn't until I got on the internet about
2 years ago and joined the TMNT mailing list that I met any other TMNT
fans!! Now I consider a bunch of thse people best friends, it's really
cool :)

Here's a question.. does this List have any sort of of "Welcome Questions?"
On the TMNT List, when you join you are asked to answer a set of questions
so that people can know a little about you and your TMNT fandom. If there
isn't one already, I'd be willing to volunteer to make one up for people on
this List to answer. Then if someone wanted they could put up everyone's
answers on a web page or something <I've been wanting to do this for a LONG
time for the TMNT List, but because someone else is working on it and HAS
been working on it since LAST SUMMER, I can't.. :P> This would help
newbies feel a little more at home since they would know everyone else's
answers since everyone else just saw their answers. The TMNT List had
about 20 people on it when I first joined and it now has around 90. You
hear a lot from the newbies about how they don't feel welcome and such...
just an idea <coming from a newbie herself.. <G>>

Wow.. I wrote a lot. I'll stop now :) However, I do have more WD stories
that I can tell.. ooohh... like, the first time I saw the movie.. and the
many hours I've spent at the public library looking up information on the
book... papers I've written... stuff like that :)

See ya aroud the warren :)

Rosemary
my nickname in the TMNT chat room is Roseangelo .. hehe Hrmm.. wonder if
you could combine my name to make a good WD name .. hmmm

Fortunately it's easier to find more Watership Down fans online than it is
to find fellow fans of other some of things that one enjoys. For instance,
I'm a fan of the critically condemned TV show Battlestar Galactica and the
80's music group Asia. Until I got on the internet, I thought I was the
only person in the world who enjoyed this show and this rock group. But to
get online and find really enthusiastic fans of the same movies or TV shows
or musicians or books you yourself enjoy is a thrill beyond description!

I belong to a mailing list for writers of "fanfiction" devoted to the TV
series Battlestar Galactica (moderated by Sanna Guerin, a member of this
list), and I have read all kinds of fanfiction dealing with other books,
movies or TV shows. I got to wondering: has anyone here ever tried to
write their own stories based upon Watership Down, or does anyone here know
of anyone who has written such stories? I'd love to read some.

I thought a long, long time ago about a story involving Woundwort after the
attack on Watership Down, and even sat down last night and started working
on the story. If I ever get it completed, I'll submit it to the list to see
what everyone thinks.

Wow. That's an interesting idea. Upon thinking about it, though. I don't
think it is. Consider the layout of Efrafa, then consider which is more
defensible. In my opinion, the Down site offers much more in the way of
defensibility. Perhaps Woundwort wasn't yet the military genius he was to
become later, but taken just as is, I think I'd prefer the Down site. If
it was a matter of digging, I don't see that as what would drive them off
the Downs. Woundwort had females with him, and even if he didn't, we know
that he is not above changing tradition and natural order to get what he
wants, so making bucks dig wouldn't be something he'd let stop him.

I got the impression when reading the chapter that it was just a group of
hlessil, bucks probably, that didn't fancy digging and so moved on.

I don't think it's a dislike for Italians. I think Mr. Adams just chose to
have a particularly meek mouse, not to characterize all mice in this
light. I think Jeff had the right of it, in that he was just trying to
show the differences in the species. Notice the rabbits of Efrafa have an
accent, but they still speak Lapine. Whereas the mouse, Kehaar, and the
other animals don't. What they speak is a kind of 'hedgerow' language.
I think Mr. Adams was just trying to get across that there /is/ a language
barrier here, as well as cultural barriers. It just adds to the story in
my opinion. As for the choice of accents for the animals, that's another
question altogether. Mr. Adams served in World War Two, where he no doubt
had dealings with Germans and Italians. It's an interesting question.

First, I'd like to thank Michael for this list. I'll be sure to pass it on
to all my friends. Let me just take a moment here to introduce myself to
everyone.

Name: D. M. Snyder

My first name's Donna, the M stands for Marie. I use the name
InleRah on the internet. I've used it from the beginning, way back in 1989
when I got my first University of Florida VAX account. For those that
don't immediately recognize it, it's the Black Rabbit's Lapine name,
(with all the dashes, spaces, or accent marks taken out). I took the name
back then because it seemed the appropriate thing to do. It fit the number
of characters I needed for a name, and it fit the general theme of VAX
names in that time and place. But since then it's become more than just a
handle. In some strange way it's taken on a meaning of its own for me. I
answer to it even in RL, and yes there are people who use it to identify
me. Anyway, I'm as much Inle as I am Donna. Feel free to use either when
refering to me.

Age: 32

That's not exactly true. I'll be 32 tomorrow. :) I was born May
9th, 1966. And yes, I was a bit awed to find out Mr. Adams and I share the
same birthday, if some 46 years apart. He's not the only one I share the
day with. I have a younger brother, Thomas, who was also born on May 9th,
in the year 1969. His best friend, Sean Dane Hurley, shares that same day
with him. And, an internet friend of mine shares it too. I just seem to
keep running into people born on that day.

Stats: Single, I'll spare you the physical description. :)

Current Obsession: Babylon 5

I saw the pilot, way back in 1992, or whenever it was that it
aired. I didn't like it all that much, so I never bothered to watch the
show. As the years went by, it seemed that all my friends were absorbed
into this great obsession, 'Babylon 5'. I was missing out on something
wonderful, apparently, but they all warned me it was too late to start
watching now. I'd never understand any of it. So, I waited patiently and
hoped someone would have all the tapes so I could watch them someday, and
I avoided getting into the show. Then, last year right around this time,
they started airing the two Star Trek shows, Voyager and DS9, at 8 and 10
respectively. Well, that left an hour to kill between the two shows. Not
enough time to go get involved in something else, but too much time to
just do nothing, so I wound up flipping channels. That's when I discovered
B5 came on at 9, right between the other two shows. Ooh, how convenient.
Only I wasn't supposed to be watching. I'd never understand what was going
on. Well, they were right. I caught several episodes of the second half of
season four last year, and even though much of it was hard to follow
because I didn't know who all these people were, I grasped enough to
become completely absorbed. So when TNT picked up the show and began the
rebroadcasts this January, I was all set to go. I've seen all the episodes
so far, and have enjoyed the ride thoroughly. All my friends are peeved
though, because I got 4 years in 5 months. No waiting, no cliffhangers, no
problem. :) Heh. Er, I'm rambling now. On to the next subject.

As I said above, my current obsession is B5, but before B5 it was
The X-files. I loved X-files. I've been fairly dissapointed with the last
two seasons, but overall I love the show. The only other tv shows I watch
are Voyager and DS9, but only if the mood takes me. If the TV's on and I'm
not watching those, I'm watching Sportscenter, The History Channel, The
Discovery Channel, PBS, or A&E. Invariably, if I sit down, one of those
things winds up on the screen.

Favorite books? Well, there's the obvious. How I came by Watership
Down is explained on my web page: http://www.ucet.ufl.edu/~dms/water.html
But, I'll say here that I could never count the times I've read it cover
to cover. More often than not, however, I'll just pick it up and read some
passage or a chapter. Since first reading it back in 1982, I've never been
far from a copy of it. It goes with me wherever I go. Beyond Watership, my
tastes vary. When I was young, in my teens and early twenties, I read a
lot of Stephen King. I was in love with the way King wrote. His
characters, description, and narrative style fascinated me. Since then, I
think my tastes have changed, because I don't read much King anymore, and
when I go back and look at my favorites from him, they seem diminished.
Funny, that's never happened to me with Watership. If there's an exception
to that, it has to be Stephen King's novella 'The body'. Published in the
collection of novellas called 'The Four Seasons', the Body was also made
into a wonderful film by CastleRock Pictures and Rob Reiner. To this day,
I still think it's some of the best King ever wrote. Of course, there's
the Stand, which mentions Watership Down by name, too. :)

The only other 'modern' authors I'd mention would be Orson Scott
Card, Thomas Berger, and of course, Mr. Tolkien. I could think of more,
but that's enough. My greatest passions, however, are in older authors.
Shelley, Keats, Byron, Wordsworth, Robert Burns, Dickinson, William Blake.
I have a particular adoration for Brother Kipling's works. More than
anything in the world, though, I love Shakespeare.

Tidbits:

Let's see. I'm a member of the SCA. I'm an addicted MUSHER, (still
in denial, not recovery). I live in a place called Jupiter, Florida. I'm a
writer, sort of, currently working on screenplay. And I'll explain any/all
of that in private email if you're interested. I think I've rambled on
enough here about off-topic things. In fact, I think I've rambled enough
period. Thanks again for the list Michael.

In the novel, the "General Woundwort" chapter tells how young Woundwort
found a small warren after escaping from his human keeper. I just had a
curious thought the other day. It is mentioned that after becoming leader
of this warren, he and his rabbits left this place to found a new warren
that became Efrafa.

Could this small warren have been the abandoned burrows Hawkbit discovered
when the Sandleford rabbits arrived at the top of Watership Down?

The mouse had what could best be described as an Italian accent. The
portrayal of the mouse wasn't exactly favorable, so I wonder if Adams has a
dislike for Italians?

I don't think it's anything dark and mysterious.. more of just a way of showing
difference in species. Of course, with Keehar it made sense, but the Italian
accent with the mice sort of through me. Mob connections perhaps? The mouse
did say that he could get information for the rabbits and do them favors. All
in all, I liked it though if only cause it lent flavor to the non-lapine
characters

I'll probably never have anything bad to say about the first book, but I do
have a few problems with Tales. Mostly wishing it had been more of a true
sequel, or at least written in chronological order.

And so it begins...

Well, here's the obligatory info about myself so you can all say you
knew me before I was famous..
Real Name: Jeff Verzak
Homeland: Chicago Suburbia (now that I know Michael lives in Quincy, I
can find him and break his knees if he says anything I don't like about
the book ;) )
Fav Books: Besides the obvious, some of my favorites include Art
Speigelman's Maus, David Sosnowski's Rapture, Sharon Shinn's Archangel,
Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, the entire Kathe Koja collection of
contemporary horror and some others I can't think of at the moment.
Age: 25
Day Job: Asst. Manager for a landscaping design firm

Ok, enough about me. I invite you all to check out my Watership Down
site at http://www.inil.com/users/edamoth/water.html if I haven't had
the honor of seeing you there already. As well, I invite any
suggestions on ways to improve it. One thing several people have asked
for is literary criticisms of the novel and aspects of it. Now, I work
some 10 hours a day, 7 days a week so I don't have time to be thinking
up a half dozen criticisms, so I invite anyone who's perhaps written a
paper for class, wrote a paper because they're really weird and like
writing papers or whatever to send it to me. Here's hoping for the best
for the list!

Well, I don't have any real idea, but I imagine that if you read "Rowsby
Woof and the Fairy Wogdog" chapter, you might find a clue hidden somewhere.
Personally, after reading Tales From Watership Down I tend to think that
Frith gave Rabscuttle the gift of immortality in order to allow the trusty
Owlsa captain to forever accompany El-ahrairah on adventures.

Just going to say a little "hello!" before I have to run off to do more
"educational" things.

My name is Sanna Guerin, and I just finished reading "Watership Down" for
the first time today. I just wanted to say thanks to Michael for both
sending me the book, and for getting me to read it. It was a great read,
and I'll more than likely get a copy of "Tales from Watership Down" after
Intercession.

Looking forward to the conversation!

Hello there Watership Down fans... I have one question around my head, and maybe
you could help me...
Do you remember that story that our hero El-hrairah and Rubscutle went to meet
the Black Rabbit? Well, when they come back to their warren, Frith gave
El-hrairah a pair of new ears, but when Dandelion was going to say what we had
for Rubscuttle, he didnt finish his story... I always wondered what gift we gave
Rubscutle... Anyone have a guess?

quite surprise by this wonderfull movie. So after the movie I looked for the

We now have hrair subscribers, thanks to hrairoo@... (guess Hrairoo's
really living up to the namesake of Fiver, eh :-)).

I guess we can begin by introducing ourselves, which is a custom of some
mailing lists I've seen. Here's some trivial information about me:

NAME: Michael Glenn Passmore

AGE: 32 (Born on December 24, 1965).

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 5'11" tall, medium build, medium brown hair, green
eyes with streaks of beige and blue.

LOCATION: Quincy, Illinois.

STATUS: Married for seven years. No kids (thanks, Doc, for the vasectomy!),
but we have one tortoiseshell cat named Stormy (she looks like a puffy
little storm cloud and behaves like one, too).

FAVORITES:

TV Shows - Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Wiseguy, Cheers, Frasier, Wings,
Red Dwarf, New Red Green, Miami Vice, Are You Being Served?, Monty Python,
Highlander, V miniseries, Underdog.

Movies - Braveheart, Sparticus, Star Wars trilogy, Highlander, True Lies,
Rocky I-III, Die Hard, Rob Roy, Watership Down and most anything with Clint
Eastwood, John Wayne or Harrison Ford.

Music - Classical overtures, piano sonatas and romantic symphonies; bagpipe
music; synthesized instrumental music; rock music by Asia/John Wetton,
Boston, Chicago, ELP, Journey/Steve Perry, Kansas, Moody Blues, Bob Seger,
38 Special; country music by George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash.

Books - Richard Adams' Watership Down and Tales From Watership Down, Martin
Caidin and Saburo Sakai's Samurai!, Alan Brennert's Kindred Spirits, Bernard
Cornwell's Richard Sharpe novels.

Hobbies/Interests - Railroads, military history (primarily the Revolutionary
War, World War II, the Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars), fencing, target
shooting, tornadoes, reading, writing. Eventually I hope to get into
historic reenacting.

I first read Watership Down when in 1982 after seeing and enjoying the movie
on cable. Since then I have read the novel and its "sequel" Tales From
Watership Down more times than I can count. It is without a doubt my
all-time favorite novel, and it is my opinion that when future literary
scholars sit down to compile their lists of great 20th Century literature,
Watership Down will be high on the list.

News! News!

I just received two more responses today from people interested in joining
the list. Hopefully they will subscribe soon, and we can really begin
discussing Watership Down. In less than a week, I have received nine
favorable responses to the idea of a Watership Down mailing list, which is
greater than I had anticipated!

I have a feeling that as word spreads about the list, we will see more and
more people joining up. When we get a few more people signed up, we can all
start out by introducing ourselves to the other list members.

Watership Down Discussion List Policies

The Watership Down E-mail Discussion Group (watershipdown@...) is
operated by Michael Passmore (mgpjlp@...) through the generosity of
Makelist.
---------------------------------------------
Introduction

I recently introduced a dear internet friend of mine to Watership Down, and
during our discussions about the novel, I hit upon the idea of creating an
e-mail discussion list for fans of the novels and the movie. I have
belonged to two mailing lists devoted to the 1978-79 ABC TV science fiction
series Battlestar Galactica, and for the most part I have thoroughly enjoyed
my experiences on those lists. I enjoy meeting people online who share my
interests, and I figured what better way to meet and interact with fellow
Watership Down fans than by starting an e-mail discussion list.

The purpose of this mailing is to give fans of Watership Down a forum for
discussing the two novels and the 1978 animated movie. I think we can have
some interesting conversations about the world that is Watership Down. We
can talk about what we liked about Watership Down, what we disliked, and
what we wish could have been. There may be fans out there who have written
their own stories continuing the Watership Down saga, and I for one would
welcome such stories being posted on the list. And since Watership Down is
a saga featuring rabbits, I don't see any problem with talk about rabbit
behavior being discussed as well. In addition, talk about Richard Adams and
his other works are acceptable as well.

Archives of postings to this list can be found at
http://www.findmail.com/list/watershipdown/

Removal Policies

This is supposed to be a friendly and constructive environment for everyone.
Inappropriate posts (such as spamming, flaming, etc.) will not be tolerated.
Two warnings will be issued to the offender, and if the problem persists,
he/she will be removed from the list. In regards to spamming, I do not
consider an advertisement for one's Watership Down site to be considered as
spam.
---------------------------------------------
Posting Netiquette and Rules

Since not everyone on the internet has advanced computers with e-mail
readers capable of handling HTML, all posts to the list should be in plain
text.

Also, please do not send attachments to the list since not every e-mail
reader can handle them.

When replying to a post, please include only the relevant parts of that post
instead of including the entire message.

Off topic threads may be occasionally brought up as long as they are
relevent in some way to Watership Down.

Also, since Watership Down has fans of all ages, we should keep in mind that
there may be young subscribers to the list, and as such, we should avoid
using profanity in our posts.

Subject lines of the post should be about the topic of discussion. Once the
discussion changes from the established topic, please change the header to
reflect this.

Signature files should be no longer than 10 lines, please.

Always sign your posts. We like to know who we're talking to.

When you join the list, please introduce yourself to the others.

And most importantly -- enjoy your stay! Without you, there wouldn't be a
list!
