Right. *Pipkin-style gulp*
I have a couple of little announcements to make - well, one's more a
confession, really. I've been thinking about this for a while, but
the (very interesting) recent discussion about fanfic has pushed me
over the line, as it were, as it touches on that, and my (and
Cathie's) recent writing about life and death has made me think
pretty hard as well. Here we go, then:
AndrewB and Loganberry are one and the same person. Blackavar's Gift,
That Nature Yet Remembers and Hazel's Devotion are all mine.
I have a shrewd suspicion that I'm not the only person here who
already knew (or, at least, suspected) that - but maybe I'm reading
too much into what certain people have said. It's not at all unusual
for writers to have more than one pseudonym, of course, but in my
case things are a little more complicated. The reasons for that are
tied up with my second comment, which is this:
I'm a fur. In other words, a furry lifestyler.
Yes, I know what I said months ago in my "superwaffle", but that was
then and this is now. If you've been paying attention, it shouldn't
come as too much of a shock anyway. Given that I've been quite open
about the fact for several months now on Usenet, in emails, on my
website and on both ffnet and fpnet (and the sharp-eyed amongst you
might have noticed a Furry Code quietly slipped into a post of mine a
little while back), it seems ridiculous not to mention it here,
especially as it has a major bearing on how I see rabbits, WD ones
included. The reason I find it easy to write from a lapine point of
view is that, in some ways, it's what I do all the time.
I don't intend to go into enormous detail on this Group as to what I
mean by that statement. Not because I mind talking about it - far
from it - but because it would take much too long (and email is more
appropriate anyway for anyone who would like to discuss the issue).
But it's relevant here because Watership Down played a significant
part in my coming to that conclusion, and because it increased yet
further my already sky-high opinion of the book. I can't believe
anyone could have done a better job than Richard Adams in
understanding just what it is to be a rabbit. For
what seems like the 749th time, WD has changed my life, and as usual,
much for the better. Maybe I should add a W+++++ option! =;)
I used the AndrewB pseudonym before Loganberry, because I was only
just beginning to understand what being furry meant when I first
started writing about WD and rabbits, and frankly I was worried about
anyone else knowing who (and what?) I was. To take an example, "That
Nature Yet Remembers" is a poem about a human longing to live the
lapine life. I said in my summary to it that the narrator was "not,
for the most part, me", but frankly that was a cover, as was the
(quite terrible) first stanza. The narrator *is* me, just as it is
in "FLR".
Right then, enough emotional agonising. What you really want to know
is: when is that embleer fool going to get the next chapter
of "Blackavar's Gift" up? Well... er... good question. The problem is
that I've had half a chapter for a while now, but it doesn't quite
make sense yet. And there's just so much else to do. I seem to
remember someone telling me a while ago that WD was taking over my
life. Oh, yes, indeed. It fills most of my spare time these days. But
I don't mind that a bit. The only downside is that if you try to
juggle too many balls at once, some of them tend to bop you on the
nose!
Over the next few days, I'll be moving all the WD-related stuff on
ffnet and fpnet under AndrewB's name over to the Loganberry account,
so expect a bit of upheaval for a week or so. I'll keep the AndrewB
account active, though, with a pointer to mine, to avoid confusion,
and I expect I'll keep that Roman story ("Best and Greatest") on
AndrewB's fpnet account, as a) people sometimes whinge about empty
accounts, and b) it's not very good! =;)
Finally, I have to say one other thing. My "Bible-bashing" comment to
Justin about RogueFanKC's "The CrossBearer" was out of order. I
normally try very hard to avoid offending people about their beliefs -
after all, my own are hardly mainstream, as you've now seen. I'm
sorry.
Now, back to whatever the lapine equivalent is of the grindstone! =;)
Frithaes,
Loganberry.
