Jim:
I have yet to compile the list of volleyball camps...everyone is starting so
early this year...I usually have this by the end of May or early early June.
This is what I know now...PLU in Tacoma has a camp and so does Seattle
University. As for local high school camps, I am not sure since many of them
do camps for their locale only. You might want to check with the high school
coaches in Puyallup, Tacoma, and Olympia.
I will forward this request on to others who may know of camps in your area
as well. Let me know how far you will travel and how much you are willing to
spend...there are camps at Gonzaga, Washington State, Stanford, UC Berkeley,
Hawai'i, etc. for all ages and all expertise...so, please keep in touch and I
will do likewise...Coach 'T' (Diane Taniguchi)
My 11 yo daughter will be entering 6th grade. She has played one
year
of CYO 5/6 grade VB and one tourney. She lives in Puyallup.
I saw a note somewhere that Coach Diane T on this site has a list of
camps etc. Any help?
Thanks!
Stacy:
What level of camp do you want to attend? Adults, Juniors, Youth? How much
are you willing to pay? How far are you willing to travel? What is your
level of play? Do you want a generic skills camp or a setter's camp?
Please send bio and I will try to find you a few camps which will meet your
needs.
So far, I know that Seattle University and Pacific Lutheran U (Tacoma) have
camps in June and July...Email back your address and I will get you on my
list for updated camps...thankx...Diane Taniguchi (Coach 'T')
I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any volleyball clinics and camps
that are going on between now and August? I am desperately trying to find
out about some so I can go to them! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
-Stacy :-)

From todays LA Times, 4/5/00
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego State will drop men's volleyball after
this school year as part of a cost-cutting
measure, reducing its men's varsity sports to
the minimum of six for NCAA Division I
members.
Coach Jack Henn, in his 17th season as Aztecs coach, will
remain at the school until his contract expires in
June.
Rick Bay, who has been athletic director at four schools for a
total of 16 years, said it was the first time he's had to drop a
sport. Bay has a background in another non-revenue
producing sport, wrestling, so he said this was a
painful decision. "But our budget situation is one that
requires us to make significant cuts," Bay said
Tuesday.
Men's volleyball has been a varsity sport at SDSU since 1967,
and the program produced the school's only national championship,
in 1973. With the school unable to give the
program adequate financial support, the Aztecs haven't had a
winning season since 1994.
---
There are currently only 23 Mens Division I volleyball programs,
and a total of 81 NCAA Mens volleyball programs.
There are 307 Womens Division I volleyball programs, and a
total of 971 NCAA Womens volleyball programs.

As for co-ed (mixed six) volleyball, there are many fitness clubs which
have their own teams/leagues. Adult Volleyball Education has their
league at the old Queen Anne High School gym on the top of Queen Anne
Hill. Seattle Sports Club has leagues three times a year. Some events
are listed on Tuesday's Seattle PI's (space available only) You're
Invited column under volleyball.
Tournaments are usually fundraisers, and sometimes freindship
tournaments in the fall only. For summer play, there are quads on sand
and grass (tourneys only) and the 'biggee' for sand is at Seaside,
Oregon in the middle of August. It is a very well attended event and
has been around for quite some time. Many, many Seattle volleyball
folks go there just to play iln the sand with the Pacific Ocean pounded
in your ear at one end. It is a GREAT tourney. If you need more info,
contact the Chamber of Comnmerce in Seaside, OR, sorry I have no
contacts there any more. Room reservations are probably gone by now as
we always made ours when we left the previous year (August to August).
Just to watch is fun too...especially now that they have added the pros.
If you need further assistance, please let me know.
For those of you interested in USA Volleyball, please see message No.
11 or 12 in regards to USA Volleyball, Puget Sound Region. For any
other region, please call the same number [206) 264-9941)] and they can
refer you to the offices of the other regions across the
country...comes in handy when you move.
As for competitive women's play, USA Volleyball and the Adult Education
classes are the only two sources I know of who house women's programs.
Again, I would like to invite anyone who is interested to come to the
regionals in late April and find out about the teams which exist
currently so you can filter in. Seattle has been noted to be very
selective in their process of volleyball groups and if you do not know
anyone, it is difficult to 'break in'. Plan to explain your bio so
that teams will know how much volleyball you have had in the past so
they can try you out and see if you fit.
In the past, I was able to do this weeding process, but now that I am
on 6 local and national advisory boards, coaching in two clubs and
possibly three currently, coordinating 15 middle schools, coordinating
the volleyvan and workig 3 part-time jobs, I have no time left. Maybe
it is time to do a 'round out' again so teams can pick out players...I
will see what I can do in this area for next season which starts in
November. Remind me in August when I am steeped in high school
volleyball.
If you ladies would prefer, I could arrange a time on sand courts this
summer and see if you can find a team or make a team yourselves. Let
me know what you would like to do. I will try to keep this website
full of volleyball information for our state, and especially for the
Seattle matches.

For those of you who want to improve and become better at volleyball in
the Seattle area, check out the Adult Volleyball Education folks at
Queen Anne High School Gym (old school now a condo) on the top of Queen
Anne Hill, abouat 6 blocks east of the community center. Gene Burt
runs a 'school' for all levels as individuals and as teams. Old gym,
but great play...I will contact him to have you listed on his mailing
address for the spring quarter classes, if you want.
For those of you who want USAV club play, contact the USAV Puget Sound
Region office at 206) 264-9941. The regionals are coming up and the
season is almost over, but it might be beneficial to come to regionals
and get your name (and ability) out there so next season or over the
summer, you can start at the beginning. USAV, PSR covers Western
Washington from the Canadian border down to Battle Ground, from the
Pacific Ocean to the Cascades and all cities/towns in between for
players 10 to 100...male or female...be prepared to try out if needed.
For those of you who want summer league play, contact Scott
Baumler...he is listed in the white pages of your Seattle phone book.
He runs the 'engineering league' for informal (rec) and formal (power
and intermediate) play.
For those of you who want to play doubles sand or doubles grass
tourneys, contact John Littleman at Northwest Volleyball. See the
Tuesday PI sports under You're Invited for phone number...sorry I don't
have it handy at this time. He also has European trips for players...
For those of you who want to play doubles or quads in sand over the
summer on a drop in basis, please let me know and I will get you
connected.
Anything else I can help you with??? Contact me at Volleyball Mania.
Coaches and refs are welcomed, too...we NEED refs...paid positions...
I would be very interested in playing vball on a much more competitive level.
Currently, I play open gyms only, with the occasion league play. I am enjoying
myself;
however, would really get more out of it if I was playing with a higher caliber
level of
players. I can be reached at 206-353-1629 or at this email address. Thank you.

I have been trying to find a volleyball league to play on in the Seattle area
without any luck. I want to play competitive women's volleyball or co-ed.
It is very difficult to find information anywhere. It seems there are a lot
of junior teams for high school and college kids, but what about adults?
Please let me know if you know of any competitive teams.
Thanks
