Thanks to all those who helpfully responded to my question about bus
transportation for Convention 2001. We'll use the bus service for the 4 days
provided so far by the convention planners (June 26, 27, 28, 29) but are
still interested in transportation to the events before and after these four
days if anyone is organizing such. Thanks again, all!

Today (approx. 11 days later) my book arrived in the mail with a note from
Kim Rodriguez. Someone had turned in my book and she mailed it to me. I
want to bless both the finder and Kim for sending it to me. With one event
per week it takes me 8 months to complete a book... it was a very sad
experience losing my book. You can bet I will be more careful in the future.

For those of you who are interested. The EC meeting will start at 8
a.m. on February 16. You will have to check with the hotel when you
get there for the meeting room. David Stewart said that he did not
know the name of the room.

According to the International Calendar there is not an IVV organization in
Hong Kong, nor to the best of my knowledge is there an IVV independent club
there.

seka@...

Hi Everyone,

A little while back, someone was asking about the availability of very long
walks (50K-100K) in the U.S. I think. Today I ran across a neat web site
for the C&O Canal 50K/100K One Day Hike from Washington, DC to Harpers
Ferry, WV on Saturday May 5, 2001: http://members.tripod.com/~onedayhike/ .
You could even theoretically get AVA credit for what you walk if you plan
ahead and pre-register for the C&O Canal YRE (see Maryland in Starting Point
2001) although there isn't any official connection between the AVA and this
event, I think. This extra-long walk is too much for me to try at this
point -- and plus I'm busy that weekend, but perhaps others may be
interested.

I was lucky enough to walk two segments of the C&O Canal last year for
credit, and since the YRE is available all year this year, I'm very excited
to be signing up for all 16 segments in 2001. Those walks last spring were
absolutely my favorite -- such beautiful sights -- the Potomac River, the
wildflowers, the wildlife, the peacefulness. Hope to see some of you out on
the canal trail this year!

The annual Cedarville weekend event will be held March 24/25, 2001 this
year. The 2001
Cedarville State Forest event is currently listed in the Virginia section of
the AVA web page for
events. This is a Maryland event as always. This event is held by the
Washington DC Area
Volksmarching Club, and formerly was part of the March for Parks program.
This event
continues to be held to support Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine,
Maryland. The start point
is located in Prince George's County, but most of each of the trails are in
Charles County, and are
considered to be CHARLES County walks for the Walk Across Maryland program.

Start: Cedarville State Forest between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.; finish by 4 p.m.
both Saturday and
Sunday. The Start Point will be Pavilion #2 as it has been for the past
several years. There will
be one 10K event trail available. A short trail will also be available.

Award: B Award event ($3.00). May be done for Credit Only ($2.00) or for
Free.

Note: The normal $2.00 entrance fee to enter Cedarville is waived for
participants for this
weekend only. The Club will make an event donation to the Park for this
event.

Refreshments: The Friends of Cedarville will provide food. Water and candy
will be available at
the control point.

Conditions: Pets are welcome, but must be kept on a leash at all times.
Trail rating is 2. The trail
will mostly be on natural surfaces, and the trail rating will increase in
the event of inclement
weather.

Directions: From the Washington Capital Beltway, take exit 7A, Maryland
Route 5 South. After
about 12 miles, and merger with US Route 301, Turn Left on Cedarville Road.

From the North and South; use US Route 301 to Cedarville Road, located north
of Waldorf, MD.

On Cedarville Road - Travel about 2 miles to Right Turn on Bee Oak Road at
entrance sign to
Cedarville State Forest. Travel on Bee Oak Road, to the second stop sign
(the first will be the
stop Sign at the DNR Police station where entrance fee pay box is located)
at Forest Road. Turn
left at the Stop sign to the event parking. There will be signs to guide
you.

The YRE Box for the 2 YRE events will be located in the Park for this
weekend only, and the
two trails will be available. One is a natural surface trail, and one is a
paved trail which can be
used, if desired, in the case of inclement weather.

To anyone who is thinking about doing the new YRE in Bel Air, Maryland,
be aware that the owner of the start point has decided to closeon Sundays. A
group of us went to do the walk today and discovered this fact. The point of
contact (Rodger
Coupe) was very accomodating, coming over to bring maps and start cards, and
promising to mail insert cards. He said that the club is working on having a
box
outside which would let you register when the restaurant is not open, but
until
then, it would be better to pick a different day of the week, just in case he
is not
available.
A brief review - We enjoyed the walk. It is about 4K of trail through the
town and
about 6K on the "MA & PA" trail. That is a natural surface trail, with some
distinct
ups and downs, but nothing I would call a "steep slope" as the little signs
there do.
It was pleasant today, but is likely very pretty in the spring and summer.
There was
also some mud (more reasons to wait a bit to do this). I think it is likely I
will do this
again in the second half of the year.

It is not often that one has the opportunity to experience and thoroughly enjoy
a wonderfully successful endeavor which combines the talents, technology,
natural powers, scenic beauty and evolution of humankind and Mother Nature. On
Saturday, Feb 10th, this is precisely what a very happy bunch of Volkssporters
was able to do when they participated in the 12th Annual Presidents' Day Walk
held at the Orlando Easterly Wetlands Park hosted by the Mid Florida Milers.

The traveling van was loaded early and departed from Port Orange for the hour's
drive south to the park. This remote wetlands is located a short distance from
the well-known but very small village of Christmas, site of a very busy Post
Office during December and the home of Fort Christmas of early pioneer days
fame. The crew was jovial and looking forward to a super walk filled with
"birding" and aesthetic wonders.

We arrived to a parking lot already filling up with fellow Volkssporters,
quickly registered, took the obligatory "pitstop," and were on our way. The
morning air was crisp and the bright Florida sun was beaming brightly, promising
a quick warm-up to the temperature. As we walked along the gravel road to the
first turn into the wetlands, we were able to read a quick summary of what
Orlando Easterly Wetlands Park is all about. Developed in the mid 1980's, the
wetland was designed to reuse highly treated reclaimed water for environmental
enhancement. Surveys indicated that the area was originally a wet prairie
dotted with hardwood swamps and hammocks. During the early 1900's, much of the
prairie was ditched and drained to provide land for agricultural development and
pasture lands for cattle. This fertile wet prairie dried up and a marvelous
nature habitat was lost.

Along came the City of Orlando, desperately in need for a solution of what to do
with the wastewater its burgeoning population produced. The skills of engineers
and the restorative powers of nature worked hand in hand to bring about the
success of this world renowned facility.

We were able to witness through this wonderful walk the results. And were it
not for the occasional pump house, lift station and the necessary gravel roads
winding through the area we would not have been able to recognize this for other
than a beautiful nature habitat. The walk led us along the levees dividing the
vast shallow ponds teeming with wildlife. Excitement rose as we began to see
many different birds of the area to include egrets, giant blue herons, Marabou
storks, anhinga, white ibis, moorhens, ospreys and more. There have been over
160 varieties of birds identified as inhabitants of the wetlands. We became
especially excited when we spotted a flock of four beautiful and rare white
pelicans floating sedately in one of the huge ponds. We here in Florida are
used to seeing the brown pelican which is very abundant.

Then we started spying the snouts and eyes of numerous alligators barely poking
above the water's surface, slowly swimming through the reeds and cattails
bordering the ponds. Fortunately we were more interested in them than they in
us. Of course, most of the thirty or so gators we saw were only between three
and four feet long and appeared well fed.

Our stroll eventually took us into parts of the hardwood copses surrounding the
wetlands area and atop the ancient hammocks which have been revitalized. The
shade was a welcome relief for many of us because the temps had risen to a quite
warm 80 degrees.

We arrived at the finish point with one of those "Wow! What a great experience
and what a great walk!" feelings flowing through our bodies. Thank you, Mid
Florida Milers for hosting us for this memorable day!

Until next time, I remain
Your Positive Reviewer,
Marvin Stokes

Gloria Merwarth told me today at our "meet the other RD candidate" walk in
Lake Buena Vista that she couldn't chat with me yesterday at the Wetlands
much, because there were so many of the original Mid-Florida Milers there
and she wanted to catch up. I was amazed at how much Robbie, grandson of
the Rausches, had grown since last I saw him as a tyke of 3. BTW, both of
our candidates for SE Region Director were on this group walk today, and it
was fun to have both of them to yak with while admiring the Disney scenery.

Larry Middleton said he thought perhaps he was the only Happy Wanderer who
was at the very first Wanderer event (when we were the Pierson Happy
Wanderers) in Emporia, but I can also make that claim. Oldies but goodies.
And Gloria said today that she and Mark were there, too, and if they were
Wanderers at the time, then they are also in the Oldy but Goody club.... :)

The BBQ plates, at $3 apiece, were wonderful. Let me echo Marvin in
thanking the Mid-Florida Milers for a special day.

Lucy

PS. My walking buddy and I saw a pair of bald eagles (John McMahan
concurred from my description that they really were balds), and one of them
carrying a large snake, which it dropped from about 100 feet. Cool!

Walking.about.com and Volks-Ware sponsor area-specific walking event
announcement lists for several states/areas.

These have been growing very well in the past couple of months,
especially. Get ready for spring walking by having a sign-up sheet for
your local group out at your walking events.

Target the new walkers - get them onto the email list so they are
reminded weekly that we have walking events coming up.

These are announcement-only lists - subscribers get only 1 (one) message
per week, unless there is an emergency announcement that needs to be
made. Only the moderator(s) can post messages to the list. The
moderator uses the AVA web listings and club websites and Walklist
postings for information on upcoming walks.

The areas/states and their lists:
WalkCalifornia - 201 subscribers
WalkMaryland - 90 subs.
WalkVirginia - 70 subs
WalkAtlantic (NY, NJ, PA, RI, DE) 95 subs
WalkSCentral (the great South Central Region): 98 subs
WalkWashington - 60 subs
WalkOregon - 682 subs

Sign-up Sheet:
All we do is put out a simple lined sheet with "Sign up to receive event
announcements by email) and a space for their email address and their
name.

Then email the addresses to lizmitchell@... or snail mail it to
her - her address is at http://www.volks-ware.com

Today I found a most unexpected orientation to our sport of Volkswalking. I was
reading J.A. Jance’s mystery DEVIL’S CLAW. On page 72 a volksmarch was
referenced along with several of it’s characteristics. Obviously Ms Jance is
familiar with our sport, if not a participant. I can’t think of a better way of
reaching a great number of people who might otherwise never know of our great
sport. Even if she is not a walker, maybe she’ll have the opportunity to join us
at one of the Bellevue Convention events in June.

Thanks to whomever, our events are finally detailed in the AVA listing. Check
out the Edison Parade of Lights walk on February 17th in Downtown Fort Myers,
FL and our Highlands Hammock State Park walk in Sebring, FL events. Both are
group walks of our YRE. Weather is perfect right now!

Isn't that a great book! I just loved it and went on to read the whole
series this winter. It was recommended to me last summer by none other than
one of our members, Hal W., of Mesa, AZ. The volksmarcher character in the
book was Hal. He is also the POC and club president for the Valley
Volkssporters Association in Arizona. He was so wonderful to me when I
called to get information about the events in Arizona last September and
again when the start point had moved without his knowledge. If any of you
are in his area, I know that he could use some help with the club and
events. He is doing almost all of the work himself and could really use some
assistance.
Hal is a very nice gentleman who helps give our sport the reputation that it
is famous for. :-)))

It was a beautiful weekend for walking in Washington! A little crisp, but
the sun was out on this side of the mts. anyway.
Saturday, the Northwest Striders offered two walks and a bike in Redmond,
WA. They started in Marymoor Park, and between the two walks, we got a
great stroll around the park areas. Both walks also traveled a bit along
the River walk in the area, and both went into downtown Redmond - past all
the nice, yuppie stores and all. They have REI and Eddie Bauer and Borders
and all those tempting places to visit. It was a great day to be out and
about, and the Striders put on a good event. Thanks!

On Sunday, Jack Maxcy and the Over the Hill Gang had a workers' walk of one
of the Dupont walks coming up at the end of March. Jack always comes up
with nice routes for this event. There will be two walks and a bike taking
in the Dupont area. Put this event on your calendar for March 24th! You'll
have a great time!
Happy Trails! Cheryl

I got Marcia's permission to forward the note below to the list, concerning
another opion about traffic in Seattle area....

We've decided to stay in Renton and will be availing ourselves of the HOV
lane... (HOV = High Occupancy Vehicle in Houston).

Hi Andy! I'm the Transportation Committee Chair Person, so they've routed
your inquiry to me.

You didn't say whether you would be driving or taking public transportation.

Rush hour traffic in the Puget Sound area is awful. If you're traveling
alone, expect to spend lots of time sitting still on the freeway. I cannot
recommend the Sea-Tac area at all, unless you're planning to use the hotel
airporter van. However, that would probably require going to the airport
first, then to Bellevue.

The best way to get around in rush hour is with another person. All the
areas you mentioned have carpool lanes leading to and from them. You need
only one other person in the car with you. (Except on the Evergreen Point
Floating Bridge (Hwy 520), which requires three.) From Lynnwood, you can
jump on Hwy 405 pretty easily, same from Renton, but Renton is much closer.

Personally, I would have to recommend Renton. Maybe I'm prejudiced because
I live there, but I also commute to Kirkland ( just a little beyond
Bellevue) during rush hour on a daily basis and I know what a timesaver the
carpool lane is. It's also a great place to catch an express bus from the
Park & Ride lot.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

There are 20 listed in the IVV International calendar- and they
are easier to find this year.
they also have loads of weekend walks, though if you're walking
(rather than running) start early!

The Gator Volksmarsch Club is sponsoring a group walk of its year round
event at Norfolk, VA, this Saturday, February 17, 2001, at 9 am. Even
though the start point, MacArthur Memorial Theater Building, does not
open until 10 am, there will be someone there with directions to get
everyone started. If you would like to walk with a group through the
downtown Norfolk area, as well as the Ghent section of town, plan on
meeting with this Saturday morning.

On February 24, 2001, the Peninsula Pathfinders are sponsoring a group
walk at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Meet at the Transportation Museum at 9
am for a group start. This walk is completely on the Army fort and
goes along the James River where you can see the Navy's fleet that is
in storage. The walk also qualifies for a National Heritage Event for
those who are working on a second time book. It does not count for
those who are working on their first National Heritage book. If you
would like to walk Fort Eustis with a group, plan on walking with us on
this event.
