RSS[My newspaper, the Birmingham Post-Herald, ended publication on
Sept. 23. It was a sad day for me, for my colleagues, and for my
hometown. I had a great run at the paper, and who knows what lies
around the bend for me.
I've got a few plans in my head. With a little luck, one of them
will turn out to be a winner. I've got some time to figure things out.
Every day's a work day, every day's a weekend.
As for this weekly diversion, I don't have a particular next step
yet. I'll keep the board active, but again who knows.
Below is our hastily written farewell to readers on the last day
of publication.
Thank you, faithful readers. It's been fun.

Thank you, dear
readers -- it was our privilege
By Wade Kwon
Birmingham Post-Herald
Reports of our demise have
been greatly exaggerated for years.
Until today.
It's a bittersweet time for us in the newsroom. But before we turn the lights out, it's only right that we go out on a high note.
It's been our privilege to
cover features for Birmingham and the surrounding community. We've had
a ball, and we've met some terribly interesting people along the way.
Books, arts, dance, music, film, food, home, garden, fashion,
television, events, festivals, personalities -- we covered them
all.
For me, it's been a nine-year ride. I've worked at quite a few local publications, but this has always been the pinnacle: working, writing and editing at my hometown paper.
In this department, I've been lucky to work with some great journalists, of which I'll name a few: Tabitha Lacy, Kathy Kemp, Janet Jimmerson, Robin Oliver, Eartha McGoldrick, Lynette Holman, Rebecca Taylor and Darin Powell. We're grateful to all who had a hand in our successes over the years.
The awards were nice, but what really mattered was getting it right for you, the readers. Thank you for reading the paper, guiding our coverage and keeping us honest.
On behalf of our little group, Leigh Anne Monitor, Katie Veach, Adam Wilson and myself, thank you.
We're done. But we tried to keep one thing in mind as we put together our sections, an unofficial motto in our department that summed up our mission and our mantra:
We celebrate life.
