In my circle of compadres we had another name for
it--Fireside Science-Fiction.

For us, this was broad
enough to include practically everything in the genre
(even things that were SF then that wouldn't be now,
such as a balloon journey across Africa) but narrow
enough to exclude westerns, WWI movies,
etc.

Fireside Science-Fiction works for me because its a nice
oxymoron: the term "Science Fiction" usually conjures up a
sort of cold, logical futurism (Star Trek, etc.) and
so adding the word "fireside" to it gets the idea
across in a fun, paradoxical way.

We even made a
short video documentary on the subject for a local film
festival a few years back. I played the host (I've sent a
couple of photos along) and we used it to introduce
movies like "The Time Machine," "20,000 Leagues Under
the Sea," and "Flight of the Lost Balloon." Lots of
fun.

Anyhow, I'm not suggesting a name change for our club or
anything...just throwing in a couple cents worth of input as we
try to mutually work out the parameters of our
enthusiasm!

Rule Britannia!
RB
Of course, after I wrote my previous post, I remebered ol' Mr. Edgar Ricve Burroughs... His pulpy classics like Tarzan, Carter, and "The Land that Time Forgot"...
