I'm shopping for jumper cables for my son to have on hand with our 87DL.
He's at college in NC and is planning on living down south after
graduation. What gauge would someone recommend? I have a set of 4 gauge
I carry in our XC living up in NJ.
Thanks
Phil
Quick way is to use the link to the US Volvo tech pub site that's in the "links"
section of the group.

Hi Barry (and anyone else this might help out),
On Volvo's website (At least the US version of it), there is a section for
Volvo owners. Once you register with your E-mail address and what type of volvo
you have, you have access online to their online owners' library, which includes
owner's manuals. It's not quite the same as having the actual book, but it will
probably do if you need specific information in a pinch. The website is:
http://www.volvocars.com/us/Pages/default.aspx . Click on Sales & Services,and
choose Volvo Owners Info from the drop down list.
If you need the actual book, try Ebay Motors, http://motors.ebay.com . It's
not a certainty that you'll find one, but it is probably the best shot at it
online.

Has anybody had the problem of the shifter solenoid not releasing? It starts and
runs but when it gets colder (we're in the midwest, U.S.)I can't get it out of
park. Thanks for your insights. Birger Henningsen
Easiest way is just to go with what's on the shelf at a local parts store. The
lighters/lighter sockets (it's sometimes cheaper to buy a whole lighter & just
use the socket) usually come with an attached wire, similarly, fuse holders
usually come with lengths of wire already attached. It'll probably be easier to
find a blade fuse holder, since those are currently popular. Pick up a box of
fuses; it's almost a certainty you won't find a holder for the pointy ended
fuses in the car. For the short length needed, #14 wire is adequate.

I generally listen for the clicking of the relay to see if the fuel pump relay
is working. No click, no good. Can also hear the whir of the pump if it's
good. Also, check the radio supression relay as it effects the injectors and
can mimic a bad fuel pump. Supression relay is black in engine compartment.Â
If you've not changed the fuel pump relay, removing the tray above the
fuse/relay tray is pretty easy. Pop the cover at the cigarette lighter, then
remove the screws...one's straight, one's angled. When removed, the tray
slides out and the relay is easily accessed.
If car won't start or dies, can also be the crank sensor pickup. I had that
this summer and was maddening.

I have a non functioning fuel pump on 87 745 turbo. Fuel pump runs when
wired direct. How do you determine whether the fuel pump relay is problem or the
controlling computer?
Thanks

Our 2001 XC 70 is having transmission issues. It has had them for awhile.
Changing the fluid has helped, but it just got worse driving it up to the ski
area last weekend. It got really hot and smelled bad, and made a big clunk.
We had it checked out by an independent transmission shop, and it sounds like it
needs to be rebuilt. They said it is probably a valve body issue as well as
something else major, so they don't recommend just doing the valve body. They
are quoting $3000-$3500. They have done other work on my other vehicle and I
trust them. They have been recommended by several mechanics. They say they have
done several Volvos as well.
Does anyone know of any other transmission shops in the Seattle area who have
experience with rebuilding Volvo transmissions?
Thanks,
Mike
If it plugs into the cigar lighter, it's fuse #1, an 8 amp fuse. You'd probably
do better to either fit it with alligator clips to directly hook it to the
battery or add a cigar lighter outlet under the hood. Just get the cheapest
cigar lighter from a parts store, mount it on the fender well, near the battery
with a hefty fuse (25 or so amps), wired directly to the battery's + terminal.

What I said was, "computers rarely fail"; not, "software rarely returns bogus

You can also go by the odds; the relays are common failure items, the computers
rarely fail.

I beleive the computer sends put the power to turn the relay on. Check to see
if you are getting power there when cranking. You can also just take the realy
out and test it by its self.

Yep, a standard H7 bulb will fit fine. You'll have about 3 choices/price
levels - standard, better and best. Not sure how much rural night
driving you do but the "brighter" ones may benefit you.

Hello all, quick question, I need to replace my low beam lamps which are
H7's. I Am seeing various pricing on H7's for different models of autos,
some cheaper than what is being charged for "Volvo" bulbs.
The question is, is a H7 a H7 a H7 regardless of which auto it is for?
That seems reasonable for me to think, just need confirmation.
TIA..

I am looking to improve the performance of my 2002 C70 HT 2.3 Turbo, anyone know
of what can be done. I have already installed the air intake and am aware there
is a chip (programing upgrade) but that seems to be very expensive. What about
increasing the turbo size or exhaust. Any ideas would be helpful. Bob
Hi,
I have a 1996 850T5A, I use Castrol organic (non-synthetic) 10W-30. Check your
owner's manual. If you don't have one, you can order one fropm Volvo or your
Volvo dealer.
