A national forum for volunteers to exchange information about state and local actions to draft former Vice President Al Gore to run for President in 2008. We believe that Al Gore is uniquely positioned historically, intellectually and otherwise to provide our nation with a new direction and renewed commitment to the principles on which it was founded.
Al has made it abundantly clear that it's up to the grass roots to show him that our support is real and that we will be with him for the duration of the campaign and his presidency. He did this perhaps no more dramatically than in his speech on The Assault on Reason in San Rafael, CA on May 23, when he quoted an African proverb:
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
We have to go far and quickly.
There was a very long pause. The thousands in the audience were silent. It seemed as if he was waiting for a reply.
This listserve is for people who are ready to reply "Run Al, we are with you" and to demonstrate this commitment with action.
Petitions, entreaties, and demonstrations are useful and important tactics, but we also need to show our support in the one way that he won't be able to ignore, prepare to win him delegates in the Democratic primaries and caucuses.
In other words, we need to draft him.
A draft is when a large number of citizens organize so effectively that they convince a reluctant candidate to enter an electoral contest.
The purpose of this listserve is to exchange the strategic ideas, tactical information, and inspiration that will help create the first successful presidential draft in over 60 years. (President Eisenhower was drafted in 1952.)
