Using Maps To Build Connections between Tutor/Mentor Programs, Volunteers and Donors
|
The Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC), a Chicago non profit organization, creates maps that show high poverty neighborhoods in Chicago, along with locations of poorly performing public schools. These are neighborhoods where volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs are needed. The maps are intended to help leaders, volunteers and donors make decisions that support the growth of comprehensive tutor/mentor programs in all high poverty areas of the city, rather than a few good programs in just a few well publicized locations. Maps will be updated weekly at http://mappingforjustice.blogspot.com
Instructions for removing yourself from this list are included at the bottom of this email. |

June 23. Boy Shot. Says "thanks" to Docs.
In this map we show where a Chicago boy was shot in a drive-by shooting on June 23 in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. While being treated at Stroger Hospital, he told doctors and nurses - much to the delight Chicago Tribune headline writers - that, "You guys have been so nice to me. When I die, I'm going to miss you." Doctors ultimately saved the boy and the story captured the imagination of the entire city.
Contact information for these and other tutoring and/or mentoring programs can be found by searching the Chicago Program Links, or Program Locator Zip Code Map, found at

Lawyers Lend A Hand to Youth ... you can do the same!
In this map we show locations of 31 different tutor/mentor programs who received 2007 grants from the SunTimes Marovitz Lawyers Lend A Hand to Youth Program. This shows the intent of the Lend A Hand to fund programs throughout the city. On July 30 the Lend A Hand Program will host its annual MY HERO Awards to recognize lawyers, judges and law firms for their involvement in tutor/mentor programs. I encourage you to visit the web site and learn more about this strategy. |
