Subject: Action needed by you !!! Please read !

I don't want to beg but this VERY IMPORTANT. This is the answer to all your hopes, dreams and wishes when it comes to McLaren Park.  I have attended many meetings that have to do with the upcoming bond that's going to be in your November ballot.  There's only so much a handful of regulars can say concerning our park and its needs.  Now its is up to you!

Here it is....   rpd.bondfeedback@...   !!!!!!

Please.....PLEASE !!!!   Send in your comments and say, in any words you feel are best, that McLaren has waited long enough.  It's time.  It's time to stop the neglect and time to give back to our park.  There are too many areas that have been without care or maintenance.  Our trails, our lost playgrounds, and our very, very sick McNab Lake.  There are thousands of trees that need attention, signs and streets that need repair, cross walks and sidewalks that are missing along Shelly Drive and Mansell streets.  We have a tennis court that needs resurfacing, baseball fields and soccer fields riddled with gopher holes, views and vantage point lost to unkempt trees and bushes.  There's only 3 gardeners working 317 acres !!!

We need action yesterday on all these things and more.  Trash cans and doggie bag dispensers.   Custodians to maintain our highly used playgrounds and a return of our lost park patrol that once kept us and our children safe.  This bond could be the big capitol injection McLaren Park has been waiting for but we are competing with many parks throughout the city.  If your don't write  and send in your comments, McLaren will get lost in the shuffle to other needy parks that are much smaller and can get funding from many other avenues.  Our park is too large to be piece mealed together with just a few grants here and there. We need this, and we need it really bad!

Please send a copy to your supervisors as well (D11 - John Avalos john.avalos@..., D10 - Malia Cohen malia.cohen@..., D9 - David Campos david.campos@...) as well as Rec and Park at the email above and let them know you are standing up and you want to be counted!!!

Chuck & Trilce Farrugia

PS - Please send a copy to me as well and I'll print them out to hand in to the park planers in person.  Remember, even if the entire bond (a proposed 185 million dollars) was all spent on McLaren Park, it wouldn't be enough money.  McLaren Park is that big and that far gone due to lack of maintenance.  If we don't get the majority of this bond money, we are getting screwed once again.  This will be the last bond measure for parks in many many elections to come, and you do remember how much McLaren received from the last bond measures that passed right?  $0 : ( Thank your previous supervisors and each other really, for not stepping up when there was a chance.  By not doing so you let McLaren Park fall to ruin while other parks reaped the benefits of YOUR TAX DOLLARS!

Please forward to your friends and neighbors!

I know many of you are  busy with kids, family issues and work. Believe me I know where you are coming from.  The SF Parks Alliance meeting with Rec and Park and the board of Supervisors is tomorrow.  As of now, I have printed out a few dozen personal notes from many of you, who did a nice job of hammering the point home.

I'll have you know we have some strong advocates, some who don't even live in our side of town, writing in our behalf!  Some are planning to attend Monday nights meeting with me.  No one has mentioned anything about going to the meeting from our neighborhood that I know of though.  Something the bond planners might take notice of.

Like I said for those who stand idle....there will be no one to blame if funding is insufficient for McLaren Park except ourselves.  This is the opportunity of a life time, by all means, standing at our door step.  All you have to do is take it.

Below is a sample letter.  Feel free to use it and just type your name and address at the bottom and be sure to replace (WHAT?) with something you feel should be repaired in McLaren Park.  Send your letters to the emails below.  Be sure to send me a copy as well, at helpmlpark@... !

Sincerely grateful to those who are on board already,

Please include a significant amount of funding for McLaren Park in the proposed 2012 Parks bond! McLaren Park has 318 acres and is second in size only to Golden Gate Park. In the City's analysis for the 2008 Parks Bond, McLaren Park's capital needs were estimated at $57 million! In the last 4 years of deferred maintenance and inflation, needs have only gotten greater.

McLaren Park is simply much too large for volunteers and small private grants to fix. Public funds are urgently needed for trail upgrades, pedestrian safety improvements (especially crosswalks on Shelly Drive and Mansell Streets), repairing algae-filled McNab Lake, resurfacing courts, replacing lost play areas, baseball and soccer field repairs, basics like trash cans, irrigation and major landscaping needs that RPD's 3 gardeners will never be able to meet on their own. The thing I really want fixed is (WHAT?).

As a neighborhood, we have been skipped over way too many times and the damage has been done because of it. Our park shows in it with every turn and with every view. I also am not a blind to the fleet of green trucks and the hundreds of workers, I pay with my meager income and high taxes, to maintain Golden Gate Park everyday.

Please don't pass our neighborhood by again! We need McLaren Park to be included in the bond at a significant level.

Thank you!

The main meeting with RPD and The Parks Alliance Group was last night and I made sure that the director of rec and park himself received a copy of all your letters.  I also gave a copy to the Director of Planning and Capital Programs, Dawn Kamalanathan.  Hopefully this helps show we are fully aware of how unfairly we have been treated.  Unfortunately, not one supervisor was there so we will have to continue to lobby their offices hard until May when they make their decisions. So for those of you who didn't yet write your letter to RPD and your supervisor please, please don't forget.  We have about 4 -6 more weeks of time where we must continue to lobby our supervisors and Rec and Park that we insist McLaren be given it's fair share to make up for the decades of neglect.  The good news I was told is McLaren Park is leading a good campaign, as of now.

The recreation and parks email address to send your letters to is,

The three supervisor districts that border McLaren Park are D9, D10, and D11.   Without all three supervisors working together we will fail in reaching the required amount to make a lasting impact on the park.  All three must be on the same page and completely aware that we do exist out here and we waited long enough (if you have been alive that long).  We want a returned investment for decades of property taxes with no return.  We want McLaren Park restored !!!

Please spread the word!!!  Send a copy of your letter most importantly, to your supervisor and to the three supervisors below.

D11 - John Avalos john.avalos@..., D10 - Malia Cohen malia.cohen@..., D9 - David Campos david.campos@...

To the Mclaren park Community,

I hate to keep rubbing the same topic in every ones face but we are half way into a very important parks bond rally for the November 2012 election and the letters of support for McLaren Park to be significantly represented in this measure are still in need.  Yes we are off to a great start, but in this lull we can't let our guard down while others continue to fight.

Thank you to the 75  plus neighbors and friends of McLaren Park who have already sent in their letters to Rec and Park and their supervisors. That is amazing and I thank you all so much but in the next month we should try to double this number at least.

How about if everyone who wrote a letter already tried to solicit one neighbor or a friend who lives in the city.  That would double our current letter count and keep the pressure on the powers to be.  These are the  people who will decide who gets 185 million dollars or more of your tax payer dollars!  Wouldn't you want to see that money go to our own neighborhood park?  The second largest park in the city which has been skipped over and ignored for what seems like eternity?

This is an opportunity of a lifetime.  A chance to finally put McLaren park on the destination map and see it restored to what it rightfully should be, a fun and safe neighborhood park not a place to dump your trash or dead bodies as so many seem to think.

The people to email or write are.... rec and park at this email

Hi, everyone

Daniel (5) goes to Alta Vista, as does Grove Cohen, a 6 year old from Hamilton Street. We love the school and are thrilled to have it be so close to home!

I would love to spread the word to families in the general area, so if you are someone who posts on Bayview, Vis Valley, Excelsior, etc listserves, please post! The school still has some openings for next year, mainly for girls (I guess there's a glut of boys right now in SF).

Thanks, Simon, for doing the article!

Hi Folks!

Today is our final opportunity to tell RPD and Supervisors Cohen & Avalos our requirement that McLaren Park gets sufficient funding in the 2012 Park Bond.

WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK OUT at the meeting.

Some things to consider:

The last park bond was in 2008
The 2010 SF City Controller Parks Report rated District 10 parks the LOWEST for the last 3 years

The report stated "The Southeast portion of the City continues to have the lowest scoring parks"

"For the third year in a row, the two lowest scoring districts, falling below 85 percent, are in the southeast section of the City – Districts 10 and 11. In Districts 10 and 11, 16 of the 34 parks received lower scores. Seven of the worst scoring parks (below 80%) are in District 10 and three are in District 11"

In the current 2012 bond design
1. Only $6.5m is planned for McLaren Park
2. $4m is planned for Park Forestry - identification and project development is undefined -- RPD plans to identify where these projects take place post-passage
3. $4m is planned for Trails Reconstruction- identification and project development is undefined -- RPD plans to identify where these projects take place post-passage

Some other district parks listed for bond funding are slated to receive double-digit millions in capital funds.

2012 PARKS BOND DISTRICTS 10 & 11 MEETING

District 10 Supervisor Cohen and District 11 Supervisor Avalos will be at our meeting this Saturday. We are particularly concerned about the years of no capital funding for McLaren Park and our local neighborhood parks.

When: Saturday, April 21st – 2:00pm to 3:30pm
Where: Louis Sutter
Playground Clubhouse – Yale St. & Wayland St. in McLaren Park

I am collecting clothes, shoes or coats for age 5 - 15 yo. kids in Nepal. Our long-time nanny would like to send some decent (but used is just fine) clothes to a school in need there in her town. Clothes can be for boys or girls, for warm or cool weather (weather varies between 35-85 degrees F throughout the year).

Please DO: contact me if you have clothes to donate and I'll let you know where to drop them off (in the Northern Excelsior), or we can work out a pick up time. Please email amiesf@....

Please DO NOT: donate stained or damaged clothes or shoes, as I/they don't have capacity to fix or clean them.

Please note: any items that we cannot manage to ship to the school I will donate to Goodwill.

Thanks so much for any donations you can provide,
Amie

Anyone who likes to hike outdoors and who had a baby, toddler, or kid is invited
to this impromptu hike on Sunday the 27th. :-) Free, easy, fun, and most
likely new walking terrain for people.

McLaren Park Hike from Wilde and Ervine

We'll meet at 10 o'clock at an entrance to John McLaren Park at Wilde Avenue and
Ervine Street, across from El Dorado Elementary School. Parking is easy and
there's a bus stop a block away.

We'll meander uphill on a wide paved trail to an awesome observation lookout.
There is one short staircase, otherwise this part is fine for strollers.

The rest of the walk is mostly on a flat, dirt trail that a big-wheeled stroller
could handle, about a mile max, parallel to Mansell Street. We'll walk in a
westerly direction to a grassy meadow and another great view. Up close are
native plant species such as live oak, coastal buckwheat, coyote brush, and
purple needlegrass. We can look for hawks, Anna's hummingbirds, and swallowtail
butterflies, identify edible invasive species like wild mustard and wild radish,
and find serpentine rock.

We'll picnic along the way (bring your own water and food, and maybe something
for kids to share), then retrace our route to Ervine and Wilde. We'll walk at a
toddler's pace, more or less.

Hope you can make it!

--- Background details ---
Jeff Bowling of the SF Disc Golf Club recently presented a proposal for a new
course in McLaren Park to the McLaren Park Collaborative, the District 11
Council, and the Excelsior District Improvement Association. Here are the
important points:

At the District 11 Council meeting, Bowling said that Rec and Park believes "The
Golden Gate Park disc golf course is overutilized,” and could be made better
if there were another course to help “spread the damage”.
Bowling said that on a busy weekend the Golden Gate course hosts hundreds of
players, adding that while progress has been made in dealing with various
erosion, soil compaction, and tree damage issues, the crowds at Golden Gate
cause considerable environmental damage.
During his presentations, Mr. Bowling stated that the SFDG Club is open to other
possibilities, adding that all they want is a place to play. Two options
discussed are sharing space with a regular golf course, or using
already-disturbed city land for a unique "artistic" disc golf course with large

Last Sunday a great group of people with young children hiked on a less-used
trail in McLaren Park, and everyone seemed to want more hikes. The kids set the
pace, the youngest being a couple weeks old and the oldest maybe four-years-old.
Is wasn't terribly rigorous as you can imagine, but it was great fun for the
kids and some good connections were made between parents.

The next group hike of this kind will be JUNE 17 from 10-12 (or 10-1) on BAYVIEW
HILL in San Francisco. You'll feel like you're in the countryside. We will meet
at the end of Key Avenue, and start walking on the fire road there at 10:15
(waiting with toddlers is like herding cats). It's uphill a quarter mile, then
there is a flat loop at the top with great views and picnic areas. This is
Father's Day, and perhaps a nice way for Dad to meet some other dads, exercise,
and have a good time. Big kids would LOVE Bayview Hill--there are WPA staircases
to run around on, trees to climb, and rocks to clamber over. Actually, big kids
would be totally into this hike.

Sorry if it seems like I'm making a plug for my blog, but the best way to join
up on these and more hikes will be to sign up on Hill Babies
(http://hillbabiessf.blogspot.com/).

I think there is a great desire among parents for this sort of thing, as about
30 parents showed last weekend. Because we were in a wide-open space, it
certainly wasn't too big of a group---if anything, it was inspiring and
exciting.

Best regards,
Jess

I want to apologize for using caps on my first post about disc golf, but I do
think we have started an important discussion about how our closest park is
used, or potentially used. Disc golf is also a valid discussion topic on the
Excelsior Parents' group as our local kids may or may not participate in this or
other activities in the park.

Each disc is ~quarter pound, smaller than a frisbee, and moves on average much
faster than a frisbee. Quest AT (makers of the Inferno disc) has stated: "The
average high speed launch is measuring about 50 mph with some launching up to 80
mph, the rpm at 50 mph is usually around 1000 rpm but we have seen it up to 2400
rpm."

It would not be fun to be hit by one of these. I'm not suggesting that disc golf
is analogous to Field Archery, where the missiles are truly lethal (but it is a
spectrum).

In terms of erosion and hard pack (where dirt is compacted until nothing grows
there), and damage to trees, there are many noted examples online. There are
before and after photos of disc golf in Golden Gate Park here:
http://www.savemclarenpark.org/SMP4_ggpark.html.

I want to disclose that I am a resident with a kid who loves to hike in McLaren
Park because we live a few blocks from the park.

To add to Jessica's comments, I oppose dedicating a single use to such a large swath of McLaren Park. Also, this park is no longer "under-used" as those of us who frequent it have noticed. And the value of McLaren as the wild counterpart to Golden Gate Park still holds - with the influx of housing coming to our neighborhood, including at Sunnydale, adjacent to the park, we need to preserve open space for walking and hiking. These are activities that far more of us engage in than disc golf.

Hello all,

Just weighing in with a few notes on this. I also live about a block from
McLaren park and have a 4 1/2 month old son. My first.

From what I understand, the disc golf group has bent over backwards to move
their proposed area from a busy area to an under-used area of the park.

I've also seen the Golden Gate Park course and the unique "sport" and free
activity that disc golf has given that area of Golden Gate Park. It's got a
good energy. Visiting relatives, I've also seen courses in other areas of the
U.S. that seem to be positive community additions in parks. Not sure why there
is so much negativity.

I'd be very happy to have disc golf available for my son as he grows up next to
McLaren Park.

Hi Folks,
Since the attached flyer about Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's Community Meeting was created by SFPD, I've asked our librarian, Alice Chan, to forward the it.
Please invite folks and bring your input and concerns about federal matters to our meeting at our new Visitacion Valley Library tomorrow from  from 4:00 - 6:30 PM. ( I was told that CAA will provide translation. )

Just a reminder and an invitation to anyone who'd like to walk at a toddler's
pace---easy, free, fun hike on Bayview Hill, a beautiful hill with views,
historic staircases, and rare native plants like Islais cherry. Bayview Hill is
fairly untrodden compared to other SF parks, and will be a first time treat for
many people. This hike in particular is geared for people with little kids, but
all ages and friendly people welcome.

Sunday, June 17th. Meet between 9:30-10:00 am at the end of Key Avenue, where
there is a gate and a fire road. Hike starts promptly at 10:15. About a mile and
a half roundtrip. Steep hill to begin with, but flat thereafter. Strollers are
fine---we'll be on a wide fire road the whole way. Picnic somewhere along the
way; please bring something to share with foraging kids. Back to Key Avenue by
12:30, I suspect.

Did I mention free? Did I mention fun? Yeah, check it out!

HIKE the VISITACION VALLEY GREENWAY
July 15, 2012

WHEN
Sunday July 15th, from 10-12. I'll be at Hans Schiller Plaza by 9:45 am, on
Leland Avenue (b/t Rutland and Alpha). We start walking at 10:15. (If you need
coffee and a bathroom before, Eat Drink and Play Caf is a few blocks down the
street)

THE HIKE
The Greenway starts flat and is full of blooming flowers this time of year.
(Talk about lovely!) Hummingbirds are frequent, as are crows and scrub jays. At
the Herb Garden, there's a staircase, but you can still manage with a stroller
(I have on numerous occasions, and am happy to help anyone carry things). The
rest is gently uphill, and toddlers will set the pace.

We'll wander through Hans Schiller Plaza, Community Garden, Herb Garden,
Children's Play Garden (with a break for swings, sliding, and snacking), the
Agriculture Garden, and the Native Plant Garden.

My hope is to picnic in the Children's Play Garden on the way back down, but
break anytime, and do try to make it to the Native Plant Garden for the view
(and the biggest amount of lupine I've ever seen). It's usually pretty sunny in
this neighborhood, but don't be discouraged if its overcastthe fog makes
incredible patterns coming over San Bruno Mountain and down Geneva Avenue, which
we can see.

Fran Martin and Jim Growden of the Greenway will be joining us to talk with
anyone about design, landscaping, and more. Possibly someone from Nature in the
City will also come along.

Optional: Anyone who wants a gung-ho five-star workout-style hike should go two
blocks over from the Native Plant Garden to McLaren Park (there's a trail
starting at the intersection of Wilde and Ervine Streets that'll give you four
or five more miles, at least, of new sights in a great setting).

GETTING THERE
Plenty of free parking since it's Sunday, and lots of public transportation
within a block or two (Cal Train, T Third Street, 8AX/8BX Bayshore Express, 9
San Bruno, 56 Rutland)

WHY DO THIS?
Much like my kid, I love friends, being outside, and meeting new people!

This hike is not sponsored by anyone or anything; I'm just a parent living in
the City who likes to walk and meet people. It's free and as relaxed and fun as
possible. I do write about hikes on a blog called Hill Babies, but hiking and
walking is not a business, it's a deep interest.

Hikes in 2012
1. MayMcLaren Park's southern slope
2. JuneBayview Hill
3. JulyVisitacion Valley Greenway
4. AugustRock City on Mount Diablo
5. September?

Possible Future Hikes

Mt. Diablo! Basically SF and close by. Everyone is welcome.

Hi Families,

I am starting Grad school in Hayward this Fall and am looking for a dog walker on Monday and Wednesday afternoons starting September 5. I have the child care covered but need to make sure the dog is okay too. We have a 1.5 year old Catahoula leopard dog who needs a good run. If anyone has any recommendations that would be greatly appreciated.

HIKE CANDLESTICK POINT STATE RECREATION AREA ON SUNDAY AUGUST 26TH

You are invited to come for a walk at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area
with friends, kids, and people newly met. I'm doing these monthly hikes just as
a way to move my body, meet interesting adults, and let my kid play with a big
old gang of kids the old fashioned way, outside. All ages welcome. Free and
unsponsored.

WHEN
Sunday August 26th, meeting at 9:30 AM. Why so early? Because 9:30 am on that
day is the peak of HIGH TIDE, and down by the water that means it's pretty
special--extra lovely and smells wonderful. :-)

WHERE TO MEET
Meet near the bathrooms at the main parking lot off of Hunters Point Expressway.
I'm sure you'll see the group. I'm going to make and Xerox maps for everyone,
pointing out some sights and where our picnic spot would be.

THE HIKE
The terrain is flat, and the trails are wide and smooth. If your kid rides a
bike or a trike, that would be great way to explore. I'll be on foot, going at
the speed of my three-year-old.

The hike is meant as a group thing, but with map in hand you are totally able to
go at your own pace. One can always rendezvous for the picnic.

WHAT TO BRING
Food and water
Sun protection
Layers of clothing
Fun and optional: kites, bikes, trikes, rollerblades, skateboards

GETTING THERE
Parking is free (exit at Candlestick Park off of 101 and head towards the water,
following signs towards Hunters Point Expressway). For public transport, see:
http://tripplanner.transit.511.org

Cheers,
Jessica

P.S.
OPTIONAL GUNG-HO HIKE
Anyone who wants a five-star hike could explore nearby Yosemite Slough, a tidal
channel that has been polluted, but is now receiving a $14 million dollar
restoration. The Slough is a fantastic place for bird watching come fall, and
home to the endangered clapper rail.
