In yesterday's Burlington Free Press long time environmental leader Anne Petermann had the courage to write a column to say that we need to change the system and not just do some magical thinking type things like carbon offsets which only promote business as usual.  For stating this she is receiving criticism on the postings.

This Wednesday at UVM five student groups will be presenting their semester end power point presentations on applying whole systems thinking to different environmental issues.  One is on a steady state economy (www.steadystate.org to learn and endorse) which relates directly to what Anne is saying.  Another is on toxics.  A really important one is on bringing social and environmental causes together which would help both movements achieve their missions.  We are all in this together after all. See the details below.  I have worked with the students and they are really a very devoted and capable group of young folks.

We will be carpooling from the Montpelier park and ride for departure at 4 if anyone would like to go from there.

Greetings colleagues

Please try to attend the following event and also send the details via email to your networks about the screening and conversation with the filmmakers of an important documentary on the environmental impact of war at UVM's Fleming Museum on Monday, November 30, evening.

This film is done with great care and respect for those affected by war as well as the soldiers who are serving their nation. It has received endorsements from environmentalists and military officials alike. Hope you can attend and spread the word -- apologies for the short notice.

Greetings friends on the Vermont Environment Network

I would like to share with you the news of the publication  of my new book with Yale University Press titled "Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future."

This book grapples with quite a range of issues related to natural resources, earth science and sustainability for a general nonfiction audience.

Some advance endorsements of the book, including from Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and IPCC Chair R.K. Pachauri can be found at:

http://yalepress.yale.edu/YupBooks//reviews.asp?isbn=9780300141610

As a Yale trade publication it is also very reasonably priced and can be used as a text for courses on sustainability or for general "pleasure reading." I have also tried to provide some literary quality to the narrative which will hopefully be appealing to many of you as well.

I would appreciate if you can spread the word about the book to others who may be interested in this topic.

My aim is for this book to positively transform the narrative on resource scarcity, particularly around nonrenewable resources from conflict to cooperation among impacted communities, industry and government.

I will be giving a few talks around Vermont in coming months about the book as well.

Warm regards
Saleem
