One use of frankincense at the time, according to a sermon I read yesterday
from a minister friend of mine, was in preparing bodies for burial.
(Apparently the Magis' gifts of frankincense and myrrh (both used in
embalming) has more symbolism to it than most of us are aware.)
Don't know if this applies to the passage at hand, and no doubt there were
other uses for frankincense, as suggested by the last respondent.
