Is a Vegetarian
Diet Really Nutritious?
The next VSS Library talk takes place at Bukit Merah Library on Sat, 10
Sep, 2–3.30pm. We have a very popular speaker, Dr Priyadarshani
Kamat, who has done many talks on the benefits of veg diets. Dr Priya's NLB
talk is free and open to the public. We would like to thank NLB for
allowing us to hold talks at their libraries. Here are details.
Fruit smoothies have
been around for a while, but what are also becoming popular are green
smoothies, smoothies which also include veggies. To teach us how to make
our own green smoothies, VSS has invited Adeline Tan, the entrepreneur
behind LINS Smoodees. Adeline will be sharing
some of her smoothie secrets on Sun, 28 Aug, from 11am–12.30pm, at
the BayshorePark condo's function room. Cost is
$15 for VSS members and $20 for non–members. Details at http://www.vegetarian–society.org/node/1579.

Many Volunteer
Opportunities
VSS has many ways to
bring our message out to the public, including a variety of informative,
persuasive flyers and eye catching posters. Sometimes, we are invited to
take part in public exhibitions and other events, where we can distribute
our flyers and display our posters. Volunteers are needed
to staff the VSS presence at these events. You don't need to be an expert
to talk to the public. It's fine to say, "That's a very important
question. Sorry, I'm not sure of the answer. Let me get back to you, please". If you might have some
time to volunteer for such public outreach, please contact VSS at info@.... You can make a difference in
someone else's life! If you're not there, they might not have anyone to
introduce them to meat reduction. Top
Concert for the

is to gather as many people as possible together to show Resorts World just
how many of us want them to make the ethical decision to let the dolphins
go. The more of us together, the bigger the voice and the stronger the

VSS Student
Members Meet Up!
The following report was contributed by VSS
intern Natalie Teo, who is an NTU student. The VSS student membership
scheme offers free membership to full time students below 24 years of age: http://www.vegetarian–society.org/student Good food, a great host
and a chance to make new friends – the setting was complete on the
evening of 22 Jul when VSS held our first ever meet up for students. Coming
from all walks of life, we students enjoyed the burgers from vegan joint
Veganburg as we chatted and shared experiences about their vegetarian
journey. We were later joined by
Veganburg owner Alex Tan, who very kindly gave us discount coupons and
shared a little more about his work with Veganburg and other social causes. I think the highlight
of the evening was when we started to share more about why we turned
vegetarian and the hurdles we face continuing on a veg path. Some of us
were led to be veg by family reasons or religion, while most of us opted to
go vegetarian for ethical reasons. Listening to every
single one of my fellow students trade stories about gory images and
footage of animal cruelty made me feel that yes, I was not alone. What
surprised me, though, was that very few of us actually opted to be
vegetarian for health reasons. I guess it seems that it's not just the
average meat–eater who takes their youth for granted. We vegetarians
are not very much different either! Among us also were meat
reducers whom we warmly welcomed. These were students who, for a variety of
reasons, such as family objections, could not go completely vegetarian but
were working on it. Their stance was similar – that meat consumption
was ultimately bad for the environment and for animal welfare. And then we moved on to
the predictably Singaporean pastime – Complaining. The general
consensus among us all was that our meat eating friends thought we were
crazy. We also talked about the difficulties in getting our family,
especially the older generation, to understand that we would not be
malnourished if we did not consume animal foods. We then adjourned to
the conference room to watch some educational videos on going vegetarian.
Knowing that there was so much more to being vegetarian than just the
variety of issues already explored in the media, really opened my eyes up
to this lifestyle that I've chosen to adopt. So we all left after,
promising to add each other on Facebook (see I told you we were no
different from normal young people!) and keep in touch. Until next time, my
newfound friends! Top
This email was sent to VSS by Dave Goh, a student
at SingaporeManagementUniversity. Thought I would like to
share with you something – a few days ago I had this dream…
very vivid… I was in a slaughterhouse with a friend who, along with
many other people, was there to buy meat. Dead carcasses filled the place.
In the midst of all that death, I saw a small, young animal, chained and
still alive. As I was getting ready to leave, the young animal suddenly
appeared, ran towards me and repeatedly nudged my left knee. It nudged my
knee, at the same time shivering profusely, for more than 5 minutes. I
stood there dumbfounded. Nothing can really
describe what I felt. It was an immense sadness. One so chilling that I
will not forget. When I awoke, tears were in my eyes, and just thinking
about the scene brought more tears. What struck me with sadness was that it
chose me amongst all the people there (running straight at me) and its
incessant shiver. In the dream, I vowed to save the animal, no matter how
much it cost to buy its freedom. Top

Talk on the
Pangolin Trade
Pangolins, also known
as spiny anteaters, have been hunted and consumed throughout Asia historically. In recent decades, however, there
has been a shift from local utilisation to large scale commercial
harvesting which is attributed to demand from East and Southeast Asian
countries where pangolin meat is consumed and their scales used in
traditional medicines. Despite national and international protection an
illicit trade in Asian pangolins continues to persist and it is this that
is threatening the very existence of the species. This talk comprises an
introduction to the trade in Asian pangolins followed by a report of recent
efforts to understand the dynamics of trade, in particular in Peninsular
Malaysia, so that efforts to mitigate such activity can be informed and
improved. Venue: The Function Hall, Singapore Botanic Gardens Date: Mon, 29 Aug Time: 4 to 5pm Admission: free Contact: http://www.nss.org.sg, contact@..., 6741.2036 Top

Myth Busting
One of the free
brochures that VSS distributes is "Meat Less in Singapore".
Along with recipes, this brochure also contains information to refute myths
about vegetarian diets. Recently, some of this material was reprinted, with
permission, on a website called Ageless Online: http://www.agelessonline.net/health/
going-meat-less Here's an excerpt. I Need Meat To Get Enough Iron Answer: Iron is an
essential nutrient that enables our blood to perform its transport
functions. Iron also maintains our immune system. Fortunately, many
plant-based foods are rich in iron including chickpeas, raisins, spinach,
molasses, brown sugar, whole grain bread and oatmeal. Top
Letters to the ST
Forum Page
Recently, ST columnist
Dr Andy Ho has had two articles of particular interest to VSS: one
about plant based diets and one about the dolphins whom Resorts World wants
to forcibly bring to SG. In response, a VSS Exco member wrote a letter that
ST published online: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/
OnlineStory/STIStory_705881.html Our new intern, an NUS
student, also wrote in, but that letter has yet
to be published. Here it is: Release the Dolphins I refer to Dr. Andy
Ho's article entitled "Of animals, rights and moral agency" (18
Aug), where he argued 25 dolphins that once roamed freely in the Pacific
Ocean should be kept in lifetime captivity for entertainment purposes at
Resorts World Sentosa ("RWS"). As an animal lover, I am glad he
agrees it is important to promote animal welfare. He has rightly stated
"we are not free to abuse animals... we are moral agents, for whom
human morality dictates that we be humane towards animals". However, he was
mistaken that "it is hard to see how enclosing the RWS dolphins in a
pen and training them under the eyes of a team led by five vets would
inflict pain or destroy them, if they are handled so they suffer no
physical pain or bodily discomfort". Scientific evidence abounds as to
the suffering that capture and captivity subject dolphins to. Capturing dolphins is
cruel because it rips them away from their natural ocean environments where
they with their family and pod mates. Statistics show 53% of dolphins that
survive capture will die within the first 3 months due to stress, panic and
trauma. Furthermore, dolphins
are used to constantly travelling, playing, fighting, searching for food,
and exploring the depths of the ocean. In captivity, their natural feeding
and foraging patterns are lost and behaviours associated with mating,
dominance, and maternal care are severely altered. Readers may easily find
more evidence online. Since humans should treat other species in a humane
manner, we should release these 25 dolphins into the wild. The writer also
stated "However unpalatable activists may find it to be, animals are
often sacrificed to meet human ends. The entire livestock and meat industry
is premised on that, as is the practice of testing drugs on animals."
However, just because animals are already sacrificed to meet human ends
does not justify us perpetuating such practices. But the appalling
conditions of factory farming merits another discussion. Finally, he suggested
"using animals in the laboratories is morally acceptable because the
practice eventually leads to cures for or prevention of deadly illnesses in
millions of human beings". Again, this is irrelevant. Even if the
practice may eventually lead to medical breakthroughs, saving millions of
lives is hardly comparable to profiting from entertaining RWS visitors.
Does the latter really necessitate subjecting wild dolphins to a lifetime
of pain and suffering? Top

– Resorts World
Resorts World seems to be helping the SG economy.
However, vegetarians are not completely happy with them for two reasons:
their plan for a captive dolphin programme, and their food, as can be seen
in the following letter which was Cc-ed to VSS. Dear Sir/Mdm. I had unpleasant
experience when visiting Universal Studio recently with my overseas
friends. My friends were all
PURE vegetarian; one of my friends tried to bring vegetarian food inside
but was stop at the entrance. We were told that vegetarian food is
available inside. However, we were all
very disappointed as we search around the whole place and could only find
one Chinese/Asia vegetarian food stall selling only one single menu
(noodle) and no any other option available. Some of my friends choose not
to eat as noodle is not suitable for them. I was really felt
shameful! not to me but to Universal Studio! Such a big well-known resort
world cannot even provide a simple good impression for tourist. And if you
are going to stop people from bring food in at least offer people something
good inside. Nowadays vegetarian is very common and a lots of people are
vegetarian, even in a five star hotel is serving this variety I don't see
why your management cannot make some good effort and attention on this
matter. At least provide more than one dish with more presentable food for
customer. And it was very expensive for a simple noodle like that. Or allow
vegetarian to bring in their own food. I believe my friend
will go back to their country to spread or share the story to other many
vegetarian friends out there that Singapore Famous Resort world treat
discrepancy for vegetarian. I hope the management
can do something about it. Resorts World replied as follows. Greetings from Resorts
World Sentosa. Please accept our
sincere apologies for the inconveniences caused. Kindly be informed that
we have already escalated your feedback to the relevant business unit in
charge who will be in direct contact with you once they have the confirmed
information. Should you need any
further assistance please feel free to contact us at anytime. Thank you and have a
pleasant day. VSS wrote both to the vegetarian and to Resorts
World. Here's what we sent to our vegetarian friend. Thank you for being a "noisy
vegetarian". Too often, we vegetarians are quiet and we do not want to
cause trouble. However, meat eating creates a great deal of trouble for
human health, for the environment and for the animals who are eaten. Thus,
we need to raise our voices, politely but persistently, so that more
vegetarian alternatives are available. Top

the following query: Would appreciate your
thoughts on this article please: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/
climatechange/7219223/Becoming-vegetarian-
can-harm-the-environment.html A VSS Exco member sent
this reply: Many factors affect the
climate change impact of a particular food eaten in a particular place:
transport is one of those, as is the production process. So, if I raise
chickens in my home using table scraps, it will probably be more climate
friendly than eating veggies flown in from Chile. Yes, it is possible for
an animal based meal eaten in a particular place, consisting of particular
foods, grown in a particular way, with a particular form of inputs,
transported in a particular way over a particular distance to be more eco
friendly than a particular plant based meal. But that tells us little or
nothing about general statements about what foods to advocate from a green
perspective. When I personally
decide what to eat, I take a holistic view, including env, health and
kindness. I'm sure that with enough creativity, someone could even concoct
a scenario in which it is kinder to eat meat. Top

Interview with
Vinitha of NutriHub
Vinitha Ang is a
registered nurse who runs NutriHub organic cafe – http://nutrihub.blogspot.com
– now at 46 Temple St,
in Chinatown. The cafe is closed on
Sunday, but available for group booking or hosting events / classes.
Opening hours are Mon to Sat 11am to 8pm (available for dinner after 8pm
based on reservation). Vinitha also offers a range of cooking classes.
Recently, Vinitha was interviewed for the VSS e-newsletter by Ana Laura
Rivarola Oneto. Here is Vinitha's story in her own words. Having nursed my
parents through their battle with serious illnesses and sufferings, I
realised that we have to take good care of our diet, especially those of us
with high risk family history. Since 2004, I have totally changed my diet
to vegetarian and progressively to a more wholesome organic vegan diet. Working at the National
Cancer Centre for 7 years, I saw young and old patients suffering from both
cancer and its treatment's side effects. Sad to say, there is no emphasis
on a healthy vegan diet as part of the cancer management. As a health care
provider, I've also seen people suffering from diseases that might be
easily cured with a change of diet. This is why I have been giving
consultation and dietary advice since 2007, when I started my Organic
Retail & Cafe business to promote a healthy lifestyle. Although I've made losses
in my business, I have strived on, as I gain the happiness and satisfaction
which I did not get it in my career in hospital, especially after seeing my
customers and students improving their health status and recovering from
their illness. I create lots of innovative dishes in order to attract
non-vegetarians to like our vegan, healthy – no MSG, no mock –
foods. If someone is
considering becoming a vegetarian and asks for my advice, I would say not
to rush – do it one step at a time. Change progressively by
increasing intake of fruits & vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts
& seeds, then reduce intake of meats, poultry and dairy products. I
also guide those who want to convert to vegan or raw food diet, as I walked
the path myself and understand all the difficulties and concerns about diet
deficiencies. Raw foods not only
contain the essential nutrients we need, but they are also more alkaline
and boost our body energy with lots of enzymes. That's why it is very
important to include more raw fresh fruits & vegetables in the daily
diet as our body falls sick or our recovery is slow due to the acidic
environment. To teach about this, I created the "Raw like cooked"
raw food class where my students enjoy the raw food as if it was cooked. Please remember:

10 Ways to
Convince Kids to Like Veggies
Not everyone likes vegetables.
Even some vegetarians don't like them, but maybe that's because we don't
know how to prepare them, and sometimes the best preparation can be almost
no preparation at all: just eating the veggies raw or lightly steamed. Kids are sometimes the toughest
audience for vegetables. Here are some tried and true (sometimes) ways to
change that: http://tinyurl.com/3r5vhvb Here's one of the tips:
Get them while they're hungry
– If they're hungry, they'll eat. Before dinner, serve an appetizer
of colorful vegetables, such as carrots, cucumbers, and red capsicum. Top
Another Shark Fin
Ban
Yet another place, the US state of Oregon,
located on the Pacific Ocean, has made it
illegal to sell, trade or possess shark fins. Indeed, more people are
becoming aware of the cruelty and ecological damage associated with this
prestige dish, which is still far too common at special occasions in SG.
Fortunately, there are veg versions of shark fin soup. More fundamentally,
let's make it so that people who really want to impress their friends and
family do it by serving delicious plant based foods. http://www.care2.com/causes/oregon-

Excellent Source

We received this from one of the world's top veg

Agriculture, Humane Society of the United States | Humane Society
International | Humane Society Institute of Science and Policy, DrGreger.org,
NutritionFacts.org,
twitter.com/nutrition_factsfacebook.com/NutritionFacts.org I thought you might
want to alert your members about a new resource, NutritionFacts.org, a
labor of love featuring all the videos from all my past Latest in Clinical
Nutrition DVDs split into hundreds of bite-sized topical segments that can
be searched and shared. Everything's free. It's strictly noncommercial (no
ads, not selling anything), strictly science-based (I even have links to
all the primary source citations). And the best part is that starting today
I'm going to upload a brand new video every day, seven days a week, for at
least the first 365 days. In addition to checking
out the site and sharing it with their friends, folks can also subscribe to
the daily video feed (http://nutritionfacts.org/videos/feed/)
or follow it on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/NutritionFacts.org)
and twitter (http://twitter.com/nutrition_facts). My dream is for this to
grow into an authoritative source on the latest in plant-based nutrition
and would very much appreciate anything you can do to promote it to your
lists. – Michael Top

Laughing at
Ourselves
This humorous poster
was used by our friends at ONE Singapore – http://www.onesingapore.org –
in an article about how our diets can be a potent part of action to address
poverty:
http://www.onesingapore.org/
news/cows-climate-change-and-compassion Here's an excerpt: 1.2 billion people are
malnourished and go to bed hungry every night. Roughly the same number of
people in rich countries suffer from diseases related to obesity. In his
book, "The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and
Our World," John Robbins presents some statistics that further
illustrate this global imbalance: US corn eaten by
people: 2 percent; US corn eaten by livestock: 77 percent * US farmland
producing vegetables: 4 million acres * US farmland
producing hay for livestock: 56 million acres * US grain and
cereals fed to livestock: 70 percent * Human beings who
could live off the grain and soybeans eaten by US livestock: 1,400,000,000 Global statistics
parallel this US data. Livestock now inhabit 33 percent of the world's
arable land and are competing for space with impoverished rural communities
that are robbed of their ancestral lands by agribusinesses. Top

Photography at
30,000 Feet A reader Cc-ed us on a misunderstanding with a
local SG airline. Apparently, the flight attendant thought that there were
no more veg meals, and they attempted to ad lib. To show its apologies over
the misunderstanding, the airline is offering the reader a voucher for
future in flight purchases. Here is part of what the reader wrote to the
airline: Can you explain why
there was only 1 vegetable in the meal when there were supposed to be two
(the other being dal or veg gravy)? Why was there no sticker AVML on the
meal? Why the foil on the meal looked a little open at the edges? Why the
rice smelt distinctly of a meat dish (as though meat gravy had been scooped
out but not entirely)? The next time this
happens I will be smart enough to photograph it and keep the meal with me
so that I can take it to CASE / courts and pursue this further. I will also
tell all my friends in the Vegetarian Society to do the same. It is better
to do that than give up the "proof" and argue unnecessarily with
you. Top

Two Moving Videos
on Plant Based Health
Here are two short
videos – each less than 5 minutes before the credits – on the
benefits of plant based diets. The first is by a physician, Dr Michael
Klaper, on why diet is more important that pills and procedures and why
plant based diets are also important for ethical and environmental reasons.
http://www.vegsource.com/news/2011/09/dr-
klaper----plant-only-medicine-man-video.html The second video is
testimony from someone who had suffered for years from diabetes and high
blood pressure. Standing next to her is Rip Esselstyn, the son of Caldwell
and Ann Esselstyn who spoke in SG earlier this year. 'Wholefoods',
mentioned in the video, is a U.S. chain of supermarkets that
emphasises healthier foods, although they also sell animal based foods. http://www.vegsource.com/news/2011/09/jacquie-

How Close Are We
to Test Tube Meat?
The VSS eNewsletter has
previously reported research into producing test tube meat. According to
one article – http://www.scrippsnews.com/node/64439
– science fiction may become reality within a year:
"[S]cientists in the U.S.
and Europe are competing furiously to
bring lab meat to market. Many predict it will be ready to sell in
supermarkets and restaurants within six months to a year and vendors are
lining up to buy it". Is this good news?
Maybe. The same article quotes the New Yorker magazine as stating that,
"The global livestock industry is responsible for nearly 20 percent of
humanity's greenhouse-gas emissions. Cattle consume nearly 10 percent of
the world's freshwater resources, and 80 percent of all farmland is devoted
to the production of meat. The consequences of eating meat, and our
increasing reliance on factory farms, are almost as disturbing for human
health". Top

Organizational
Behaviour Study by NUS on VSS
A group of students
from NUS sought out the VSS to study its organizational structure and
operations a few months ago. The study was recently concluded and several
recommendations were made to the VSS to improve its efficiency. We are
grateful to the students for their efforts and considered assistance and

The VSS team will slowly incorporate these recommendations which are
targeted at better management of volunteers, higher level of delegation of
work and decentralization of workload among collaborators. The summary of
the study is available for inspection and a copy can be obtained by

Jeff McMahan on
Vegetarianism
Human beings don't need to eat meat. But should we? Philosopher Jeff
McMahan thinks that it is obvious that we shouldn't. In this episode of the
Philosophy Bites podcast he discusses his views with another popular
philosopher, Nigel Warburton.
"I would like to share a
most heart warming experience I had today at the Loving Hut in Jeju Jungmun
Resort area. I'm currently having a holiday with my husband in Korea. Trust
me, it is extremely hard finding vegetarian food in Korea, not being able
to speak the language makes it worse. You can therefore imagine the
excitement we had when we bumped into Loving Hut in Jeju, the first
vegetarian restaurant we found in Korea.
This place is simply fantastic, very nice setting and quiet. We were
greeted by a well mannered male staff. After our order was taken, the lady
boss Ms Min Suniya came to chat with us, sharing that she and her staff
were all vegetarian. She also taught us how to say onion and garlic in
Korean.
We had a sumptuous and very delicious meal, the best we had in Korea. Ms
Min was very thankful when we told her how much we enjoyed the food. She
sent us to the door, it was drizzling but we told Ms Min we were fine.
The rain got heavier, and shortly after, Ms Min appeared in front of us
with an umbrella. She had actually driven to pass us the umbrella, saying
she and her staff were worried for us. My husband and I were so touched by
her kindness.
We thought the only way to repay her kindness is to help promote the loving
hut in Jeju Jungmun, we implore all who travel to Jeju to visit Ms Min's
wonderful vegetarian restaurant."

Awareness of
Cruelty in Factory Farming Gains Momentum
In the summer of 2009,
a modest ad campaign ran on the Toronto subway system that asked the
question "Why love one but eat the other?" with three different
ads featuring an inquisitive puppy facing a cheerful piglet, a fluffy
kitten and an equally fluffy baby chick side-by-side, and an alert Labrador
Retriever beside a curious cow. The poster-sized ads in this series drew
attention to the similarities between the animals we call
"family" and the animals we call "dinner", and then
exposed the shocking cruelty that the pig, chicken, and cow face on today's
factory farms. Its call to action was for people to choose a vegetarian
diet. Although limited in
size, this campaign picked up huge buzz and became a hot topic around water
coolers, at barbeques, in movie theatres, and all over the media. There were
constant reports of people (including whole families) becoming vegetarian
and vegan because of the ads, while groups from Hong Kong to St. Catharines
to Slovenia asked to run their own versions of the Toronto-originated
campaign. With the help and passion
of a whole community of people concerned about the treatment of animals
raised for food, the size of the original campaign has been quadrupled.
There are now ONE THOUSAND of these ads running in the Toronto subway
system in October and November of 2011. Read the full story at http://www.beveg.ca/about-the-campaign.php Top

Be The Change
Exposition offers a platform for children to witness, interact and share
their 'success stories' in bringing positive change in their community.
Last year's event encouraged an open environment for teachers, parents and
members of the public to witness the children's passion and to hear about
their journey of change. This year, get inspired
by the wonderful change-journey of 80 school teams who participated in the
Design for Change School Challenge 2011. Vandalism in school, saying 'no'
to shark's fin soup, teen depression, dealing with PSLE pressure, awareness
on myopia, cheering up the elderly, and, energy consumption were just a few
of the issues that bothered our young change-makers, and these
enterprising, creative minds designed just the solution for a better
future. Come with the family
for a fun-filled Saturday morning of learning and discovery, and be

concrete action! Don't miss out on this

Veg Tip for Travel to Korea In the 1 November issue, we shared the story of
someone who experienced outstanding service at a Loving Hut outlet in Korea. A
reader, Jenn, wrote in to share a tip that has helped her in her own
travels in Korea: I saw in the newsletter
that you mentioned about Loving Hut in Korea. I would like to share my
experience as I was in Korea
in August. Getting veg food is indeed a challenge in Korea,
moreover we can't speak their language and many of them are not well-versed
in English and don't understand the word 'vegetarian'. What I did was to get
the staff at the airport helpdesk to write the translation down on paper
for me - e.g. "I'm a vegetarian", "I do not eat meat
(because I love animals, or whatever reasons that you want to educate them
about, but not too long), please let me know if you have any non-meat
options available for me, thank you". For me, I can't take
spicy stuff so I have an additional line on the slip that requests for my
food to be non-spicy. Everything becomes easy-peasy then! If you forget to
do this at the airport, you can always get help from hotel concierge upon
check-in as well. Most people in Korea are
very happy to help and I think some of my meals might have been customised
for me. In addition, readers might be pleased to note
that there are over 40 Loving Hut outlets in South Korea, and the full list
is available via the following link: http://lovinghut.kr/kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table

Every year on 25 Nov,
millions all over the world pledge to observe the day as "MEATLESS
DAY" during which they abstain from consuming all forms of meat, fish
and fowl. Last year over 15.9 million people participated worldwide. The campaign was
conceived in India
in 1986 by the Sadhu Vaswani Mission - a social service organisation
dedicated to serving mankind, especially the poor and downtrodden. The
mission has declared 25th November as an international meatless day in
memory of its founder, Sadhu T L Vaswani - philosopher, spiritual leader
and educationist who practiced and preached the message of non-violence for
all beings. To be a part of the
initiative, please send the following pledge together with your name and
location to meatlessday@...:
"I
wholeheartedly support the idea that animals, who have befriended man
through the ages, must be given their rights. I further pledge
to observe November 25 as Meatless Day and abstain from all food of
violence (flesh, fish fowl etc.)." In addition, please
choose one, two or all of the options; A : I pledge to go meatless on 25 Nov
2011 B : I pledge to go meatless on 25 Nov
every year C : I am already a vegetarian and
pledge to do an act of service to animals on 25 Nov 2011 Top

Heart Health at
Next VSS Library Talk
VSS is proud to announce that Dr V P Nair is doing our next library talk.
Dr Nair is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at MountElizabethHospital. He has
published many scientific papers and has addressed many regional and
international cardiology conventions, and gives regular lectures to doctors
and nurses in Singapore
and many other Asian countries.
Dr Nair's talk will be titled 'Healthy Heart: Benefits of Vegetarian Diet'.
Among the questions, Dr Nair will be addressing are:
• What are the nutritional requirements of which
vegetarians should take note?
• Why are antioxidants important elements of a vegetarian
diet?
• How can we meet all our nutritional requirements?
You have probably seen
her story all over the new, the story of a local hawker's triumph over a
casino and her generosity in donating much of her winnings to charity, including
$2K to VSS. This heroine is Ms Choo Hong Eng, 58, the boss of Kwan Inn
Vegetarian outlet located in Geylang, who is best known for her laksa. [Ms
Choo is pictured here with VSS member Ngo Kau Wee.] Ms Choo has been a
vegetarian since three years old, following the diet of her adoptive
parents. About 26 years ago, she started her business in veg food, as a
self-taught chef. Since then, she has developed her own versions of popular
local food fares such as laksa, nasi lemak and "chicken" rice.
She graciously shared that one of the special ingredients in her famous
laksa is seaweed, which gives it that "sea flavour" without using
dead animals. If you'd also like to
donate to VSS, details are at http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss
(scroll down to near the bottom of the page). Donating to VSS doesn't
guarantee that you will be lucky at the gambling table or that you will
strike lottery, but it does guarantee that you'll be helping to educate the
public about the many benefits of moving towards a plant based diet. Top

VSS Inbox
1. Occasionally, VSS
receives email asking where to locate certain hard to find ingredients.
Sometimes, it takes asking lots of people to find the solution, and one way
to get help from lots of people is to send your question to the VSS Forum: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/my_forums Another free service
provided by VSS. 2. To those of us who grew up in SG or who have
lived here for a while, finding veg food is seldom a problem, but to our
fellow vegetarians or meat reducers who are new to our garden city (or is
it city in a garden?), finding veg food can be temporarily problematic.
Here is an email from one such person, followed by VSS's reply. I was looking out for
some places where I can have vegetarian in Singapore and found your
organisation. I was surprised and am
curious to know more. I have been a vegetarian for 11 years and left
non-veg by choice. (I simply did not want to kill animals for food)…I
was very young when I did this and now its simply a habit. It's quite a
task searching for vegetarian in Singapore and almost punishing.
I was hoping for some suggestions and meeting like minded people since I am
new to this city. Please do get in touch,
waiting to learn more, once again, truly intriguing… Thanks for being vegetarian and for contacting
VSS. You'll soon see that SG is one of the world's best countries for
finding vegetarian food, and every year, the veg scene becomes livelier.
For instance, the Food Outlets list on our website lists more than 500 veg
eateries: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=fdl. Also, we have a veg
restaurant guide, which can be purchased at book shops - http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=products#02
- with an iPhone version at http://mobyfab.com/blog/vss-foodguide-is-top10-app-in-singapore.
Plus, if you don't mind eating veg food at non-veg eateries, more and more
such establishments have more and more veg options. Last but not least, if
you want to meet new people (some veg, some non-veg) at the same time you
are meeting new eateries, check out some of the events held by Singapore
Vegetarian Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/singapore-vegetarian. Top
In addition, this issue of VegVibe includes the usual healthy harvest of
recipes and restaurant reviews, plus something new: an introduction to the
comic book Seven Years in Dog-Land, which explores we humans' relationship
with our fellow animals. Additionally, those looking for more ways to go
green will find some new opportunities. Last but not least, discover The
Veg School - www.thevegschool.net

Some VSS members are
very fond of collecting and sharing relevant quotations. Below are two. The
first was found on the Tumblr site mentioned above: http://veganash.tumblr.com Quote #1: Many of your
friends and family are confused, thinking people are omnivores, needing
both meat and plants in their diet. We only appear to be omnivorous because
we have the ability to "doctor up" meat with salt and sauces
(barbecue, sweet and sour, marinara, etc.) sufficiently enough to make it
palatable. Prove this for yourself. The next person you meet head-on who
claims meat is "tasty," stop him in his tracks and insist that he
eat a large plate of plain, unseasoned, boiled beef or boiled chicken in
front of you; note their displeasure. Then offer that same meal to the dog
or cat and note how eagerly this critter devours the meat. You would be
hard-pressed to find a person who did not enjoy a bowl of perfect, ripe
bananas, but try to get your cat to eat this sweet food. I have a
Rottweiler dog named Bodega who is a true omnivore and enjoys bananas as
much as meat. A careful observer notices that an animal's taste buds are no
mistake of nature — they clearly define the proper diet that the
animal should eat. — John A. McDougall, M.D., www.drmcdougall.com Quote #2: It is easier
to build strong children than to repair broken adults. — Edgar W.

Debunking the
Blood Type Diet
You've probably heard
about the blood type diet, which claims that certain blood types,
especially Type O, need to eat meat. Although the diet was formulated by a
doctor, it lacks scientific support, as is explained in the following
article. http://www.chicagotribune.com/health/sc-health-1026-type-o-vegetarian-20111026,0,4134478.story Do you want further
evidence that the blood type diet is not credible? One of the world's top
ultramarathoners, Scott Jurek, is Type O and a vegan: http://www.scottjurek.com/#/home.

average, compared to 80 kilograms per person in the industrial world".

As 2011 wanes, we pause
to reflect on the past year and then make fearless, often unrealistic plans
for the year ahead. Any advice for what VSS should strive to do in 2012? In
addition to our usual array of activities (see our past annual reports for
examples: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/node/1317),
we plan to participate in more food fairs, put out a new cookbook (based on
Dr Esselstyn's diet) and link with veg orgs elsewhere in Asia. Please send your advice

advice we can all try: every Thursday, celebrate Veggie Thursday with a

Letter to 'Mind Your
Body'
Mind Your Body is the health supplement that
appears every Thu in The Straits Times. A couple weeks ago, VSS received a
letter from a reader of the VSS eNewsletter asking that we respond to a
column in Mind Your Body that had, she felt, perhaps disrespected
vegetarianism. Here is our letter to MYB (to date, no reply has been
received) and the reader's letter to us: www.vegetarian-society.org/files/2011-mind-your-body.pdf Below is an excerpt
from the reader's letter to us. There's a write-up by
famous chef Ms Sylvia Tan in 'Mind Your Body' (Thu 1 Dec) and she
specifically wrote against vegetarian, saying that animal-based food contains
perfect proteins while plant-based food generally has incomplete proteins. It has been a difficult
journey for me to convert to full vegetarian and currently I'm still facing
strong opposition from my mother when I'm putting my children on a more
vegetarian-based diet. Thus such comments by a
famous foodist is not helping those who are in the same position as me, or
who are contemplating a switch into this wholesome diet. Can the Vegetarian
Society contact the editor of MYB and volunteer to contribute healthy
recipe as well? You can alternate with Sylvia Tan's weekly contribution and
provide tips on how plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients. This is
a kind of public education that can help to raise awareness about
vegetarian and even other alternatives like raw food diet. Famous
vegetarians can be invited to share their favourite recipes as well. Top
Recipe Testers
Needed
Back in 2006, VSS
published a recipe book, New Asian Traditions Vegetarian Cookbook which can
still be found occasionally in bookstores, as well as at about 19 branches of
National Library. Now, we're planning a
new recipe book. We have a tentative agreement to publish the book with
Straits Times Press in coordination with Singapore Heart Foundation. The
book is designed to be affordable and will feature about 30 recipes, all of
which follow the dietary guidelines set by Dr Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr.,
who did a series of talks and media appearances here last March, organised
by VSS. You may recall that Dr Esselstyn
recommends a very low fat vegan diet, with no added oil and no foods high
in oil, such as nuts, seeds and avocadoes: http://www.heartattackproof.com/ We have compiled most
of the recipes we need, and now we need a few people to test out the
recipes. Here are some of what the testers would check: 1. Each recipe lists a.
Preparation time, such as how long does it take to chop
all the veggies and spices b.
Cooking time, such as how long does it take to fry the
veggies. c.
Are the preparation time and the cooking time more or
less accurate? 2. Are the Steps
(a.k.a., instructions) clear? 3. Last but definitely
not least, does the dish taste good? Any suggestions for making it taste
better? Of course, different people have different tastes, and we'd like to
hear your view. If you can help, write
to info@... and we'll send you some
recipes to try at home. As this book is an education and fundraising
project, VSS cannot pay testers or reimburse for ingredients, etc. Thanks
for considering this. Top

donate to VSS http://www.vegetarian-society.org/seeds-of-hope
:). Just kidding. Actually, one of the parts of our web we receive the most
praise for is the Food Outlets page, which lists more than 500 veg restaurants,
stalls, etc. http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=fdl The trouble with such a
big list is that it's very difficult to update, with outlets opening,
closing, moving, changing their operating hours, etc. It takes all of us
newsletter readers and writers working together to manage this huge task. So, if you notice any
changes, please let us know: info@....
But, please do be careful. For example, just because a hawker stall is
closed at 3pm in the afternoon does not mean that the stall has gone out of
business. Maybe they open early in the morning and close for the day after
lunch. Thx for your help. Top

Recently, someone wrote
to VSS asking what our favourite veg restaurant is. Our answer is that we
love all veg eateries. From the point of view of the chickens, pigs, cows
and our other friends, every veg restaurant in a healthy, happy place, even
better if they don't serve eggs and dairy. And, Mother Earth feels the same
way. If you were not very happy
with the food at a veg place where you ate recently, why not make a gentle
suggestion to one of the staff or the manager/owner? Top

Eating More
Fruit/Veg Can Reduce Cancer Risk
The BBC reported that a
UK research review found that 40% of cancers diagnosed each year - over
130,000 in total - are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking,
drinking and eating the wrong things, specifically, not eating enough fruit
and veg: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16031149 One of the study's
authors stated, "Many people believe cancer is down to fate or 'in the
genes' and that it is the luck of the draw whether they get it. Looking at
all the evidence, it's clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by
things we mostly have the power to change". Please remember this the
next time a meat eater tells you that cancer is out of our hands. Top
Interview w/ the Founder
of VeganPeace
Wanda Ember is the
founder of the VeganPeace website: www.veganpeace.com,
a site loaded with useful features, including some online games. Recently,
one of our local blogs, Eco Walk The Talk, interviewed Wanda. You can read
the entire interview here: http://www.ecowalkthetalk.com/blog/
2011/12/08/wanda-embar-veganpeace Here's an excerpt. Do you believe a humane way to
raise animals for meat is possible? Embar: No. I really don't
believe that it is possible to commercially raise animals in a humane way.
Any commercial institution has to make economic decisions, to be able to
both exist and thrive. I believe that it is impossible to put animals'
lives in this equation, without it negatively affecting their quality of
life. It is simply impossible to meet the demand for animal products, while
treating animals compassionately. A few years ago I
contacted this small Dutch farm where they raise chickens for eggs. This
farm allowed you to 'adopt' chickens and to see them on a webcam. I asked
them about common issues in the egg industry. A woman, one of the owners of
the farm, answered me in an admirable honest way. She told me that they
indeed have to dispose of male chicks (which are useless in the egg
industry). She also mentioned that when the chickens are about 2 years old,
they are slaughtered, because their eggs become too fragile to transport.
She mentioned that as long as people demand animal products, they have to
make economic decisions like that. And this is of course true for all
animal industries, not just the egg industry. Top

Teresa Hsu &
VSS
The late Teresa Hsu was a passionate advocate of kindness to not just the
unfortunate, but also to all sentient beings. The VSS enjoyed working
closely with her and we never failed to mention in many of our talks around
Singapore
that the healthy humanitarian was a vegetarian too. And to highlight this
to others so that they may be inspired, we sent the following short note to
the Straits Times which was published on 16 Dec 2011:
"Vegan perspective of Teresa Hsu's
life
Ms Teresa Hsu's philosophy of life ('Singapore's 'Mother Teresa' dies at
113'; Wednesday) seemed to be: Live simply, so that others (including our
fellow animals) can simply live.
When asked to name her three main sources of joy, she replied: 'Sun
shining, birds singing, leaves dancing, in other words, the beauty of
nature.'
She did not need shark's fin and chilli crab to enjoy life. Ms Hsu's
enjoyment came from being with and helping others."
Following this letter, some expressed surprise that Sister Teresa had
actively advocated a plant-based diet. In fact, she has regularly worked
with the VSS for this purpose. For example, she spoke in 2009 as part of a
presentation by CornellUniversity nutrition
professor, T. Colin Campbell (author of The China Study), renowned for his
advocacy of plant-based diets. On another occasion, she hosted a Q&A
during a vegetarian food fair held at Chong Pang CC. In addition, her
charity, Heart to Heart Service, distributes exclusively vegetarian food.
So, yes, she did go out and promote the idea that we humans should not eat
our fellow animals.
A friend of the society shared her concern regarding the Mediacorp 8 show
'Healthy Dining' which portrays the hosts playing with some innocent
creatures in one scene before these same creatures were killed and turned
into 'delicacies' in the next. The worry was that the value of the life
that had been just sacrificed is being trivialised and she wondered if
advocacy groups could band together to weigh in on the issue.
Thus the following letter, signed jointly by Mr Louis Ng of ACRES, Dr
George Jacobs of VSS and Ms Jennifer Lee of Project: FIN, was submitted to
the Straits Times and was published on 31 Dec in its print edition.
"Singapore is changing. We are
becoming more compassionate towards our fellow animals. Laws protect
domesticated animals from abuse. Laws protect wild animals from being
trafficked. People rescue abandoned animals from shelters and take these
animals into their homes. People reject shark fin soup on festive
occasions. The zoo halts shows that force animals to perform unnatural
behaviours. Restaurants offer more vegetarian options on their menus.
Yes, increasing numbers of people in Singapore are recognising that non
human animals are indeed thinking, feeling beings who have a right to
respect, who have a reason for living beyond serving the whims of humans.
This change towards greater compassion by Singapore's government, people
and businesses makes it all the more disturbing to see the ‘Healthy Dining’
series on Channel 8. The series is shot in China, with the goal of
teaching the audience about healthy ingredients and how to prepare them.
Some of these ingredients come from animals, such as snakes and porcupines.
In the show about snakes, the hosts visit a snake farm and play with a
snake. Not soon after, we see stir fried snake served on a plate, snake in
a soup and a skinned snake.
In ‘Healthy Dining’, the animals are viewed only as objects of entertainment
for humans. Where, please, is the compassion? If meat must be eaten, can it
at least be done with some respect and compassion for the fellow beings
whose lives have been ended just to amuse us and to tingle our taste
buds?"
Feel free to paraphrase portions of this letter and send in your own
version to the press. Consumer demand is what dictates TV broadcasting, so
when the public objects to something, it is likely to be discontinued.
We hope that you have a
fabulous 2012 that builds upon the success of 2011. And as you achieve this
personal success and fulfillment, we would like to humbly ask that part of
your resolutions for the coming year is to be more actively involved in
advocacy and become a physical part of the cause. So do consider getting
involved with the multifarious projects that have been lined up and help
the VSS continue to make a difference in the lives of so many in Singapore.

Amazing Campaign in Toronto
In November, we
reported on a modest ad campaign that ran on the Toronto
subway system in Canada
that asked the question "Why love
one but eat the other?" The poster-sized ads in this series
drew attention to the similarities between the animals we call
"family" and the animals we call "dinner", and then
exposed the shocking cruelty that the pig, chicken, and cow face on today's
factory farms. A video clip showcasing people's reactions is now available
and illustrates how this campaign has been a huge success in changing
perceptions. Take a look and be inspired, then share it with all your

One VSS Member, Mr Jeffrey Ng, took the trouble to
research on the herbs that are included in the health tonic, Yomeishu, and
discovered that it contains one ingredient that was animal-derived.
"Hi, i like to highlight
that Yomeishu from Japan is not suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It is
not clear in the packaging and only says 'Yomeishu is a herbal health tonic
first produced in Japan in 1602 ... principal ingredients used in Yomeishu
are fourteen kinds of medicinal herbs'. In this case, it seems to tell
consumers it is a plant-based drink.
A layman will not know the
source of this derivative unless he has done the research, which in this
case points to "a genus of venomous pit vipers found in North America
from the United States south to northern Costa Rica" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/agkistrodon).
Specifically, agkistrodon refers
to the family of snake species comprising Cantil, Copperhead and
Cottonmouth. I hope to increase awareness among Singaporeans, especially
those who may believe Yomeishu to be a completely herbal drink."

A letter to the forum on 15 Dec suggested
that sharks were not endangered and that many sharks are actually killed by
large-scale fishing methods such as longlines. Jennifer Lee of Project: FIN
replied to counter this argument and pointed out that conversation efforts
are multi-pronged and address both fishing methods as well as cultural
practices. In addition, Edwin Tan illustrated the irony that, while
millions of sharks suffer the brutality of having their fins cut off while
alive and being thrown back into the water to drown, "If there is just
one dog found left on the streets to die after all its four limbs were cut
off, the case would spark global anger."

The 'Sai Protein Service Project' is a community service project undertaken
by the Ladies' Wing of Sri Sathya Sai Society. Sai Protein is a powder rich
in protein that can be dissolved in hot water to prepare a health drink
which may be served to anyone - be it children, adults or the aged and
elderly.
The Ladies' Wing has undertaken this simple yet
fulfilling service project for the transient migrant workers on Serangoon
Road from Jan 2011 with due permission for distribution from the NEA. The
transient migrant workers, served by the Cuff Road Project run by TWC2, are
workers without a job and earnings, primarily due to work-site injury or
other reasons.
To prepare, clean ingredients by checking for
insects, stones etc. and then dry-roast them in a thick¨Cbottomed pan on low
flame (except cardamom and sugar). Grind the dry-roasted ingredients
together and, separately, the cardamon and sugar before mixing the 2 ground
sets together. Mix 45g of the mixture to a cup of hot water for a
nutritious drink.
Ingredients for 25kg of Sai
Protein:
Wheat (6kg), Boiled Rice (1.5kg), Ragi - i.e. millet (1.5kg), Green Gram -
i.e. green chickpeas (1.5kg), Green Moong - i.e. green lentil (1.5kg), Soft

Ever since NutriHub left Cuppage Plaza for Temple Street, Orchard Road has
seemed like a bit of a desert for vegetarians. (The flooding there was not
a flood of veg food, unfortunately, although many non-veg places do offer
veg options.) Be informed that other veg eateries do exist along Orchard -
one such quaint stall is located at the basement of Lucky Plaza. Open from
Monday to Saturday, from 6.30am to 6.00pm, it is called Fancy Vegetarian.
To learn more about this place, please visit http://www.vegetarian-society.org/node/1138.
And if you know of other veg places along Orchard
like this one, do update us by sending us an email at info@... - that way, we can share it with

The new Healthy Eating Plate created by nutrition experts at Harvard School
of Public Health in conjunction with Harvard Health Publications, offers a
blueprint for planning a healthy balanced meal and "fixes key flaws in
the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate".
Notably, it advises limiting milk and dairy intake
because " high intakes are associated with increased risk of prostate
cancer and possibly ovarian cancer" and advocates limiting "red
meat - beef, pork, and lamb - and avoid processed meats - bacon, cold cuts,
hot dogs, and the like - since over time, regularly eating even small amounts
of these foods raises the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colon
cancer".

There are many weight-loss plans centred around the vegan diet but there is
little research to conclusively support this rationale. The following
article by a dietician discusses the issue from a neutral perspective and
suggests planning for a healthier lifestyle rather than being focussed on
weight-loss.
Vegan bodybuilder Michelle Risley was interviewed by PETA recently and
shared how easy it was to adopt a plant-based diet without having to
compromise on her fitness lifestyle. Check out the interview - as well as
an inspirational video of what motivated her to become a vegan bodybuilder,
her workout program, her nutrition, and how she transformed her body to
stay fit and healthy.
Do you feel like you have gained a few pounds over the holidays or feel
bloated? Is your food causing you more harm than good? We ingest many
chemicals from our environment so going on a detox for 3 days can help
promote the elimination of the toxins our body harbours. To help you get
started, a Post-Holiday Detox Session is being conducted on 18 Jan to help
revitalise and rejuvenate your body with natural foods and home remedies.
Besides a lecture and Q&A round, the session
will also include a health kitchen demo with preparation of detox drinks,
salads and even a detox dessert that you can enjoy (you will be able to
take home the recipes).

Every year, the United
Nations organises World Water Day to focus attention on how precious water
is. This year, the theme is on food, including the hidden water in food,
for example, everything we eat needed water. However, as the UN points out,
some foods use and pollute more water than do other foods. In particular,
the "water footprint" of meat tends to be much larger than the
water footprint of plant based foods. To raise public
awareness of the hidden water in food, Veggie Thursday – www.veggiethursday.sg
– a project of 25+ local NGOs (including VSS) is holding a dinner on
22 March, World Water Day. Visit the Veggie Thursday website or FB page for

'So Frail and Weak'
For the VSS eNewsletter, editing duties are
shared by Gangasudhan and George Jacobs. Recently, George received the
following forwarded email from Shi'an who has at least two things in common
with George: both eat plant based diets and both edit enewsletters. The
email was sent to Shi'an by someone who is a former vegetarian. I saw George Jacobs
today. He looks so frail and weak and I think his Vegan diet is not
well-balanced enough. However, I consider the odds. I shall stick to more
Vegetables and little meat because it's beyond cost, efforts, ability, etc
to go back to a Vegetarian diet again. I need to eat and very balance...
not easy, look at Jacobs. George replied: Thanks for forwarding
this. Always nice to know how others see you. Pls tell that person I
challenge them to a swimming race, a walking race, or a tennis or badminton
match. Cheers. After a few minutes reflection, George added: Actually, what bothers me
more than what the comment says about me is what it says about how people
think. Do their thoughts bounce around like a ping pong ball, so that when
they see a vegan who, according to their definition, is healthy, they think
being vegan makes you healthy, and then 10 minutes later, if they see a
vegan who doesn't match their definition of healthy, they change their mind
and think, "No, being a vegan will make me unhealthy". Every five years,
people should be required to do a refresher course in the scientific
method. [if u don't mind, pls send this along, too. BTW, I'm perfectly
happy to let this person remain anonymous. This discussion isn't personal.] Later, George's new friend (as the Chinese saying
puts it, "If we never fight, how can we ever come to know each
other") replied directly to him: I understand that Mr.
Shi'an had emailed you my comment about you. First of all, I would like to
extend my apologies for being rude. Secondly, the reason
why I am giving up on Vegetarianism is because I am having weak limbs and
body. I also do not know what's the best way to go on a Vegetarian diet. Due to the push from
you and Mr. Shi'an, I decided to give another try on Vegetarianism, but I
would urgently need "sample meals" (Chinese ones preferred) to get
started. I would like to be a lacto-ovo for the time being. I think not all
people are suitable for a vegetarian diet. Please help me reconsider
vegetarianism again. Thanks. Finally, George replied: No offense taken.
Indeed, I like it when people are frank. I'm very glad that you
have decided to give vegetarianism another try. As Shi'an pointed out,
everyone is different, although 100s of millions of people in India seem
to have done well on vegetarian diets. Attached is a list of
health professionals who have a special interest in vegetarianism. For
their regular fee, they will be happy to help you assess any special needs
you might have. As to restaurants,
firstly, vegetarian food abounds in SG, even at non-veg eateries. Also,
many veg stalls offer egg dishes, and dairy products, while not common in
Chinese eateries, are readily available at supermarkets, Italian eateries,
Indian eateries and sandwich shops. Good luck. Feel free to
stay in touch. And my offer regarding tennis, etc. still holds. Cheers
--george BTW, it's very unlikely that anyone has ever
described Ganga, the other editor of the
VSS enewsletter, as frail and weak. Top

1. Recently, someone
wrote to VSS asking what our favourite veg restaurant is. Our answer is
that we love all veg eateries. From the point of view of the chickens,
pigs, cows and our other friends, every veg restaurant in a healthy, happy
place, even better if they don't serve eggs and dairy. And, Mother Earth
feels the same way. If you were not very
happy with the food at a veg place where you ate recently, why not make a
gentle suggestion to one of the staff or the manager/owner? 2. Someone else asked
about whether beer and other alcoholic beverages are plant based. The
answer to that question, like with most food questions, is tricky. Here's
the best information source we are aware of: http://www.barnivore.com/# Top

Visit the Veg Food
Fair at Jurong Point – 21 & 22 Apr
To celebrate Earth Day, The VSS and Jurong Point are joining hands to
conduct a veg food fair for the shoppers at Jurong Point. Comprising of
food demos and booths by Delcie's, Fave, Zen Xin and Brownice, some
interesting products will be on display for the public to sample and
purchase. The event will be over 2 days across the special weekend and we
hope to engage the many who visit the shopping centre.
As this will be an all-day event, we are in need of as many volunteers as
possible to help us reach out to the voluminous crowd that is expected. If
you have some time on your hands next weekend and would like to make an
impact on behalf of the veg movement, please drop our Operations
Coordinator an email at ganga@....
