Hard Truths About
Heart Health – 27Mar
Dr Caldwell
Esselstyn’s research leaves him no doubt – If we’re not
eating a plant based diet, we are giving ourselves heart disease. Every
meal containing animal based foods, including dairy and eggs, is an assault
on our coronary system. Heart disease is one of the leading killers in SG.
But according to Dr Essy, the proper plant powered diet can save many
people and their families from the suffering and sorrow heart disease
inflicts. We in SG are very
fortunate to have an opportunity to hear first hand from this disease
conquering guru who will be here for only a few days, most of which are
taken up by meeting with medical professionals and the media. Dr
Esselstyn’s public talk is one you don’t want to miss. Even if
you are already on a plant based diet, you may learn something new. Dr Essy has already
appeared, via phone interview, on Singapore radio: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/

Exhibition at
Temasek JC
From 7–11 Mar,
VSS held an exhibition at Temasek JC as part of the college’s Health
Week. During the same week, we did a talk. Our goal was to raise awareness
of the poor health trends in Singapore and to urge everyone
to do their best to promote prevention. After all, prevention is surer,
cheaper and less painful than cure. One suggestion we made was to increase
the quantity and quality of plant based food in the JC’s canteen. Top
At Lianhe Wanbao
Health & Beauty Fair
Previously, VSS
exhibited at the Lianhe Wanbao Health & Beauty Fair at Suntec. This
year, we were invited for the opening ceremony for the 5 & 6 Mar event
and took the opportunity to network with this year’s exhibitors, in
particular to tell them about Dr Essy’s upcoming visit. The exhibitor that was
most interested in promoting Dr Essy’s visit was Four Seasons Organic
Market. They have outlets at City Square Mall, GreatWorldCity and Parkway
Parade. Four Seasons is not 100% veg, but they are about 95% veg and offer
many healthy veg products for our kitchens. Plus, the City Square outlet has a café. Top
At Benefit Dinner
for Mahabodhi Monastery
On 5 Mar, VSS was
represented at a benefit dinner for Mahabodhi Monastery, and we had a free
half-page ad in the programme distributed at the dinner. In his opening
address, the monastery’s abbot, the Venerable Guojin, highlighted the
commonalities among religions and noted the presence at the dinner of a
Catholic priest. Indeed, VSS works with all religions, as they all advocate
kindness towards our fellow beings, and, without doubt, a kind diet is a
vegetarian diet. Top
Oatmeal: Try
VSS’s Recipes Instead of McD’s
Oatmeal is one of the
recipes in the free VSS publication, ‘Meat Less in Singapore’. It’s a very
healthy and flexible dish; we can make it sweet or savoury, adding almost
anything that tickles our fancy. Now, McD’s is
adding oatmeal to their menu, at least in the U.S. Find out their
‘unique’ approach as to recipe and price: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/

‘Meat Less …’ is a deluxe savoury recipe. (The url above
has suggestions for a sweet recipe.) 5 c water 1/2 c rolled oats
(whole, not instant) 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 soybean curd sheets
or 1 piece of “dou pau” Salt to taste 1 tsp mushroom
seasoning Spring onion and
coriander leaves to garnish 1. Sauté onion and
garlic in small amount of water till fragrant. 2. Add water and bring
to a boil. 3. Add dou pau and oats
to cook. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 mins 4. Garnish with spring
onion, coriander leaves. Top
Our Restaurant App
Gets Popular
There are now about 600
downloads of the VSS Veg Restaurant app in total, according to sales trends
at Apple iTunes Connect. The app went as high as the Top 10 for Lifestyle
apps in the Singapore Apple store. The ranking has declined; however, at
last check, it was still in the Top 100 in the Lifestyle category. An update of the VSS
Food Guide app should be done soon. Please keep sending in changes and
additions of eateries to the VSS Food Guide. Top

Vegetarians can be
found in all religions and among those with no religion. Here’s an
example from Judaism, a religion not normally associated with
vegetarianism. This is from the newsletter of Jewish Vegetarians of North America: http://jewishveg.blogspot.com Of course, as in all
religions, Jews differ among themselves in their views. Most Jews are not
vegetarians. I can sum up
"my" views regarding the relationship of Human Beings to
non-Human life, nature and the environment simply. (Of course, there are
other valid paths to becoming a vegetarian.) It is simple for me because I
accept the following (Torah) axioms: 1) Ha'Shem (G-D) is the
eternal, infinite, almighty. omniscient, all-merciful
(compassionate/loving) Source of ALL there is. 2) HIS attribute of
love motivates HIM to create a Being (Human by virtue of the DIVINE gift of
free moral choice) less than HIM (necessarily) to choose to (lovingly) seek
HIM. Any student of psychology will affirm that "love" is a
benevolent emotional relationship chosen between two FREE participants. 3) Nature and the
animal world are created to be Man's assistants in this quest. The
non-Human creatures are (like Man) BEINGS not THINGS. They (like Man)
belong ONLY to G-D. Each (like Man) has a unique soul and mission, which
will be fulfilled. ALL (like Man) are rewarded by G-D for this service. 4) Humans are commanded
to emulate G-D's attributes of loving kindness, mercy and compassion. 5) Man's survival has
the highest priority in G-D's plan. From the above, one may
conclude that Man's behavior towards the animal world is
explicitly/stringently dictated and regulated by the commandments just as
it is towards his fellow men. Man may not act in a whimsical self-centered
fashion towards non-Humans. Man must protect and conserve the world created
for his benefit. Man may take non-Human
life ONLY IF it is necessary to ensure his survival. Humane methods are
demanded by G-D. Failure to recognize these principles with the frivolous
use of G-D's creatures as objects/commodities is cruel abuse. This is expressly
forbidden and condemned by G-D. We do so at our peril. Top

About Soy
Soy is a great
source of protein and other nutrients. Yet, some concerns have been
expressed. Here’s one more study suggesting that actually no special
reason exists for concern about soy. The Women’s
Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) study is a randomized controlled trial of
a high fruit/vegetable/fibre and low fat dietary intervention in early
stage breast cancer survivors in the USA. It had a median follow-up
of 7.3 years from the time of enrolment. Soy intake was measured
post-diagnosis (median 2 years, range: 2 months to 4 years) using a food
frequency questionnaire that included specific items for “Meat
Substitutes (such as Tofu, Veggie Burgers),” and “Soy
Milk”, as well as an opportunity to include other soy foods and
supplements. Isoflavone intake (the
marker for soy) was unrelated to the risk of recurrence regardless of
hormone receptor status or Tamoxifen use. No significant increased or
decreased risk was associated with any specific level of intake. Risk of
death tended to be lower as isoflavone intake increased (p for trend=0.02).
Women at the highest levels of isoflavone intake (>16.3 mg/day
isoflavones; equivalent to at least 1/2 cup soymilk or 2 oz tofu) had a
non-significant 54% reduction in risk of death compared to the lowest
quintile of soy intake. The authors state: Our study is the third
epidemiological study to report no adverse effects of soy foods on breast
cancer prognosis. These studies, taken together, which vary in ethnic composition
(two from the US and one
from China)
and by level and type of soy consumption, provide the necessary
epidemiological evidence that clinicians no longer need to advise against
soy consumption for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Reference Caan BJ, Natarajan L,

Tips from the
Esselstyns
Here are some tips
collected unofficially from the Esselstyns’ talks. 1. Put green, leafy
vegetables in everything you can 2. There are only two unhealthy parts of
an egg: the egg white and the yoke 3. We do not need to
eat oils to obtain healthy fats; many plant foods, including beans, contain
healthy fats 4. We should not eat
anything with a face or a mother 5. People in SG should
continue to be generous and hospitable; the Esselstyns, who were hosted by
Dr Kanwaljit Soin and her husband, greatly appreciated their warm welcome
here 6. Heart disease,
diabetes, many cancers, obesity and many other diseases are essentially the
same food based disease; we can avoid them by eating right 7. Heart disease is a
toothless paper tiger 8. Heart surgery should
only be necessary when someone is in the middle of a heart attack 9. We cannot use
exercise to compensate for a bad diet 10. Dairy is full of
unhealthy fat and does not make our bones healthy. For much more
information: http://www.heartattackproof.com Top

Esselstyns’ public talk, we showed a trailer for the upcoming film,
Forks Over Knives, which features the Esselstyns and Prof T. Colin

Veg Diets Reduce
Cataract Risk
American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition, 2011 Mar 23. Diet, vegetarianism,
and cataract risk. Appleby PN, Allen NE,
Key TJ. Cancer Epidemiology
Unit, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University
of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom. Abstract BACKGROUND: Age-related cataract is a
major cause of morbidity. Previous studies of diet and cataract risk have
focused on specific nutrients or healthy eating indexes but not on
identifiable dietary groups such as vegetarians. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the
association between diet and cataract risk in a population that has a wide
range of diets and includes a high proportion of vegetarians. DESIGN: We used Cox proportional
hazards regression to study cataract risk in relation to baseline dietary
and lifestyle characteristics of 27,670 self-reported nondiabetic
participants aged >=40 y at recruitment in the Oxford (United Kingdom)
arm of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
(EPIC-Oxford) by using data from the Hospital Episode Statistics in England
and Scottish Morbidity Records. RESULTS: There was a strong relation
between cataract risk and diet group, with a progressive decrease in risk
of cataract in high meat eaters to low meat eaters, fish eaters (participants
who ate fish but not meat), vegetarians, and vegans. After multivariable
adjustment, incidence rate ratios (95% CIs) for moderate meat eaters (50-99
g meat/d), low meat eaters (<50 g meat/d), fish eaters, vegetarians, and
vegans compared with high-meat eaters (>=100 g meat/d) were 0.96 (0.84,
1.11), 0.85 (0.72, 0.99), 0.79 (0.65, 0.97), 0.70 (0.58, 0.84), and 0.60
(0.38, 0.96), respectively (P < 0.001 for heterogeneity). Associations
between cataract risk and intakes of selected nutrients and foods generally
reflected the strong association with diet group. CONCLUSION: Vegetarians were at lower
risk of cataract than were meat eaters in this cohort of health-conscious
British residents. Top

Your Growth
Dividend from the Government: Put It To Good
Use!
9 April 2011 Due to the good
economic times of late, the Government has given Singaporeans a bit of
extra money. This letter is an appeal for you to donate some of that money
(even just $10) to support the hardworking, shoestring education efforts of
Vegetarian Society. Dear Reader of the VSS
eNewsletter, As you know from your
free eNewsletter, since 1999, Vegetarian
Society (Singapore) has been educating the public about why and how to
eat less or no meat. a. We explain the
benefits for human health, for example, at the recent talks by heart
expert, Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure. Singapore's
killer diseases - heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes - are all linked
to meat eating. b. We make people aware
that meat harms our environment and worsens climate change, such as the
many talks we have done for students and teachers, such as at a talk to the
Geography Teachers Association this Saturday (9 April). c. We highlight that
moving away from meat is an act of kindness for our fellow animals, who
suffer terribly on their cruel journey to people's plates. For instance,
last month, we spoke to 300+ students at an SPCA seminar. d. We teach people how
to prepare their own healthy, plant based foods, and we show people where
to find vegetarian food stalls and restaurants. e. We also do public
exhibitions and work with a wide range of other organisations. We do all this work
without an office and with only one staff member. More funds would enable
us to serve you and Singapore
better. We hope that you will
continue to support us in our work with educating people on the many
benefits of eating less or no meat. From 5 April 2011,
Singaporeans who are eligible for the 2011 Growth Dividend will be
receiving letters from the Government informing them of their payout. If you are
eligible, you may donate all or part of your Growth Dividend to charity by
visitingwww.growandshare.gov.sg. If you are not eligible
for the Growth Dividend but still wish to donate, you are welcome to do so
using the website http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss.
You may donate using PayPal or by cheque. Whether it be $10 or
$100 or other amount, your donation will go a long way to help us continue
our charitable work for people, the environment and the non-human animals. Thank you for your
support.

Our Talk at
Republic Poly
For the past four
years, VSS has done an annual talk at Republic Poly explaining the many
benefits of eating less or no meat, and countering reasons people give for
continuing to eat a diet high in animal based foods. Our talk always
generates a good crowd, filling a small lecture theatre, sometimes even
with students sitting on the stairs. This year¡¯s
speaker was the editor of VegVibe magazine - www.vegvibe.com - Mr Ganga Sudhan. Vegvibe is an
independent local publication which appears every two months in hard copy
and online. The hard copy version is distributed free at veg eateries.

Talk to Geography
Teachers
A VSS representative
spoke to 190 teachers at the Geography Teachers Association¡¯s annual
seminar, on 9 Apr at Park Royale Hotel. The VSS speaker highlighted the
cruelty of modern factory farming by comparing our image of farming, as
seen in the children¡¯s song, 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm¡¯, and
the reality that our fellow animals are trapped in today. Teachers were reminded
that vegetarianism needed by either / or, and that middle ground exists,
such as trends along the lines of Veggie Thursday - www.veggiethursday.sg. As always, we spoke of
VSS¡¯s willingness to work with students and teachers to make schools
more animal-friendly places. For instance, we can work with canteen
operators to offer more and healthier vegetarian options. Top
Put Your Growth
Dividend To Good Use
This issue of the VSS
eNewsletter gives a good idea of all that VSS does to promote healthy and
wise lifestyles. We could do a lot more with more funding. Fortunately,
many Singaporeans are receiving a gift from the government; maybe
you¡¯d like to invest some of that in promoting sane living. From 5 April 2011,
Singaporeans who are eligible for the 2011 Growth Dividend will be
receiving letters from the Government informing them of their payout. If you are eligible,
you may donate all or part of your Growth Dividend to charity by visiting www.growandshare.gov.sg. If you are not eligible
for the Growth Dividend but still wish to donate, you are welcome to do so
using the website http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss.
You may donate using PayPal or by cheque. Whether it be $10 or
$100 or other amount, your donation will go a long way to help us continue
our charitable work for people, the environment and the non-human animals. Thank you for your
support. Top
Letter to ST Forum
A VSS member sent the
following to The Straits Times Forum page. It seems that it has not been
published. By way of background, statins are a class of drugs used to lower
cholesterol. In addition to writing
to forum pages, another idea is to write a comment in an online fora, such
as http://www.straitstimes.com/ST+Forum/ST+Forum.html.
Registration is often required, but it¡¯s one time and free. I REFER to
¡®Getting to the heart of statin use¡¯ by Andy Ho (Apr 2). The
article discusses doubts about the widespread use of statins in the
treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD). Fortunately, another
evidence-based path exists for combating CHD and lowering cholesterol: diet
change. Last month, Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., Director of the
Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal Program at the Cleveland
Clinic Wellness Institute, was in Singapore to speak with
cardiologists and others. His research, published
in the American Journal of Cardiology and since replicated, describes how
moving to a plant-based, oil-free diet saved the lives of heart disease
patients. Adopting such a diet wasn¡¯t easy for Dr Esselstyn¡¯s
patients in the U.S.,
but most of them have stayed on that diet for more than 15 years, as
described in his book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. Consider the
alternatives to diet change: seriously impaired health, untimely death,
medicines with side effects and expensive surgery with the attendant risks
and with the probability that the symptoms will recur. Fortunately, Singapore
is a good place for adopting such a plant-based diet, as the culinary
wizards in our food paradise, including those at our approximately 100
vegetarian restaurants, enjoy a challenge and look forward to serving their
customers¡¯ gustatory and health requests. Top

monitoring system for the cows¡¯ welfare at this farm, or do we have
to trust the company to tell us the truth? 2. How is the price of
the milk affected by this supposed betterment of the cows¡¯ welfare? 3. What is the average
life span of the cows compared to their natural life span? 4. What happens when
calves are born? How long do they stay with their mothers? What happens to
the calves when they leave their mothers? 5. Are any methods used
to increase a cow¡¯s milk production above the normal rate? 6. What happens to the
cows once they are no longer producing at an optimal rate? Are they allowed

protein we need from plant foods? Thanks again for

Env Exhibition at
St Margaret’s Secondary
VSS has a wide range of
exhibition materials, including colourful posters and thought provoking
statues. As part of the Earth Week events at St Margaret’s Secondary,
VSS was invited to put up some of our exhibition materials for the week of
11-15 Apr. Our exhibition shows
how reducing our meat consumption can help address climate change, world
starvation and the poor health epidemic. We always offer to do talks and to
show videos along with our exhibition; however, in this instance, no VSS
speaker was needed, as a group of students did a very good job of making
the case that meat harms the environment. Now, that’s progress! Similarly, a couple
months back, two VSS members served as judges for an island-wide speech
contest on the environment for upper primary school students. After the
contest, some adults spoke to the students on the same theme.
Unfortunately, there was no space in the programme for the VSS members to
speak on the meat-env connection. Fortunately, during question time, one of
the primary school students raised the connection to one of the speakers,
an NUS lecturer, who agreed that yes, we should be green by eating less
meat. Let’s hope that these students are backing up their excellent
words with excellent deeds by going veg. Top

Food and the
Elections
During election
campaigns, politicians are known for walking around kissing babies, shaking
hands and eating food. However, food should play a larger role in the
upcoming General Elections. In the election campaign,
all we seem to hear about regarding food is the price of food, but the real
price of the food we eat is seen in our worsening health situation, in
escalating environmental damage and in the horrifying lives of the animals
whom are trapped in the mad meat production system. Food is literally a
matter of life and death, as our escalating consumption of meat and other
animal based foods is leading to a tsunami of negative consequences. Please take every
opportunity to raise these food related issues to the various parties
during the campaign. This is a chance to get their attention and engage
them in a serious discussion of SG’s favourite pastime. Top
Restaurants That
Can Do ‘No Added Oil’ Dishes
In addition to
recommending that we eat an exclusively plant based diet, Dr Caldwell B
Esselstyn, Jr., who spoke here back in March, also recommends cooking
without oil. He believes that oil damages the lining of our blood vessels,
contains little nutrition and helps make us fat. VSS put together this
short list of veg restaurants that can cook plant based dishes for us
without using oil: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/files/oil-free-rest.pdf. No doubt, many other
veg eateries can do the same. For instance, the next time you order dosa,
ask them to cook it without oil. Still tastes nice. Top
The VSS InBox
This is the second
instalment of a VSS representative dialogue with a vegetarian student from
an Indian international school. Dear VSS (from the
student) Thank you for your
feedback. I am actually a vegetarian myself and we do try to use minimum
processed food and look through labels to find out whether products contain
meat products. A few things I found
out are: – Most
companies use cow bone char as the preferred filter for cane sugar
refinement. – Jellies
and marshmallows contain gelatine (used to make Jello and other desserts)
which is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. An
alternative substance is called Agar-Agar, which is derived from seaweed. VSS replied You’re right. In
fact, it’s impossible to live in civilization and not be involved in
the exploitation of our fellow animals. Even non-food items contain elements
derived from animals. Plus, our cars, planes and other vehicles kill
many animals accidentally. The answer, I believe,
is not to spend all one’s time trying to achieve the impossible task
of being pure. The answer is to spend some of one’s time convincing
others to: a. see fellow
animals as the thinking, feeling beings that they are, beings worthy of
respect, not objects to be used b. stop eating
meat, as meat is the #1 way we harm other animals. Thanks for dialoguing
on this. ––VSS Top

While VSS is a secular
organisation, we do recognise that for many people spirituality plays a
major role in their decision to eat less or no meat. Thus, we appreciate
the many spiritual leaders who urge people to show kindness to our fellow
animals via their dietary choices. One such spiritual
leader was Sai Baba who passed away on 24 Apr. Here is an example of his
words on why to go veg: [W]ith meat the body
will get the proteins, but mental proteins will not be there. If you are
keen on spiritual life, eating meat is not worthwhile; but if you are keen
on worldly life, it is all right. There is another spiritual reason. When
you kill an animal you give him suffering, pain, harm. God is in every
creature, so how can you give such pain? Sometimes when someone beats a dog
he cries, he feels so much pain. How much more pain then in killing.
Animals did not come for the purpose of supplying food to human beings.
They came to work out their own life in the world. When a human being is
dead, the foxes and other animals may eat, but we have not come to provide
food for those that eat the human body; we have not come for that ourpose.
Similarly, man eats the animal, but the animal has not come to provide man
with food. John S. Hislop, Conversation with Sathya Sai
Baba, p. 19 Top

Learn More about
VSS’s SG Veg Food Guide
VSS recently published
a new edition of our Singapore Vegetarian Food Guide: http://www.vegetarian-
society.org/?q=products#02. This is in addition to the veg eatery
listing on our website
and our iPhone app: http://mobyfab.com/blog/vss-foodguide-is-
top10-app-in-singapore. 1. How did
VSS come up with the idea of a Singapore Vegetarian Food
Guide? Credit must go to STB
(Singapore Tourism Board) for this. Demand for veg food, especially among
Indian and Chinese tourists, led STB to approach us with the idea. 2. What
are the features and parts of the food guide, and how is it organised? Probably 90% or more of
local veg restaurants are featured, as well as a select few non-veg
eateries (that have a large veg selection). Readers tell us that the way it
is organised - by districts - makes it easy to find outlets in their area.
The current edition also has an index, so you can find restaurants by name. 3. Putting
together a food guide is a big job. How did you
manage to do it? It was a huge effort
indeed, but we had a great team of enthusiastic veg foodies who went around
Singapore
visiting and reviewing 100+ restaurants. 4. Does
VSS make money or lose money on the food guide? Hopefully, we are able
to break even. Hopefully, people will buy copies for their friends. It also
supports the veg eateries, many of whom struggle to cover their overhead. 5. How is
the guide distributed? We work with Pansing, a

Meeting w/
A*STAR’s Healthcare and Lifestyle
On 3 May, two VSS
members met with an officer of A*STAR’s Healthcare and Lifestyle
Programme, 61 Biopolis Drive.
A*STAR is expanding its food research. For instance, they are involved in
the 2011 opening of a Clinical Nutrition Lab at NUS as part of the Singapore
Institute of Clinical Studies to do controlled studies of nutrition. A*STAR also works on
research on food manufacturing, such as how manufacturing can maximize the
availability of nutrients; just because a nutrient is there in the factory
doesn’t mean it’s there when we eat the food. VSS shared some of our
international contacts for doing nutrition/health research, such as
Professor T Colin Campbell and Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. both of whom
VSS helped bring to SG to speak to health experts and the public, as well
as Dr Duo Li, professor of Nutrition at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou and
editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Prof Li is
chairing the Asia Vegetarian Congress this Nov in Hangzhou. We also talked to the
A*STAR staff member about B12, more complete food labelling and about doing
things with schools. She suggested that we try to work more with HPB. Top
Survey on Diet in
SG
Journalists,
researchers, students and others often ask VSS, “How many vegetarians
are there in SG, and has that number increased?” The only honest
answer we can give is that we don’t know, although we suspect that
the number of vegetarians is increasing. We say, “We
don’t know” in part because there are many definitions of
“vegetarian”, and before we can say how many vegetarians there
are, first we need to decide what a vegetarian is. Most importantly, we
need a credible way to count vegetarians. Here’s an idea.
We’ve read about surveys done in the UK and US. We contacted the
company that did this 2009 US
poll: http://www.vrg.org/press/2009poll.htm.
They would be happy to do something similar, with smaller numbers, for us.
For USD4000, they will do an email poll with 300 randomly stratified
people. If you’d like to
help, please make a targeted donation: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss#donate Top
Interviewed on Australia
Radio
“Sticks and
stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me” is an old
children’s rhyme, but maybe words are more powerful than we think.
Maybe the words we use both reflect and affect what we do. Recently, a VSS Exco
member was interviewed earlier this month on Australia radio on the topic
of the use of ‘who’ instead of ‘which’ when
referring to nonhuman animals, as in the sentence, “The chickens who
were slaughtered today were probably less than six weeks old”. You can listen to the
interview online at www.abc.net.au/rn/linguafranca.
Look for the ‘who/which project’. Top
Interns provide
organisations with youthful, low cost energy, and being an intern can be a
great experience for a young person, especially being an intern with VSS,
where interns do meaningful, life saving work and get to meet lots of
friendly, dedicated people. However, being an intern isn’t easy: pay
is very low, and because VSS has no office, our interns need to be self
starters. Thus, it’s too
bad that VSS took so long to engage our first intern, who started on 3 May
and serves until end July. Fortunately, our intern, an SMU student, is a
real gem: well-organised, energetic and friendly. We hope to have more
interns in the future. Top

link skilled professionals with community groups: http://www.thekindexchange.com A VSS member and our
intern (see the above article) enthusiastically participated in the evening

volunteers, as well as introducing VSS to the Kind Exchange community. It was a fruitful event
where we found many like-minded individuals, many of whom were already veg

general public’s awareness of the importance of holistic wellness in
our everyday life and of the need to care for our environment. This year,
the event will be held on 30 August, on Level 5 of the Singpost Bldg, next

theme that runs through the Symposium. There will also be a mini holistic
fair for participants to learn more about the upcoming workshops and
programmes at Kampong Senang, purchase organic food items, such as healthy
burgers and salads. The dual-language
Symposium comprises two sessions, the English session in the morning from
8am to 1pm and the Chinese session in the afternoon from 1.30pm to 6pm. The
English session will feature a panel of four Singaporean speakers who will
share their personal “healing” stories and various ways of
healing from “East-West Approach to Healing”, “Awaken
Your Healing Power”, “Mindful Living: Your Key to Healing and
Abundance” and “Mother Nature and Holistic Wellness”. In the Mandarin
session, Mr Low Chip Khoon will share about global warming. There are also

dimension of life through his “heart empowerment” techniques.
Ms Shi Ru Jun will also inject refreshing perspectives on how to eradicate

ACRES ¨C
Public Forum on Animal Welfare
Over the years, there
has been much concern about animal welfare issues in Singapore.
There has been increasing media coverage on these issues, and members of
the public have voiced their concerns through emails to AVA,
on newspaper forums, blogs and on facebook. Organised by ACRES in
collaboration with Chong Pang grassroots and with the support of Minister K
Shanmugam, the first-ever Public Forum on Animal Welfare Policies gives you
the opportunity to be engaged; it gives you the opportunity to voice your
concerns; and it gives you the opportunity to help shape animal welfare
policies in Singapore.
VSS will have a booth, and we hope to raise veg issues. ACRES also promotes
veg. Here are the details: Date: Sat, 18 Jun Time: 2pm-5pm Venue: Chong Pang Community Club Hall,

share with the student population the following week, Earth Week. The big show was the
following week at an Assembly Talk for Sec 1 and 2. First, three students
from the Environment Club and a VSS member did a dialogue with two videos
about why it's green to eat less meat. Then, with the help of other
Environment Club members, we demo-ed smoothie making, and all 800+ students
had a chance to taste the delicious results. Top

was a simple one: Maybe the most powerful action we can take for Earth is
to reduce or eliminate our consumption of animal based foods. Plus, going
vegetarian can be easy, tasty and fun. Start small, such as with Veggie
Thursday, and start with a buddy who is already veg or wants to try, and

Why Vegetarians
Weigh Less
This short, simple
article attempts to explain the growing body of data which suggests
vegetarians generally weigh less than meat eaters. Of course, diet is one
of many factors affecting weight. Below is an excerpt.
USDA = US Department of Agriculture. You can read the entire article at http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/
why-do-vegetarians-and-vegans-weigh-less.html This is the first year
ever that the USDA has embraced a vegetarian diet. In its 2010 dietary
pyramid, the USDA gave vegetarianism an outright endorsement saying in
addition to improved heart health, a vegetarian diet was associated with
lower rates of obesity. Another study in 2009 by Oxford researcher Tim Key found that
vegetarians and vegans had body weights 3 percent to 20 percent lower than
meat eaters. So why are vegetarians and vegans thinner? Top
¡®Awaken Your
Healing Power¡¯ ¨C Book Review
John Wong will be
speaking at the Holistic Wellness Symposium organised by Kampung Senang to
take place 30 Aug, on Level 5 of the Singpost Bldg, next to Paya Lebar MRT.
For info and to register: http://www.eco-harmony.net/HWS2011 John Wong has written
the most important book I have read this decade. Why? Because John's
experience reveals / affirms that the root of all illnesses begins in the
mind... his young mind was filled with anger and resentment which boiled
over to acts of violence. Then, as John entered
his 30s, his angst and ambition, coupled with his relentless drive to
succeed in his bio-medical career, led to his paralysis and blindness. His
body simply shut down. The medical experts at SingaporeGeneralHospital
were baffled. They treated him blindly ¨C even giving him chemotherapy
¨C in the end they told John that there was nothing medical science
could do for him. Only a miracle could make him walk and see again. And
John created his own Miracle! In his darkest hours,
John made what he calls a ¡®Transcendental Connection¡¯ with his
Creator (the God source) by ¡°going within¡±... Since hope of
healing from without (i.e., doctors & drugs) was gone, he was forced to
fall back on himself. With a body emaciated and crumpled with pain, John
had only his mind to journey within. As he began soul-searching,
probing deep within, he realized the pain and hurt he had caused his
parents... and he was truly penitent. Bingo! that was the breakthrough...
just as his sickness had been caused by his anger & ambition filled
mind, now his genuine remorse was triggering healing in every cell. Note
too that his book also talks about his Change of DIET ¨C his
realization that he needs the right plant diet to feed his cells. And, just as
importantly, as John turned the corner, he vowed that he would use his
experience to help others who are suffering and to repay his parents for
their unwavering care and faith in him. He had found his purpose for
recovery... And this book tells very heart-warming stories of the people he
started helping, even as he himself was struggling to regain his full
strength. There are vitally
important lessons for all of us in John's story. Review by Betty L

How I Became a
Vegetarian
Sutha Raman was recently elected to the VSS Exco. This is the story of
how she came to be a vegetarian. I became a vegetarian
at the age of 16, thanks to a crab! My mother used to buy
live crabs from the wet market to make crab
soup. The crabs came in brown paper bags with
their claws tied up with string. My mother had
to use a chopper to slice them into two while
they were still alive and then cut off the claws and
throw them into boiling water for them to die. This
ensured we had fresh crabs instead of frozen ones.
I guess I was aware of this process that the crabs
had to go through but did not really pay much
attention to it, as my mother made sure that my sisters
and I did not witness such gory details. One day, my mother had
a bag of crabs on the kitchen floor, and I
was helping her in the kitchen. A crab managed to
escape from the paper bag and crawled onto my foot when I was not looking.
That incident freaked me out, and I did not touch the crab soup that day. The
crab (who was later devoured by my family)
changed my perspective on life and diet. Up
till then, the animals had always been dead by the time I
came in contact with them (and honestly, my
mother was such an excellent cook that nothing else
mattered). The experience with the
live crab enlightened me to the fact that the
animals whom I was eating were once alive and had
to be killed so that I could eat them. I researched
further. The information I learned about
slaughterhouse horrors sealed my decision to give up
meat. I have not looked back since and am forever
grateful to the crab who stepped on my foot and
opened my eyes on that day! Top
Some Funding for
Survey on Diet in SG
In our 15 May, 2011
issue, we reported that we are investigating doing a
study of people's diets in SG. We had read about
surveys done in the UK
and US. We contacted the
company that did this 2009 US poll: http://www.vrg.org/press/2009poll.htm. They are happy to do
something similar, with smaller numbers, for us, for
USD4000. We have applied for
funding. So far, Lee Foundation has given SGD2000 for
the project. Thus, we are about SGD3000 short. If
you'd like to help, please make a targeted donation: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/

VSS Endorses
Saddest Dolphins Campaign
ACRES (Animal Concerns
Research and Education Society) – www.acres.org.sg – does great work educating for a world
in which nonhuman animals are justly treated by
we human animals. For example, ACRES advocates for
plant based diets. Recently, ACRES asked
other orgs to support their campaign – www.saddestdolphins.com –
to ask RWS to release the
dolphins whom were captured for a planned RWS
dolphin exhibition. Of course, we said Yes. Even though
RWS isn't planning to serve dolphin meat and
even though dolphins are not vegetarians, we
support the campaign because it speaks to humans'
relationship with our fellow animals. Are they on
Earth just for us, or do they have a right to live
for their own purposes as well. Top
Supporting the
Green Corridor
As you know, on 1 Jul,
the railway lands that have been owned by Malaysia
revert to SG. Our friends at Nature
Society (Singapore)
have proposed that some of
this land be used to form a green corridor for
recreational use by humans and for survival and
propagation by other animals, as well as plants: www.facebook.com/thegreencorridor, www.thegreencorridor.org VSS has supported this
campaign. For instance, on 11 Jun, a VSS
representative took part in a hike along a section of
the railroad. Later this year, we hope to organise a
hike of our own. Would you like to help organise
this: info@... Top
Bringing the
Message to Bishan
Some secondary school
students contacted us about spreading the
meat reduction message. They had two plans: a
talk to their schoolmates in Term 3 and a booth at a
community event in Bishan on 11 Jun to be
GoH-ed by Minster of Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen.
VSS gladly helped with posters, flyers
and stickers. Plus, we provided feedback on the
materials these creative and industrious students
had developed on their own. The three most often
cited grounds for meat reduction are human
health, environmental protection and the
welfare of the nonhuman animals trapped in the
factory farming system. Usually the first two
reasons take precedence as the ones most likely
to appeal to the public, because health and
environment mostly directly impact us personally.
Thus, it was a surprise to see these students
highlighting the animal welfare argument. In fact, some of them had
attended the SPCA Animal Welfare
symposium on 19 Mar this year – www.spca.org.sg/past.html
– at which VSS spoke. Top
The VSS InBox
It is difficult to defend factory farming, with
its incredible crowding and
other horrors, such as clipping off parts of
the beaks of battery hens (hens who are used for
eggs and kept in cages). In response, we now
hear about such things as FreeRange Farming. Yes, the non-human animals are still
confined with the goal of using them to supply food
– meat, eggs, dairy – for humans, but the
claim is that the animals are in more natural
conditions, such as not caged. Here's an email
conversation we had on the topic. A reader wrote You probably already
know this but I just discovered cruelty free
range eggs in Singapore.
They are Freedom Eggs.
I've never been able to find free range eggs
at the supermarket so this was a good
discovery as I never buy battery farmed eggs. If you haven't already
told your newsletter readers perhaps you could
update them. Hope this is helpful. VSS replied Thanks. I'll look into
it. [We haven't looked into it yet. Would anyone like to
investigate?] I'm sceptical about such claims, but it
does show that awareness is increasing. Thx again. The reader replied Yes, do let me know if
they are not real cruelty free eggs, I would be
very angry as they are the first eggs I have ever
bought in Singapore
in 8 years because they say they
are cruelty free. I bought them at the
supermarket. In Australia,
free range eggs are what most people buy, and if you said
they were free range (and sold them as that) and
they weren't, you would be in big trouble and the
consumers would go mad. I was pleased to find
them as it shows more kinder products are being sold in Singapore,
like organic and cruelty free
skincare. Top

Vegetarianism
Becoming Mainstream in the U.S.
The U.S. has a
long way to go to catch up with SG as good place for
veg food, but as the following story from ABC News
suggests that big progress has been made. BTW, as
you can see in an earlier article in this issue
of VSS eNewsletter, VSS is hoping to have a survey
done here by the same company that did the U.S. survey
cited below. Shortly after giving up
meat in 1995, Jessica Lindsey took a
cross-country trip that gave her a taste of what eating
out was going to be like. "Vegetarianism was
still so fringe then that hardly anyone outside of California knew what
it meant," she says. "At one
restaurant, the waitress told me that the soups were
vegetarian. She said that the broth was from beef,
and it contained chicken pieces, but no
meat!" Today Lindsey rarely
has such strange encounters. Vegetarianism is steadily becoming mainstream.
Roughly 6 to 8 million
Americans are vegetarians, according to the
Vegetarian Resource Group-up from a half million to
2 million in 1994. And they have gotten smarter
about their dining choices. A generation ago,
vegetarian meals were often built around leaden nut
loaves or uninspired brown-rice casseroles. Today, many vegetarians
consider themselves foodies and relish the
challenge of finding recipes that showcase fresh
vegetables as a delicious main course, flavored
with herbs and spices. More than 50 vegan
cookbooks are set to be published this year
alone. "Vegetables are becoming culinary rock
stars," says Amanda Cohen, owner of the
vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy in New York City. Read

here, is an NTU Communication and Journalism student.
Here's the inspiring story of how she went veg. Why I crossed over to
"the dark side". Every time I get asked
this question I find myself rattling off the same
chain of reasons that most people have already heard
– for the environment, for our animals, and also
because of the cruelty of factory farming. But what
really started me on the road to vegetarianism was my
mother – ironically now the one who constantly
hovers over me, worried that I'm missing out on
nutrition. I recall the months
after my 'A' levels when I was pretty sure I had
bombed my examinations quite spectacularly and was
looking at the possibilities. I even considered
signing on with the army! My mother then went to
a temple and prayed for my results, promising to go vegetarian for three
months if I managed to make it
to University. Long story short, I
made it. My results were far from sterling but they were
pretty good. I took on my mother's promise and
went vegetarian for three months even though I'm
Christian. I lost a bunch of pounds and felt a lot
cleaner inside. But that didn't quite motivate me to
continue. Fast forward a year
with massive weight gain from freshman year and
really clogged up insides from the hostel life of
nightly suppers, alcohol and unearthly, dangerous sleeping
hours – I decided to go vegetarian to save my health (and
hopefully my waistline). It worked – I
dropped the weight again and I made longer miles at the
gym. What really changed
this time that made me stick to vegetarianism, however,
was not how a plant-based diet could make me look
better. I began to discover more about the killing
of animals for food and worse – the cruel, inhumane
conditions of factory farming. The issue of global
warming became very real to me as I watched videos,
read reports and looked at the numbers. What have I gained from
being vegetarian? I think health reasons aside, I
feel a lot happier and like a much better person.
I've become more conscious of the environment and the
importance of preserving it as best as we can. And
now that I form the minority in my circle of mostly
carnivorous friends, I suppose I am more acutely aware
of how difficult it must be to be different, and I
try to be more tolerant and accepting of others. I
think opting to go meatless turned my life
around, and I will probably be doing this for a long,
long time. Top
VSS Participates
in Veggie Thursday Launch
Veggie Thursday –
www.veggiethursday.sg – is a project of about
28 local NGOs who have come together to encourage
people to go plant based at least once a week.
Veggie Thursday had its media launch on Thu (of
course), 16 Jun. The event was held at Le Caire, a
Middle East restaurant on Arab Street, and drew coverage from Shin
Min, Lianhe Wanbao, YES933
radio and 938Live. Top
Visiting KL
On 25 Jun, at the
invitation of our friends at the Malaysia Vegetarian
Society (and at no cost to VSS), a VSS
representative was a panellist at the Health Education
& Health Awareness (pronounced 'HeeHah')
exhibition at Mid-Valley Megamall in KL. The event
was an opportunity to meet Malaysia's Health Minister, Dato' Sri
Liow Tinong Lai (pictured here), who is
a vegetarian. Also present were Dr Kamalanathan
Sappiah, president of MVS, (which had a booth at
the exhibition); Mr Jowly Yohanesh,
Secretary of the Indonesia Vegetarian Society; Prof Li Duo, organizer of
the Asia Vegetarian
Congress, to be held 8-9 Nov in Hangzhou, www.5avu.com, and Prof Maitree Suttajet, president of the Asia
Vegetarian Union. Upon meeting the
Minister, we invited him to attend the event in Hangzhou. He
explained that the health situation in Malaysia
continues to worsen, partly due to diet. For
example, Malaysia is #1
in obesity in SE
Asia, and 43% of adults suffer from high blood pressure. Mr Liow
observed that mobilizing people to fight communicable
diseases, such as dengue, is easier than convincing
people to tackle non-communicable
diseases, such as heart disease and
diabetes. In response to the
ongoing epidemic of non-communicable
disease, Malaysia's
government has roped in ten
ministries, including MOE. The government also
welcomes NGOs, such as St John's Ambulance, to apply for
grants to do campaigns that
emphasise prevention. Mr Liow discussed the
negative role of meat and urged people to ignore
the siren song of meat advertising. He
recounted that when he was a boy, meat was only
eaten on festive occasions. And, when meateaters
tell him how much enjoyment he is missing by being
veg, Malaysia's Health Minister counters by telling
them how they are missing the enjoyment he gains from
the taste of fresh vegetables. Top
Interning wth VSS
Earlier this year, VSS
was fortunate to begin our intern with a non-veg SMU
student. We are very happy with her work. Here's a
report from her perspective. If you know anyone interested
in interning with VSS, contact info@... [Warning: salary is only
$300/month] Interning with VSS has
been an eye-opening experience for me. For one, all my
friends are envious that I have the luxury of planning
my own time. For another, I've learnt the
importance of eating less meat to help not only myself, but
also to be kinder to my furry friends. Through this internship
experience, I have met many interesting people from
varied walks of life. Through helping the VSS Exco, I
have learnt that staying connected with people
and helping them is important. You may never know when
you might need their help. As a saying goes,
"No one is an island". VSS is a place where I have
grown – inside and out. Top

Feedback to the
Government
Following on from VSS's
participation in the successful Animal Welfare forum
last month, the event organisers, ACRES, invited VSS to
submit proposals to be discussed with the
government. Here is what we sent. You are welcome to send
your own proposals, following the format
below, to ACRES – www.acres.org.sg – to be
forwarded. Overview of the Issue: The eating habits
children form when young can impact them for their entire
lives. Furthermore, the beginnings of many killer
diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, can be traced
to the food people eat when young, even if the
symptoms appear many years later. Thus, we need to strive
to do what we can to start children on the right
path. In turn, children may even be able to influence
their adult family members. Constructive feedback: The food in most school
canteens, even much of the vegetarian food, does
not match health experts' guidelines, as canteen
food tends to be high in oil, low in whole grains,
high in animal products, low in plant foods. Of course,
children's preferences play a part. Indeed, they
often reject food that is good for them. One reason for
this rejection is price. Children can be very price
sensitive, and healthier food can be slightly more
expensive. Proposed solution: The government might
want to consider subsidising healthier options in
school canteens. Vegetarian Society has experience
working with school canteens. Our experience is that
even when healthy, plant based food meets kids' taste
test, they won't buy it unless the price is right. We understand that
there is already a precedent for subsidising healthy
food. At Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, whole grain foods are
cheaper than white rice: http://www.healthxchange.com.sg/News/Pages/
Khoo-Teck-Puat-Hospital-opens.aspx Yes, subsidies cost
money, but if we think long term, perhaps we actually
save money, because of reduction in health care expenses
and in lost time due to illness, not to mention the
suffering of individuals and their families. Perhaps, a
few schools of various types – preschools, primary,
secondary, JC, ITE – could pilot such as
scheme, including development of age appropriate
dishes. Top

The VSS InBox: 4
Items
1. Our last issue
contained correspondence about so-called 'free range'
eggs. Upon reading that, reader Jaipal Gill, from SPCA
– www.spca.org.sg – wrote
in to say (reprinted with
Jaipal's permission): I just read your latest
copy of the newsletter, a fantastic read as
always! There was a short bit
about "Freedom Eggs". Does this refer to the newly
introduced FreedomRange Eggs which are produced
locally? If so, they are not free range as the name
cheekily suggests. The AVA does not permit free
range chicken farming in Singapore due to bird flu concerns.
These eggs are barn laid. The chickens
can actually be seen if you drive past their
farm at Lim Chu Kang. While there are many
welfare problems associated with the barn farming
system (and free range as well), it's still better than
the traditional battery farms. 2. A reader wrote
in to say that she was committed to going veg but having
health problems adjusting to a veg diet. VSS does
not dispense individual health advice. However, we do
have a list of health professionals who, for
their usual fees, will provide health advice to
vegetarians. She asked for that list. To see the list, write info@.... No word back from the reader. 3. Similarly, some
JC students wrote in with questions for a veg dietician,
and we referred them to one on the above list. The
students wrote back to report a satisfactory result. 4. About three
issues back, we had a query about veg shoes, and we
referred the reader to the advice offered by our friends
at ACRES. Among that advice was to try MacBeth
shoes – www.macbeth.com – which are not only
non-leather, but also use glue of non-animal origins. The
good news is that another reader recently spotted
MacBeth shoes at a Bata shop. The bad news is that if
you're going for an interview for the job of CEO of a
Fortune 500 company, MacBeth may not have any shoes
for you. Top

Veg Stalls at
Schools
As part of VSS's
efforts to start kids eating right, we not only do talks and workshops for
students and teachers, we also work with canteen stall operators and staff.
Plus, when a stall
opens up at a school canteen, we look for people to take over the stall and
run it as a veg stall. We recently had success with that at RI. If you know
a school with an open stall and the school would be open to having a veg
stall, we can try to find someone to run it: info@... Top
Unpublished Letter
to MyPaper
Paul McCartney is one of the world's most famous
vegetarians - http://www.meatfreemondays.com
- (he's also know for his music, in particular, being one of the Beatles).
Paul once said that if slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a
vegetarian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4YX_iVWIe0 Well, last week,
readers of MyPaper had a chance to see inside SG's slaughterhouse for pigs.
In response, one VSS member was inspired to write the following to MyPaper,
but it doesn't seem to have been published. I refer to "Pigs
to Pork" MyPaper, A6-A7, 5 July, 2011. The article and the
accompanying photos provide a graphic glimpse at how pigs are killed here
in Singapore.
Sad. Pigs are intelligent creatures, just as are chickens and cows and the
other animals whom we eat. The sadness begins before
the slaughter. From birth to all-too-early death, we deprive these fellow
animals - yes, we are animals, too - of anything resembling a natural life.
Pigs to pork - living beings to lifeless objects - but they feel pain, too.
They experience emotions, too. If they had been permitted, these non-human
animals too would have developed family ties. Generations of people
in India
and elsewhere have lived without meat. Scientific research shows that we
can be healthy, even healthier, on a plant based diet. So, why? Top
Responding to the
Media
As regular readers of
this newsletter know, VSS does lots of talks, exhibitions and trips. These
are great for face-to-face contact, but the numbers reached are usually
relatively small, such as 50 people at a talk or 40 people on a trip to
NANAS. We can use the media to reach more people, and nowadays, with new
media, such as FB, Twitter and blogs, so many opportunities exist. If you'd be interested
in working with VSS to use the media to share the veg message, please
contact info@.... Even if you just let
others know about opportunities, such as an article in a newspaper (see the
previous article in this newsletter for an example from MyPaper) or
something in someone's blog, that'll be great. And, media in any language
can be useful. Thx. Top
Are Veg Stalls
Good Business?
A journalist from Shin Min contacted us about the
viability of veg food stalls. Here is the correspondence. Dear Sir/Mdm, I am a journalist from
Shin Min. I have some questions regarding the operating costs of vegetarian
stalls. Recently, a San De Vegetarian Food Stall at Marina Bay Sands closed
down due to insufficient manpower and poor customer response. Do you all encounter a
lot of such cases? Is it very difficult to maintain a vegetarian food stall
in Singapore?
Has a lot of vegetarian stall owners reflect on this issue? VSS replies: Thanks for contacting
Vegetarian Society (Singapore).
We can put you in touch with some veg stall operators if you wish. Also,
the VSS website hosts a list of 500+ veg stalls and restaurants: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=fdl
Indeed, with so many veg eateries, SG is one of the world's best countries
for vegetarians. While we don't have
statistics, it's our impression that the number of veg stalls is
increasing, as more people are interested in meatfree eating, whether for
reasons of health, environment or kindness to our fellow animals, as well
as spiritual reasons. Also, it isn't only full time vegetarians who eat at
veg stalls. Nowadays, many people are meat reducers, i.e., people trying to
eat less meat. For instance, recently 28 NGOs came together to launch
Veggie Thursday - www.veggiethursday.sg Also, HPB advocates
that we eat whole grain foods, such as brown rice, and many veg stall offer
brown rice. Previously, veg stalls had a reputation for not serving many
veggies and instead serving lots of fried foods such as mock meats.
Fortunately, that seems to be changing. Yes, veg stalls face
the same pressures that other stalls face: rising rents, labour shortages,
finding good staff, rising prices of ingredients. VSS tries to support
veg eateries via education in the form of social media, flyers, talks,
exhibitions and more. Top

Vegetarianism and
Christianity
VSS members sometimes
meet people who believe that vegetarianism is the exclusive domain of only
certain religions. However, we meet vegetarians from all the major
religions found in SG, as well as some of the smaller ones. Here's one example of
how people from many religions find support in their religion for embracing
vegetarianism. It's a new book entitled, The Friends We Keep: Unleashing
Christianity's Compassion for Animals: http://www.baylorpress.com/Book/219/

Is Eating Meat a
Personal Decision
Does it affect only the
meat eater? Not really! From: http://www.evana.org Who can contest that
meat involves heartbreaking animal suffering, ruins the environment, clears
rain forests, impacts global climate, pollutes soil, water and air, puts
enormous pressure on public health systems, diverts available food
resources away from hungry people, and obliges every tax payer to finance
sprawling subsidy-jungles for farmers? One of the main
arguments against tobacco was the burden of passive smoking which seems like
peanuts compared to the drama brought upon all citizens of the global
village by the production and consumption of meat! Top

Veg Catering
Last month, VSS met a
group of students who are spreading the veg message via talks and food.
They call themselves Green Dot. One of the things they do is to provide
Bento meals for school camps. They have collaborated with several tertiary
institutions such as the NUS BusinessSchool and NUS LawSchool,
for events such as Bizad Blackout, NUS Open House and NUS Law Freshmen
Orientation. The response of students at these events was that the food
really exceeded their expectations of what a meatless meal are like. In
fact, some didn't even notice the difference between our meal and an
ordinary non-vegetarian meal. Thus, if you do want to cater food or find
out more about Green Dot, find them on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/GreenDot-Express/

21 Reasons To Go
Veg
The following webpage
lists 21 reasons for going veg: http://www.giveusahome.co.uk/articles/
vegetarianism.htm Here, from the list, is
a powerful reason that we hadn't heard before: "Animals who die
for your dinner table die alone, in terror, in sadness and in pain".
This reason reminds us that the animals whom we eat form social bonds.
Maybe those bonds aren't identical to bonds formed by humans, but the
connections that pigs, chickens, cows, etc. form with others of their
species, or even other species, do matter to them. Maybe they should matter
to us, too. Top
A new paper in the U.S.
government's Centers for Disease Control's journal Emerging Infectious
Diseases claims that similarities between drug-resistance genes in E. coli
carried by chickens and E. coli infecting humans suggest that the chickens
may be the source of human infections. Indeed, antibiotic use in
large-scale farming (as shown in the photo) of the animals whom we eat
creates drug-resistant organisms that affect human health. Read

Three Tips for
Better Health
Three tips from
Toronto: (1) we should eat more beans (lots of protein and other
nutrients); (2) we have to watch out for liquid calories (such as in sodas
and other drinks loaded with sugar); and (3) let's try to think NEAT
(Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis), in other words, as we go about our
daily routine, we should look for opportunities to get a bit of exercise
here and there, such as walking up the stairs at the MRT station or getting
off the bus one stop early and walking. Read

The Meat-Diabetes
Link
An increasing number of
studies link meat eating with diabetes. Similarly, in other studies, people
who adopt a plant based diet are able to reverse diabetes. Here's one
possible reason. A new study published
in the journal Diabetes Care found a strong link between diabetes onset and
blood levels of a group of harsh industrial chemicals charmingly known as
"persistent organic pollutants" (POPs). The researchers
identified a group of 725 diabetes-free elderly Swedes and tracked them for
five years, studying the level of POPs in their blood. Thirty-six of them
ended up contracting Type 2 diabetes - and the ones who did had
significantly higher POP levels than the ones who didn't. How are these
awful chemicals still causing trouble decades after being banned? POPs
accumulate in the fatty tissue of animals - and transfer to the animals who
eat them, including humans who eat meat, including fish. Read

and education, the FreshFoodAcademy:
www.freshfoodacademy.com. To find
out about their classes, 6778.4826 or info@... Here's an excerpt from
the bio of the Academy's founder, Chef Sandra Lee: A love for good food
and a desire for a healthier lifestyle prompted Sandra to learn more about
the intricacies of gourmet raw cuisine. After more than 20 years in the IT
industry, the long hours and hectic corporate life took a toll on Sandra's
health, her weight piling up and health issues surfacing one by one. With a
very supportive husband and son behind her, she went in search of a more
wholesome alternative lifestyle, which led her to going organic and
eventually to living cuisine. Her fervent pursuit
took her to the United States,
the land of Fast Food, yet ironically where
there is serious and fast growing population of raw foodies. Anyone who
knows Sandra will tell you that she is the living testimony of the
miraculous effects of turning raw: she went from size 16 to size 10, her
health issues just disappeared. Top

The next VSS Library talk takes place at Bukit Merah Library on Sat, 10
Sep, 2–3.30pm. We have a very popular speaker, Dr Priyadarshani

Fruit smoothies have

our own green smoothies, VSS has invited Adeline Tan, the entrepreneur
behind LINS Smoodees. Adeline will be sharing

VSS Student
Members Meet Up!
The following report was contributed by VSS
intern Natalie Teo, who is an NTU student. The VSS student membership
scheme offers free membership to full time students below 24 years of age: http://www.vegetarian–society.org/student Good food, a great host
and a chance to make new friends – the setting was complete on the
evening of 22 Jul when VSS held our first ever meet up for students. Coming
from all walks of life, we students enjoyed the burgers from vegan joint
Veganburg as we chatted and shared experiences about their vegetarian
journey. We were later joined by
Veganburg owner Alex Tan, who very kindly gave us discount coupons and
shared a little more about his work with Veganburg and other social causes. I think the highlight
of the evening was when we started to share more about why we turned
vegetarian and the hurdles we face continuing on a veg path. Some of us
were led to be veg by family reasons or religion, while most of us opted to
go vegetarian for ethical reasons. Listening to every
single one of my fellow students trade stories about gory images and
footage of animal cruelty made me feel that yes, I was not alone. What
surprised me, though, was that very few of us actually opted to be
vegetarian for health reasons. I guess it seems that it's not just the
average meat–eater who takes their youth for granted. We vegetarians
are not very much different either! Among us also were meat
reducers whom we warmly welcomed. These were students who, for a variety of
reasons, such as family objections, could not go completely vegetarian but
were working on it. Their stance was similar – that meat consumption
was ultimately bad for the environment and for animal welfare. And then we moved on to
the predictably Singaporean pastime – Complaining. The general
consensus among us all was that our meat eating friends thought we were
crazy. We also talked about the difficulties in getting our family,
especially the older generation, to understand that we would not be
malnourished if we did not consume animal foods. We then adjourned to
the conference room to watch some educational videos on going vegetarian.
Knowing that there was so much more to being vegetarian than just the
variety of issues already explored in the media, really opened my eyes up
to this lifestyle that I've chosen to adopt. So we all left after,
promising to add each other on Facebook (see I told you we were no
different from normal young people!) and keep in touch. Until next time, my
newfound friends! Top
This email was sent to VSS by Dave Goh, a student
at SingaporeManagementUniversity. Thought I would like to
share with you something – a few days ago I had this dream…
very vivid… I was in a slaughterhouse with a friend who, along with
many other people, was there to buy meat. Dead carcasses filled the place.
In the midst of all that death, I saw a small, young animal, chained and
still alive. As I was getting ready to leave, the young animal suddenly
appeared, ran towards me and repeatedly nudged my left knee. It nudged my
knee, at the same time shivering profusely, for more than 5 minutes. I
stood there dumbfounded. Nothing can really
describe what I felt. It was an immense sadness. One so chilling that I
will not forget. When I awoke, tears were in my eyes, and just thinking
about the scene brought more tears. What struck me with sadness was that it
chose me amongst all the people there (running straight at me) and its
incessant shiver. In the dream, I vowed to save the animal, no matter how
much it cost to buy its freedom. Top

Talk on the
Pangolin Trade
Pangolins, also known
as spiny anteaters, have been hunted and consumed throughout Asia historically. In recent decades, however, there
has been a shift from local utilisation to large scale commercial
harvesting which is attributed to demand from East and Southeast Asian
countries where pangolin meat is consumed and their scales used in
traditional medicines. Despite national and international protection an
illicit trade in Asian pangolins continues to persist and it is this that
is threatening the very existence of the species. This talk comprises an
introduction to the trade in Asian pangolins followed by a report of recent
efforts to understand the dynamics of trade, in particular in Peninsular
Malaysia, so that efforts to mitigate such activity can be informed and
improved. Venue: The Function Hall, Singapore Botanic Gardens Date: Mon, 29 Aug Time: 4 to 5pm Admission: free Contact: http://www.nss.org.sg, contact@..., 6741.2036 Top
